A real-life Witcher school live-action role-playing event in Poland will be closing down, and its organizers have cited CD Projekt Red’s decision to pull its license as the reason behind the closure. 5 Żywiołów, the company behind the school that taught fencing, leatherwork, how to cast magical signs, and more, claimed in a Facebook post (via Eurogamer) that CDPR “terminated the license agreement” with a three-month notice back in February due to negative media attention that staff member Anna Wawrzyniak had generated.

Wawrzyniak, who is the wife of 5 Żywiołów founder Dastin Wawrzyniak, worked as a lawyer for the company from 2017-2019 and was commissioned by the ultra-conservative Polish Catholic organization Ordo Iuris to work on “the legal mechanisms for introducing and enforcing the vaccination obligation and the possible consequences of failure to comply with it.” She was also working on “the draft of a law penalizing illegal abortion,” according to the Facebook post.

Ordo Iuris has been reported to be an anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ organization, according to Polish media reports, and after 5 Żywiołów contacted CD Projekt Red to explain why Wawrzyniak was in these news stories, the publisher decided to cancel its licensing agreement with the live-action role-playing school.

5 Żywiołów added that it had always strived to keep its employees’ personal and professional lives separate. “We still do not plan to evaluate the views and activities in the private sphere of our colleagues and participants,” it wrote in in response to a comment on the Facebook post. “This would open a Pandora’s box full of prejudices and quarrels.”

In a statement shared with Eurogamer, CD Projekt Red said, “In February we decided to end our cooperation with the organisers of Witcher School, and now the contractual notice period of three months has ended. For more context, this cooperation was about the LARP itself, and potential merchandise tied to it. We do not provide further details on the matter.”

The company plans to launch a new LARP experience based on an original setting in Spring 2023. Meanwhile, The Witcher series is returning, with a new game in development that has just concluded its “research phase.” Unlike previous Witcher games, The Witcher 4 will be developed on Unreal Engine 5 as part of a multi-year development deal with Epic Games.

Sony has announced a new PlayStation State of Play airing next week, promising new announcements including games for the PSVR2. The event, which is said to run for roughly 30 minutes, will take place on Thursday, June 2 at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET.

The announcement did not include many details on what the presentation will include. An accompanying PlayStation Blog post promised “exciting reveals from our third-party partners, plus a sneak peek at several games in development for PlayStation VR2.” That could mean we won’t see any of Sony’s non-VR, first-party lineup. Reporter Jeff Grubb speculated that this could be where we see Street Fighter 6 debut.

This event is coming amid various other Not-E3 events, and more than a week before the competing Xbox and Bethesda Showcase. There is no traditional E3 this year, but we are seeing several publishers and platform-holders announce events to take place in June regardless.

State of Play returns next week! Tune in live at 3pm PT on June 2 for reveals, announcements, and more: https://t.co/3lqi9GL9VZ pic.twitter.com/NLLTAgvgLY

Sony has consistently said that its big 2022 game, God of War: Ragnarok, is still on-target to launch this year. That makes the potential absence of first-party games notable, but Sony could be planning a separate event to show off its own games. For more, check out what we want to see from PlayStation at Not-E3 this year.

Sega Sammy has officially revealed a Persona slot machine, titled Persona 5 For Reels. Like the popular JRPG games, the Persona slots feature stylish anime visuals while the cast battles the screen with their signature moves and the All Out Attack animation if you’re lucky enough to hit the jackpot.

This isn’t the first time that Persona 5 and gambling have crossed over, as the main game featured a level where the Phantom Thieves had to infiltrate a casino. Gaming IPs are also often seen in slot machines across the world and can prove to be lucrative attractions.

These machines will roll out worldwide later this year.

Konami for example, recorded its best year ever thanks in part to Pachinko and Casino machines. Revenue in Konami’s Gaming & Systems division was up 54% to $199.7 million in the financial year that ended on March 31.

Outside of the casinos, Atlus still has several Persona announcements to make this year. Atlus has been celebrating the 25th anniversary–and 15 million lifetimes sales–of the Persona series over the last couple of months by launching Persona 4 Arena Ultimax and a $400 Persona vinyl record set.

Xur is back in the Solar System in Destiny 2, just in time for the launch of the Season of the Haunted‘s new dungeon. Prepare to take on the Nightmares of the Derelict Leviathan with new Exotic weapons and armor–here’s where you can find Xur this weekend and what he’s selling.

The daily reset on Friday also marks Xur’s arrival, so we’ll update this article when he lands.

Xur is present every weekend in Destiny 2, starting with the daily reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET each Friday. His exact location is always a mystery when he first arrives, as he is not listed on the map, and for novice players, he can be easy to miss. However, there are a set number of locations where he takes up residence, including the Tower Hangar area, on Nessus in Watcher’s Grave, and in the Winding Cove area of the EDZ.

Alongside changes in his location, Xur’s inventory also rotates weekly. That means it’s worth visiting him each time to check out his new weapons and rolls on Exotic and Legendary armor. You can visit him any time between his arrival Friday and the weekly reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET the following Tuesday when Xur departs the Solar System.

My Time at Sandrock is suspiciously lax about how quickly you need to reach your goals. It could be that it wants you to go at your own pace, but it also might be quietly judging you. I don’t want it to look unfavorably upon your crafting skills and work ethic, so here are some tips for beginners that will get you some good speed off the starting line.

Go to bed at a decent hour

It’s tempting to just keep cramming food into your face to keep your stamina topped up, but eventually, your character will putter out anyway. If you go to bed past midnight your character will complain the next day that they need to go to bed earlier. Stay up later until 03:00 and your lightweight digital persona will pass out. If you get a good night’s sleep, you’ll receive an experience and attack buff.

A decent strategy is to make a routine of having worktime and downtime. Worktime is anything that requires exertion, whether that’s exploration or resource harvesting. Downtime is the stuff that doesn’t drain your stamina, which includes shopping, crafting, or talking to NPCs. Then, just keep an eye on the time and get to bed at a good hour. An adult requires eight hours of sleep every night, and it doesn’t look like Sandrock has discovered coffee yet.

Meet the NPCs

It can take some time to get in close with the NPCs. There’s no need to rush straight into romance until you can impress them with your fishing and crafting skills. However, it is worth taking the time to meet them all for the first time. Every one of them will give you a gift to commemorate the moment just for talking to them. And when you’re starting out, you need all the help you can get.

If you’re wondering about relationships, only some NPCs can be romanced. You can tell which are available, as the meter under their relationship panel will show hearts instead of stars.

Increase your inventory space

Even after a short amount of time collecting resources in My Time at Sandrock, you’ll probably bump up against some pretty restrictive inventory space. You can build chests to hold your stuff. Conveniently, all those resources are accessible from your various tools, so feel free to cram all your resources in there. However, there is a better way.

You’ll need more inventory space pretty quickly in Sandrock.

When viewing your inventory, there’s a rather easy-to-miss icon at the very end of your stockpile. It’s a blank tile with a plus (+) symbol on it. Select this, and you’ll be presented with a prompt to buy additional inventory spots. It starts off at a meager 10 gol to upgrade but becomes more expensive as you buy more and more. Thankfully, it’s slow to become too pricey, so feel free to pack in as many spots as you can afford. Your wallet may hate you, but your pockets will be thankful.

Maintain your equipment

To keep things running smoothly at your workshop, you need to keep your gear in top shape. Each machine requires three things: fuel, water, and dusting.

Fuel is rather straightforward. When using the machine, you can select the fuel menu and choose what you cram into it. It can be wood, power crystals, or even just dregs. They don’t use fuel when they aren’t actively crafting anything, so don’t be afraid to just top them up.

The next requirement is water, and every active machine draws from your water supply. This is the big tank that sits next to your house. You can get water from two places: The first is by collecting dew from just about every resource node and crafting them into water. One unit of water takes a lot of dew, though this can be cut back on with the right upgrades. Most likely, you’ll need to buy your water from the store at the far edge of the oasis (facing the street). If you run out of water, all your machines will shut down, so make sure you stock up regularly.

As for dusting, you’ll run into this problem after your very first sandstorm. Piles of sand will build up on your machines and slow them down. To get rid of them, you first must craft a feather duster using the recipe sold at the commerce store. Then, just use that when the machine is highlighted, and it should clear the sand away. Even without sandstorms, the grit builds up in your works, so make sure you give them a dusting every now and then to make sure they’re in ship shape.

Only pick commissions you know you can complete

It’s very tempting to pick the highest paying jobs off the commerce bulletin board, but be careful. If you pick one that you don’t have the ability to complete, you’ll be stuck with it until it expires and then penalized for failing it. My Time at Sandrock has no qualms about throwing tasks at you that require equipment that you don’t have. Make sure you keep in mind what can be made easily. Easy commissions completed regularly will add up a lot faster than harder tasks that require you to scramble to upgrade your apparatus. Work smarter, not harder.

Six years have passed since the last mainline installment in the decidedly not-so-final Final Fantasy series, making this one of the largest gaps between games in the series’ 35 years of history–though all that waiting seems to be for good reason. We only have one trailer for Final Fantasy 16, but what we’ve seen makes the game look like a high-fantasy epic combining the grandeur of older titles with the cutting-edge technology of newer games, making us hopeful that this next entry will be well-worth the wait.

However, with Summer Game Fest Live and plenty of Not-E3 showcases just around the corner, it seems likely our wait is almost over. In the next few weeks, we expect to hear a bit more about the highly-anticipated RPG–and maybe even get a release date. Until then, here’s everything we know about Final Fantasy 16 so far.

Release date

Final Fantasy 16 might not have an official release date, but a recent interview with the game’s producer, Naoki Yoshida, makes it sound like the game is coming sooner than later. On May 5, Yoshida told UNIQLO magazine the game is near the end of its development, before sharing a bit more about what fans can expect.

“Now we’re at the finale of the new game FF16’s development,” Yoshida told UNIQLO. “Unlike an online game that depicts multiple players simultaneously, FF16 focuses on an individual so the state of immersion into the story will be different. I feel like the story will be very deep.”

All that said, it seems possible FF16 could come out later this year. After all, it has been in development for several years now. What’s more, last summer, Yoshida confirmed the development team had already finished the main story scenario for Final Fantasy 16, as well as the English voiceovers.

Platforms

Much like Final Fantasy 7 Remake, Final Fantasy 16 will be a limited-time PlayStation exclusive. Unlike FF7 Remake, however, it won’t be cross-generation, meaning PS4 owners will have to make the move to PS5 in order to play it.

Square Enix shared this news during the game’s reveal trailer, noting, “The following content is captured on PC emulating the PS5 experience,” before adding the latest entry in the Final Fantasy saga will, “not [be] available on other platforms for a limited time after release on PS5.”

Is Final Fantasy 16 coming to PC or Xbox?

Rejoice, PC gamers! The trailer also stated the game is coming to PC following its exclusivity window, though as of right now there’s no word on how long that might last. If it follows the same trend as FF7 Remake, it’s likely FF16 will make its way over to PC about a year and a half after its initial console release. It also wouldn’t be too much of a surprise if FF16 comes to Xbox at some point, given that a handful of Final Fantasy titles already live on Xbox platforms.

Trailers

The first trailer for FF16 is titled “Awakening,” and offers four minutes of story, cutscenes, and gameplay. It also features a powerful orchestrated theme with a few Final Fantasy touches, like the iconic Crystal Prelude. If we had to take a wild guess, it sounds a bit like composer Masayoshi Soken’s work on FFXIV: Heavensward.

Behind the scenes

In addition to the detailed reveal trailer, Square Enix also launched an official website with in-depth looks at FF16’s new world and characters to get you started on understanding the backstory. What’s notable about this entry, in particular, is that it’s being developed by Creative Business Unit III–which is the not-so-flashy name for the division behind the incredible MMORPG Final Fantasy XIV. It’s promising given that Naoki Yoshida is leading production on FF16–he led the team behind the rebirth of FFXIV and continues to direct the MMO, which keeps getting better and is regarded as top-tier in video game storytelling. FF16 itself is being directed by Hiroshi Takai, who has a lengthy history with Final Fantasy and Square Enix, and was even part of developing FFXIV’s reboot.

The story so far

From what we can tell from the trailer and official website, there’s conflict between realms (basically nations) in the world of Valisthea and a bunch of political drama, but also a focus on Dominants. Domnants are the few special people who can wield the power of Eikons, which are what summons are called in FF16’s world (and in FFXIV).

It looks like you’ll go through two separate time frames in FF16’s story, which you can see from main character Clive Rosfield’s evolution from a spiffy young man with a fancy haircut to a grizzled veteran with a scruffy beard and a mark tattooed on his face later in life. He’s the son of his realm’s archduke, and wields Eikon-related powers in combat but isn’t necessarily a Dominant himself. He’s sworn to protect his brother Joshua, the young boy in the trailer who was fated as a Dominant instead. However, as shown in the trailer, Joshua couldn’t control his Eikon–he summons Phoenix after watching someone presumably important get killed right before his eyes. These events are capped by a battle between Phoenix and Ifrit, which might be the tragedy (stated in the official character profiles) that drives Clive in FF16.

Another character seen in the trailer is Jill Warrick. She’s the young girl with grayish hair who accompanies Joshua. She’s said to have a complicated life and comes from another realm. She was essentially adopted by the Rosfields, and acts as a mediary between warring nations. She’s said to be a trusted confidant to both Clive and Joshua.

Throughout the trailer, you see other characters in battle and in conversations about the political turmoil that seems to be fueling the war in Valisthea. You see other iconic Eikons like Shiva and Titan being used on the battlefield. It looks like Eikons, and Dominants by extension, are akin to powerful weapons of war that shift the balance of power between realms in Valisthea. There’s also a fight against an armor-clad lance-wielding Dragoon, said to be an Imperial Viper, which has the characters shook–another series staple.

FF16’s world also revolves around Mothercrystals, which are said to bless the land with aether (basically magic). But a destructive force called The Blight is also washing over the world. It’s worth keeping in mind that FF16’s tagline is, “The legacy of the crystals has shaped our history for long enough.” We’re not sure what it means, but it’s provocative and may have to do with what’s been happening to Valisthea.

What the logo can tell us

We can always count on artist Yoshitaka Amano to create a new logo for each Final Fantasy that tells us something about the game’s story. In the case of FF16’s logo, it features Ifrit and Phoenix face-to-face in a fight, which is a battle that concludes the trailer. With Ifrit as a key opposing force and Phoenix being the Eikon that the Rosfields wield, this seems to be a central conflict that drives the game. It also appears that Eikons are pivotal to how FF16’s world operates, more so than previous Final Fantasy games.

Gameplay

From the snippets of gameplay in the trailer, FF16 takes on an action-RPG style of combat system and looks like it shares similarities to FF15 and FF7 Remake. Clive can cast fireballs, engage at melee range with his sword and warp-like abilities, and use a few powers that look like they’re tied to Eikons (indicated by the stone fist summoned in the fight against a Dragoon).

No UI or HUD elements were shown, so it’s hard to tell if or how it incorporate parts of the series’ iconic ATB (active time battle) system, how spellcasting might work, or even how combat encounters flow. We’ve also only seen Clive in action, so we’re unsure if there’s a party system or how it would work (if it exists).

Ryota Suzuki, who was a combat designer for Devil May Cry 5 and Dragon’s Dogma, is the battle director for FF16, which could result in something quite exciting. And despite this renewed focus on action, producer Naoki Yoshida noted that this new approach will not come at the expense of the game’s story.

How to preorder

Sorry, folks. You’ll have to wait a bit longer for preorders to go live, but rest assured we’ll let you know when they do.

The Lost Sands Adventure in Sea of Thieves is live now through June 9, tasking players with restoring Golden Sands to its former glory–or destroying it forever. In a first for Rare’s swashbuckling adventure, it seems the path you choose will have a permanent effect on the game’s map. The Adventure revolves around choosing a side to begin with and completing a set of tasks to aid your faction. While the event lasts, though, you can complete the other faction’s quest and take on a handful of other tasks to help ensure your side wins.

How to start Sea of Thieves Lost Sands Adventure

You can begin this leg of Merrick’s story by speaking with Larinna at any Outpost. She represents the Bilge Rats and is always standing outside the tavern. Choose the last dialogue option to begin the adventure, and then Larinna presents you with a choice. You can help rebuild Golden Sands (the Hunter’s Path) or you can investigate the strange sightings (Servant’s Path).

While the phrasing suggests the Servant’s Path is just about gathering intel, it isn’t. Choosing the Servant’s Path allies you with those who wish to keep Merrick’s band from rebuilding Golden Sands.

Which side you choose isn’t hugely significant at first. After completing one round of tasks, you can choose the other path and continue helping both sides–or just one–until the event ends on June 9. If more players help Merrick by the event’s end, Golden Sands will be restored, and if more side with the Servant of the Flame, then the outpost will be no more.

The Adventure tab shows who’s in the lead with a little icon–Merrick, if the Hunters are winning, and the Servant if not.

Lost Sands Adventure rewards

You’ll earn three Mementos for clearing both sides and completing all 11 Deeds.

Lost Sands Adventure: Hunter’s Path guide

You’ll be helping Merrick rebuild Golden Shores if you follow the Hunter’s Path.

Unlike Tall Tales, this Adventure has no checkpoints. Once you speak with Merrick and get your tasks from him, you’ll have to complete all the steps in one go without exiting the game.

Hunter’s Path step 1: Find Merrick

If you choose the Hunter’s Path, your first task is finding Merrick. Head to Golden Sands at D10 on your map, and you’ll find Merrick outside the Gold Hoarder’s tent. Speak with him, then speak with him again and choose to “continue Hunter’s Path.” Merrick will mention what he needs from you and write it down on a handy list.

Hunter’s Path step 2: Tina’s crate of rum bottles

Merrick’s first task is finding Tina on Cannon Cove (G10) and bringing back a crate of rum bottles from her, but you’ll have to find the bottles first. Turn around from Tina, and you’ll see a shattered boat with a yellow flag in the rubble. The map is near the yellow flag, and as always with these maps, the X truly does mark the spot where your treasure is. Reaper Phantoms will appear once the rum is out.

Avoid jumping or falling with the crate, as either action will damage it. While Merrick will take supplies and rum in any condition, the rum must be in perfect condition to clear the related Deed.

The task is fairly straightforward, though you’ll need to sail carefully if you want to complete the Deed. Other players helping the Servant may target your ship and sabotage the delivery trip or try and steal the supplies.

Hunter’s Path step 3: Sharon’s sailcloth

This step takes a bit longer, since you’ll have to travel to Smuggler’s Bay, located at F3 on the map, and getting it to Merrick in perfect condition is also a bit trickier. Sharon is near the Survivor’s Camp, helpfully marked by another yellow flag, and tells you that she buried her supplies too. This map is also in a broken boat near yet another yellow flag. Get the map, find the X, and dig up the sailcloth.

The sailcloth won’t count as in perfect condition if it gets wet, so you’ll want to place it near the shore, away from water and with a clear view of your ship. Get back in your ship, and use the harpoon to pull the sailcloth on board. Then stow it somewhere it’s less likely to get wet–on top of the map table, for example, if you have the hatches closed.

Take it back to Merrick to complete this phase. Speak with Merrick again, and choose “Complete Hunter’s Path” to finish this branch of the Adventure and get your sail.

Lost Sands Adventure: Servant’s Path guide

The Servant’s Path allies you with the Reapers for several shady deeds.

If you choose to help the Servant of the Flame, the path starts with a detour to Wanderer’s Refuge at F12 on the map.

Servant’s Path step 1: Locate the shadowy figure

Larinna’s note mentions a “shadowy figure” lurking near the island’s highest bell. Climb up to the island’s highest point. You should see the shadow in the bushes before it darts away, though it’s nearly impossible to notice at night.

You don’t have to actually see the figure to progress the quest, though. Just reach the bell, and then get your compass out. Face southwest, and walk towards the glowing birds until you reach a cannon. The figure will dash away again. Head southeast toward the center of the island, and you’ll find an altar similar to the one in the Reaper’s Hideout with the shadowy figure standing nearby.

Speak with him, then head to the Reaper’s Hideout and speak with him again. Choose the Servant’s Path option again, and he’ll give you your list of tasks, along with a Servant’s Compass.

Servant’s Path step 2: Locate your Soulflame Rowboat

Follow the compass towards the smaller island northwest of the main one, and continue until you reach the northwestern shore. Your Soulflame Rowboat is there, and you have to use it to complete the next tasks.

If you’re using a controller, hold both the triggers down until the controller vibrates, and then release them to move faster.

Servant’s Path step 3: Collect the Relic Cache from a Smuggler

Row northwest towards Twin Grove (H11)–use the Servant’s Compass to make sure you’re on the right track–and head towards the center of the island, where there’s a cluster of barrels and some foliage. The Smuggler should be here, and you can take the cache and be on your way.

If the Smuggler isn’t there, it could be either a glitch or because your regular ship is too near. Make sure your ship is out of viewing range from Twin Grove, or the Smuggler won’t appear. If it’s a glitch, the only thing we’ve found that fixes the problem is exiting the game and restarting the Servant’s Path.

Servant’s Path step 4: Deliver the Relic Cache to a Smuggler

Take your cache and row to Cannon Cove in G10, the same location you’ll find Tina and the rum crates. While there’s no way to compromise the Relic Cache’s condition, you’re more likely to run into Hunter’s Path players on Cannon Cove. It’s an opportunity for you both to sabotage each other, so be careful as you go.

Follow the Servant’s Compass as usual, and you’ll find the Smuggler hiding in a bush again. Hand the Cache over, then get back in your rowboat.

Servant’s Path step 5: Destroy Soulflame Rowboat at Golden Sands

Follow the compass back to Golden Sands, and get out when you reach the right spot. At the back of the boat is a barrel. Interact with the barrel to light the fuse, and your boat will explode a few moments later.

Head back to the Reaper’s Hideout, and speak with the Servant of the Flame to finish the quest and receive your Servant’s Lantern.

How to rebuild Golden Sands or destroy Golden Sands

Once you’ve finished both paths, you can still take part in the event and try to influence the side of your choosing.

If you want to rebuild Golden Sands:

Bring supply crates to Merrick. You can get them from Tina, or just bring any fruit or other supply crate from around the sea. Condition doesn’t matter.Bring Relic Caches to Merrick. This requires starting or completing the Servant’s Path, and instead of delivering the Cache to a Smuggler, you’ll just take it to Merrick.Destroy any Soulflame Rowboats you find (that aren’t near Golden Sands).

If you want to destroy Golden Sands:

Bring Sharon’s Sailcloth and Tina’s Rum to the Servant instead of Merrick. Condition doesn’t matter.Bring any spare Relic Caches to the Servant.Row extra Soulflame Rowboats you find to Golden Sands and destroy them.

Both sides can also hamper the others’ efforts by destroying ships or stealing supplies. While it won’t count as helping your faction, it will at least slow your opponents down.

Lost Sands Adventure journals

You’ll need to find four of Merrick’s journals and four Servant journals to complete the Adventure’s Deeds.

Head of Xbox Phil Spencer stated today in an all-hands meeting that he would recognize Raven Software’s union pending Xbox’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard, according to Kotaku.

During the meeting, Spencer told his employees, “Once the deal closes, we would absolutely support [an] employees’ organization that’s in place.” Kotaku was able to verify the events of the meeting with a video recording that was provided.

“We think it is a right of employees and something that can be a part of a relationship between a company and people who work at the company,” Spencer stated.

This affirmation from Spencer comes days after Raven Software formed the first union at a major studio in a 19-3 vote. Spencer, who has in the past admitted that he wouldn’t obstruct unionization efforts and claimed to have little experience with unions, told attendees today that he has been educating himself about them.

Despite the announcement and gesture, Spencer reportedly stressed that Microsoft does not currently have a relationship with either the Communication Workers of America or the Game Workers Alliance, Raven Software’s newly formed union.

Xbox’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard is still being investigated, but in the meantime the lawsuits against the publisher have only persisted since it initially made headlines last year for fostering a sexist workplace culture. Outside of lawsuits, Activision Blizzard has been mired in controversy, including the removal of a vaccination mandate for in-office workers that prompted a walkout months ago and repeatedly impeding Raven Software’s unionization efforts since the studio’s QA department first walked out last year.

At Computex 2022, the CEO of AMD, Dr. Lisa Sui, unveiled its Ryzen 7000 series of processors, as well as the associated AM5 platform. But while discussing specific details about its new platform for Zen 4 and beyond, AMD inadvertently ended up creating a conflux of confusion around the AM5 platform by quoting different power figures to different groups. Ultimately, at different points AMD was quoting 170 Watts as both the highest nominal TDP supported by the platform, as well as the Power Package Tracking (PPT) rating, which is the absolute highest amount of power a chip can draw under load. It goes without saying that these two claims shouldn’t both be right, and a correction was needed.

As first reported by the Tom’s Hardware crew, AMD has published a statement addressing the confusion, and proving the correct values. In short, the 170 Watt TDP was correct. Meanwhile the PPT value is actually 230 Watts – which at 1.35x the TDP rating, is typical for AMD’s Ryzen processors.

AMD’s full statement is below:

AMD would like to issue a correction to the socket power and TDP limits of the upcoming AMD Socket AM5. AMD Socket AM5 supports up to a 170W TDP with a PPT of up to 230W. TDP*1.35 is the standard calculation for TDP v. PPT for AMD sockets in the “Zen” era, and the new 170W TDP group is no exception (170*1.35=229.5).

This new TDP group will enable considerably more compute performance for high core count CPUs in heavy compute workloads, which will sit alongside the 65W and 105W TDP groups that Ryzen is known for today. AMD takes great pride in providing the enthusiast community with transparent and forthright product capabilities, and we want to take this opportunity to apologize for our error and any subsequent confusion we may have caused on this topic.

The overall increase in power specification figures for the AM5 platform was not unexpected – part of the benefit of the move to LGA sockets is additional pins for power delivery – but this finally settles the matter of just how much power AMD’s new socket and platform are designed to deliver. Motherboard vendors will no doubt go (well) past this on their high-end boards, of course, but 170W/230W will be the baseline for any motherboard that wants to officially support high-end AM5 chips.

CPU power consumption has been on the rise for the past several years, as we’re now well into the Dark Silicon era. While an individual CPU core still only draws a modest amount of power – on the order of 20W to 30W for a high-performance core – the total power requirement quickly balloons for high-end processors, which pack upwards of 16 cores. As a result, power delivery limits are typically the constraining factor for heavily multi-threaded workloads, as CPUs have to back down on clockspeeds in order to stay within their power envelopes. Increasing platform power limits, in turn, offers more headroom for keeping more cores clocked higher more often.

Though it should be noted that AMD’s clarifications today are for the AM5 socket, not the initial Ryzen 7000 series chips that will use it. AMD doesn’t necessarily have to tap into the full TDP of the socket right away – though for the aforementioned MT performance reasons, there’s good reason to. So officially, we still don’t know what the TDPs of the high-end Ryzen 7000 processors will be; but unofficially, it wouldn’t be surprising to see the top chips approach 170 Watts.
