When you are many thousands of hours deep into a six-year-old videogame, it takes a lot to surprise you. But today’s Destiny 2 season finale did just that. I’ll explain why in a second, but first here’s the obligatory SPOILER WARNING for details and discussion of the final Season of the Seraph mission and accompanying cut-scene which is embedded further down the page.

To play the content you need to visit the H.E.L.M. and pick up a quest called Final Dawn. Here the Warmind Rasputin explains that Eramis, the Fallen antagonist from Beyond Light, has accessed Rasputin’s ABHORRENT IMPERATIVE protocol, which involves shooting The Traveller down—that’s the enormous orbital golfball which gives the guardians their powers— using a network of weaponised satellites.

Pasokon Retro is our regular look back at the early years of Japanese PC gaming, encompassing everything from specialist ’80s computers to the happy days of Windows XP.

Tokimeki Memorial Windows box

Developer: Konami Released: 1995 PC: Windows 95 (Image credit: Konami, Mobygames)

Konami’s Tokimeki Memorial is the Resident Evil of dating sims: it didn’t create the genre it made famous, but it sure as heck defined it. After its PC Engine console debut in 1994 the game swiftly became a million-selling success story, giving rise to countless silly and serious spinoffs at home and in arcades. It was swiftly remade, demade, and ported to just about every successful format at the time—including Windows 95. This version of the game ran in a console-beating hi-colour mode at a pin-sharp 640×480 resolution, and if that wasn’t already enough to encourage a fan to double, triple, or even quadruple dip, the box included an exclusive shirt-sized iron-on transfer print to sweeten the deal.

Mick Gordon, the composer on games like 2017’s Prey, the Doom reboots, and the new Wolfenstein games, has been hard at work on upcoming BioShock-like Atomic Heart (opens in new tab), but he’s not keeping the money for it. In a post to Twitter earlier today, the veteran videogame musician announced he’s going to donate his fee for the game to the Australian Red Cross Ukraine Crisis Appeal (opens in new tab), in order to “use [his] work as a means to help those affected by the conflict” that began when Russia invaded Ukraine almost a year ago.

Atomic Heart, which releases next week, is being developed by Mundfish, a Russian studio. But Gordon’s donation isn’t intended as a disavowal of either the game or its developer, which Gordon praised highly for its commitment to “imagination and artistic freedom”. The artist says he’s excited to hear his “musical contributions come to life” when the game comes out. Gordon reserves his ire for the Russian government alone, saying, “This invasion was not a decision of the Russian people but rather an authoritarian regime that disregards human rights and dignity”.

Guild Wars 2 had a good 2022. Its tenth year brought a new expansion, the return of the first season of its Living World story, a Steam launch, and quality-of-life improvements that addressed some long-standing gripes lingering in its ageing code. It also brought renewed hope for the future, with the announcement—shortly after End of Dragons’ release—of a fourth expansion. It was such a good year that we named it our Best Ongoing Game.

Now, for 2023, ArenaNet is preparing us for that expansion’s release. We don’t have a theme, or even a release date. Instead, we have a new format for how expansions (plural) will be released.

In the real world, my seducing skills are a little, uh, shit. But in videogames, I’m a certified Cassanova. I’ve secured many a virtual beau over the years across an assortment of roles, from space commander to humble farmhand. They all have their own unique quirks, flaws and personalities that make wooing them one of my favourite parts of diving into any game that lets me smooch other characters.

On this day of love, Valentine’s Day, what better way to celebrate than to pit all of my videogame beloveds together in a battle to the death? Who, out of everyone, was the best of the best? Who will I fiercely protect when we discuss our gaming romances and you say my choice is boring or rubbish? Let’s find out.

10. Warren – Life is Strange

A very boring pick to start off with. The first Life is Strange presents Max with two romantic interests throughout its five episodes: the safe, nerdy Warren, or the bombastic and wildly rebellious Chloe. The story heavily centres around the latter’s relationship with Max and regularly pushes their relationship a lot more than Warren’s, who is usually friendzoned by Max in dialogue.

What the world needs now is Doom, sweet Doom. Yes, while the 14th of February sends some folks’ thoughts into the aether, while others search through gas station bouquet stands, the dedicated speedmapping mod team Pineapple Under the Sea Studios know that one universal truth remains: What the world really needs today of all days is Doom.

I bring you the studio’s 24th (!) major Doom project, the aptly named Lover’s Quarrel (opens in new tab). Themed around love and Valentine’s day, a bunch of mappers were given six hours apiece to create Deathmatch maps, which were then adjusted (“often in major ways”) to also work as singleplayer maps.

Following the archeology announcement and those Sniffer details, Mojang has announced yet another Minecraft 1.20 (opens in new tab) feature today and it’s a sweet one. The update will include a new biome after all: the Cherry Blossom biome. Mojang had kept pretty quiet about whether we could expect a new biome in 1.20 so this is a nice Valentine’s surprise.

“These beautiful new trees fill the horizon with a stunning shade of pink,” Mojang says. “Of course these new trees can also be broken down and crafted into a full wood-set, including the newly introduced hanging signs and cherry tree saplings to grow more of the lovely pink trees.”

From the screenshots Mojang has shared in its announcement post (opens in new tab), you can spot cherry blossoms floating through the air beneath the trees, landing strewn across the ground. And the cherry blossom saplings look pretty cute in flower pots too. When they’re full grown, Cherry Blossom trees have a purplish bark and pink wood inside. Apparently sheep, pigs, and bees are all drawn to the blossoms and will spawn in the new biome.

Hogwarts Legacy Fluxweed Stem is an ingredient you’ll need during your time at the School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. Professor Garlick, the herbology teacher, gives you an assignment to grow some, but you will run into problems if you still need to unlock the Room of Requirement (opens in new tab).

You can buy the magical plant, too, so if you only need it to concoct a specific potion you can get hold of it easily enough. If you don’t have enough cash, eye chests give you 500 Galleons each, so it’s worth opening a few to boost your wallet. Here’s where to find Hogwarts Legacy Fluxweed Stem, where to buy the seeds, and how to grow them.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 is shortly entering its second season of competitive content, and the developers have now posted about what players can expect from the new ranked mode. The post also goes on to outline the various cosmetic rewards in enormous detail, and one feature jumped out immediately.

Naturally the higher players rise in this new ranked mode, the more loot they’ll be showered with. One cool feature is that iridescent rank players and those in the Top 250 leaderboard get an Animated Calling Card at the season’s end: But the #1 Ranked Play player receives “a special, one-of-a-kind exclusive Animated Calling Card and Emblem, which can be considered the ultimate bragging rights from Ranked Play.”

Samsung has rapidly released a firmware update for its troubled 990 Pro premium PCIe 4.0 SSD. The news comes just a week after Samsung promised to do just that (opens in new tab).

If that seems reasonably timely, problems with more than one Samsung drive have proliferated into something of a palaver in recent weeks. As we reported previously, some Samsung 990 Pro (opens in new tab) drives seem to be suffering from rapid drive health degradation as reported by Samsung’s own Magician SSD tool.
