The official Hogwarts Legacy Twitter account has announced that Hogwarts Legacy will no longer be releasing this holiday season. Originally scheduled to hit shelves in 2021, the latest release date for the open-world RPG is now February 10, 2023. However, this is only for the PlayStation, Xbox, and PC versions of the game. For those looking to pick up the game for Nintendo Switch, it looks like your wait will be even longer.

Hogwarts Legacy will launch on February 10, 2023 for PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. The Nintendo Switch launch date will be revealed soon. The team is excited for you to play, but we need a little more time to deliver the best possible game experience. pic.twitter.com/zh0EsOvDb7

— Hogwarts Legacy (@HogwartsLegacy) August 12, 2022

Set in the wizarding world of Harry Potter, Hogwarts Legacy takes place over 100 years before the events of the popular book series. The game allows players to create their own character, choose their house, and attend classes, all while an original story involving a goblin rebellion unfolds around them. Developer Avalanche Games has confirmed the game will feature no multiplayer element or microtransactions, opting for a story-driven, single-player experience instead.

However, excitement for Hogwarts Legacy also comes with its fair share of baggage due to Harry Potter series author J.K. Rowling’s anti-transgender stance. While Rowling is reportedly “not directly involved” with the upcoming game, whether she will profit from its success has not been clarified. It is also unknown whether Rowling will write any additional stories set in the Harry Potter universe, or release any additional films. For the complete story, read GameSpot’s JK Rowling’s Anti-Transgender Stance And Hogwarts Legacy.

Hideo Kojima has marked the eighth anniversary of PT with a quick tweet, posting an image of the cover art from the secret Silent Hill game that was canceled in its prime.

Originally directed by Kojima when he was still employed at Konami, PT is a first-person horror game in which players have to navigate a haunted house. A small showcase of spooky supernatural disturbances, cryptic puzzles, and running for your life whenever you encountered a malevolent ghost named Lisa, PT was eventually revealed to be a playable teaser for a new game in the Silent Hill series, Silent Hills.

もう8年も前👻 pic.twitter.com/E63Vt1dloM

— 小島秀夫 (@Kojima_Hideo) August 12, 2022

The original plan was for Kojima and Hollywood film director Guillermo del Toro to helm the Kojima Productions project, which also featured a protagonist portrayed by Walking Dead star Norman Reedus. Kojima wanted to create a unique atmosphere in which to scare people with PT–an idea that was enhanced by famed horror manga artist Junji Ito’s contributions–and as fans discovered, the model of Lisa was cleverly tethered directly behind the protagonist once they discovered the flashlight and explained how she was able to constantly shock players.

Konami would choose to cancel development on Silent Hills, and by May 2015, the PT demo had been removed from the PlayStation Store entirely. Unlike other games which are occasionally taken off the digital PlayStation market, PT’s removal was definitive as owners of the demo couldn’t re-download it once it was gone.

Those people who did keep the demo on their PS4 became owners of a very valuable console. The game can’t be transferred from PS4 to PS5 either, as it isn’t backwards compatible with the current-gen PlayStation. Fan-attempts to remake PT in other games have also been regularly shut down by Konami

In the years since it was published and removed, PT has popped up in other games. Death Stranding, Kojima’s first game after his departure from Konami, includes an easter egg in the director’s cut edition, The Secret World spin-off The Park has a sequence inspired by PT, and the demo went on to inspire horror games such as Layers of Fear and Visage.

As for Silent Hill, the franchise remains in a mysterious state right now. There are rumors that several different games are in development for the series, including a Silent Hill 2 remake that’s being led by The Medium’s developer Bloober team and definitely not a rogue dog. For more on the state of the franchise, you can check out everything we know and want to see about new Silent Hill games.

Overwatch player Seo Sang-min, also known as Myunb0ng, found out through Twitter that he was off the New York Overwatch League team. Needless to say, this isn’t an ideal way to discover you’re suddenly out of a job.

In a now-deleted tweet, NY Excelsior bid goodbye to Myunb0ng, but Myunb0ng responded with question marks, indicating his confusion over the announcement–leading to speculation that the organization had not notified him beforehand. NY Excelsior later confirmed that this was the case and issued an apology for the way the situation played out.

The organization said it had “failed to properly communicate with the team before the announcement was made” and apologized to both Myunb0ng and fans for the oversight. It’s unknown what happened internally at NY Excelsior, but multiple people under Myunb0ng’s quote retweet expressed disbelief at the communication breakdown.

Splatoon has been one of the most surprising new franchises from Nintendo in recent years, a wild combination of shooter and zone control in a stylish multiplayer package. Splatoon made a splash on Wii U and Splatoon 2 was one of the earliest games on Switch. Now with Switch well-established and extremely successful, Splatoon 3 looks to bring back the inky magic. Here’s everything we know about Splatoon 3 so far, including the release date, multiplayer details, a free limited-time demo, and what to expect from the single-player campaign mode.

Release date

Splatoon 3 is scheduled to release on September 9, 2022. Technically this still makes it a summer release for North American audiences, as autumn officially begins a few weeks later. Its release date came as another game originally scheduled for September, Xenoblade Chronicles 3, was pushed forward to July. But players can get an early taste in late August with a free demo event.

Free multiplayer Splatfest

To prepare for launch, Nintendo is holding the first Splatfest of Splatoon 3 as a free demo event. The “Splatfest World Premiere” will be held on August 27 from 9 AM – 9 PM PT / 12 PM – 12 AM ET. TAs mentioned, this will be players’ first taste of the new tri-color Splatfest (detailed below). The question for this inaugural Splatfest will be the classic three-way competition: rock, paper, or scissors.

Gameplay details

Splatoon 3 was officially announced during the February 2021 Nintendo Direct. Nintendo closed out that presentation by showcasing the game’s reveal trailer, which gave us a look at some major changes for the series. The most obvious is the setting: Splatoon 3 takes place in an arid desert wasteland known as the Splatlands. At the heart of the desert is a new hub city called Splatsville, where players will gather between matches.

The trailer confirmed the series’ signature 4v4 Turf War mode will return in Splatoon 3, but this time, there will be new stages set in the wilds around Splatsville. Nintendo also teased there will be new moves and weapons, as well, such as a new bow and a crab-shaped autobomb. It also appears that players will now launch themselves onto the map from the air rather than spawning in at designated locations. This could have big ramifications for the late stages of matches if it lets players land in contested areas to quickly spray down their ink before the timer runs out.

Like the previous games, Splatoon 3 will feature Splatfests–large-scale social events where the community settles as poll question by choosing team colors. This time, though, the Splatfests can consist of not two but three choices. Players will fight in a 4v4 Turf War style match for the first round, and then convert to a tri-color second round. The first-place team will start in the center while the other two teams will start on opposing sides, giving the leader more of a challenge to defend their turf. The first such Splatfest will occur in late August as a free event, before the launch of the game. Check below for more details.

Nintendo has also confirmed the return of Salmon Run, this time with a video showing its “Next Wave.” This version will once again feature cooperative play as you work with teammates to take out the enemies in wave-based rounds. You’ll have to take on new large-scale bosses like Slammin Lid, a UFO that creates protective barriers, and Big Shot, a muscley salmonid that fires cannonballs. A massive king salmonid called Cohozuna shows up as the final challenge before you complete a stage, and you’ll have to take it down with a special egg cannon. Nintendo has also said a Big Run mode will have salmonids invade the city itself, as a special event that occurs every few months.

The Stringer bow, a new weapon being introduced in Splatoon 3

The story mode appears to be mystery-themed this time around. “Return of the Mammalians” sees your Inkling team up with Agent 3 and your sidekick Smallfry, where you’ll learn about the “Fuzzy Ooze,” and, hopefully, finally get some answers about just what the heck happened to turn squids into kids–and where all the humans went. Nintendo promises this will serve as the “epic finale” of the story that Splatoon has been building to over the last few games.

Finally, Splatoon 3 will add a new card-based minigame called Table Turf Battle. The 1v1 competitive mode has you place cards with geometric shapes, similar to Tetriminos, on a board. Your goal is to claim territory by placing blocks of your own color on the board, similar to the main Splatoon objective. Each player will get a starter deck, and there will be 150 cards to collect in all.

Multiplayer

Multiplayer is the foundation of the Splatoon series, and it’s once again the central focus in Splatoon 3. As we saw in the game’s reveal trailer, the series’ 4v4 Turf War mode is returning, this time with entirely new stages, moves, and weapons, including a brand-new bow that can fire ink arrows called the Stringer, and a melee weapon with a charged shot called the Splatana. It also appears some old specials are returning in Splatoon 3 after being cut from the series’ second installment. One character can be seen firing a modified Inkzooka, a special move from Splatoon 1, in the reveal trailer. Nintendo has confirmed new specials as well, like the Tacticooler that dispenses buff-providing beverages, the Wave Breaker that pulses and marks opponents, and the Reefslider that charges straight into enemies. You’ll also have a few new moves in your arsenal, like the Squid Surge to burst up walls and the Squid Roll to pop out of the ink.

On top of the standard Ranked mode, post-launch updates will add a high-ranking X Battle mode, along with league battles. Large-scale paid DLC is also planned, though Nintendo has not shared details on what it will entail.

The multiplayer will launch with 12 maps, and more are said to be coming in free post-launch updates. You can familiarize yourself by testing weapons in a Test Range, explore maps in Recon Mode, and review highlights of matches.

Character customization

Splatoon has always been about that drip, and Splatoon 3 is no exception. You can unlock new fashion options including headgear, clothing, and shoes from various vendors. That equipment comes with passive boosts to certain abilities, and you can swap out abilities using a particular NPC if you just like a certain look. Every three months for two years post-launch, the game will get a free catalog update with new customization options.

Aside from your personal style, you can also customize your locker with accessories and your favorite fashions, which will serve as the way you view recent opponents and friends. Mailboxes littered throughout the city will let you submit drawings, and you can snap selfies of your Squid Kid with a photo mode.

Do I need Nintendo Switch Online to play Splatoon 3?

Like Splatoon 2, you’ll need to have a Nintendo Switch Online subscription in order to play Splatoon 3 online. Individual memberships cost $4 for one month, $8 for three months, and $20 for one year, while an annual family plan runs for $35 and covers up to eight Nintendo Accounts across multiple systems. Nintendo has also recently added a Switch Online “Expansion Pass” tier, which includes some bonuses like the Genesis and N64 classic catalogs, along with an included expansion for Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Nintendo has not outlined whether it will be regularly adding game DLC as a Switch Online Expansion Pass perk, but if so, we may see some bonuses included for Splatoon 3. It has already added Splatoon 2’s story DLC as a bonus.

New Amiibo

Three new Amiibo figures are coming along with Splatoon 3. Those will include a blue Octoling, a yellow Inkling, and a Smallfry, each for $16. Those are coming after the game launches, sometime this holiday. They all have the same basic functionality, though, as they can save your gear loadouts, unlock special gear, and store your in-game photos.

Preorder details

Splatoon 3 is up for preorder at Best Buy, Amazon, GameStop, Target, Walmart, and the Nintendo eshop. Thus far, there haven’t been any preorder bonuses announced, though this could certainly change closer to its release date. In addition, a special Splatoon 3 Switch is coming on August 26–just in time for the special Splatfest event. That special Switch includes a special ink-splattered paint job on the dock and Joy-Con controllers.

Video games are the ultimate fantasy, letting you become someone you could never be in the real world. This means a super-powerful hero or an athlete some of the time, but it can also mean a genocidal maniac who is exempt from the law. Video games have let us do some truly evil things over the years, and some of them are unforgivable. These are the evil things we’ve all done in video games.

Super Mario 64 – Throw Penguin Off Mountain

Don’t even lie. Don’t act like you’re better than the rest of us. At some point, everyone who has played Super Mario 64 has found the lost baby penguin and, instead of taking the penguin back to its mother like you’re supposed to, has chucked it off the side of the snowy mountain to its doom. Why did we do this? To hear the sound a penguin makes when it explodes? To prove to the Mushroom Kingdom that we were in control? Or was it just to feel that rush that can only be experienced by taking another life? Perhaps it was all of these things.

Super Mario World – Letting Yoshi Fall To His Death

It’s easy to forget that “Yoshi” isn’t really a sole character, but rather a group of adorable dinosaur creatures. To Mario, however, they’re disposable. If you need proof, consider what we all did in Super Mario World: leapt off Yoshi’s back in order to make a difficult jump, sacrificing him in the process. There were other Yoshis who would help us, unaware of what we had done to their fallen brothers–like a deer innocently staring down the barrel of a hunting rifle moments before its demise. Mario certainly didn’t mind, maintaining his same cheery demeanor as he closed in on Bowser. But in the process, Mario–and we–became the villain.

Skyrim – Murder Everyone

The appeal of an open-world RPG is that you can effectively do anything–making the character in the game as close to yourself as you wish. We’re not sure what it says about humanity that so many of us have used that freedom for evil. Sure, you can pickpocket and steal in The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, but you can also be a homicidal monster who destroys everyone in their path. If you’re evil, you’ll feel little remorse for killing a whole bunch of random people, regardless of who they are or what they did, using a new weapon or spell. Of course, doing so can make the game more difficult, depending on who you antagonize, but being evil isn’t always easy!

Halo – Shoot The Funny Marines

The marines you team up with in the Halo games, especially the first few games, were very helpful with clearing out Covenant squads and manning the guns on top of various vehicles. It’s tragic, of course, that we still have to shoot them in the face. But shoot them we must, as Master Chief works best when he’s alone. Really, though, the Halo marines are mostly fun to slaughter because they say funny things in response. Comedian David Cross even voiced one, offering little quips each time he was shot. And unlike some of the evil acts in video games, this one comes with consequences, as the marines will eventually turn on the Chief and send him on the Great Journey ahead of time.

GTA V – Run Over Innocent People

Several different Grand Theft Auto games could be on this list, of course, but none give you a larger world in which to spread evil than Grand Theft Auto V. The most successful entertainment product of all time is also a breeding ground for pure evil. Get in any vehicle and just start driving on the sidewalk to murder dozens, if not hundreds, of random people. They had families. They had hopes and dreams. And now, they have their blood spilling all over the streets of Los Santos. Like in Halo, there is a consequence for indiscriminate killing, as the police will hunt you down with everything from cruisers to helicopters, but it’s really not that difficult to escape and go on another killing spree.

Watch Dogs 2 – Not Petting The Dogs

We have a little confession to make on this particular entry: We don’t actually qualify for it. We aren’t truly evil enough to avoid petting the dogs in Watch Dogs 2. In fact, we would pet every single dog we could find, arguably extending the game’s total runtime by three or four times what it should have been. But there are some truly heinous, sadistic people out there who choose to ignore the dogs, despite their heads being so perfectly cuddly and soft. They ignore them, despite their faces being the cutest thing you’ve ever seen. We can live with accidentally shooting someone while completing a mission, but we’d lose sleep over not petting a dog.

Tamagotchi – Letting It Starve

There is a fine line between negligence and evil, and the Tamagotchi helped us all step over it at one point or another. As part of the virtual pet trend of the ’90s and early 2000s, this little handheld device found its way into many pockets. Taking care of a pet seems like a fun activity to do at first, but then you realize that it’s almost impossible to keep the thing alive and still maintain any sort of life outside of it. So, after promising to be nice to the creature for a whole two hours, we all eventually took a nap. And in that time, this little pathetic digital baby managed to starve to death. It was going to happen sooner or later.

Crusader Kings 3 – Ordering The Assassination Of A Child

Look… the kid was in our way

Crusader Kings 3 is essentially the most elaborate choose-your-own-adventure story you could imagine, letting you rule a nation and grow it into a vast empire while micromanaging everything from taxation and defenses to your own family’s marriages. But alongside the above-board stuff, you can also be an outright monster. Take, for example, your power to order assassinations of foreign leaders–even if they’re literal infants. Doing so creates a “secret” that can later be exposed and put your political career in jeopardy, but there’s also a good chance you can simply have a baby murdered and get away with it.

The Sims – Removing The Ladder From The Pool While Someone Is Swimming

The Sims gives you almost total control over the lives of your virtual characters, and this includes the ability to kill them in creative ways. One of the classic techniques we’ve pretty much all done is the “disappearing ladder.” After one of your sims goes into the pool for a relaxing swim, you enter the editor and remove the pool’s ladder. This makes them unable to ever leave, resulting in them eventually dying–perhaps after pooping their pants. Sure, it’s a dastardly thing to do, but it’s also extremely satisfying if you really hated how that person was treating everyone else in the house.

Zelda – Attacking The Chickens

Play Zelda for even an hour or two and you’ll know you are not supposed to attack the chickens. Unlike most of the other evil deeds on our list, this one actually comes with dire consequences. Sure, you can slash your sword out at the chickens roaming in the Zelda games’ peaceful towns, but do it too much and you’ll face the wrath of a massive poultry swarm. It’s unclear exactly why Nintendo decided this was the evil deed that could not go unpunished, but that punishment is universal. In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, you can actually trick enemies into hitting the chickens, using your unwitting new allies as a personal murder squad.

Super Smash Bros – Edgehogging

An evil practice that is nonetheless widely used by professional players, edgehogging in Super Smash Bros. (especially in Melee) isn’t in the spirit of Nintendo’s world-colliding fighter. After knocking an enemy off the edge of a stage, players discovered they could grab onto the ledge and prevent an opponent from doing the same when they attempted to recover. This was eventually removed from the series, forcing players to actually jump and attack enemies trying to recover. Still, with Melee remaining a popular choice for competitive players, it’s something they pretty much all have to deal with.

GoldenEye 64 – Playing As Oddjob

Back in the ’90s, no one really cared that much if there was a massively unbalanced character in a multiplayer game. After all, it wasn’t like you had to worry about someone exploiting it in an online match. However, the fact remains that playing as Oddjob in GoldenEye on Nintendo 64 was downright despicable. Because the character was so short and the N64 controller didn’t allow for quick aim adjustment, whoever played as Oddjob could easily kill their enemies. If you won as Oddjob, you’d ruin everyone’s day and couldn’t even really claim the glory for yourself. It’s not just us saying that, either, but the game’s own designers.

Giving Your Guest The Cheap Controller

Is it evil, or is it simply an established rule? Most video game systems released after the early ’90s only came with one controller by default, and especially for younger players, the idea of paying $50 or $60 for another one seemed daunting. There were–and are–plenty of third-party alternatives available for far less money, however, and many of these cheap controllers became the go-to for a guest. Back before the Mad Catz brand was revived as a high-quality accessory line, it was synonymous with “bad wired controllers,” and these are what those guests would be given before a round of Madden or Halo. They never stood a chance, with those squeaky plastic triggers and buttons acting like nails on a chalkboard as they lost to a player with a genuine first-party controller.

Screen-Looking

Where are you looking? At my screen?!

A capital gaming offense (and by that we mean it deserves a light punch to the arm), screen-looking has been a cardinal sin for as long as split-screen games have existed. Whether it be a sports game, a shooter, or even a racing game, looking at your opponent’s screen gives you an unfair advantage that can lead to cheap kills and abrupt quitting. Some have even taken drastic measures to eliminate it, such as putting up curtains in LAN party rooms or taping cardboard dividers on the TV itself. Online gaming has certainly helped reduce screen-looking’s impact, but it’s something none of us have truly forgotten.

RollerCoaster Tycoon – Capturing Your Guests And Charging For The Bathroom

RollerCoaster Tycoon 2

RollerCoaster Tycoon allows you to do lots of evil things, such as drowning guests you don’t like or purposely designing a deathtrap ride so an entire middle school’s student body explodes in a fiery wreck. But even those aren’t the worst things you can do in the game. No, we’re talking about building a fence with no doors around a group of guests, placing a bathroom in the middle of it, and charging them several dollars every time they want to use it. What choice do they have? If a gorilla happens to get loose while they’re waiting in line to poop, it just makes it more exciting. Yes, this is an amusement park, but the amusement is not for the guests.

Ganking Beginners In MMOs

World of Warcraft

If you’ve ever wanted to make someone quit playing a game they just started, you’re a jerk, and you’ve probably done this. MMO games are typically split into distinct zones, with the “starter” areas containing low-level quests so players can get used to the game mechanics and story. If you’re a monster, you’ll take a high-level character into these areas and trick the newcomers into fighting you. In a game like World of Warcraft, players from one faction who sneak into the enemy faction’s city need to get attacked before they’re able to attack other players, but it’s not that hard to make this happen. What follows is often a complete slaughter of an entire city, and what have you gained from it?
