This year Razer will be bringing us its first ever 18-inch gaming laptop, or desktop replacement to be more accurate, packing one of Intel’s 13th Gen Core i9 HX-series chips, along with Nvidia’s RTX 4090 mobile GPU (opens in new tab). Razer has also announced that the new Razer Blade 16 will be packed into a much smaller chassis than anticipated. A little bit of min-maxing going on with these next-gen gaming laptops, then, and from what I’ve seen it’s an impressive feat at both ends of the spectrum.

Razer’s first installation to their 2023 gaming laptop lineup comes in the form of the Blade 16. Not only has Razer has managed to jam a 16-inch panel into a chassis that’s only a smidge bigger than the current Blade 15—alongside a 13th Gen Intel Core i9 HX-series CPU and Nvidia RTX 40-series mobile GPU—it also announced the Blade 16 will come with the “world’s first dual mode Mini LED display.”

In a joint venture with Honda, Sony unveiled this prototype car during its press conference at CES 2023, which will hit the road in 2026. The Afeela is a tricked-out electric vehicle that seems to be an upgrade from the Vision-S concept car (opens in new tab) Sony showed off a few years back.

The Afeela has got everything you’d expect from a prototype car made by Sony and Honda. Sleek design, a load of sensors and safety features, and even a big fancy dashboard with screens to watch movies and play PlayStation 5 games on the go.

Guardian Shields are one of Fortnite’s new seasonal items that you can find while running around the castle-filled areas of the map. While not quite as fun as slamming someone with a Shockwave Hammer or spearing them with the Ex-Caliber Rifle, it’s still pretty powerful in its own right.

The Guardian Shield lets you raise a forcefield in front of yourself while moving, or you can whack it down on the ground to create a big protective barrier—pretty handy if you’ve got someone shooting at you and nowhere to go. There’s also a weekly quest that’s all about blocking shots with it, so if you want that XP you’ll have to use one sooner or later. Here’s where to get a Fortnite Guardian Shield and how it works.

Where to find Guardian Shields

An Oathbound Chest (Image credit: Epic)

The best way to get a Guardian Shield is from one of the new Oathbound Chests. These big white treasure chests are easy to spot, and you can find them inside or nearby the castle-like buildings in the yellow areas of the map. Guardian Shields aren’t guaranteed chest loot, so your best bet is to head to an area where lots of them spawn such as The Citadel, Breakwater Bay, or Shattered Slabs. Fortnite.gg (opens in new tab) has a full list of potential spawn locations for Oathbound Chests on its interactive map. I found that The Citadel was really good for finding them, since there are plenty of buildings with potential Oathbound Chests nearby.

How to use a Guardian Shield

Once you’ve got your hands on a Guardian Shield, you can start using it to block shots. Left mouse click lets you hold up the shield while moving, and right mouse click lets you aim and throw the shield down to create a static barricade.

One of the most awesome developments in chipmaking in recent years has to be chiplets and stacking said chiplets on top of one another. The possibilities, as they say, are endless. AMD showed how gaming frame rates can be bolstered by stacking more cache onto a processor with the Ryzen 7000X3D CPUs (opens in new tab) at CES 2023, but it also had something equally as impressive for the data centre folks.

AMD is using its 3D chip-stacking tech to combine a CPU and GPU onto one absolutely mammoth chip: the AMD Instinct MI300.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 has delivered its fair share of amusing glitches so far, as well as the hacked-in flying boats which was probably my favourite bug of 2022 (opens in new tab), and the latest may be the most show-stopping yet. Helicopters are a prominent part of the game as it stands, and probably the premiere way to zip around Al Mazrah, but now players are running into a bug that will, mid-flight, cause the vehicle to spontaneously explode.

The exploding chopper bug can be seen in the below video from *checks notes* latenitelover. It doesn’t appear to be too widespread in the game, but it’s also not clear what happened in the clip in question: the explosion is so instantaneous as to suggest the player flew into an invisible wall.

We’ve already reported on AMD’s new 16-core mobile monster, the Ryzen 7045 Series (opens in new tab). But it’s arguably AMD’s new laptop APU that’s more interesting. May we introduce the AMD Ryzen 7040 Series, otherwise known as the Phoenix APU, and decked out with AMD’s brand new and very intriguing “XDNA” AI engine.

AMD’s naming conventions for the new Ryzen 7000 Series mobile chips as a whole may be a bit confusing, but bear with it because there’s some exciting technology in this particular variant. The Ryzen 7040 Series is a more direct replacement for the old AMD Ryzen 6000 mobile chip, being a monolithic APU designed expressly for mobile where the Ryzen 7045 16-core monster is more of a repackaged desktop chip.

Accessible controllers have got to be some of the coolest innovations coming to the gaming world, whether fully integrated award-winning systems like Microsoft’s Xbox Adaptive controllers (opens in new tab) or DIY efforts that are getting 3D-printed parts (opens in new tab) to gamers who need them. Gaming for everyone is an initiative that’s gaining strength, and it’s exciting to see another big player like Sony join the ranks.

The electronics giant just announced its own accessible controller setup, (opens in new tab) Project Leonardo. This newly developed interface is only listed as coming for PS5, which makes sense as that’s where most of Sony’s gaming interest lies.
