Thankfully I took the time to carefully mull over the few letters I had remaining, and scraped by with today’s Wordle answer on the final line.

A Wordle hint for Tuesday, August 8

Someone who chooses to deliberately upset or harm another person could be described as today’s answer. This deeply negative behaviour can occur at any age and in any social environment.

Yes, a letter is used twice in today’s puzzle.

Wordle help: 3 tips for beating Wordle every day

Looking to extend your Wordle winning streak? Perhaps you’ve just started playing the popular daily puzzle game and are looking for some pointers. Whatever the reason you’re here, these quick tips can help push you in the right direction:

  • Start with a word that has a mix of common vowels and consonants.
  • The answer might repeat the same letter.
  • Try not to use guesses that include letters you’ve already eliminated.

There’s no racing against the clock with Wordle so you don’t need to rush for the answer. Treating the game like a casual newspaper crossword can be a good tactic; that way, you can come back to it later if you’re coming up blank. Stepping away for a while might mean the difference between a win and a line of grey squares.

Wordle gives you six rows of five boxes each day, and it’s up to you to work out which five-letter word is hiding among them to win the popular daily puzzle.

It’s usually a good plan to start with a strong word like ALERT—or any other word with a good mix of common consonants and multiple vowels—and you should be off to a flying start, with a little luck anyway. You should also avoid starting words with repeating letters, so you don’t waste the chance to confirm or eliminate an extra letter. Once you hit Enter, you’ll see which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.

Your second guess should compliment the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you might have missed on the first row—just don’t forget to leave out any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. After that, it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the correct word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words and don’t forget letters can repeat too (eg: BOOKS).

If you need any further advice feel free to check out our Wordle tips, and if you’d like to find out which words have already been used, you can scroll to the relevant section above.

Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle, as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle, refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.

So, you’re a security conscious gamer. You’ve got strong passwords, you don’t click suspicious links and you’re not conned by yet another amazing offer of free bitcoin. But when was the last time you gave thought to the security of your typing? That dastardly AI strikes again. This one is able to listen to your keystrokes and predict what you’re typing with 95% accuracy.

Bleeping Computer reports that a team from several British universities has trained an AI to accurately predict your key inputs via a microphone. That means anything you type on your keyboard, such as passwords, private messages, company secrets, and even potentially classified material could be leaked to a third party. Here is the research paper.

The deep learning model is able to train itself by recording the minute differences in various keystrokes. The waveforms of the sounds each key produces are then used to predict what is being typed with scary accuracy.

The researchers used a MacBook Pro for typing, while recording audio from a nearby iPhone and perhaps most disturbingly, via a Zoom call. So it’s not just your own security you’d need to be responsible for. You’ll need everyone else on the call to be conscious of it too.

Zoom aside, surely such an attack would still need microphone access permissions. So, as long as you’re aware of malware and how to avoid it you should be fine, and if not, well, you’ve probably got more pressing matters to worry about.

What this does is bring more attention to how vulnerable much of the data we take for granted really is. It’s one thing to avoid phishing, but it’s quite another to think about just who—or what—is listening in on things you don’t want to be disclosed.

Interestingly, the testing was still accurate on quiet keyboards, so my wish to have blue keyboards banned might fall upon deaf ears, at least those who aren’t deaf already after being tortured by those things.

What’s next? An AI that can zoom in on your fingerprint and use it to access all your devices? Your phone’s selfie camera stealing a picture of your retina? That’s if some rogue AI doesn’t decide to kill us all first. What a crazy world we live in. AI and deep learning models are evolving by the day, and so are the clever scumbags who rip off others.

A new autobattler will release on August 10th as Tales & Tactics hits Steam Early Access, bringing a tabletop-inspired journey to a grandiose tournament of tactical skill to your computer. It’s a combination of autobattle drafting game, like Auto  Chess or Teamfight Tactics, with roguelike bonuses, items, and adventures ala Slay the Spire and its ilk.

It’s a wild variety of bonuses and combos all stacked on top of each other to let you make crazy builds that break the game—and the developers are hoping that its staged “complexity at your own pace” will ease you into it and only add that complexity as you want it.

Tales & Tactics is developed by Table 9 Studio, makers of one of our favorite Slay the Spire mods—Downfall, the one that casts you as a villain. It was good enough to get one of those fancy standalone, non-workshop Steam pages reserved for the best mods.

The basics of Tales & Tactics have you drafting characters from a unit pool of archetypes and jobs—skeletons, demons, orcs, faeries, marksmen, scrappers, tanks, mages. Merging three of a kind lets you upgrade them to a new level, and equipping them with permanent gear lets you tweak how they behave in combat. While doing all that you’re able to then double-down on combos by grabbing character buffs, ala Slay the Spire’s items, that affect every unit you take. None of that’s to mention that you apparently can upgrade your character to have more powers.

There’s a demo you can play right now, actually. PC Gamer’s Harvey Randall gave it a shot back when they’d first posted it and found it was quite complex, but was still promising. (Or extra promising if you like complexity.)

“I genuinely think Tales & Tactics is worth your time if you’re into auto-battlers or roguelikes, and especially if you’re into both. It mashes two different genres together in a novel way, and it’s filled with charming artwork and little beasties to enjoy,” he said, “My issues with the game’s dizzying amount of systems could be a draw for the min-maxing geniuses of the gaming world.”

You can find Tales & Tactics on Steam, where it’ll launch on August 10th, 2023. It’s developed by Table 9 Studio and published by Yogscast Games.

The recent Magic: The Gathering 30th anniversary panel at GenCon included some big surprises regarding the Universes Beyond line, which recently resulted in a popular Lord of the Rings crossover. It’ll be picking up a couple more names of particular note to videogame-likers. The post-apocalyptic world of Fallout and the many worlds of Final Fantasy will be coming to Magic in the next two years, and we should expect to see some Jurassic World cards too.

Fallout is first on the bill, and will arrive in the form of preconstructed decks for use in Commander. Commander is the format where four-or-so players go head to head with 100-card decks, each led by a single legendary Commander who can be played at any time, and even brought back from the dead.

It’s a chaotic and casual format that’s become the most popular official way to play Magic, ahead of even the one-on-one competitions of Standard format. Like the crossovers for Warhammer 40,000 and Doctor Who, the Fallout cards will only be legal in Commander, and will be packaged as multiple preconstructed decks “each representing one of the wasteland’s many colorful factions.”

Final Fantasy is a ways further off, scheduled for 2025. Unlike the Fallout cards, the Final Fantasy set will be a tentpole release available in booster packs, and presumably legal across various formats. “The set will encompass each main Final Fantasy game that has been released to date,” Wizards of the Coast said, “from the original Final Fantasy to the recently released Final Fantasy 16. The set will also be available to play on Magic Arena.”

We also got some more detail on the previously announced Assassin’s Creed crossover. Coming in July of 2024, this one will be arriving in the form of “Beyond boosters”, a new flavor of booster pack that contains both new cards and reprints, and is legal in formats including Modern, but not draft. It still sounds a bit confusing, but we’ll hear more as its release date gets closer.

Finally, the Jurassic World cards will be arriving in the form of booster inserts, meaning they’ll be tucked away inside booster packs for a mainline set, like the Transformers cards in boosters for The Brothers’ War. The dino-themed Jurassic World cards will be part of an upcoming set called The Lost Caverns of Ixalan.

The GenCon panel also laid out the details of other upcoming releases that don’t involve crossmedia marketing, like Ravnica Remastered and Murders at Karlov Manor, which are both on the slate for the first quarter of 2024, as well as the year’s subsequent sets, which are called Outlaws of Thunder Junction, Modern Horizons 3, Bloomburrow, and Duskmourn: House of Horror.

In recent months, co-operative industrial nightmare Warhammer 40,000: Darktide has added Chaos Spawn and new missions, as well as crossplay between the Steam and MS Store versions. In the next patch, which should be out mid-August, developer Fatshark is promising quality-of-life changes including additions to the mission board and crafting, as well as sharing the game’s currencies between all of your characters.

As a dev blog explains, all currencies that were previously character-bound—Ordo Dockets, Ordo Ingots, plasteel, and diamantine—will be merged into a single wallet accessible by any of your Rejects. This is a particularly welcome change, meaning that when your veteran hits max level and you start over as an ogryn, you won’t be broke.

Meanwhile, the mission board will be getting Maelstrom Missions that combine new modifiers with existing ones. Fatshark gives the example of a mission with “waves of Specialists, hunting grounds, waves of mutants and players have 20% reduced ability cooldown.” Maelstrom Missions will hand out more XP and Ordo Dockets in return for their increased difficulty.

A separate mission board for high-difficulty missions called “Auric-level Operations” bringing extra-hard challenges that always have conditions applied and are limited to level-30 characters is also coming. Changes to the way missions are generated will apparently bring “a more varied amount of conditions” all round. Maelstrom Missions will be available on the Auric-level Operations board as well.

Other changes to missions include a quickplay bonus like the Vermintide games have, handing out extra XP, Ordo Dockets, diamantine, and plasteel in return for jumping into quickplay to round out an existing squad, who might be halfway through a map. You’ll also be able to manually select which server you connect to, rather than automatically being assigned the one with the lowest latency.

Finally, changes to crafting will let you select exactly which perk you want to apply when refining an item, and two aspects of each weapon (whether perks or blessings) will be modifiable. The same goes for curios. The other two aspects of your weapons will be locked, however. Fatshark explained this decision by saying, “We are aware that the changes mentioned above do not give unrestricted freedom to all aspects of an item. To do so would have a big impact on item acquisition in Darktide, and we want to explore different paths further down the line.”

While some of these are nice improvements, as Darktide’s player numbers drop—presumably the reason behind encouragements like quickplay bonuses—it does seem like the real problem has gone unaddressed. Darktide’s combat remains excellent, it captures the setting’s atmosphere well, and the storytelling in its opening is enthralling. It’s just that after that perfect opening, all that’s left is repeating maps to level up in return for a series of cutscenes that feel like they’re from a completely different game.

Hopefully Fatshark is working on a significant chunk of new content behind the scenes, because additional story missions and classes is what makes the Vermintide games worth returning to—not tweaks to the crafting mechanics.

“All of the above changes are being prepared for our next patch to Darktide,” Fatshark says, “which will release around mid-August. As part of this patch there will be a maintenance period in which you will be unable to log in into the game, we expect it to last 3 hours.”

Details regarding AMD’s upcoming RX 7800 XT GPU have been hard to come by. In fact, even the name wasn’t confirmed. Speculation is moot, though, after someone at PowerColor accidentally posted the product page for the Red Devil Radeon RX 7800 XT. Oops!

The page (which has obviously been taken down) was spotted by @All_The_Watts (via VideoCardz) and listed a near-complete set of specifications. This surely means the card is coming sooner than we thought. It was only a couple of days ago that AMD CEO Dr Lisa Su said AMD was on track to launch “enthusiast-class” graphics cards before the end of October.

Die size 204mm² TBD 529mm²
TGP 165W TBD 315W
Price $269 TBD $899

Apart from the TDP of the card and it’s price, this is it, folks. But with this, we can now speculate about how this long-gestating card will perform. With a shader count of 3840, the 7800 XT has about 28% fewer shaders than the RX 7900 XT’s 5376. Both have 16GB of memory, but the 7900 XT’s is faster, plus it has a wider memory bus.

The RX 7800 XT is clocked a little higher, but if we were to assume the 7800 XT is about 28% slower than the RX 7900 XT, it wouldn’t be too far ahead of the RX 6800 XT, and that certainly wouldn’t be ideal for AMD. I’ll wait and see how it performs before getting too far ahead of myself.

Other key specs include the expected display connector complement of one HDMI 2.1 and three DisplayPort 2.1. PowerColor mentions that only two DP 2.1 connections are supported at the same time.

How the card ultimately performs in the market will come down to its price and performance versus the RTX 4060 Ti and RTX 4070. The RTX 4070 Ti is likely out of reach, given it’s a bit too close to the RX 7900 XT in performance.

PowerColor’s listing didn’t reveal a TDP, but considering the card comes equipped with two 8-pin power connectors, it’s shaping up to be a bit of a thirsty one compared to Nvidia’s offerings. It’s also a big triple slot, triple fan card, so it’s not going to be as efficient as something like the RTX 4060 Ti, which sips a relatively thrifty 160W.

Of course, the Red Devil is a premium model but I’d be surprised if entry-level RX 7800 XTs comes in at under 250W.

It’s clear we won’t have long to wait for AMD’s mid-range challenger. But one thing is for sure: someone at PowerColor got a terse call from the big boss. Or worse.

Baldur’s Gate 3 Twitch streamers are getting an early jump scare by hitting the character creator’s “hide clothes” option and discovering just how much it actually hides.

Despite the game warning you that there’s optional nudity in the game at the start, the top BG3 Twitch clips page is full of streamers surprised to see how quickly it can happen. In the character creation menus, there’s a toggle to “hide clothes”. Clicking it doesn’t just undress your character down to their underwear, it removes absolutely everything for all to see.

The Elden Ring god herself, MissMikkaa, tried to zoom in on her tiefling’s face before clicking hide clothes, presumably hoping the camera angle would keep things safe for work. But, it turns out, the camera helpfully zooms out (NSFW) for a full view of your character as soon as you click it, spurring MissMikkaa to swiftly toggle it back off in embarrassment.

“Woah, sorry, didn’t realize we had that kind of option in this game,” Shroud said after showing his entire audience a lot more of his tiefling (NSFW) than anyone expected to see. He quickly toggled the clothes back on, took a second to think about it, and turned them back off to research the genital options. “Hold on, I gotta take a look.”

While you can turn off the genitals and nudity in BG3’s settings, Twitch’s terms of service is fairly lax about nudity in games as long as it’s not the focus of the stream. On the streaming platform’s community guidelines page, it says, “Games featuring nudity, pornography, sex, or sexual violence as a core focus or feature are entirely prohibited,” but specifies that if you “only spend as much time as is required to progress,” it’s fine. Cyberpunk 2077 is another high-profile game that features full nudity that doesn’t break Twitch’s rules. And, as of June, Twitch now requires streamers to select a mature label for their broadcasts when playing mature-rated games—which warns viewers before the stream plays.

Sex scenes are also a part of BG3, but it’ll probably take some time before those start populating the Twitch clips page. For now, scrolling through the top clips in the last 24 hours gives you a comprehensive look at every streamer’s face as curiosity takes over and they click the forbidden button.

Expect more surprises now that Baldur’s Gate 3 is finally out (and is really good). The massive RPG is sitting near the top of Twitch’s stream categories with over 300,000 viewers.

Lenovo has just announced a 14-inch, RTX 4060-powered gaming laptop that may well be able to to hit that sweet spot between power, thermals, and portability. Right now, Lenovo has the top spot on our best gaming laptops guide secured, so we’re expecting good things from the slim and frankly pretty stylish upcoming Lenovo Legion Slim 5.

Not only will this be Lenovo Legion’s first foray into the world of OLED gaming laptops, but the 14-inch form factor also, and that’s something we’re really excited for: More current-gen gaming laptops that are actually highly portable.

Right now in the laptop space, there aren’t too many 14-inchers to speak of. There’s the Asus ROG Zephyrus G14, which holds the title of “best 14-inch gaming laptop” right now. It’s a high bar as one of the most portable form-factors, but with CPU and GPU thermals sitting at 93°C and 85°C respectively, it’s been clear jamming new hardware in a little chassis would be a challenge for manufacturers. Especially going as slim as

The main current-gen contender for the Legion Slim 5 is Razer Blade 14, which our Dave was unsurprisingly obsessed with considering his track record with Razer’s portable machines. And Razer actually managed to keep things above board with the Blade’s 140W RTX 4070, which topped out at 73°C in our testing, along with the CPU’s 83°C, so things are looking good in that respect when it comes to this generation of laptops.

The Legion Slim 5 will come packing Nvidia’s portable RTX 4060 as its highest configuration. So, while it’s sure not going to smash through Baldur’s Gate 3 at 200-odd fps, a humble 105W of power behind it should see the thermals sitting even lower than the Blade’s, if we’re lucky.

Native resolution 2880 x 1800
Refresh rate 120Hz

GPU Up to Nvidia RTX 4060 (105W)
RAM Up to 64GB DDR5-6400
Storage 512GB or 1TB PCIe 4.0 SSD
Battery 73.6Wh
Dimensions 249.12 x 327.49 x 20.79mm
Weight 1.9 kg

As for the rest of the spec, Lenovo has opted for the same Ryzen 9 7940HS as the Blade, so we know to expect great things in terms of CPU power—95 fps averages in Hitman 3’s Dartmoor CPU benchy say enough, surely.

Lenovo is also going for a 2880 x 1800, 120Hz panel. I always appreciate a good 16:10 ratio, too, which helps when it comes to productivity. And I’m a big fan of the keyboard redesign for the 14-inch chassis. Similar to the Blade, Lenovo has gone sans-numpad, and that TrueStrike board doesn’t look as cramped in this small form-factor.

Coming around September time, the Lenovo Legion Slim 5 will start at $1,440, and will come with three months of free Xbox Game Pass Ultimate.

Wordle presents you with six rows of five boxes every day and the aim is to figure out the correct five-letter word by entering guesses and eliminating or confirming individual letters.

Getting off to a good start with a strong word like ARISE—something containing multiple vowels, common consonants, and no repeat letters—is a good tactic. Once you hit Enter, the boxes will show you which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.

Your second guess should compliment the starting word, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. With a bit of luck, you should have some coloured squares to work with and set you on the right path.

After that, it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the right word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words (so no filling the boxes with EEEEE to see if there’s an E). Don’t forget letters can repeat too (ex: BOOKS).
