NBA 2K23 is finally out, and every basketball fan across the world can experience the next chapter in this storied franchise. While there are a plethora of new and returning features to the virtual basketball title, many fans have one question on their mind: who’s the best and worst team in the game? Every year, there’s always a debate over the team ratings assigned to each NBA squad. By nature, these ratings will be controversial due to every fan base believing their team should be higher than another. In this guide, we’ll go over each team’s OVR rating at the launch of NBA 2K23, and fans can see for themselves if their team got snubbed or if they’re right where they should be. Here are the best teams in NBA 2K23.

1. Milwaukee Bucks – 96 OVR

There’s actually a tie at the top of the list, but we decided to give the edge to the team that had a better record during the 2021-2022 season. That means the Milwaukee Bucks are the highest-rated team in NBA 2K23. When you have the highest-rated player on your roster, Giannis Antetokounmpo, your overall team is also bound to be among the league’s best. The Milwaukee Bucks had a strong chance to make a Finals run last season, but lost All-Star Khris Middleton to injury during the second round. This season, they’ve kept their roster largely intact, bringing back playmakers such as Jrue Holiday, Bobby Portis, and Brook Lopez. The Bucks shouldn’t budge from the top spot for a while.

2. Los Angeles Clippers – 96 OVR

The LA Clippers had a lost season in 2021, as they didn’t have their full troupe of superstars available for the majority of the year. However, they look as dangerous as anyone in the NBA with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George fully returning from injury. The Clippers also made a splash signing in the offseason, bringing in John Wall to man the point guard spot. In addition to these stars, LA has solid depth both in the starting roster and on the bench. Nicolas Batum, Luke Kennard, Robert Covington, and Norman Powell are just a few of the players that this roster boasts. If the Clippers can stay healthy, they’ll compete for the championship spot out of the west.

3. Golden State Warriors – 95 OVR

Once again, we had a tie at the third spot, but the Golden State Warriors break all ties, at least for this season. The defending Finals champions are looking to repeat in 2022, and they have a terrific shot to do so. In addition to bringing back their entire starting roster from their Finals run, Golden State brought in some great depth players. Donte DiVincenzo will provide backcourt depth while James Wiseman is returning from injury and could massively bolster the Warriors’ frontcourt. Jonathan Kuminga is also a name to watch at the power forward position; he could have a big impact for Golden State behind Draymond Green. For most players, though, the rest of the roster pales in comparison to the Splash Bros, or Triplets with Jordan Poole. If you go up against a player using the Warriors and they know how to shoot in 2K23, you’re in trouble.

4. Memphis Grizzlies – 95 OVR

If not for an injury to superstar Ja Morant, who knows what the ceiling for the Memphis Grizzlies could have been in 2021? As long as Morant is on the roster, the Grizzlies will be a title contender in the west. Memphis didn’t do much in the offseason, but they did trade for sharpshooter Danny Green. The Grizzlies’ backcourt is certainly their strength, but their frontcourt could be dominant as well. The pair of Steven Adams and Jaren Jackson Jr. did wonders for Memphis last season, and they’ll look to man the paint again this season. Ja Morant simply needs to stay healthy this season, and it wouldn’t if guys like Dillon Brooks took a leap forward as well. Regardless, though, the Grizzlies should be one of the most electric NBA 2K23 teams based on their skill players alone.

5. Los Angeles Lakers – 95 OVR

If there was one team to completely retool their roster in the offseason, it was the LA Lakers. After a year in which they didn’t make the playoffs with an aging lineup, the Lakers did what they do best: sign players. LeBron James and Anthony Davis, of course, lead the way on the roster, and they’ll need to stay healthy at all costs for LA to have any chance this season. The backcourt for the Lakers remains somewhat the same, as Russell Westbrook returns. Westbrook is now paired with Patrick Beverley, though, and that could go great, or it could go terribly. Lonnie Walker IV was also an underrated pickup for the Lakers to round out their backcourt. However, if LeBron is on the Lakers, they’ll be an enjoyable team in NBA 2K23.

6. Boston Celtics – 94 OVR

The defending Eastern Conference champs come in at number six on the list of top teams in NBA 2K23. Overall, the Celtics look pretty much the same as they did a year ago. They traded away some depth pieces to acquire Malcolm Brogdon, though. Brogdon presents a solid scoring option on the bench or as a starter if players don’t see Marcus Smart as the best point guard on the roster. Danilo Gallinari was also an addition that makes Boston a much better shooting team in 2K23. While they might not have as much talent as other NBA teams, the “Jays” duo of Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum will always keep the Celtics in contention.

7. Miami Heat – 93 OVR

The Miami Heat were one win away from the Finals, and now they find themselves at the number seven spot on the NBA 2K23 ratings. Luckily for Miami fans, the team didn’t lose much in the offseason. P.J. Tucker is now a 76er and Donovan Mitchell didn’t end up in South Beach, but the Heat still have a great all-around roster. Jimmy Butler leads the team with Tyler Herro and Bam Adebayo backing him up in the backcourt and frontcourt, respectively. Duncan Robinson is a terrific shooter to bring in off the bench, as is Max Strus. Finally, Victor Oladipo is Miami’s x-factor; if he can return to form, this team becomes a much more dangerous threat in the east. However, for now, the team’s 2K23 rating is reflective of Oladipo’s current status.

8. Philadelphia 76ers – 92 OVR

The Philadelphia 76ers boast one of the strongest duos in the entire NBA. James Harden and Joel Embiid remain two of the NBA’s elite and will continue to fluster teams all season long. Around them, the 76ers have assembled some solid pieces to reach the Finals that has eluded them for years. Tobias Harris is a strong forward, P.J. Tucker was a terrific veteran signing, and Tyrese Maxey will hopefully take a leap forward this season. In recent days, Philly also signed veteran center Montrezl Harrell, who could start alongside Embiid depending on how players want to construct their roster. This Sixers team is set up for success, but the question is can they finally capitalize on it?

9. Denver Nuggets – 92 OVR

Another season, another failed Finals run for the Denver Nuggets. However, the team was without star guard Jamal Murray for most of the season, so his return will be big for Denver. Of course, the roster is led by perennial MVP candidate Nikola Jokic, who remains one of the best players in 2K23. Around Jokic, the Nuggets have Aaron Gordon and DeAndre Jordan, both of whom should help out in the rebounding department. To help Murray in the backcourt, Denver has Michael Porter Jr. and Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. On paper, there are much stronger teams than the Nuggets. However, with some cohesion, the roster could work quite well together.

10. Cleveland Cavaliers – 91 OVR

We can guarantee that the Cavaliers were not rated this high a week ago. However, the times are always changing in the NBA, and the Cavs made a huge move to trade for star guard Donovan Mitchell. With a Mitchell, Darius Garland, and Caris LeVert backcourt, Cleveland has legitimate title aspirations. Pair that with a frontcourt of Kevin Love, Evan Mobley, and Jarrett Allen, and the Cavs look difficult to stop on either side of the ball. This team could be one of the best offensive teams in 2K23 if anything.

Below: Check out the best of the rest, or at least… the rest.

NBA 2K23 Best teams: 11-30

Here are the remaining teams and where they fall in the 2K23 ratings. Was there anyone snubbed from the top 10?

11. Phoenix Suns – 90 OVR

13. Chicago Bulls – 90 OVR

14. Brooklyn Nets – 90 OVR

15. Atlanta Hawks – 90 OVR

17. Toronto Raptors – 89 OVR

18. Minnesota Timberwolves – 88 OVR

19. Portland Trail Blazers – 88 OVR

Fans aren’t happy about the revelation that new characters will have to be unlocked through the season pass in Overwatch 2, as the sequel moves to a free-to-play model. While Blizzard has said that characters will only be available through the free rewards track, not requiring any extra payment, players have said that the system will jeopardize Overwatch’s hero-swapping playstyle.

Overwatch 2 arrives soon on October 4, and will completely replace the original game on release. The game is adopting a free-to-play model, and like many other games will rely on a season pass as one of its main forms of monetization. New characters will be added to this system on the free rewards track, meaning players will have to earn them through play.

Fans have taken to social media to voice their concerns about this system, pointing out that it doesn’t play nice with Overwatch’s hero-swapping gameplay, where players are meant to be able to change to any character depending on how the match is going.

Players have even unearthed interviews from the release of the original Overwatch that prove their point, with Reddit user u/sentient-sloth posting an excerpt from an Ars Technica interview with developer Aaron Keller.

Now the game director for Overwatch 2, Keller explained that the original game was released on a pay-once-play-forever because “it’s so important to have access to every hero in the game, and in the middle of the match to swap to any other hero they think is necessary.” He added, “Sometimes you need a different hero on your team. Like if you really need a Widowmaker right now, you don’t want everybody saying ‘I don’t have Widowmaker!'”

Some users have urged others to boycott the game, with some requesting refunds for pre-ordered content like the Watchpoint Pack. With unlockable heroes already a part of the free track and not directly involved in Blizzard’s monetization for Overwatch 2, it will be interesting to see whether the studio will choose to walk this decision back in the face of fan backlash.

Overwatch 2 will launch on October 4 for PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch, and will fully replace the old version of the game.

Season of Plunder continues in Destiny 2 with another visit from Xur and a new slate of Exotics and legendary weapons and armor for your collection. It’s a great time to grab fresh Exotics to help you compete in the season’s first Iron Banner, which runs through the weekend.

Xur arrives in the Solar System with the daily reset on Friday, so we’ll update this article when he lands.

Xur is present every weekend in Destiny 2, starting with the daily reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET on Friday (until Daylight Saving brings that forward by an hour in November). Bungie doesn’t mark Xur’s location on the in-game map, so it can be easy to miss him if you’re not aware he exists. But he only comes to specific locations, of which now there are only three: the Tower Hangar area, on Nessus in Watcher’s Grave, and in the Winding Cove area of the EDZ.

Alongside changes in his location, Xur’s inventory also rotates weekly. That means it’s worth visiting him each time to check out his new weapons and rolls on Exotic and Legendary armor. You can visit him any time between his arrival Friday and the weekly reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET the following Tuesday when Xur departs the Solar System.

Keep an eye out on a Pokemon Go Gym near you for the limited-time reappearance of Deoxys in five-star raid battles. This Mythical Pokemon returns in all its forms as Pokémon Go’s new season, the Season of Light, kicks off and the annual Psychic Spectacular event comes back. Deoxys is appearing in all of its formes–Normal, Attack, Defense, and Speed–at once, so there’s plenty of time to find the one or ones you need.

Deoxys Raid Schedule

Deoxys will appear as the sole five-star raid boss starting 10 AM local time on September 1 and will remain in five-star raids until the same time on September 13. Although it doesn’t have to share the spotlight with another Legendary or Mythical Pokemon, all four formes of Deoxys will be appearing. Raids do not generally follow a set schedule, and there’s no way to tell in advance which Deoxys forme a five-star raid egg will hatch into, but you will be notified by the game if there’s a raid starting nearby.

Your best chance to find a Deoxys raid will be during Raid Hour on September 7. Every Wednesday from 6 PM to 7 PM local time, the majority of Gyms host five-star raids for Trainers to challenge. All four formes of Deoxys will be fighting each other for the spotlight, but there should be enough raids happening during this time to find the formes you need the most.

Deoxys Normal forme shiny comparison

How to Catch Shiny Deoxys

Normal Forme Deoxys has had its shiny variant released since 2020, and the other three formes all had their shines released earlier this year, so you have a chance of encountering any of the four formes in their shiny variant from raids this time. Remember that a shiny is never guaranteed, and you won’t know if a raid will result in a shiny Deoxys until after you’ve defeated it and entered the catch screen. The best way to ensure you catch a shiny Deoxys is to complete as many five-star raids as possible before September 13. Also, since Mythical Pokemon like Deoxys can’t be traded, you’ll have to get the shiny yourself instead of hoping one of your friends catches an extra one.

Deoxys Speed forme shiny comparison

Deoxys Weaknesses and Counters

Deoxys is a pure Psychic-type Pokemon in all of its formes. Psychic types take super effective damage from Dark, Ghost, and Bug-type attacks. Some recommended Pokemon from each type include:

Dark: Mega Gyarados, Darkrai, Tyranitar, Hydreigon, and YveltalGhost: Mega Gengar, Giratina (Origin Forme), Chandelure, Gengar, and Hoopa (Confined)Bug: Mega Beedrill, Genesect, Scizor, Pinsir, and Scyther

Remember that using a Mega Evolved Pokemon will boost the damage of all Pokemon in the raid by 10%, and the damage of all Pokemon using attacks that share a type with the Mega Evolved Pokémon by 30%. Coordinate those Megas with your raid group for added damage, which might be even more important against Defense forme. As its name suggests, this forme has very high Defense, so it can take a lot of hits and usually requires a larger group to complete.

Shadow Pokemon also deal 20% more damage than their non-shadow counterparts, so the shadow versions of any of the suggested Pokemon that have them can help you win.

Deoxys Attack forme shiny comparison

Types to Avoid

Deoxys’ Psychic-type signature attack Psycho Boost will deal super-effective damage to Fighting, and Poison-type Pokemon. This means Deoxys can hit back hard against some of its counters, like Gengar, because of its secondary Poison typing. Also keep in mind that Deoxys’ Psychic typing means that it resists Fighting and Psychic-type attacks. Stay away from these types of Pokemon.

Deoxys Defense forme shiny comparison

Usefulness

Should you raid Deoxys beyond entering it in your Pokedex and, if you’re lucky, getting the shiny versions of its various formes? Only the Defense forme is worth continuing to raid. Defense forme Deoxys has been a staple of the Great League for a long time, and since it can’t be traded, anyone who doesn’t have one for Great League already should definitely get one (and the Candy to power it up and unlock its second move) while they have the chance. Defense forme Deoxys also has some play in Ultra League, but that does require maxing it out to level 50 (or close to it) with Candy XL. Some players might find that worth it, but it’s certainly quite the grind to do so.

Deoxys’ other formes don’t have a whole lot of use. Normal and Speed formes don’t have outstanding stats or moves to be able to do much in either raids or PvP. At first glace, you would expect Attack forme to be useful for raids since it has one of the highest Attack stats in the game, but it has a lackluster moveset and its virtually non-existent bulk means it can’t stick around long enough to deal meaningful damage. These three are likely just dex entries and shiny goals for most players.

Ahead of the launch of AMD’s latest Ryzen 7000 processors, which will hit retail shelves on September 27th, MSI unveiled pricing on four of its X670/X670E motherboards. Given the world’s current financial climate and features such as PCIe 5.0 connectivity to M.2 storage drives and at least one PCIe x16 slot, the writing has been on the wall for a while regarding pricing.

Currently listed in their US store, MSI has two premium (MEG), one mid-range (MPG), and one entry-level regular X670 (Pro) model, with prices ranging from $290 (Pro X670-P WIFI) up to $1300 (MEG X670E Godlike).

MSI MPG X670E Carbon WIFI ($480) ATX motherboard

As we’ve seen with previous generations on both Intel and AMD platforms, MSI’s flagship for Ryzen 7000 is the MEG X670E Godlike ($1300). MSI is advertising a 24+2+1 power delivery, with up to six M.2 slots, 10 GbE, 2.5 GbE, Wi-Fi 6E, and a touchscreen 4.5″ M-Vision dashboard panel.

Sitting just behind the Godlike is the MSI MEG X670E Ace ($700), with support for up to six M.2 drives, an advertised 22+2+1 power delivery, and 10 GbE/Wi-Fi 6E networking to sweeten the deal. Both models benefit from PCIe 5.0 PEG slots and one PCIe 5.0 x4 M.2 slot for the latest PCIe Gen 5 SSDs due sometime in November.

X670E Mid-Range Model for $480, X670 Entry-Level at $290

The MPG X670E Carbon ($480) represents MSI’s mid-range MPG offerings with advertised 18+2+1-phase power delivery, an 8-layer PCB, and Wi-Fi 6E connectivity. Despite costing nearly $500, MSI offers a 2.5 GbE NIC considering this has been offering this on entry-level models for the last couple of generations. Importantly, however, this is the cheapest MSI X670E motherboard – meaning it’s the cheapest board MSI will be offering at launch with PCIe 5.0 slots.

Coincidentally, we just reviewed MSI’s MPG Z690 Carbon WIFI, which is MSI’s equivalent motherboard for the Intel LGA1700/Z690 market. That board has an MSRP of $400 and a current selling price of $350 on Amazon. So there is a significant premium right now for the AM5 board, on top of what’s already a relatively high price for a mid-range Intel motherboard.

Finally, the entry-level MSI Pro X670-P WIFI (non-E) model has 2.5 GbE, an advertised 14+2+1-phase power delivery, and supports up to four M.2 slots. Despite dropping PCIe 5.0 in favor of PCIe 4.0, the MSRP is sitting at $290, which is very surreal pricing for an entry-level model.

Despite not agreeing with MSI’s current X670E/X670 MSRP pricing, things could change over the coming weeks and months as more vendors announce its offerings to the market. The introduction of B650/B650E boards should also offer a cheaper alternative, though those boards won’t be arriving for at least another month. As it stands, the MSI MEG X670E Godlike will cost $1300, the MEG X670E Ace will cost $700, the MPG X670E Carbon WIFI has a price tag of $480, and the Pro X670-P WIFI will cost $290.

All four models are expected to launch on September 27th, along with AMD’s Ryzen 7000 series processors.

Nintendo consoles have always been home to some of the best platformers on the market, and that holds true with the Switch. Some of the best entries in multiple Nintendo platforming franchises are on Switch, including Super Mario Odyssey and Kirby and the Forgotten Land. But the Switch is also home to a bunch of wonderful third-party platformers. If you’re a platformer fan, you have a ridiculous number of good games to choose. We’ve rounded up the best platforming games on Nintendo Switch in 2022.

There’s also a deep catalog of retro platformers available through Switch Online, including Super Mario Bros. 3, Super Mario World, Donkey Kong Country, and more. For this list, we’ve limited entries to those that launched specifically on Switch (otherwise, we’d have a list half-filled with twenty-year-old games). Whether you’re looking for a challenge or something lighthearted, one of these titles is bound to be a good fit. This list contains a wide variety of platformers, including precision-platformers focused entirely on jumping, action-platformers with tough combat, puzzle-platformers with clever problems to solve, metroidvanias with labyrinthine maps, and even platformers with a roguelike structure.

For more Nintendo Switch game recommendations, check out these roundups, too!

Best Switch gamesBest Switch RPGsBest Switch co-op gamesBest Switch games for kids

Our list of the 27 best Switch platformers is organized in alphabetical order. We’ll continue to add to this list as more great platformers land on Nintendo Switch.

Celeste

Its gorgeous pixel graphics might be the reason you dive into Celeste, but its emotional narrative and memorable characters will keep you around until the credits roll. Throw in some challenging platforming action and dozens of unlockable challenges, and it’s easy to see why Celeste is such an iconic indie game. Even after you scale the mountain, there’s plenty left to do. And for those who want to experience the story without too much stress, Celeste has wonderful difficulty sliders to tailor the experience to your skill level.

Dead Cells

Dead Cells isn’t easy. As you navigate its 2D corridors and explore a mysterious island, you’ll come across no shortage of deadly foes that can quickly send you to an early grave. Death results in the loss of most of your progress–although you’ll be able to hold onto a few key skills that make each subsequent run a bit less daunting. Though it may be more of an action game than a pure platformer, Dead Cells’ fast-paced combat and movement rely on platforming skills.

Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze

This is the first of several Nintendo exclusive games you’ll find on this list. And while newer releases like Super Mario Odyssey and Kirby and the Forgotten Land might garner more attention, this delightful 2D platformer remains one of the best on Switch. You’ll play as Donkey Kong, Diddy Kong, Dixie Kong, and more as you fight to save the realm from invaders. Each character has their own set of skills that alter how you approach the challenging platforming sequences. Tropical Freeze originally appeared on Wii U, but the Switch gave it new life and a wider audience.

Guacamelee 2

Guacamelee 2 has more than an awesome name. It also boasts some of the most stylish graphics in the Switch catalog, along with frantic gameplay that is bound to get your adrenaline flowing. Beyond nimble platforming, you’ll be able to unlock a bunch of powerful moves to help wrestle your way past opponents, dive into four-player co-op, and listen to a catchy Electro-Mexican soundtrack. Structured like a metroidvania, Guacamelee 2 has a sprawling world filled with great platforming sequences and interesting characters.

Hollow Knight

Hollow Knight is one of the metroidvanias in recent memory. You’ll explore a haunting, insect-inspired world that’s filled with secrets around every corner. New skills are unlocked regularly, which help you both defeat challenging bosses and access previously restricted areas. Combat is fluid and fast-paced, although it’s not for the faint of heart. Combat and platforming meld perfectly together here and keep you invested throughout its lengthy runtime. Seriously, Hollow Knight’s world is staggeringly big.

Inside

This haunting, narrative-driven puzzle-platformer follows a young boy as he explores a terrifying and mysterious world. You’ll be forced to solve a variety of mind-bending puzzles, although it’s the well-written storyline that really drives the action. Most of the platforming challenges make you think, as you have to solve puzzles in order to make progress due to the protagonist’s minimalistic abilities.

Kaze and the Wild Masks

Inspired by platformers from another era–namely Donkey Kong Country–Kaze and the Wild Masks offers a classic side-scrolling experience. You’ll run and jump across more than 30 levels, using unique Wild Mask abilities to defeat foes and save your friend from an evil curse. Kaze and the Wild Masks is very much a Donkey Kong Country clone, but it’s an extremely good one.

Kirby and the Forgotten Land

Kirby’s jump to three dimensions was a runaway success. You’ll explore a sprawling world, making generous use of Kirby’s Copy ability to steal enemy skills and complete each mission. With upgradeable Copy abilities and the brand-new (and hilarious) Mouthful mode, there’s more platforming variety here than ever before. You’ll also find Kirby’s charming sense of humor throughout the game, along with eye-catching graphics that make each new area a joy to experience.

The Messenger

Retro graphics and a dynamic combat system are the highlights of The Messenger. The story follows a young ninja as they battle against a demonic army to save their village, although things quickly become more complicated. Upgradeable and unlockable skills help even the odds, but you’ll need to rely on fast reflexes if you want to make it to the game’s end. Fans of old-school platformers from the NES era will find lots to love in The Messenger.

Metroid Dread

Metroid Dread is one of the newest releases on this list, and it’s also one of the best. Follow Samus as she once again fights off an alien threat–along with deadly robots known as E.M.M.I. Your skillset is more developed than ever before, with Samus able to clamber over or slide under just about any obstacle. Late-game bosses will test your fortitude and skills, but it’s always a balanced experience that feels fair. And if you want to see and collect everything in the game, you’ll need to master Samus’ suite of abilities to solve intricate platforming puzzles.

N++

As far as platformers are concerned, you’d be hard-pressed to find one with more content than N++. With more than 4,000 (no, that’s not a typo) levels, the fluid platforming game should keep you busy for quite some time. If you get bored of all those levels, there’s also an editor that lets you make your own, along with the option for three other players to join you in both competitive and cooperative modes.

New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe

Its name is a bit of a mouthful, but New Super Mario Bros. U Deluxe is among the best 2D Mario experiences on Switch. Vibrant graphics, more than 100 levels, multiple game modes, and cooperative multiplayer make it easy to sink hundreds of hours into the game. This version also includes the New Super Luigi U titles, which give you some challenging content to play through if the standard game becomes a bit too easy.

Ori series

The original Ori and the Blind Forest introduced players to a mystical land filled with adorable (and deadly) creatures and gave them an emotional story that stayed with them long after putting the game down. Ori and the Will of the Wisps continued that tradition, this time giving you more puzzles, more enemies, and more eye-catching environments to explore. You can purchase a physical edition that contains both Ori games. We highly recommend playing The Blind Forest first before diving into the more complex Will of the Wisps.

Owlboy

Owlboy sends you on a quirky journey that follows Otus–a young owlboy that’s struggling in his young owlhood. When Sky Pirates invade his world, life becomes even more challenging. Platformers don’t get much more bizarre than this, but fans of gorgeous pixelated graphics and retro vibes will find a lot to love about Owlboy.

Rayman Legends

Colorful, humorous, and a blast to play, Rayman Legends is another stellar 2D outing for the iconic hero. The oil painting-inspired visuals mesh with its unique narrative, which has Rayman and crew diving into magical paintings as they discover secrets and slay a bunch of gigantic beasts. The game’s even more fun when playing with a few friends, as Rayman Legends supports co-op for up to four players.

Shantae and the Seven Sirens

$18 (was $30)

Shantae has had a few adventures on Switch, but we’re highlighting the Seven Sirens here (we’d recommend all of them, though). This time around, Shantae can make use of Fusion Magic–which allows her to change forms and learn new abilities. Beyond the new mechanic, you’ll find the usual assortment of cartoony graphics, fun characters, and well-designed levels.

Spelunky

Dive into a procedurally generated world in which no two runs are ever alike. Its graphics and presentation might be simplistic, but hiding underneath you’ll find a challenging platformer with a ridiculous amount of depth. Once you wrap up Spelunky, be sure to check out Spelunky 2–which offers more platforming goodness.

SteamWorld Dig 2

Running and jumping are just as important as mining in SteamWorld Dig 2. This unique Metroidvania has you digging deep underground to discover why earthquakes keep destroying a local trading town. The further down you go, the more challenging the game becomes, with new monsters and hazards making themselves known. Your trusty Hookshot makes it a breeze to navigate your labyrinth of tunnels, and upgradeable skills give you a reason to keep on mining. Though SteamWorld Dig 2 is better than its predecessor, the original is still worth playing.

Shovel Knight

Shovel Knight draws heavy inspiration from retro, 8-bit platformers. Instead of having a sword, gun, or whip to vanquish foes, however, you’re given a trusty shovel. Gameplay is just as challenging as the platformers that it’s based on, although modern luxuries such as sleek animations, improved sound design, and a staggering amount of content make it a nostalgic trip worth taking–multiple times, in fact. Shovel Knight: Treasure Trove includes four single-player campaigns, each of which stars a different character and drastically alters the platforming gameplay. It also has a local multiplayer mode called Showdown that’s fun to play alongside fellow Shovel Knight fans.

Super Mario 3D World + Bowser’s Fury

This bundle is essentially two games in one. First, work your way through an excellent collection of 3D platforming levels solo or with a few friends in Super Mario 3D World. You’ll have a bunch of power-ups at your disposal to help overcome the odds, including the Super Bell–which gives you catlike powers and the ability to climb walls. Then, hop over to Bowser’s Fury, which offers a free-roaming world for you to explore and the option for a second player to join in the chaos as Bowser Jr. Together, this package offers incredible value, as both games are truly stellar.

Super Mario Maker 2

Super Mario Maker 2 might be the most elaborate Mario game to date. The game comes with 100 prebuilt levels for you to work through, but the game really shines when you jump online to try out one of the thousands of player-made masterpieces. There’s practically an endless amount of enjoyable content to keep you playing for quite some time. You can also try your hand at its powerful editor, which lets you build and share your own side-scrolling levels with players around the world. You can create the Super Mario platformer you’ve always dreamed about.

Super Mario Odyssey

When you think of great platformers on Switch (or one of the best games, in general), many will think of Super Mario Odyssey–and for good reason. The game does just about everything right, from its fluid platforming mechanics and the constant introduction of new gameplay mechanics to its impressive graphics and awesome cast of characters. Cappy adds a fun twist to the action too, giving Mario a set of skills not seen in his other outings. A second player can take control of Cappy in co-op mode, which is a particularly nice inclusion for those who want to introduce their kids to Super Mario.

Super Meat Boy

Super Meat Boy remains the king of precision-platformers. Each level will likely take you dozens of attempts before finding success, and the game is kind enough to replay all your failed runs when you finally reach the goal line. Super Meat Boy has perfect controls, so even though it’s a tough test, it never feels unfair. It’s more than decade old at this point, but Super Meat Boy still feels as great to play today as it did in 2010. Those who enjoy the loop can try their hand at even harder levels once the main story wraps.

VVVVVV

Gravity is your friend in VVVVVV. There’s no jump button in this minimalistic game, although the ability to manipulate gravity helps you slingshot to incredible heights. The action takes place across six open-world locations, with 20 collectibles up for grabs throughout the adventure. Checkpoints are littered throughout the map as well, which makes it easy to explore without the need to backtrack.

Will You Snail?

Don’t be fooled–this snail is anything but slow. Will You Snail? is a quirky platformer that offers a neon-soaked atmosphere and fast-paced action. It’s all built around a fiendishly smart AI, which predicts your movements and tries to kill you. Seriously. It’s a challenging game that also happens to be one of the most inventive platformers you can play on Switch.

Yoku’s Island Express

Yoku’s Island Express is a charming game that follows the eponymous Yoku, the island’s new mail carrier. It has a rather novel gameplay structure, as the large world is littered with natural pinball boards that you have to navigate with flippers and springs. It’s one of the most unique metroidvanias to release in recent years.

Yoshi’s Crafted World

Yoshi’s Crafted World oozes charm. From its hand-crafted art style to its enchanting soundtrack, it’s hard to play this game without a smile on your face. Backing up the charm is some fun and family-friendly 2D platforming action that supports local co-op for you and a friend. And if you really need to relax, you can turn on Mellow Mode to make the game even easier. Wonderful level design, cool boss battles, and classic Yoshi platforming come together to create one of the best games starring the beloved dinosaurs.
