A new game under the EA Originals label has just been announced, which will be developed in partnership with the team behind Dynasty Warriors–publisher Koei Tecmo and studio Omega Force. The as-yet untitled project is a AAA hunting game that will be set in a fantasy version of feudal Japan.

The upcoming game, which will introduce an original IP, seems set to try and compete with Capcom’s Monster Hunter series, with its focus on hunting action and fantasy feudal Japanese setting. In a press release, Koei Tecmo said it would be a “new type of hunting game,” with “unexpected and innovative mechanics.” More details on the new title will be revealed later this month.

Studio Omega Force is most well-known for its Dynasty Warriors and Samurai Warriors games, as well as other titles in the musou genre such as Hyrule Warriors and Fire Emblem Warriors. The studio has also branched into more hunting-style games, notably including two Attack on Titan games that tasked players with taking down the titular giant humanoid titans.

EA’s Originals program was first announced in 2016, and since then has put out a number of notable titles such as Unravel, A Way Out, and last year’s Game Awards GOTY It Takes Two.

— PlayStation (@PlayStation) September 12, 2022

PlayStation has not provided further clarification beyond that in regards to the showcase, so it might be worth tempering your expectations. We could see a new trailer for God of War Ragnarök, given its quickly approaching release date, or perhaps Forspoken, given that game is a PlayStation 5 console exclusive and is scheduled for January 2023. Or we might not see either one.

This new State of Play kicks off at 3 PM PT / 6 PM ET. That means you’ll have plenty of time for your emotions to recover from tomorrow’s Nintendo Direct–which begins at 7 AM PT / 10 AM ET–regardless of whether its the exuberant joy that The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess HD is coming to Switch or the crushing disappointment that it isn’t.

Former Rockstar creative lead Dan Houser has joined the advisory board of blockchain games developer Revolving Games.

According to VGC, Houser participated in a $13.2 million fundraising round for the company. Afterwards, he joined Revolving Games’ advisory board. The company consists of two studios with around 100 employees in total, which are currently working on two titles. The first is an officially- licensed Battlestar Galactica MMO, while the second is a co-op adventure RPG inspired by Nintendo classics called Skybourne Legacy. The company has raised over $20 million for the development of web3 integrated games.

Dan Houser is best known for his work with Rockstar Games, which he co-founded. During his time at Rockstar, Houser co-wrote and co-led development on multiple titles, including GTAV and Red Dead Redemption 2, until his departure in February 2020. He since founded a company called Absurd Ventures in Games, though what exactly the company will do or what projects it will create is still unknown.

Despite the controversy surrounding blockchain and its environmental effects, Dan Houser is far from the first prominent developer to invest in the tech. Square Enix has continued to push support for the tech, even using money from selling off its western studios to invest in blockchain. Former Nintendo of America president has also expressed interest in blockchain’s potential.

Ubisoft is increasing the price of its major AAA games to $70, starting with November’s Skull and Bones release. According to an Axios report, Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot confirmed that big releases for current-gen consoles (Xbox Series X|S and PS5), like other recent AAA releases, will be priced higher.

“Some of the games will come at the same price as the competition. The big AAA games will come at $70,” Guillemot said to Axios. This comes as no surprise, as $70 seems to be pretty much the new normal for major new titles. Releases like Call of Duty: Black Ops sold for $70 at launch, as well as NBA 2K21.

Note that Guillemot emphasized that only some, and not all, Ubisoft games will have a $70 price tag. Assassin’s Creed Mirage, releasing in 2023, will only require you to fork over $50.

Ubisoft’s been in the news recently, with not one, but four new Assassin’s Creed games on the roadmap. Project Red and Hexe are two of the larger upcoming Assasin’s Creed games. Red takes place in Japan, and Hexe appears to take place during the Holy Roman Empire. The other two Assasin’s Creed games, Project Jade and an untitled one, are mobile titles. Project Jade is set in China and not much is known about the other mobile game.

At Ubisoft Forward, a new Skull and Bones trailer was released. It’s a game that’s been in development for awhile, and players get to be swashbuckling pirates during a golden age of piracy. Skull and Bones releases on November 8 for Xbox, PlayStation, PC, and Stadia.

It looks like Naughty Dog put a reference to the popular NBC comedy The Office in its recently released remake of The Last of Us. TikTok user rxelei discovered this, explaining that they were taking cover when they looked around and noticed that the room looked very similar to Dunder Mifflin’s office in Scranton.

It’s not a perfect recreation of the iconic office space, but it looks pretty close. Watch the video below, discovered by IGN, and you’ll see Pam’s desk, Jim’s desk, Michael’s office, and other famous spots from the office, like the couch near the entrance.

The room also even appears to include a reference to Kevin’s infamous chili incident, with the floor stained to appear as if the hot food was spilled all over the floor like it was on the show.

The Last of Us Part 1 was released earlier this month for PlayStation 5. It is an updated and improved version of the 2013 PS3 game, made new again for Sony’s latest console.

In essence, this is the same Last of Us you may remember, but with a fresh update. The game doesn’t include multiplayer, however, in case that is important to you.

GameSpot’s The Last Of Us Part 1 review scored it an 8/10. Reviewer Jake Dekker wrote that the updates that Naughty Dog delivers make “one of the most memorable games of the PS3 era even better.”

The Last of Us Part 1 is coming to PC at a later date. Additionally, Naughty Dog is making a standalone Last of Us multiplayer game, while a Last of Us TV series is coming to HBO in 2023.

NBA 2K23 is here, which means it’s time to discuss the league’s best centers. Ewing or Olajuwon? Shaq or Mourning? Jokic or Embiid? This year’s list of NBA fives has more depth than you’d think and with Christian Wood aiming to be an All-Star with the Mavericks, we wanted to find out the answers for ourselves. 2K23 ratings are out in the wild and if you’re curious about who is on the outside looking in, here’s what you need to know about the 10 Best Centers in NBA 2K23.

For more on NBA 2K23, check out our MyNBA Eras preview and the 2K23 ratings hub.

NBA 2K23: Top 10 Centers

Below is Visual Concepts’ in-game list of the best fives in NBA 2K23:

Joel Embiid – 96 OVRNikola Jokic – 96 OVRAnthony Davis – 90 OVRKarl Anthony-Towns – 89 OVRRudy Gobert – 88 OVRBam Adebayo – 87 OVRDomantas Sabonis – 86 OVRPascal Siakam – 86 OVRDeandre Ayton – 85 OVRJarrett Allen – 85 OVR

Does “The Process” deserve a higher rating? Philadelphia’s Joel Embiid turned a four-year, $196 million extension with the Sixers into 30.6 points per game last season, becoming the first center to claim an NBA scoring title since Shaquille O’Neal (1999-2000). Denver’s Nikola Jokic is still the league’s two-time MVP (2021, 2022) thanks to an absurd stat line of 27.1 points, 13.8 rebounds, 7.9 assists, and 1.5 steals while the Lakers’ Anthony Davis hopes to stay healthy (and relevant) despite injury bugs, persistent trade rumors, and not being named a reserve for February’s All-Star Game.

Utah’s Rudy Gobert is headed up north, Miami’s Bam Adebayo is becoming an offensive threat, Toronto’s Pascal Siakam gets buckets at will, and Cleveland’s Jarrett Allen is an on-court pest (16.1 points, 10.8 rebounds) that also raises awareness with Basketball Without Borders. Phoenix’s Deandre Ayton and Sacramento’s Domantas Sabonis are due for breakout seasons, but don’t sleep on Minnesota’s Karl Anthony-Towns; the 26-year-old big man won the 2022 NBA Three Point Contest and exited the season as just the fifth center in NBA history to record a 60 point-game.

Honorable Mentions

Washington’s Kristaps Porzingis (85) is next up with Boston’s Robert Williams III (85), Atlanta’s Clint Capela (84), Dallas’ Christian Wood (84), and New Orleans’ Jonas Valaciunas (83). Other bigs include Nikola Vucevic (83), Jusuf Nurkic (82), and New York’s Mitchell Robinson (81).

Hori has revealed the Split Pad Compact, a new handheld-only Switch controller that connects to the sides of the console just like the Joy-Con. The name “Split Pad” might sound familiar already. Hori initially cornered the alternative Joy-Con market in 2019 with the Split Pad Pro, a superb controller that beefed up the ergonomics, added conventional handles, and larger buttons and triggers. It has remained our pick for the best handheld Switch controller ever since. Suffice to say, we’re looking forward to the Split Pad Compact, a sleeker, redesigned option that will likely appeal to those who think the Split Pad Pro is too big.

Officially licensed by Nintendo, the Split Pad compact will be available at Walmart, Best Buy, and Target in October. The controller costs $50 and comes in two color schemes: Apricot Red and a dual-color design that is light gray on the front and yellow on the back.

As the name suggests, the main difference between the Split Pad Pro and its younger brother is size. The Split Pad Compact drops the beefy handles in favor of a design that doesn’t look all that different from the Joy-Con controllers–at least when looking at the two attachments head on. The Split Pad Compact is still wider than the Joy-Con, though. The backside of each of the attachments has a curved design intended to offer improved ergonomics. The shape is fairly similar to the compact grips featured on our best Nintendo Switch grips roundup.

Like the Pro version, the Compact has larger buttons and triggers as well as full-length analog sticks. Another major bonus with the Compact over the regular Joy-Con is that it has a real D-pad, which is far more ideal for retro games and side-scrollers than using separated directional buttons. It also has a pair of remappable rear triggers, home/screenshot buttons, and turbo functionality.

Keep in mind that the Split Pad Compact is a handheld-only controller. It’s not powered by anything but the console itself, so you can’t use the controller wirelessly when playing on TV or in tabletop mode. Earlier this year, Hori released a Split Pad Pro that comes with an attachment so you can use it as a wired controller when gaming with the Switch docked. Hori hasn’t announced plans to give the Split Pad Compact the same treatment. It’s also worth noting that the Split Pad Compact doesn’t have rumble, gyro, or NFC support for Amiibo.

Nonetheless, the Split Pad Compact is an exciting new Switch controller. If it’s as high-performing as the Split Pad Pro, Switch owners will have another intriguing controller to choose from. Look for our Split Pad Compact review in the coming weeks to see if it lives up to the Split Pad name.
