In a recent interview, Blizzard studio head Mike Ybarra attempted to address criticism of the developer, foregrounding changes to company culture and defending Diablo Immortal.

In a profile from the LA Times, Ybarra stated that he believes Blizzard is addressing the employee concerns that are in his control, though he acknowledged that it is an ongoing process. When asked what actions he is taking to change Blizzard, he said, “We have taken two or three key people who identify as women, across every team, and I meet monthly with them. We talk about what will make Blizzard great for women. Our hope is that employees recognize these changes, and people start feeling more safe and more comfortable here.” He emphasized that these meetings are not only with high-level staff, but with entry- and mid-level employees. He also expressed a commitment toward equal pay and said that recent hires Jessica Martinez and Makaiya Brown are making the development process more equitable.

On the business side, Ybarra defended Diablo Immortal’s microtransactions, saying, “The philosophy was always to lead with great gameplay and make sure that hundreds of millions of people can go through the whole campaign without any costs. From that standpoint, I feel really good about it as an introduction to Diablo.” Blizzard recently outlined plans for the free-to-play mobile title, but did not address criticism of the monetization. Ybarra expressed a desire to release more games more consistently, criticizing the ten-year release gap between Diablo 3 and Diablo Immortal. He also affirmed plans for BlizzCon to return in 2023.

After expressing hope that the company has grown beyond elements of its past, Ybarra said, “I don’t think it ever ends. There’s no high-five that we met our commitments. This is something that is going to be in our DNA forever.” It’s a haunting statement to read as the Activision Blizzard King Worker Alliance announced plans today for a walkout on July 21, citing a disconnect between the promises of leadership and practical reality of employees.

The workers’ organization expressed concerns about the safety of employees in states where abortion has been outlawed and stated that the company has inadequately addressed sexual harassment. The group demanded more robust healthcare plans and access to the sexual harassment audit requested by shareholders, among other demands detailed in their statement.

Apex Legends and Battlefield 2042 players with an active EA play membership have two new treats to look forward to this month. EA Play regularly rewards subscribers with free loot in various EA-owned games. This month’s rewards include an Apex Legends transition screen and a player card for Battlefield 2042.

Apex Legends

Apex Legends is getting a new transition screen exclusively for EA Play members, titled Let’s Do This. Transition screens appear between matches when the game is loading, adding some variation to what would otherwise be a single, repetitive loading screen. “Let’s do this” is a phrase commonly used by Wraith, who also has a holospray with the same phrase displayed on it, so it’s possible the new transition screen will feature her.

The Let’s Do This transition screen will be available starting on July 12–make sure you grab it before it disappears on August 15.

Battlefield 2042

This month, Battlefield 2042 players with an EA Play membership will gain access to the Steadfast player card. The free reward is already accessible to EA Play members, and will be available until July 30. Similar to banner cards in Apex Legends, Battlefield 2042’s player cards display a player’s username, level, title, background, and three achievement badges.

EA’s subscription service regularly rewards members with free in-game items, discounts on game purchases, and other exclusive perks. Check out the official EA Play website for more information on membership benefits.

The remake of Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII that was announced last month won’t just see the game’s visuals upgraded, but also its gameplay. One aspect of the Final Fantasy VII prequel that will remain intact though is its unique Digital Mind Wave combat system, which was one of the more well-regarded parts of the PSP game when it first released.

Functioning as a slot machine-like gameplay mechanic, the DMW would automatically spin once Zack Fair had earned enough Soldier Points by defeating enemies. If luck was on your side, you’d line up the same three images and unleash the appropriate Limit Break attack on enemies. Other bonuses included Zack being healed, his Materia being powered up, and his stats increasing tremendously if the reels all showed a lucky seven image.

The Final Fantasy VII account had tweeted this week that Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will feature a new menu-based battle system, leading some fans to believe that the DMW system had been done away with. In a follow-up tweet, the Final Fantasy VII account clarified that DMW is still in the game, and appears to be unchanged.

DMW stands for “Digital Mind Wave” and features slot reels which turn automatically during battle.

Other changes coming to the game include improved camera and character movements, an optimized UI, new background music arrangements by Takeharu Ishimoto, and full voice-acting throughout the prequel. In case you missed it, the Final Fantasy VII 25th Anniversary Celebration livestream also revealed a closed beta test for mobile RPG FFVII Ever Crisis, the first trailer for Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, and confirmation that the Final Fantasy VII remake project will be a trilogy.

While you’ll have to wait until next year’s winter season to play Final Fantasy VII: Rebirth, Crisis Core: Final Fantasy VII Reunion will launch this winter on Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC.

The Division Resurgence is a new mobile game based in the universe of The Division coming soon to iOS and Android devices. Like its console and PC counterparts, it will be a co-op third-person-shooter RPG with a separate story that will be canonical to the larger universe.

Alongside the new story, the mobile game also features different classes, new gear and weapons, and new characters. Resurgence takes place in New York City and according to the press release will offer “a unique perspective on key story events that have taken place in The Division and The Division 2” with players taking on the role of first-wave agents. The original Division takes place in Manhattan while the sequel takes place in Washington DC.

Ubisoft is referring to the game as open-world and says players will be able to roam freely around the urban environment and will feature both story missions and world activities for cooperative agents to complete. Ubisoft says the game can also be played alone.

The Division Resurgence

Similar to the console and PC games, players will be able to customize and upgrade their Division agent. You will also be able to unlock specializations with unique signature weapons and gadgets that can be changed any time with the goal of letting players develop good cooperative synergies.

Ubisoft does not yet have a release date for The Division Resurgence, but you can opt to participate in upcoming tests (the press release for the game poitedly does not call it a beta) for the game by visiting the official website.

GameSpot gave the original game an 8/10 in its The Division review. In its The Division 2 review, GameSpot gave the sequel a 9/10.

THQ Nordic has announced that PS5 and Xbox Series X|S editions of Biomutant will be released on September 6. In case you missed it when it launched last year, Biomutant takes place in a post-apocalypse environment where you control a custom furry anthropomorphic creature that is tasked with saving the world and listening to Richard Attenborough-like narration throughout its journey.

On PS5, Biomutant will have three graphic modes that players can choose from and enhanced haptic feedback features through the console’s DualSense controller.

Quality Mode caps the game at 30fps and a 4K resolution, Quality Unleashed renders the game at up to 4K resolution and averages 50-60fps, and Performance mode runs with a locked 60fps at a 1440p resolution.

On Xbox Series X, Biomutant offers native 4K resolution with up to 60fps, and 1440p resolution and up to 60fps on Xbox Series S. Xbox Series X gets the same graphical modes as PS5, while the Series S versions of those visual modes have lower resolutions but identical frame rates.

The good news for owners of Biomutant’s Xbox One and PS4 editions is that they can upgrade to the newer versions for free, and import their progress within the same console family. On PS5, Biomutant will also make use of that system’s Activity Card feature which provides a number of helpful guides and walkthroughs.

“While it might not always hit the mark, Biomutant is an ambitiously flawed game from a small studio, and the games industry could always use more risky endeavors like this one,” Richard Wakeling wrote in GameSpot’s Biomutant review.

Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course takes players to Inkwell Isle IV, a brand-new little world filled with its own unique bosses. Inkwell Isle IV also contains a mysterious puzzle that players can solve. While it is an optional objective, it’s certainly worth figuring out due to what happens after you solve it. If the mystery behind the Broken Relic, Climbing Contest, and graveyard is tripping you up, we’ve put together a guide that breaks down the logic for solving Cuphead’s graveyard puzzle. You can eventually turn the Broken Relic into the Cursed Relic and then finally get the big prize: the Divine Relic.

Buy the Broken Relic

Cuphead DLC Broken Relic

First, you need to make sure you buy the Broken Relic from Porkrind’s Emporium (the shop). You can purchase it right at the beginning of the DLC, before you fight any bosses. It only costs one coin. Don’t bother equipping it, as the Broken Relic charm doesn’t do anything in battle.

Talk to the climbers

Cuphead DLC Climbing Contest

There’s a podium right next to the shop. If you talk to one of them, they will tell you about the climbing contest. All three of the contestants will inform you how they fared in the race. I recommend taking screenshots of each dialogue bubble. I used my smartphone to take pictures. You’ll need to reference these descriptions later.

How to solve graveyard puzzle

Cuphead DLC Graveyard Puzzle

You can’t get to the graveyard until you beat Glumstone the Giant and Mortimer Freeze. In the next section of Inkwell Isle IV, you’ll see a graveyard with nine headstones. Feel free to talk the NPC standing to the right of the graveyard. He simply gives you a hint about what you need to solve the puzzle, which is the Broken Relic and the dialogue from the climbers.

The climbers were giving you hints in the form of a riddle. Unfortunately, you might not have the same clues or solution as we did. In fact, the two of us here at GameSpot who played the DLC ahead of its release had entirely different clues and solutions. You have to press the action button in front of a headstone to get a ghost to pop up. The center headstone isn’t part of the puzzle, so you’re left with eight possible choices. You have to call the ghosts in not just the right spots, but in the right order.

The logic for solving the puzzle is the same regardless of which clues you have. Pay attention to the directions mentioned in their summaries.

For example, here are the clues and the solution for the riddles in one of our playthroughs:

1st place: There’s no way the others could have caught me! I left ’em in the dust!2nd place: I left downtown in a hurry, and forgot my gear. I’ll settle for second.3rd place: Worse than last year! Down to third place.

Solutions:

1st place: Middle row, left marker2nd place: Bottom row, left marker3rd place: Bottom row, middle marker

Explanations:

1st place: You start in the middle, and the only direction mentioned is left. So you stay in the center row and choose the left headstone.2nd place: We’re working on the left side again, but this time we also have to go down. So the bottom left corner is where we want to be.3rd place: The only clue we receive here is bottom, so that means we can stay in the middle and choose the center headstone on the bottom row.

Unlocking the Cursed Relic

After correctly inputting the solution, a glowing aura will funnel up from the center headstone. You will be asked if you want to take a nap, which kicks off a new boss fight.

You can only beat this challenge once. It’s not replayable. That said, diehard Cuphead fans should complete it. Once you are victorious, the Broken Relic will turn into the Cursed Relic.

Unlocking the Divine Relic

The Cursed Relic is a unique charm. Every time you stop shooting, your weapon will change into another random weapon. So this means when you dash, parry, or pause for any reason, your projectiles will change. You have to be comfortable with all weapons to use the Cursed Relic efficiently. And you also have to think about your dashes and parries more carefully. The Cursed Relic has another pesky quirk: It drops your HP to 1 at the start of each battle.

But it’s definitely worth getting used to the Cursed Relic, as you can turn it into the Divine Relic. To do this, you have to beat seven bosses on Regular or Expert difficulty with the Cursed Relic equipped. Any seven bosses. We recommend going back to Isle I to knock out some of the easier bosses first. After meeting the requirement, an achievement/trophy will pop and the Cursed Relic will be the Divine Relic.

The Divine Relic still switches your weapon when you stop shooting, but you’ll have normal HP at the start of each boss battle.

Summon Djimmi for extra health

If you’re having trouble beating seven bosses with the Cursed Relic, don’t forget that you can summon Djimmi the Great an unlimited number of times if you’ve finished the campaign. While on the overworld map, spin in tight circles for a few seconds to summon the genie. After summoning him, you’ll start each boss with one extra health point–even when using the Cursed Relic. Starting with 2HP gives you some wiggle room. Just remember that you’ll have to summon the genie again after beating a boss to get the extra health point again for your next fight.

Square Enix’s action-RPG Forspoken has been delayed. The publisher announced today that it is delaying the PlayStation 5 and PC game to January 2023. The game was previously slated for release in October.

The publisher said, “As a result of ongoing discussions with key partners, we have made the strategic decision to move the launch date of Forspoken to January 24, 2023.”

— Forspoken (@Forspoken) July 6, 2022

The company said “all game elements” are completed, and the remaining development time will be used for “final polishing.” More details on Forspoken are coming sometime this summer.

“We would like to thank you for your continued support and patience on this journey,” Square Enix said. “Your excitement for the game inspires us every day and we cannot wait to share more about Forspoken with you later this summer.”

Forspoken was originally revealed as Project Athia before getting its final title. The game follows protagonist Frey Holland (played by Ella Balinska from Charlie’s Angels), a contemporary New Yorker with a cat named Homer, who gets transported to the magical world of Athia.

Frey discovers she has magical abilities in Athia and is also able to resist The Break–a magical storm-like phenomenon the average citizen of Athia cannot survive. All she wants to do, however, is get home. You can read more details about Forspoken’s story here.

Forspoken’s cast also includes Star Wars actor Janina Gavankar, while the story was written in part by Gary Whitta, Amy Hennig, Todd Stashwick, and Allison Rymer.

According to a new study, the video game industry is predicted to experience a year-on-year decline after experiencing record growth in 2021. During the early months of the pandemic, the industry saw a period of growth that led to record profits and sales for publishers and developers.

The Ampere report suggests that the sale of games, consoles, and subscription services will dip from 2021’s combined global total of $191 billion to $188 billion this year, which will be the result of a number of factors.

One example given was the Russian market, which has seen numerous western developers withdraw from that country since it launched its invasion of Ukraine. As the tenth-biggest audience of 2021, Ampere has forecast that the country will drop to number 14 in the global rankings this year and for it to lose $1.2 billion in value compared to the previous year.

Ampere’s analysis and predictions for 2022.

Mobile, console, and PC gaming will experience varying declines that prove that video games are not immune to recessions, as a combination of supply chain issues for console parts, the closure of Asian internet cafes during the pandemic, and delays to numerous AAA titles will contribute to the 2022 decline, according to Ampere.

The good news though is that Ampere expects the industry to bounce back in 2023. “After two years of huge expansion, the games market is poised to hand back a bit of that growth in 2022 as multiple factors combine to undermine performance,” research director Piers Harding-Rolls explained.

“Even so, the year will end well ahead of pre-pandemic performance, and the outlook for the sector as a whole remains positive, with growth forecast to return in 2023,” he said.

2021 was a terrific financial year for many a game company, as Konami recorded its most profitable year ever, Capcom is predicted that the 2022-23 financial year will be its biggest yet, and Nintendo announced that lifetime Switch sales had reached 107.65 million units as of March 31.
