In the company’s This Week at Bungie (opens in new tab) or TWAB update, the Destiny developer clarified the series of events that led to a number of players missing in-game titles (opens in new tab), a bug that required a rollback of player progress and 20 hours of downtime for the popular looter shooter/MMO/Guardian-em-up game (credit to Massively Overpowered (opens in new tab) for the spot).
On January 24, a number of Destiny players logged in to find the unthinkable had happened: their triumphs were gone! All those achievements, precious ‘cheevos, lost to time, like tears in rain. All jokes aside, this is a major bummer in a game where some triumphs and seals require absolutely herculean trials to earn, while others are tied to legacy content and can no longer be acquired.
The bug ultimately required a rollback of player accounts to their state on the morning of January 24, with players losing any progress they’d made in the three-hour window after Destiny’s regular weekly refresh. Not the end of the world then, losing a couple hours of progress made on a Tuesday morning, but shout out to that one person on Reddit (opens in new tab) who secured the coveted exotic combat bow Hierarchy of Needs within the perdition window.
“We discovered that the issue was caused when some currently incompletable EDZ and Nessus Triumphs were moved from Forsaken into the archived Triumphs section,” Bungie explained in the TWAB. “To make that change, we used a tool that can move player state from one location to another in the player’s account. This tool is very powerful but requires careful and cautious handling.”
That forbidden and powerful dev tool was apparently still configured for when Bungie was seriously rejiggering the game for 2020’s Beyond Light expansion. The team accidentally brought forward pre-Beyond Light data, which conflicted with and overwrote progress players had made since that time.
It’s a reminder of how fragile the backends for huge, popular games can be sometimes, and it’s interesting to me that this ties back to Beyond Light specifically. That expansion seriously reworked Destiny 2, with big changes to its engine and content. Hopefully Destiny is just getting the giggles out of its system ahead of its big Lightfall expansion, which releases February 28.

Staring at four yellows is always an odd experience because when you’re in that tricky situation, the answer could be either one guess or a hundred away. By some blind luck, my follow-up to today’s awkwardness turned a few of them into just the right sort of greens, and after that, all I had to do was add the successful finishing touch.

Learn more about Wordle
Every day Wordle presents you with six rows of five boxes, and it’s up to you to work out which secret five-letter word is hiding inside them.
You’ll want to start with a strong word (opens in new tab) like ALERT—something containing multiple vowels, common consonants, and no repeat letters. Hit Enter and the boxes will show you which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.
You’ll want your second go to compliment the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer.
After that it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the right word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words (so no filling the boxes with EEEEE to see if there’s an E). Don’t forget letters can repeat too (ex: BOOKS).
If you need any further advice feel free to check out our Wordle tips (opens in new tab), and if you’d like to find out which words have already been used you can scroll to the relevant section above.
Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle (opens in new tab), as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle (opens in new tab), refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures (opens in new tab). Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.

Reaching Rank 10 in the Persona 3 Mitsuru Social Link is the only way to start a romance with Mitsuru and unlock the ultimate Empress Persona, Alilat–if you’re playing the male route. Like with Fuuka and Yukari in Persona 3, the female protagonist only becomes very good friends with them.
This guide explains how to start the Mitsuru Social Link and the best choices to pick for each protagonist. We’ve only included the conversations where a dialogue choice matters. For any that we didn’t include, you can pick any dialogue option and get the same result.

How to start the Mitsuru Social Link
Mitsuru is only available after November 21, and you need max academics (genius level) to start the relationship, regardless of which protagonist you chose. You can raise your academics by studying at night or in the school library, but raising academics to the max level takes more than twice as long as it does to max out charm. If you don’t want to neglect your other Social links, you may have to save this relationship for New Game+, where your stats carry over.
Once you do start Mitsuru’s Social Link, you have very limited time to finish it. December 31 is the cutoff date for making a significant choice that determines what ending you get. If you go for the true ending, you’ll have some extra time in January to work on finishing the Social Link.
You can find her during the day on Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday at Gekkoukan High near the office.
An easier Social Link that you can start much earlier in the RPG involves the old couple at the bookstore. Head to the mall to start the Hierophant Social Link.
How to romance Mitsuru
If you’re playing as the male protagonist, you automatically start a romantic relationship with Mitsuru by progressing her Social Link. There’s no specific moment where you confess your passion or decide to remain friends. That’s true for your relationships with Aigis, Fuuka, and Yukari as well. If you want to do their Social Links, you don’t have a choice in the romance department–but you also don’t get penalized for having multiple girlfriends.
The female protagonist can’t romance Mitsuru.

As with Persona 3’s other Social Links, make sure to bring a Persona of the matching Arcana to get an extra relationship boost for every correct answer. That’s the Empress Arcana for Mitsuru. Most Empress Personas start at a higher level, so to save money, it’s probably best to keep one on hand rather than summoning from the compendium when you need one. Leanan Sidhe and Yaksini are the ones you’ll likely encounter or be able to fuse first.

How to start the Fuuka Social Link
Fuuka is available after June 15, but you must have reached courage level 2 (ordinary) to start the Social Link. This applies to both protagonists.
Reaching level 2 courage requires 30 points, so you should be able to reach that by the time mid-June rolls around without sacrificing your other stats as well. Head to Wild-Duck Burger on Thursdays to get +3 courage and Club Mandragora in the evenings for +2 courage
After you do begin Fuuka’s Social Link, you can find her during the day on Monday, Friday, and Saturday on the second floor at Gekkoukan High. If you’re playing as the female protagonist, Fuuka is available on Thursday instead of Friday.

How to romance Fuuka
If you’re playing as the male protagonist, you start a romantic relationship with Fuuka just by leveling up her Social Link. Unlike later Persona games, there’s no diverging path where you confess undying love or decide just to be friends. That’s true for your relationships with Aigis, Mitsuru, and Yukari as well. If you want to do their Social Links, you don’t have a choice in the romance department–but you also don’t get penalized for having multiple girlfriends.

How to start the Yukari Social Link
Yukari is available from April 28 on, but you might have to wait depending on which hero you’re playing as. The female protagonist can start the Social Link immediately, but the male protagonist needs rank six (max) charm. If you visit the cafe every day and attend photo club, you may be able to max out the charm stat by the end of summer, but just bear in mind this likely means excluding other stats and social pursuits as a result.
After you do begin Yukari’s Social Link, you can find her during the day on Monday, Wednesday, and Saturday in your classroom at Gekkoukan High.
If you’re looking for an easier Social Link to start with, pay a visit to the bookstore and kick off the Hierophant Social Link.
How to romance Yukari
If you’re playing as the male protagonist, you start a romantic relationship with Yukari just by leveling up her Social Link. Unlike later Persona games, there’s no “big moment” where you profess your feelings. The two of you just grow closer. That’s true for your relationships with Aigis, Mitsuru, and Fuuka as well, and even though you don’t have a choice in the matter, you also don’t get penalized for having multiple girlfriends.

Marvel Snap’s newest season pass, Savage Land, brings us a new card: Zabu. Zabu is a 3-Cost card with 2-Power and has a powerful Ongoing effect that reduces the cost of 4-Cost cards in hand by 2.
This essentially allows, on turn six for example, to play up to three 4-Cost cards with Zabu on the board due to their reduced cost from its continuous effect. This Ongoing effect can also be multiplied with Onslaught, Mystique, or Onslaught’s Citadel location. The only downside of this reduction is the 4-Cost cards are capped to costing at least one energy. They will never reach 0-Cost territory through Zabu’s usage specifically.
Season Pass cards are always especially powerful, since they, like Zabu, can only be unlocked for the time being by purchasing the roughly $15 Premium Pass. This guide will cover a few of the best Zabu-based decks, and even if you are not the type of player to purchase Marvel Snap’s season passes, these decks will still be worth checking out in the future when you do obtain the inevitable Zabu due to the game’s card rollout system.
Negating Negatives
Negating Negatives is all about playing powerful cards that do have major deterrents such as allowing your opponent to draw cards, decrease your board’s power, or destroy your own cards, but negating these downsides to only have the upsides.
Maximus, Typhoid Mary, Red Skull, and Attuma are powerful cards for their costs, but they provide major downsides. By using Zero’s On Reveal effect that removes the abilities of the next card you play, we can keep those cards such as Typhoid Mary or Attuma on the field without their effects activating. Zero will also negate Red Skull’s effect that grants each card on your opponent’s field at the same location +2 Power each.
Armor is a great counter to decks that run Shang-Chi since we have many cards such as Typhoid Mary, Attuma, Red Skull, and She-Hulk that are susceptible or can be destroyed through Shang-Chi’s On Reveal effect to destroying cards with 9-Power or more.
Negating Negatives Deck List
Zabu will reduce the cost of Typhoid Mary, Shuri, and Attuma for this deck. Each of these will become 2-Cost cards instead. One tactic on turn four is to use Shuri’s effect which will double the power of the next card played. Then on that same turn four, play the Attuma that is powered up through Shuri’s effect on the location you have Armor on. You will have a 20-Power Attuma that will not be destroyed since it shares a location with Armor. After turn five, play Taskmaster right after Attuma, and since Taskmaster copies the power of the last card you played, Taskmaster will now be a 20-Power card, as well. Turn five, and you already have two 20-Power cards on your board with one of them protecting from destruction effects through Armor.
Cosmo is able to negate On Reveal effects from activating, so playing Maximus on Cosmo’s location will not allow your opponent to draw two extra cards, while you have a 3-Cost 7-Power without any downside. Cosmo is also a perfect counter to decks opponents use that rely on On Reveal effects such as Wong, Iron Heart, and Odin.
Make sure you do not accidentally use Shuri on your Cosmo location or that when you play Attuma or Typhoid Mary, play Zero beforehand or play Attuma at a location with Armor present.
We circumvent all of the negative aspects of these formidable cards by creating scenarios with zero downsides for us.
Faithful Flipper
Faithful Flipper hinges on the usage of Mister Negative. Mister Negative flips the cost and power of all cards in the deck. Many cards such as Bishop, Mystique, Ironheart, Rogue, Jubilee, and Wong are more potent with their high costs switched with their low power.
Silver Surfer, Mystique, and Ironheart all become 0-Cost cards through Mister Negative, while each has 3-Power due to the swap.
There are a few different routes for this deck. Ideally, you want to play Psylocke on turn two, then on turn three, you will have four energy, so you can play Mister Negative. Mister Negative swaps the cost of all cards in your deck. Wong will become a 2-Cost with 4-Power and you can play Jubilee and/or Ironheart on top of Wong’s location to trigger both of their On Reveal effects twice due to Wong’s double On Reveal effect.
Sera can be swapped out for White Tiger instead, then playing White Tiger on Wong’s location will create two 7-Power Tigers at other locations. If White Tiger’s stats have been swapped due to Mister Negative, White Tiger will be a devastating 1-Cost card with 5-Power.
Faithful Flipper Deck List
The 4-Cost cards in this deck that are reduced by Zabu are Jubilee, Wong, and Mister Negative. If you manage to play Zabu on turn three, then on turn four you can play both Mister Negative alongside Jubilee to synergize. Have all of the cards cost/power swapped, then Jubilee will grab one of those swapped cards from your deck.
Other cards you can substitute are Bast, Patriot, and Iron Man by swapping out Psylocke, Rogue, and Sera. By including Patriot, you can boost the Broodlings from Brood, since they have no abilities. Brood, Patriot and the broodlings will all also be powered up through Silver Surfer’s On Reveal due to them being all 3-Cost cards/units.
Having a 0-Cost Iron Man with 5-Power due to Mister Negative can make your location soar. Even just having Iron Man solo at a location, would already be a 10-Power location with ease.
This deck can take many different paths due to the combination of Zabu with Mister Negative. A proficient, ferocious, downright deadly duo that complements each other super well that can aid you in climbing the Ranked Ladder.
Ruthless Rocks
Ruthless Rocks’ ace card is Darkhawk. Darkhawk’s effect is that it gains +2 power for each card in the opponent’s deck. By combining Korg and Rock Slide, they will stuff the opponent’s deck with extra cards–in this case, Rocks, which are 1-Cost cards with 0-Power. Essentially pretty useless, if your deck is not using Patriot to power them up.
The 4-Cost cards in this deck that are reduced by Zabu are Shuri, Moongirl, Darkhawk, Spider-Man, Rock Slide, Wong, and Absorbing Man. Plentiful 4-Cost cards will be reduced by Zabu. Adding in Mystique, then those 4-Cost cards will be reduced even further.
Ruthless Rocks Deck List
For example, on turn four with Zabu already on the field, we can place Wong and then play Rockslide on top of Wong’s location. That will throw four Rocks into the opponent’s deck. Korg placed on Wong’s location will throw in two more Rocks. The opponent will have added six Rocks in their deck just from Korg and Rock Slide, which would have Darkhawk at 13-Power without counting the non-Rock cards. Using Shuri before playing Darkhawk, we can get to more than 20-Power on Darkhawk.
Absorbing Man copies the last card you played, if it had an On Reveal effect. Spider-Man prevents your opponent from playing cards next turn at the same location it is played. Using Absorbing Man after playing Spider-Man will allow you to create two locations the opponent cannot play cards the next turn. Forcing your opponent to lose two locations either early on or late in the game due to Zabu reducing both Absorbing Man and Spider-Man’s card costs.
Since we already have so many 4-Cost cards already, America Chavez will always be drawn on turn six. America Chavez is a strong powerhouse, but more importantly–having America Chavez in the deck allows us more opportunities to draw into Zabu and our 4-Cost cards.
Hopefully, these deck lists and strategies have given you more insight into Zabu’s abilities alongside how to make its effect work in tandem with other cards such as Mystique, Mister Negative, Darkhawk, and Shuri.

In a blog post published Friday (opens in new tab), Wizards of the Coast announced that it is fully putting the kibosh on the proposed Open Gaming License (OGL) 1.2 that threw the tabletop RPG community into disarray at the beginning of this month.
Instead, Wizards will leave the previously enshrined OGL 1.0 in place, while also putting the latest D&D Systems Reference Document (SRD 5.1) under a Creative Commons License (thanks to GamesRadar for the spot).
The OGL controversy timeline in brief
The original OGL was put in place with the third edition of D&D in 2000, and allowed other companies and creators to base their work off D&D and the d20 system without payment to or oversight from Wizards.
A draft of a revised OGL 1.1 leaked early in January (opens in new tab), which proposed royalty payments and creative control by Wizards over derivative works. This immediately incited a backlash from fans.
Wizards backpedaled (opens in new tab), introducing a softer OGL 1.2 that would still replace the original, and opened the community survey cited in today’s announcement.
With 15,000 respondents in, the results of the survey were pretty damning. 88% didn’t “want to publish TTRPG content under OGL 1.2,” while 89% were “dissatisfied with deauthorizing OGL 1.0a.” 62% were happy that Wizards would put prior SRD versions under Creative Commons, with most of the dissenters wanting more Creative Commons-protected content.
In response, Wizards of the Coast caved. It’s leaving the OGL 1.0 in place, and will add the up-to-date SRD 5.1 to the list of prior D&D materials under Creative Commons, permanently allowing its free distribution and use.
“We don’t control that license and cannot alter or revoke it,” D&D executive producer Kyle Brink wrote in the blog post above. “Placing the SRD under a Creative Commons is a one-way door. There’s no going back.”
Wizards of the Coast has closed the OGL 1.2 survey, and while this marks a decisive victory for the community, there remain lingering questions and not a little bit of ill will towards Wizards for its initial push to change the OGL. PC Gamer Senior Editor Robin Valentine wonders if the OGL was even worth fighting for (opens in new tab) in the first place, arguing that this could be an opportunity for a fresh start in tabletop roleplay. “An entire hobby is shackled to a game full of rules and assumptions still deeply bound to decisions made 50 years ago,” Robin wrote. “Some of them simply clunky, others increasingly problematic. Is that a situation worth fighting to protect?”
There also remains the question of Paizo (opens in new tab) and its recently-announced Open RPG Creative License (ORC)—this “system-agnostic” rival license had support from over 1,500 TTRPG publishers (opens in new tab) as of last week, a mighty head of steam that Wizards may have been too slow to counteract. The OGL is here to stay, but have those smaller publishers and independent creators left for good?

Dead Space (opens in new tab) is a disturbing game. One of its most iconic moments is the discovery early on of the helpful hint, “Cut off their limbs (opens in new tab),” scrawled on the wall in blood. It’s a famously violent, frightening gore fest from start to finish. But if you’re not into that sort of thing, a new filter in the Dead Space remake will give you the option to blur out the worst of it.
“Motive recognized that some players may choose to avoid seeing certain types of content typical in horror and gore games,” EA’s program lead for game accessibility Morgan Baker said in an update on Dead Space accessibility features (opens in new tab). “So the team wanted to explore potential ways to allow players to control how they view the game’s more graphic content.”
This is accomplished through a pair of options in Dead Space: One that displays a “non-intrusive popup” message describing potentially disturbing content that’s about to appear, and another that covers up the visuals of the scene entirely: “You’ll still hear any audio, but a blurring effect will hide the visuals until the scene has played out,” Baker said.
It might seem like an odd feature to include in a game like Dead Space, which is all about being as disturbing as possible, but it’s really no different than adding a story mode to a game so people who want the narrative experience without the mechanical headaches can enjoy it too. (And, for the record, the Dead Space remake has a story mode option.) And we’re not talking about run-of-the-mill blood and gore here. Some players who enjoy stomping necromorphs into goo, for instance, might react badly to depictions of suicide. Others might want to just take a break from jump scares now and then.
This is what the content warning option looks like:

And this is the “hide disturbing scenes” option—notice how the doorway into the next room is greyed out:

Regardless of your reason, if you want to make use of the content filters you’ll have to go into the accessibility menu to switch them on, because they’ll be disabled by default. Exactly what content they’ll tackle also isn’t known, although lead senior experience designer Christian Cimon said it won’t include “violence done to necromorphs.”
“We’re mostly focusing on scenes involving intense violence against humans, strong psychological horror, or self-harm,” Cimon said. “And of course, there’s a lot of subjectivity that comes into play when trying to evaluate what’s disturbing.”
The Dead Space remake launched today, and it is very good: We gave it an excellent 84% in our review (opens in new tab), calling it “a new standard for the future of the survival horror series.”

A lot of Overwatch 2 players aren’t happy with the sequel’s new ranked mode, and Blizzard is starting to agree. In a new blog post (opens in new tab) meant to address recent player complaints, Overwatch 2 game director Aaron Keller said improvements to Competitive mode, including “more clarity” around what ranks mean, are coming over the next several months.
We will be implementing some changes in S3 and quite a few more in S4 all aimed at creating more clarity in the system.
Aaron Keller, game director
Confusion over how exactly Overwatch 2’s ranking tiers (opens in new tab) (skill divisions that range from Bronze to Platinum and peak at “Top 500”) factor into matchmaking has been driving players up the wall since season one. Some have reported a frustrating level of perceived inconsistency (opens in new tab) in the skill level of teammates and opponents, metrics that are especially difficult to track because Overwatch 2 actually hides a player’s “true” MMR. Your displayed skill division, as it turns out, is a completely separate figure from the invisible MMR number that Overwatch 2 actually uses to match you with similarly-skilled players.
The result is the not-so-uncommon occurrence of matching up against players who appear to be a much higher or lower rank than you. In theory these players do actually have a similar, invisible MMR level as you, but it sounds like even Blizzard agrees this is a needlessly obtuse way to do things.
“The new Ranked mode suffered from poor comprehension,” Keller wrote. Citing the experience of facing players with a display rank that doesn’t match their true skill, Keller said this has created a “negative impression of the matchmaker” even when it’s technically doing its job.
“We will be implementing some changes in S3 and quite a few more in S4 all aimed at creating more clarity in the system. More details on short-term changes and long-term vision will be coming soon.”
(Image credit: Jared Neuss on Twitter)
What form these changes will take could vary, but it’s probably wise to think small. Earlier this month, Overwatch 2 executive producer Jared Neuss clarified in a tweet reply (opens in new tab) that there are no plans to revert to Overwatch 1’s ranking system, which used a numerical skill rating system as well as medal ranks. “The new system has good goals but the implementation needs work and has to be adapted based on player feedback, like yours.”
In the short term, an “improvement” could be something as simple as a better in-game information page breaking down the difference between rank and MMR. If you ask me, it sounds like much bigger adjustments are in order.
Any public-facing skill tier should always represent at least roughly where you land in the true MMR equation, with some wiggle room to allow for more frequent movement through ranks and to throw off those trying to game the system. Otherwise, what’s the point of having a rank? The fact that, right now, a Diamond Overwatch 2 player on paper might actually be at the skill level of a Grandmaster or a Platinum player is plain backwards. It cheapens the entire concept of ranked mode, turning what’s intended to be a signifier of skill into an arbitrary number that sometimes goes up and sometimes goes down.
Overwatch 2 season 3 is due to begin sometime in early February.

Did you buy Prey on Steam? Not the 2017 version from Arkane and Bethedsa: I’m talking about the 2006 version from Human Head Studios and 2K Games. If you didn’t and want to now, you can’t—the original Prey was quietly removed from Steam a few years ago. If you own it, you should still be able to play it, and if you can find a physical copy or a online key-seller you may even be able to register a CD code with Steam. But you can’t buy it on Steam anymore.
Prey isn’t alone: games vanish from Steam all the time. Sometimes they reappear later, but other times they’re just plain gone—and this can happen for all sorts of different reasons including expired music rights, trademark disputes, exclusivity deals, fake review scams, shady developer practices, and more. Here’s 16 weird reasons games disappear from Steam.
The developer didn’t trademark the name
There was already something a bit weird about upcoming survival MMO The Day Before (opens in new tab), namely that it was a month from launch and had only shown off two trailers a few years ago. It only got weirder. Just before the devs promised to reveal new gameplay footage (opens in new tab), the game disappeared from Steam (and wishlists, where it was sitting in the number two slot) completely.
The reason? “Right before the release, Steam blocked our game page at the request of a private individual, because of the name The Day Before,” developer Fntastic said on Twitter. “After the announcement of the game, the above mentioned individual filled out an application before us to register the game trademark The Day Before in the United States.”
Fntastic also announced an eight month delay (opens in new tab) (which it says was already planned (opens in new tab)) and the new gameplay footage is currently on hold. As of today, The Day Before has still not returned to Steam, but we’re sure we haven’t heard that last of this bizarre story.

In November 2019 roughly 1,000 games abruptly vanished from Steam (opens in new tab). Many of them appeared to be what I’d describe as ‘extremely indie’—games few had ever heard of or played (at least judging by the number of Steam reviews). Some, however, had been on Steam for years and had hundreds of positive reviews at the time they vanished, so this mass removal didn’t appear to be one of Valve’s purges of asset-flips or scams.
A statement from Valve read: “We recently discovered a handful of partners that were abusing some Steamworks tools. We emailed all the affected partners.” That’s not all that much of an explanation, but we hope to someday learn a bit more about what really happened. Meanwhile, some of the removed games have reappeared on Steam (at least one with a new publisher), while others are still gone for good.
Disney stops paying for SecuROM DRM
The peril of DRM can raise its ugly head years down the road. A good example is Tron: Evolution, which became unplayable in 2019 because its publisher, Disney Interactive, apparently stopped subscribing to SecuROM (opens in new tab). With the DRM service inactive for Tron: Evolution, the game has become a lock with chewing gum stuck in it. Players currently aren’t able to verify their serial key, so the game simply won’t launch.
This obviously isn’t just a problem for Steam users but people who bought the game elsewhere, too. At any rate, Tron: Evolution has been delisted from Steam. Hopefully, Disney will eventually release a DRM-free version to the admittedly few people who still want to play a nine-year-old game we scored at a 29% (opens in new tab). But frankly, it doesn’t matter how few people play it or how bad the game is. If you buy a game, you should be able to play it forever.
An exclusive deal was made with Epic Games
The Epic Games Store arrived with quite a splash in 2018, luring developers to its marketplace with a better revenue cut than Valve offers, as well as revenue guarantees (opens in new tab). It doesn’t hurt that millions already use Epic’s launcher to play Fortnite, either. As a result, a number of developers and publishers agreed to exclusive launches on the Epic Store.
Metro Exodus is the most notable example, as it took preorders for months on Steam before going exclusive on Epic just weeks before its launch. Pre-purchases on Steam were halted, and Exodus wouldn’t return to the Steam store until 2020 when its one-year exclusive deal with Epic expired.
It contained a Winnie the Pooh reference
Censors in China have banned Winnie the Pooh due to memes that used pictures of the fictional anthropomorphic teddy bear to make fun of Chinese president Xi Jinping. Yeah, this is a real thing that happened because the world we live in is ridiculous.
Red Candles, the developer of Taiwanese horror game Devotion (opens in new tab), included a reference to this Winnie the Pooh meme and other assorted commentary on China, which led to heavy review bombing of Devotion (opens in new tab), as well as another game by Red Candles, Detention. Red Candles apologized and removed the Pooh reference, but it didn’t end there. The developer’s ties to its publishing partners were severed and Devotion was abruptly removed from Steam (opens in new tab).
A DMCA notice was issued
Stardock, maker of Star Control: Origins, was issued a DMCA notice from the makers of the original MS-DOS game Star Control during a long-running and semi-exhausting legal wrestling match (opens in new tab) over the copyrights and trademarks of the series. As a result, Origins was removed from Steam. Happily, it returned to Steam (opens in new tab) after several weeks, and the lawsuit was finally settled (opens in new tab) in June of 2019.
Music rights expired
You can buy Alan Wake on Steam—but for a while, that wasn’t the case (opens in new tab). The reason had to do with music. It’s common for a game developer to pay for the rights to songs for a certain period of time—seven years, in the case of Alan Wake—and when that time expires, the game can no longer be sold if it still contains those songs. Grid, Dirt 3, F1 2013, Tony Hawk Hawk Pro Skater HD, and numerous other games have vanished from Steam and other digital marketplaces due to music licenses expiring.
This isn’t unique to gaming—we’ve seen it happen to TV shows like The Wonder Years and WKRP in Cincinati, which can’t be re-broadcast or sold once the rights to the music used on the shows have expired. The music either has to be removed from the show and replaced with something else, or new deals with license holders for each song need to be made. Years after a show or game has wrapped production, it’s extremely difficult for either of those things to happen. Happily, in the case of Alan Wake, Microsoft was able to renegotiate the music rights (opens in new tab) and get the game back on sale with all of its original soundtrack intact.
Because of fake reviews
Reviews causing a stir is nothing new, but it’s entirely another matter when a developer tries to boost its Steam review score and word of mouth with fake reviews for its own game. We’ve seen it a few times now: Acram Digital’s board game adaptations were pulled from Steam (opens in new tab) by Valve in 2018 after it came to light that a staff member of Acram had been posting positive reviews of their game using different Steam accounts.
Something similar happened in the same year when publisher Insel Games attempted to ‘encourage’ employees to post positive reviews (opens in new tab) of its game Wild Buster. When Valve got wind of it, they pulled the game from Steam. Meanwhile, Acram’s games have since returned to Steam, but Wild Buster has not.
It contained ‘sexual content’
House Party, an Early Access game from 2017, quickly rose to popularity before it was suddenly yanked from the Steam store. That was due to complaints of ‘pornography’ in the game being sent to Valve, though that’s as vague and hard to define as the term ‘sexual content.’ House Party returned a few days later having added a ‘censor bar’ to certain scenes, though cleverly provided a patch players could use to remove it if they wanted the game to remain uncensored.
House Party isn’t the only game targeted with complaints about ‘pornography’—several anime-style games, such as those made by developer HuniePot and the visual novel Mutiny!! were warned in 2018 that they were in violation of Steam guidelines. The warning came with deadlines to alter or censor their games, or face being taken off Steam. The tricky thing is that these guidelines are confusing and inconsistent, and it’s not clear why these specific games are the subject of complaints while others that feature sex or nudity aren’t. HuniePot released a censored version of its game on Steam to comply with the warning.
It’s been replaced by a remastered version
Dark Souls: Prepare to Die edition was removed from sale in May 2018, when Dark Souls: Remastered Edition arrived. As with a few other examples above, this doesn’t mean it vanishes from your Steam library if you own it, but you can no longer purchase it. Multiplayer for this version of Dark Souls is also dead for good.
Similarly, when Rockstar released the GTA Trilogy Definitive Edition, it was a huge mess (opens in new tab), and it didn’t help that the original games were delisted when the remaster arrived (opens in new tab).
This is almost true of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim. The original version of Skyrim won’t come up in a search of Steam, just the other versions (VR, Special Edition, Anniversary Upgrade, and Anniversary Edition). It is, however, still there. It appears Bethesda is just hiding it, hoping newcomers will buy the newer versions instead.
Technical problems
Batman: Arkham Knight is maybe the most well-known example: after launching on PC, the port was widely criticized by players due to performance issues, after which publisher Warner Bros. suspended digital sales (opens in new tab). It was, to put it lightly, a big shock and at the time pretty much unprecedented for such a major release.
Five Nights at Freddy’s World creator Scott Cawthon withdrew his own game from Steam (opens in new tab) as well, stating he wasn’t satisfied with the ratings and reviews it was receiving and apologizing for its state at the time of release. He even offered refunds to Steam users, no matter when it had been purchased or for how long it had been played.
They’re scams
In September of 2017, Valve removed 173 games from Steam (opens in new tab), all from the same single developer. These games, with names like Shapes4, Shapes5, Shapes6, and yes, Shapes7, appeared to simply have been created in order to mine Steam trading cards for profit. “They generate many thousands of [Steam] keys and hand them out to bots running Steam accounts, which then idle away in their games to collect Trading Cards.” A clever ruse, but one Valve is now wise to.
Another developer, the creator of Active Shooter, was removed from Steam for similar reasons (opens in new tab). “Ata is a troll, with a history of customer abuse, publishing copyrighted material, and user review manipulation,” a Valve rep said. “His subsequent return under new business names was a fact that came to light as we investigated the controversy around his upcoming title. We are not going to do business with people who act like this towards our customers or Valve.”
The game isn’t good
Lots of games aren’t good, but they usually stick around anyway. Not all, however. Afro Samurai 2 was taken off Steam (opens in new tab) by its makers, and future episodes canceled, because “The game was a failure,” according to general manager of developer Versus Evil Steve Escalante.
“If you look at the reviews, it wasn’t that the game was broken or buggy, people just didn’t like it,” Escalante said. Fair enough.
The game wasn’t finished
The first Early Access game I ever bought was Under The Ocean, a survival game, way back in 2012. I know Early Access is a gamble, but I enjoyed the game and was willing to be patient as it slowly wound its way through development. Until, eventually, it simply didn’t. Issues arose between members of the team, the money ran out, and the developer removed the game from Steam in 2015.
The developer threatened to kill Gabe Newell
This is the first and only example—at least I hope—but worth noting to round out the list. As a general rule: don’t ever threaten to kill anyone, ever. And not just because it may get your game removed from Steam. Because, like, it’s a criminal act and a horrible thing to do.
Paranautical Activity (opens in new tab) was taken off Steam in October of 2014 after a member of the development team made death threats to Gabe Newell. The developer responsible resigned, then rejoined the studio, then sold the rights to another distribution company, and the game re-arrived on Steam (opens in new tab), titled Deluxe Atonement Edition.
They ran out of digital copies?
I began this article with 2006’s Prey, and I hoped by the time I finished I’d have found the reason Prey is no longer on Steam. It’s not entirely clear, though. In 2009, Kotaku reported that Prey had sold out during a Steam sale (opens in new tab), which is a weird thing to happen, all things considered. I’ve seen some speculation that Steam codes were tied to physical CD-ROM keys provided by publisher 2K, and that’s what ran out, though I’d expect more could be generated without much fuss. At any rate, it’s now gone, apparently forever. If I find out more, I’ll update you.
