EA has just posted its results for the last quarter of the 2022 financial year, with its earnings presentation revealing some of the gaming company’s plans for the next financial year. Most of note is a number of unnamed and unannounced titles that are due to release in Q4 of the 2023 financial year, which include a major IP and a new remake.

The titles are due in the fourth quarter of the next financial year, which will be at the start of the 2023 calendar year between January 1 and April 1. The four are listed as a major IP, a partner title, a remake, and a sports title, with a note on the slide explaining that the titles “have not yet been publicly disclosed.”

While nothing can be ascertained for sure until EA is ready to announce these titles, there are a lot of major franchises within EA’s stable to be excited for. The major IP could refer to one of Bioware’s games under the Mass Effect or Dragon Age banners, or a new Star Wars title.

EA also has a number of major partnerships, including a recently announced one with Middle Earth Enterprises. The game that’s being produced from that partnership, a free-to-play mobile game called The Lord of the Rings: Heroes of Middle-earth, is listed in the footnotes of the slide, and so is unlikely to be the “partner title” EA is referring to.

While the remake brings to mind EA’s upcoming Dead Space remake, which recently got pushed to a 2023 release date, it’s more likely the remake listed in the presentation is something that hasn’t yet been announced. A subsequent slide says that a new EA-owned studio in Seattle, which will be working on the Battlefield franchise, also has an “unannounced open world action adventure game” in the works. Motive Studios, which is developing the Dead Space remake, also has an “unnanounced IP” on its slate.

We’ve hit Week 8 of The Seven’s battle against the Imagined Order in Fortnite, and they’re enlisting Loopers for some essential missions again this week. All of them are pretty straightforward, with one of the objectives just being to go for a nice swim, but the last objective can be very tricky, so keep an eye on the Sensor Backpack you pick up during that quest–or just take a look at this guide. Each of these challenges is worth 23,000 XP, and with four challenges, that adds up to a total of 92,000 XP up for grabs through the Resistance missions this week.

Fortnite Chapter 3 Season 2 Resistance Quests Week 8

(Stage 1/2) Establish Device Uplink Near Sanctuary or Rocky Reels (Stage 2/2) Talk to Mancake, Bao Bros, and Lil Whip – 23,000 XP(Stage 1/2) Establish Device Uplink Near The Daily Bugle or The Joneses (Stage 2/2) Destroy trash laying around Sanctuary (8) – 23,000 XP(Stage 1/3) Establish Device Uplink Near Shifty Shafts or Logjam Lumberyard (Stage 2/3) Collect Signal Jammers (3)(Stage 3/3) Swim in water – 23,000 XP(Stage 1/3) Establish Device Uplink Near Seven Outpost I or Synapse Station (Stage 2/3) Equip the Sensor Backpack(Stage 3/3) Use the Sensor Backpack to find an energy fluctuation around Loot Lake – 23,000 XP

Every single one of these challenges starts with the familiar Establish a Device Uplink objective, each in different areas of the map. Take a look below for the map markers for each device uplink.

Each of these quests, save for the last one, are pretty straightforward. You’ll drive to the Butter Barn (the huge barn between Synapse Station and Rocky Reels), Coney Crossroads, and Condo Canyon to talk to one of our food-headed friends at each location. Afterwards, for the trash cleanup, head to Sanctuary and look for pizza boxes or trash bags with an orange-brown stink cloud emanating from them. Hit the trash with your pickaxe or shoot it to destroy eight total pieces of trash. The signal jammers are all located on top of the three hills surrounding the northwest corner of the map where Logjam Lumberyard sits. Once you collect all three signal jammers, dive into the nearest body of water to complete that mission.

The last quest is where things are going to get tricky–we need to pick up a sensor backpack and find an energy fluctuation somewhere near Loot Lake. There are two backpacks available; one south of Tilted Towers, the other just west of it. Look around in the trees near the objective marker to find the glowing white sensor backpack. Equip it and start watching the lights and listening for its beeping. The faster the beeping and the brighter the green light gets, the closer you are to the energy fluctuation.

Eventually, between two rocks on the southwest end of Loot Lake, the energy fluctuation will pop up as you get near it. Scan it by getting close to it and interacting, and The Origin will come on to the comms shouting about how bad this is, and that he needs to find The Scientist to get to the bottom of what’s going on.

Job well done, Looper–you’ve aided The Seven in their fight against the IO for another week and hopefully leveled yourself up quite a bit in the process. Make sure you’re familiar with the new update’s changes with the patch notes here, or take a look at the new Short Nite film festival that’s returning to the island soon.

Metroid Dread has sold 2.9 million units since its release in October 2021, making it the best-selling Metroid game of all time. The record was previously held by 2002’s Metroid Prime with 2.84 million units sold. The new figures comes from Nintendo’s most recent earnings call. (Thanks Nintendo Life.)

The highly anticipated Metroid Dread was on Amazon video game best-sellers list in Australia, North America, the UK, and Japan. It was also the most pre-ordered game post-E3 2021 at GameStop. Metroid Dread had its highest-selling physical game launch in the UK. Including digital copies, it quickly became the fastest-selling Metroid game in that region. In North America, Metroid Dread sold over 854,000 units in its first month, and in Japan, it sold 86,798 retail units in just two days before selling roughly 270,000 in the first week alone. Another 2.63 million sales came from other regions across the world.

In 2021, Metroid Dread was nominated for a number of awards at both The Golden Joystick Awards and The Game Awards, winning Best Action/Adventure Game at the latter showcase and the Nintendo Game of the Year at the Golden Joysticks. It was also named one of the 10 best games of the year by GameSpot

Nintendo did not specify a release date for Metroid Prime 4. This isn’t surprising since Nintendo reported that it was restarting development on the oft-delayed game. For more on Metroid, read about all we know on Metroid Prime 4 and our Metroid Dread review.

Smite, a free-to-play MOBA, has revealed what might be its most bizarre crossover so far, revealing that all nine current Slipknot members are joining the game.

Revealed in a YouTube video, Slipknot is coming to Smite in the form of nine skins spread across three different gods. Sid Wilson, Corey Taylor, and Craig Jones are Poseidon skins, Jim Root, Alessandro Venturella, and Mick Thomson are Chaac skins, and Micheal Pfaff, Jay Weinberg, and Clown are Raijin skins.

In a blog post on Knotfest, it was also revealed that the Smite X Slipknot event will include a dynamic music pack. The music pack will include “Duality,” “Psychosocial,” and “The Devil In I” in a single music pack. As players perform actions, like getting kills or destroying objectives, the music pack will play different sections from each song, rotating throughout the match to keep the music fresh.

Smite X Slipknot is set to be available this month and Smite has announced that its update 9.5 show will take place on Twitch on May 11 at 12 PM PT / 3 PM ET. The show should provide more details about when Slipknot will be coming to the game and how much all of the Slipknot items might cost. Smite has previously done crossovers with other properties, like Transformers, Stranger Things, and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Smite’s previous crossovers have come in the form of battle pass skins, but the Slipknot event has not been officially confirmed to be a battle pass. The current Smite battle pass is set to end May 17.

Apple will discontinue the iPod Touch, according to an announcement from Apple’s Newsroom. It’s the end of an era for the entire iPod brand, a line of music-centric portable devices that was highly popular in its heyday. The first iPod launched in 2001 to much huzzah and the final iPod Touch gen released in 2019 to a much quieter reception.

This is news that’ll make a lot of people feel old (this writer included). If you want to still get the latest iPod Touch for nostalgia sake or if you’re just into collecting old tech, the device is currently available on Amazon for $190. If Amazon sells out, you can also purchase an iPod Touch at Apple and other major retailers for $200 while supplies last.

It makes sense why Apple is discontinuing the iPod Touch (and thereby killing the entire iPod line). iPhones offer everything iPods have and more, and if you can already access an entire music library on your phone, it makes lugging around a device dedicated to music unnecessary.

Music has accompanied how tech has evolved over the years, from the Walkman to the portable CD player–the latter of which was killed off by the arrival of the iPod. It’s wild to think that so many years later now, the once-revolutionary iPod that every middle school student toted is now outdated. Long live the iPod!

Following Nintendo’s quarterly report outlining its profits and future plans, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa declined to answer a question regarding if new Nintendo Switch hardware is coming this fiscal year. While Furukawa’s lack of a response might not seem like much and isn’t entirely indicative that new hardware is coming soon, based on the president’s past response to the same question–and Nintendo’s fiscal report–it could mean a new model is on the way.

According to Bloomberg reporter Takashi Mochizuki, when Furukawa was asked the same question two years ago–during a year when the company did not release new Switch hardware–the president was forthcoming about Nintendo’s plans. Seeing how Furukawa avoided responding this time around, it seems possible the company has something up its sleeves. Nintendo’s current fiscal year runs until the end of March 2023, leaving the studio with plenty of time to announce–and release–a new iteration of the portable console.

Nintendo President Furukawa declined to comment today when asked whether it plans to release a new Switch hardware this FY. Two years ago, when it didn’t release a Switch hardware, he clearly said there won’t be.https://t.co/0CztSdUH0v

— Takashi Mochizuki (@6d6f636869) May 10, 2022

Based on Nintendo’s most recent fiscal report, a new Switch model could be just what the company needs. This past fiscal year, Nintendo sold fewer Switch units than the one prior. Of course some of this was to be expected due to supply issues surrounding the Switch, but the company has also dropped its expected Switch sales for the current fiscal year from 21.7 million to 21 million. Bloomberg said while Nintendo is often conservative with its forecasting, this reflects the Switch’s slowing momentum, something Furukawa noted was a trend with Nintendo consoles and hoped to stop with the Switch. While the company has made plans to split its stock, releasing upgraded hardware would be a huge boon to revenue.

An upgraded Nintendo Switch–often referred to as the Nintendo Switch Pro–has been rumored to be in the works for some time now. While Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser told The Washington Post that the company is in no rush to push out new Nintendo Switch hardware last summer, the decline in Switch sales and the console’s recent five year anniversary could change that. After all, five years does seem the right time for a hardware upgrade–especially since Nintendo claims the Switch is only in the middle of its life cycle.

Fortunately for the company, Nintendo has no shortage of software coming this year. As of right now, Fire Emblem Warriors: Three Hopes, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, Mario + Rabbids Sparks of Hope, Splatoon 3, Sonic Frontiers, and a new generation of Pokemon games–Pokemon Scarlet and Violet–are slated for 2022 releases.

Although Apex Legends is a largely movement-focused battle royale experience, there is a growing place for defensive play in its meta. Characters like Gibraltar and Rampart have shown that opting for protection over aggression can be vital to success in some situations, and it seems Respawn has taken notice of that trend with the game’s newest defensive legend Newcastle.

Newcastle brings 100% defense to the table, offering absolutely nothing in his kit that aids his team offensively. But that’s perfectly fine, as his various shields make him an extremely viable option for almost any team composition when used in the right way. In this guide, we’ll share a few tips and tricks that can help you make the most of Newcastle.

Defensive abilities all the way

Newcastle’s abilities are entirely based on defense. If you’re hoping to have options available to you for aggressive pushes or movement, you’ll want to look elsewhere. However, what he brings to the table is invaluable levels of protection that can make or break an encounter when the character is used to his maximum potential.

Newcastle’s passive ability is Retrieve the Wounded, which allows him to drag downed allies to safety while rezzing them. During this time, he protects them with a small shield that can protect his fallen pal from enemy gunfire.

His tactical ability Mobile Shield deploys a fairly large and tall energy shield that he can reposition and angle in any direction he wishes to protect himself and his allies from gunfire. This is an incredibly helpful tool when repositioning or simply being caught out in the open.

Lastly, Castle Wall is Newcastle’s ultimate ability, which sees the legend leap forward and slam down a massive wall shield with varying heights. This allows teammates to fire over the shorter section or hide behind the taller areas. Gunfire will destroy individual sections over time, but it can take quite a beating.

You’re the tank, so be sure to act like it

If you’re used to being more mobile in Apex Legends, playing Newcastle may throw you off just a bit. While you’ll need to remain on the move like any legend in the game, your goal is largely to offer non-stop utility to your team. You should always stay close to your allies so that you can provide a Mobile Shield during a sticky situation or quickly pull them to safety if they go down near you.

While you should certainly be an active participant in gunfights, just remember that playing this character to his strengths means thinking about your teammates’ lives over all else. In this case, the best offense is a good defense. If your squad is alive and protected by your abilities during an encounter, they’re able to keep shooting and pushing you ever closer to victory.

Pick a loadout that goes well with your abilities

Since all of your abilities are focused on directional protection from gunfire, you’ll find a lot of success engaging at mid-range where you have some space to make the most of your shields. This makes assault rifles and LMGs excellent picks for Newcastle, as you can use your Castle Wall as cover and whittle away at your foes’ health bars without needing to worry about having to reposition very quickly. However, it also doesn’t hurt to carry a shotgun or SMG as a secondary for when you’re faced with hyper-aggressive opponents or when you need to rush in and save a downed teammate.

You should have knockdown shield priority

You can grab your downed teammates a pull them to safety while you rez them, and the shield that is deployed during this process is actually powered by your own knockdown shield. Because of this, you should have priority over the best knockdown shield found among the lot of you. Luckily, the shield recharges over time when not in use, so you should have plenty of protection to offer to your squad if one of them goes down.

Newcastle

Your Mobile Shield can be destroyed

While your Mobile Shield can take a bit of a beating, it’s not indestructible. If enemies focus their fire on it, you’ll soon find yourself exposed again. The shield is divided into upper and lower halves, so smart players will focus on the bottom part to ensure they expose your legs for easy damage. If they only destroy the upper segment, however, you can still duck behind the lower section in a pinch until they destroy it, too.

Know how to make the most of your Castle Wall

Your Castle Wall ultimate ability serves as your ace in the hole for many encounters. Knowing exactly how and when to use it is vital to your success, though.

For starters, aiming the ability at your allies can let you jump higher and further. This lets you cross larger distances to provide them with very rapid protection. Plus, the initial slam will repel knock back nearby enemies, giving you a chance to get your position behind the wall while they’re a little bit disoriented.

Also, the wall is electrified, so enemies who touch it will be briefly stunned and take a small of damage. Use this to your advantage when someone pushes in too close. Be sure to jump over and around the shield in an attempt to force them to mantle over a shorter section or accidentally brush against the wall while tracking you, then promptly capitalize on your opportunity to dish out damage while they’re stunned.

You pair well with nearly anyone

Due to the fact that his abilities will be useful in any number of scenarios, Newcastle pairs well with nearly any team composition. His defensive kit can either be used to provide aid when more aggressive squadmates need a safe retreat or to be rescued after going down, or he can team up with other defensive characters for some impressive levels of fortification that can make opposing squads think twice before pushing.

All of that said, it never hurts to have a recon specialist like Bloodhound or Seer on your team to give you the necessary info that will help you set your shields up in the right spots. It’s also undoubtedly beneficial to have a character like Wraith or Valkyrie along for the ride, as you can use your ult as cover while they get set up to reposition your team with their own ultimate abilities.

Beware your counters, though

Unlike Gibby, who has a full dome to protect his allies, Newcastle is a very direction-based protector. This makes you susceptible to flanks and certain ultimate abilities that can create genuine havoc for your team. Most notably, you’ll want to keep an eye out for people throwing grenades behind your shields or abilities that allow enemies to sneak behind you in some way and catch you off guard.

One of your biggest counters is Bangalore, who can disrupt your fortified area with smoke grenades and allow her squad to push you while you’re disoriented. Her and Gibraltar also have large area-of-effect ultimates that can flush you out of cover in open areas. When possible, try to avoid being caught in spots where you can’t retreat to natural cover when facing off against these types of legends.

Weekly patches have become the norm for Destiny 2, with each one usually arriving after the weekly reset on a Tuesday. This week’s update addresses a few Guardian Games issues, plugs an exploit, and allows for a Ghost shell to sport a fashionable shade of nuclear green.

For anyone engaged in the Guardian Games, playlist activities now grant progression for Deepsight weapons and levels, and the hunt for the handy SMG The Title should be easier now. After reports from players that the gun was not dropping when Medallions were turned in, Bungie says that this issue has been corrected. If you’ve been hoarding your Medallions, then the more you hand over the higher the chance that you’ll get The Title added to your inventory.

The other notable adjustment this week is that Shiver Strike for Titans has been slightly nerfed. After Bungie discovered that an interaction between Shiver Strike and Glacial Quake could allow players to generate infinite Stasis crystals, the move has been tweaked to consume a full melee charge immediately on activation.

You can read the full patch notes from Bungie below.

In other Destiny 2 news, if you’re looking to engage in some class warfare during the latest seasonal event then you can check out our guide on everything to know about the Guardian Games and how they’ve been overhauled this year.

If you’ve been looking for a PlayStation 5 but haven’t been able to get one, 2022 could be your year. Sony has projected it will sell many millions more PlayStation 5 units in the current fiscal year, and this could be a sign that the company believes the chip shortages and other supply issues might improve, leading to more units being available to buy. Nothing is guaranteed, though.

As part of Sony’s latest investor briefing, the company said it projects to sell 18 million PS5 consoles during the fiscal year that began April 1 and runs through March 31, 2023. This number is based on the company’s “current visibility into parts procurement,” Sony said.

For comparison, Sony sold 11.5 million PS5 consoles during its fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2022 and 7.8 million PS5 consoles for the fiscal year that ended on March 31, 2021. That is a sizable jump: Sony is essentially predicting it will sell upwards of 60% more systems during the current fiscal year than it did last year. So far in 2022, Sony has sold 2 million PS5 consoles, which compares to 3.3 million during the same three-month period last year.

18 million+ for the current fiscal year works out to an average of 4.5 million per quarter for the current fiscal year. This would be on par with the PS5’s best quarter ever in Q3 of FY20 (October through December of 2020), during which Sony sold 4.5 million consoles at the system’s launch. Again, this all seems to suggest that Sony has reason to believe that, despite any ongoing supply issues, it will be able to get more PS5s onto store shelves, which potentially means it will be easier for you to actually buy one.

While Sony seems somewhat optimistic about supply looking better, the wider consensus on general supply issues is less positive, as some in the wider technology world believe shortages could stretch into 2024. Looking to the video game space specifically, Nintendo said during its own earnings briefing this week that there is “no end in sight” for the ongoing chip shortage, according to The Wall Street Journal. Nintendo is projecting to sell 21 million Switch consoles during its current fiscal year, down from 23 million in the year that ended on March 31, 2022.

Sony CFO Hikori Totoki said during an earnings briefing translated by VGC that Sony feels “very comfortable” about hitting this mark, suggesting the projection might actually be conservative. At the same time, he said demand may still outstrip supply.

“18 million units is what we feel very comfortable we can get the parts and components for [during FY22],” Totoki said. “We feel that there is a little bit higher demand than that, so if the question is if we can meet the demand, I think we’re still short somewhat.”

Totoki said PS5 stock remains “very low,” adding that Sony originally planned to have sold 22.6 million PS5 units by this stage in the console’s lifecycle. The company reduced that target due to “constraints” in the market regarding components.

Sony has sold more than 19 million PS5 units so far since the console launched in November 2020.

The Xbox and Switch platforms routinely outsell the PS5 in the US for units sold and dollars driven, and that’s no doubt related to the supply constraints. By comparison, it is much easier to find an Xbox or a Switch, for whatever reason. While Sony might be forecasting stronger PS5 sales for the current fiscal year, that doesn’t guarantee you’ll be able to walk into a store anytime soon and pick up a console, unfortunately. Check out GameSpot’s PS5 restock page to learn more.
