In September 2020, AMD released its Ryzen 3000 C-series for Chromebooks, a line up of budget-priced chips based on the 12nm Picasso (Ryzen+) architecture that featured up to 4 cores and 8 threads and up to 11 Radeon Vega compute units. Nearly two years on and AMD has just announced four new Ryzen 5000 C-series SKUs designed to bring the performance benefits of its Cezanne (Zen 3) architecture to the Chromebook space.

The four new Ryzen 5000 C-series processors range from 8C/16T to 2C/4T, all with a 15 W TDP and designed to improve productivity and battery life over existing Ryzen 3000 C-series processors and Intel’s 11th Gen Tiger Lake chips.

Aimed at the premium area of the Chromebook market, the new AMD Ryzen 5000 C-series looks to offer OEMs and users premium options for the latest generation of Chromebooks with some higher-end features such as fast charging and Wi-Fi 6E networking capability.

Looking at the specifications of the Ryzen 5000 C-series line-up, the top model is the Ryzen 7 5825C with an impressive 8 cores and 16 threads which is double that of the previous top-tier Chromebook Ryzen processor, the AMD Ryzen 7 3700C. It has a base core frequency of 2 GHz, with a boost core clock of up to 4.5 GHz on a single core, which is bolstered by its Radeon Vega 8 integrated graphics with a maximum boost frequency of up to 1.8 GHz.

The second model in the new line-up is the Ryzen 5 5625C, which has 6 cores, 12 threads, and integrated Radeon Vega 7 graphics with a maximum boost frequency of up to 1.6 GHz. The 6 cores feature a base frequency of 2.3 GHz, while one of these cores can boost up to 4.3 GHz for applications that demand additional performance.

Focusing on the two entry-level models in the line-up, the Ryzen 3 5425C benefits from 4 cores and 8 threads with a base frequency of 2.7 GHz, with a boost frequency on one core of up to 4.1 GHz, as well as AMD’s Radeon Vega 6 graphics that can boost up to 1.5 GHz. The Ryzen 3 5125C is the lowest in the new C-series stack with just 2 cores and 4 threads, has a consistent core clock speed of 3 GHz, and has 3 Vega graphics compute cores with a maximum boost frequency of up to 1.2 GHz.

As we go from top to bottom, each model in the line-up increases in base core frequency, while the boost clocks bar the Ryzen 3 5125C, which has a set core clock speed of 3 GHz, experience a drop in frequency. All the Ryzen 5000 C-series models feature a 15 W TDP envelope, so core frequency on both the Zen 3 cores and the Radeon Vega cores will depend on the application, task, or game being used to optimize the relative power envelope to fit within the 15 W TDP threshold.

While we don’t typically concern ourselves with vendor-given performance data, perhaps the most impressive of AMD’s claims is battery life. AMD is claiming that the Ryzen 5 5625C has up to improve battery life by 94% when directly compared to Intel’s Core i5-1135G7 processor, which, if true, is very impressive. One of the main benefits of the Chromebook series is usability, and having an improved battery life can increase overall productivity and lifespan when using it while traveling between charges.

So far, AMD has announced two of its partners already on board with its Ryzen 5000 C-series for Chromebooks, including HP and Acer. Both are launching new models due later on in the year, but AMD highlighted two new models:

HP Elite C645 G2 Chromebook

The first of the new Chromebooks to feature AMD’s Ryzen 7 5825C processor is the HP Elite C645 G2. HP is expected to offer multiple display options, including various configurations of its 14″ 1080p touchscreen panel and plenty of impressive features. These include support for up to 16 GB of LPDDR4X memory with up to 512 GB of PCIe storage. Other features include the latest Wi-Fi 6E wireless and BT 5.2 connectivity and an optional 4G LTE version. The HP Elite C645 will also have a 5 MP integrated webcam, a SmartCard terminal for a CAD-capable keyboard, and an SEC fingerprint sensor for added security.

The HP Elite C645 G2 Chromebook is expected to hit retail shelves in Q2 2022, with pricing currently unknown.

Acer Chromebook Spin 514

The second of the new Ryzen 5000 C-series Chromebooks is the Acer Chromebook Spin 514, which is a 2-in-1 convertible with a 14″ touchscreen. Acer is using the AMD Ryzen 7 5825C processor in this model, and it can support up to 256 GB of PCIe Gen 3 storage and support the latest Wi-FI 6E routers with BT 5.2 connectivity. Acer has specified that the Chromebook Spin 514 includes military-grade MIL-STD 810 durability with a Corning gorilla glass touchscreen panel that supports sRGB 100% color.

At the time of writing, Acer says the Chromebook Spin 514 will be available in Q3 2022, with expected pricing not disclosed.

It is expected that more vendors will adopt AMD’s Ryzen 5000 C-series processors for Chromebooks in the coming months, although these are OEM only, and pricing is currently unknown on each of the models.

Blizzard Entertainment has hired its first ever Vice President, Head of Culture to help make the Overwatch and Diablo company have a more “diverse, equitable, and inclusive workplace culture.”

Jessica Martinez has joined Blizzard to help lead the effort to empower workers to feel they can “learn, grow, and bring their most creative selves to their work,” Blizzard said in a news post.

Martinez previously worked at The Walt Disney Company for more than 14 years as its Chief of Staff and strategic advisor in the Parks & Resorts division.

“Jessica and the Blizzard leadership team will be responsible for growing and implementing our culture strategy, ensuring alignment across all teams and functions, and revamping learning and talent development programs,” the company said in a statement.

Jessica Martinez

Martinez said in her own statement, “When you create a people-first environment where teams feel safe, valued, and work together toward a shared purpose, everyone thrives–the employees, the players, and the business.”

Martinez will work with Blizzard’s communications, events, and the leaders of the company’s franchise teams. “Making the values of our connections show up in what we do is how we bring humanity back to business,” Martinez said.

The hiring of Martinez comes at a tumultuous time for Blizzard and parent company Activision Blizzard. For the past year, the company has made headlines for various workplace culture issues. At Blizzard specifically, the company ousted multiple developers, including Diablo 4’s director.

Former Blizzard president J. Allen Brack stepped down in 2021 in light of a state of California lawsuit alleging a widespread culture of sexual harassment and discrimination at Activision Blizzard. One of his replacements, Jen Oneal, left her position as co-president after just three months, and it was later revealed that she was not offered equal pay until resigning.

Martinez and all other Activision Blizzard employees are expected to soon become Microsoft employees, as part of the Xbox company’s $75 billion pending takeover of Activision Blizzard.

Blizzard has a number of high-profile games in the works, including World of Warcraft’s next expansion, Dragonflight, as well as Overwatch 2, Diablo 4, and Warcraft Arclight Rumble.

As previously announced by Treyarch, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War is getting the Jungle map originally from 2010’s Call of Duty: Black Ops. The developer tweeted an update to reveal Jungle would be added to Black Ops Cold War on May 6.

To celebrate the arrival of the classic map, Jungle will arrive with a 24/7 playlist of mixed game modes. This throwback map follow’s Treyarch’s previously released WMD map and Vargo 52 assault rifle for Black Ops Cold War’s first chunk of Year 2 content.

While the tweet only mentions Jungle is coming this week, Treyarch announced back in April that two new weapons were also coming to Black Ops Cold War. They’re said to be one ranged weapon and one melee weapon that players can unlock for use in multiplayer, Zombies, and Warzone. Treyarch’s Year 2 content seems to be trickling in, so it’s possible both weapons could arrive at later dates.

Additionally, new Zombies content was added for Year 2 of Black Ops Cold War. Collapse mode arrived to Zombies’ Outbreak along with a few updates and added enemy types. Treyarch even added a “Super Easter Egg” for players to discover and unlock more rewards for completing the main storyline quests.

Treyarch continues to support Black Ops Cold War as Call of Duty: Vanguard is in a third season with Warzone integration. Call of Duty Season 3: Classified Arms features new weapons and multiplayer map for Vanguard, while Warzone is getting an event themed around Godzilla and King Kong fighting on Caldera.

Call of Duty Mobile’s Season 4: Wild Dogs launched on April 27, and Activision has detailed the new Tournament Mode feature coming to Season 4 on May 6.

Season 4’s new Tournament Mode is separate to Call of Duty Mobile’s Ranked Play. While Ranked Play is for larger squads and determines qualification for the Call of Duty Mobile’s World Championship, Activision says Tournament Mode is meant for duos or solo competitors who want to prove their individual skill. It also gives players another outlet to practice in a competitive environment before climbing the Ranked Play ladder.

Players will be able to access Tournament Mode from the main Multiplayer lobby. It will have its own hub, which features a mode selection, leaderboards, and will show the player’s wins and losses during a tournament round.

Each tournament round will consist of four matches. These matches can be played on the following modes:

GunfightGunfight Team Deathmatch2v2 Team Deathmatch2v2 Kill ConfirmedFree For All

Winning matches will earn players Crowns, which is a tournament-exclusive currency for rewards. Those who win three matches will have a chance to earn double crowns, a dynamic Calling Card, and a special Tournament Crate for winning a fourth match. Players can play as many tournament rounds as they want to win that week’s rewards. Additionally, players will be able to choose to spend CoD Points for additional matches within a round.

However, Activision says the additional match purchases won’t affect the leaderboards. The publisher says a player’s leaderboard position is solely based on the number of wins, rewarding those who consistently win rounds regardless of extra match purchases.

Call of Duty Mobile’s Tournament Mode will run on a weekly reward cycle, and winning Crowns is how players will earn Milestone rewards, which is a mix of weapons, skins, and other cosmetic rewards.

Each week, a player’s Crowns will count towards Basic and Premium Milestone reward tracks, similar to how the battle pass system works. All players will receive the rewards in the Basic Milestone progression path, and can purchase the Premium Milestone reward track with COD Points.

The rewards continue to stack up in Tournament Mode with Leaderboard Rewards. While Milestone rewards are earned by accumulating crowns, the Tournament Leaderboard rewards are purely based on a player’s placement and number of wins compared to everyone else playing tournaments.

Leaderboard rewards:

The top 20% of all Tournament Mode players will earn a dynamic profile frameThe top 15% will earn that as well as a special character animationThe top 10% to earn all the above rewards plus a special title

The title for the top 10% gets upgraded for being among the Top 5%, Top 1%, and Top 1,000 on the leaderboards. Players who reach this coveted placement of Top 100 will also be able to earn CoD Points. Activision doesn’t reveal how much players will earn, but it says the CoD Point bonus is boosted significantly for players reaching Tournament Mode’s top 3 rankings in the world.

In addition to the upcoming Tournament Mode, Season 4: Wild Dogs also added a new battle pass, more maps, a new weapon, and more. Call of Duty Season 3: Classified Arms recently kicked off for Warzone and Vanguard, and there’s an upcoming event centered around a fight between Godzilla and King Kong.

OlliOlli World is already something of a strange, cartoony game, taking place in a world built for skateboarding. It’s also one populated by humans, frog businessmen, fortune-telling fish, and skate gods, whose main teachings include grinding and kick-flipping. With its upcoming DLC expansion, Void Riders, the side-scrolling skateboarding platformer is taking things a step further with a cosmic theme and the addition of a whole bunch of aliens.

Though developer Roll7 hasn’t revealed much in the way of details about what players can expect for the first story expansion for OlliOlli World, GameSpot got an exclusive look at the DLC’s key art, which gives a few clues.

“Yes, it’s as weird as it looks,” said John Ribbins, Roll7’s chief creative officer and co-founder, in an interview with GameSpot. “DLC is an opportunity to, as developers, have fun–we already know how to make the game now. And it’s like, what cool twists can we put on it, and stuff like that?”

The twists in Void Riders primarily seem to concern visits by extraterrestrials, whose ships can be seen in the art sucking up objects, characters, and cows, thereby altering OlliOlli World’s skatable landscape. Aliens previously made a few cameos in OlliOlli World’s Burntrock levels, mostly hanging around in the background as a sort of running Area 51 joke. They’re a big part of the foreground in Void Riders, composing a skate crew of their own that you’ll interact with, much like those located throughout the different levels of OlliOlli World.

The key art for OlliOlli World’s first expansion, Void Riders, suggests that it’ll make the weird skating platformer even more delightfully weird.

The prevalence of alien visitors offers a sense of the kind of gameplay experience Roll7 is going for. When it comes to its skating, OlliOlli World isn’t intensely realistic, of course–you can land ludicrous tricks, grind rail after rail without stopping, and fall hundreds of feet without injury–but the series has put a premium on some elements of realism, like the sorts of tricks skaters can pull off. With Void Riders, Ribbins said the developers were interested in exploring an experience that offers a little more freedom.

“[With OlliOlli World], it has been like, ‘let’s try and focus on things that actual skateboarders do,’ and so it’s been fun with the DLC to go, ‘Okay, the DLC, let’s free ourselves from that. What would just be a cool game mechanic or like a cool thing to do because it’s a video game?’ As opposed to being, like, ‘I also saw that on Thrasher last week,'” he explained.

“And so what we are adding is probably more at the fantastical end of the scale, I suppose, than like more at the skating end of the scale. But I think that’s fun; I think it would potentially be a little bit stale if we were just like, ‘Oh we’ve added another skateboard trick,’ or something like that. It’s been cool to be like, let’s just be really out there with this one and do some crazy stuff.”

Void Riders brings a new biome to the skate-obsessed setting of Radlandia, the spaced-out alien art style of which is hinted at in the key art. It comes along with new customization options and some new gameplay mechanics–Ribbins suggested that those alien tractor beams in the key art are for more than just sci-fi set dressing. But somewhat notably, this is a story expansion to OlliOlli World, which itself has a narrative running all through its many levels of skating mayhem. In addition to the Void Riders skate crew you can expect to interact with, the key art also shows a big purple blob creature called Nebulord taking center stage.

Aliens are a part of the levels of Burntrock, but in Void Riders they’re a much bigger deal.

Something notable about OlliOlli World’s story is how positive it is–there’s no antagonist, and the characters who show up throughout the game are encouraging of your journey to become a skate wizard. Your chief opponent in OlliOlli World is yourself, as you push to increase your skill level. A skate wizard isn’t determined by a specific score or high degree of aptitude, however, but by the personal satisfaction of playing the game and exploring the feeling of skating. Thus, the presence of the spooky-looking Nebulord immediately seems at odds with that approach.

“You put a big, spectral, purple-looking character in the background, people are going to think there’s an antagonist,” Ribbins joked. “While we want to do different stuff in this [expansion], and tell some other stories, and have new places and characters to see, we didn’t want to change [the tone] that much to be like, in this DLC, there’s a baddie who you are trying to beat. He’s not a baddie, he’s just quite selfish. He’s quite self-centered. And so that kind of brings a different spin, because you don’t really meet any characters like that in the main game.”

One of the challenges Roll7 needed to address, Ribbins said, was determining where the story of Void Riders would fit into OlliOlli World, since you spend the game with a crew of characters whose tale already has a set chronology. Roll7 landed on making Void Riders an “adjacent” story to the main game, he explained. You don’t need to have finished OlliOlli World and become a skate wizard in order to access the DLC, but that also means Void Riders is not stuck to a specific point in the main game’s story.

Being adjacent means that Void Riders has its own new characters, but it also connects to the rest of OlliOlli World and features some of the folks you meet as you travel through Radlandia. There were several characters in the main game who players only interacted with briefly during a few short conversations at the beginnings and endings of levels. Ribbins said that as the team was making OlliOlli World, the idea of spending more time with some of those characters and digging into their personalities became seeds for DLC–although he said exactly which characters you might find in the expansion is “a surprise for later.”

Expect some new ways to skate, a new biome, and new customization options in Void Riders.

In addition to new levels to skate, new characters to meet, and new mechanics to master, the expansion also brings new accessories with which to customize your skater. Some will be appropriately space-themed, it sounds like, and Ribbins said Roll7 took into account how the OlliOlli World community used and interacted with the customization options in the base game in building the new ones. The developers found, for instance, that players generally didn’t like onesies as outfits for their skaters, since they tended to limit customization options. The new clothes and accessories coming with the expansion were created with that in mind, offering more chances for players to mix and match.

And though the expansion was planned before the release of the base game, data and feedback about how players took on OlliOlli World affected how Roll7 approached setting the difficulty of the new content.

“[The main game was useful for] being able to look at how people have gone on with the game, where people have struggled, and then to try to map that to where we’re pitching the difficulty of the DLC,” he explained. “So we try and strike that balance between like, if you are halfway through the game, but you are having a good time, the DLC doesn’t require you to finish all the rest of the game and master all the mechanics to have a good time in it. It’s still a good time to be had with, like, an average player’s skill level, but there’s still a ton of challenges and side bits that you can do in there if you finished the game and mastered everything–that’s still going to really push you.”

There’s a lot about Void Riders we don’t know, but this initial look at the expansion gives the impression that it’ll be another delightfully strange foray into Radlandia. The DLC is set for release this summer and is the first of two planned story expansions. Both expansions are included in the Rad Edition of OlliOlli World on Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, PC, and Nintendo Switch, or as part of an expansion pack that will run players $15 USD.

Microsoft has announced a big new addition to the Xbox Cloud Gaming library, with Epic’s hugely popular battle royale game Fortnite now available to stream for free with no subscription required.

This is the first free-to-play game on Xbox Cloud Gaming, but more are on the way. You can play Fortnite via the cloud right now through the Xbox website for iOS, Android, Windows PC via browser, or a tablet. This is particularly noteworthy in part for iOS players, since this looks like a workaround to play Fortnite on iOS. Epic famously removed Fortnite from iOS amid its battle with Apple.

“This is just the beginning for us–we’re going to learn, implement feedback, and in time look to bring even more free-to-play titles to players through the cloud,” Microsoft said.

Microsoft also shared some stats about Xbox Cloud Gaming, reiterating that 10 million people have streamed games with Xbox Cloud Gaming thus far through Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. Additionally, people in 26 countries have used Xbox Cloud Gaming on more than 6,000 types of devices.

Microsoft also mentioned that it has worked with more than 125 developers to launch in excess of 350 games through Xbox Game Pass in the cloud. What’s more, the company said Xbox Game Pass users who make use of cloud streaming play “nearly twice as many games” as those who don’t use the cloud. It’s not hard to see why, as no local download is required, thus making it theoretically very simple to sample many games.

Xbox Cloud Gaming is included with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate. For more, check out a rundown of new additions to the Game Pass catalog for May 2022.

This year’s latest inductees into the World Video Game Hall of Fame are a quartet of influential titles. Ms. Pac-Man, Dance Dance Revolution, The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, and Sid Meier’s Civilization will be placed in the Strong National Museum of Play’s hall of fame, standing alongside other influential games from history.

This year’s selection beat Assassin’s Creed, Candy Crush Saga, Minesweeper, NBA Jam, PaRappa the Rapper, Resident Evil, Rogue, and Words with Friends to receive top honors, and have had an impact on the video game industry, popular culture, and society in general.

2022’s Video Game Hall of Fame inductees.

For Ms. Pac-Man, its more sophisticated and challenging gameplay alongside a reimagined title character made it one of the five best-selling arcade games of all time, and it joins previous inductees Pac-Man, Space Invaders, and Street Fighter II. With the character being replaced in recent releases–likely due to a legal issue–her induction is a great way to honor her legacy.

Dance Dance Revolution’s domination of arcades with its fast-paced rhythm gameplay made it a global hit when it landed in 1998, while Sid Meier’s Civilization quickly became the gold standard for simulation and strategy games after it was published in 1991.

Finally, The Legend of Zelda isn’t just considered to be one of the best Zelda games of all time–Though Stone Cold Steve Austin may disagree–but its 3D world, fluid combat, and complex puzzles inspired generations of games in its wake.

The World Video Game Hall of Fame at The Strong Museum was established in 2015 and annually adds new games to its hall of fame. Last year saw Animal Crossing, StarCraft, Where in the World Is Carmen Sandiego?, and Microsoft Flight Simulator honored for their contributions to gaming.

If you’re ever in Rochester, New York, you can actually go see the games and learn of their history, as they’ll be on permanent view on the Strong Museum’s second floor.

Despite taking place in a (mostly) open world, Halo Infinite doesn’t feature a controllable Pelican dropship. Well, it’s not supposed to, and the game’s recent Season 2 update removed a glitch that was letting players take to the skies in the enormous vehicle.

Previously, the Pelican could be piloted by completing a fairly simple glitch, as you can see in the video below. All you had to do was call in a vehicle from any of the forward operating bases on Zeta Halo, wait for the Pelican to approach, and then use your grappleshot to launch yourself on top of it. From there, you had to enter the cockpit, exit the game, load back in, and then get into the Pelican located near your position. It wasn’t equipped with weapons so it wasn’t like it was a particularly useful tool unless you hadn’t gotten other flying vehicles yet, but it was still a neat little trick.

The glitch, as reported by Reddit users, is no more. You’ll have to just let the pilot fly you from one pre-selected destination to the next during the Halo Infinite campaign, but there are a few vehicles like the Wasp and Banshee that you can still fly. These, of course, also have weapons, and you can use them to soften up an enemy position before you drop in on foot and… finish the fight.

You actually could fly the Pelican in Halo 4’s campaign near its conclusion. It features impressive firepower, though the UNSC typically uses the Pelican in order to deliver other battle-focused vehicles like tanks.

Halo Infinite’s Season 2, dubbed Lone Wolves, is available now. The new season includes a battle pass, new modes like Last Spartan Standing, and new maps. It doesn’t feature campaign co-op yet, but that is coming in August for network-based co-op, with Forge scheduled for Season 3 later this year.

Hitman 3’s roguelite mode Freelancer will be in development for a while longer than anticipated, but IO Interactive has revealed that a brand-new level for the game will be available in July. As part of a Year Two roadmap update, IO Interactive explained that thanks to the success of Hitman 3, it had the luxury to devote more time to fine-tune Freelancer mode.

“In short, this mode is quite expansive and involving,” IO Interactive said. “It’s built for players that want to dive deeper into what a Hitman game can be and for that reason, we’ve decided to give it more time. Hitman 3 has been a success and with that, we’re able to give our team that extra time to tighten the bolts and make sure that the mode is as close to our ambitions as possible.”

IO Interactive is aiming to release Freelancer mode in the second half of 2022, with the next big update for the game being an update that adds ray tracing, an overhaul of Featured Contracts, and reactivated Elusive Target missions for the Arcade mode.

The Ambrose Island map

The rocky map that was teased in January, Ambrose Island, will be released in July and is described as having an “intriguing narrative” for Hitman fans. The mission set in this stage takes place before the events of Hitman 3 and fills in a few gaps from the World of Assassination storyline. In case you missed it and you’re on Xbox, you can grab the entire trilogy through Game Pass right now.

Beyond its work on Hitman, IO Interactive is also busy developing a James Bond game that is codenamed Project 007 and has been described as being an original spin on the iconic spy.

June’s Xbox and Bethesda presentation won’t be short, as the showcase will run for almost 90 minutes. Xbox general manager Aaron Greenberg responded to a question on Twitter regarding the length of the upcoming livestream event and revealed–much like previous showcases–that the broadcast will run for “around” 90 minutes in total.

“We don’t have a final show run time yet,” Greenberg tweeted. “But yes typically we end up close to that 90 minutes mark. Will keep folks posted as we get closer!”

Compared to other live events such as Sony’s PlayStation State of Play or Nintendo Directs, Microsoft’s runtime has usually been the longest. Usually held annually around June, they tend to be a massive highlight reel of multiple first and third-party games. The joint games showcase was announced last week and will be broadcast online on June 12.

While E3 2022 has been canceled, the Xbox and Bethesda Showcase can be viewed on the following platforms:

YouTube.com/XboxTwitch.tv/XboxTwitch.tv/XboxASLTwitter.com/XboxFacebook.com/XboxTikTok.com/@Xbox

The Xbox division has a major number of games in development right now, such as Avowed, Everwild, Fable, and Senua’s Saga: Hellblade 2. On the Bethesda side, there’s Redfall, Elder Scrolls VI, and this November’s Starfield, easily the most-anticipated game of the show.

There’ll likely also be more announcements on upcoming indie games and which titles will be coming to Xbox Game Pass in the future, making for a showcase that covers multiple angles.
