I love this period of time in GPUland. You know the one I mean, it’s between the point when AMD and Nvidia have released the main chip designs using the latest architecture and the start of the refresh season. It’s easy to tell when it’s that moment, because tech news channels are awash with leaks about what’s forthcoming. So let’s take a look at the rumours and make up our minds about it all.

Most of the gossip has been focused on a refresh of the RTX 4080, in the form of faster Super model. Nvidia’s been doing this for a long time now and you only have to look at the past three architectures to see what I mean. For the old Pascal era, the GTX 1080 Ti came out in March 2017, about ten months after the GTX 1080 launched.

As initially reported by The New York Times and confirmed by The Hollywood Reporter, Jon Stewart’s Apple TV+ series The Problem with Jon Stewart was canceled just weeks before filming of the third season was scheduled to start. According to one of the NYT’s sources, “Mr. Stewart told members of his staff on Thursday that potential show topics related to China and artificial intelligence were causing concern among Apple executives”. According to THR’s sources, executives told Stewart he had to be “aligned” with them regarding the show’s topics, and that led to him deciding to leave.

Apple is reportedly working on its own AI large-language model, and has banned its employees from using other AI tools, such as ChatGPT. AI tools are also used by the iPhone’s photography and search software. As for China, a lot of Apple’s production happens there and the company has invested heavily in the country’s infrastructure. Apparently enough that Apple doesn’t like to see the Chinese government criticized, at least not on its own streaming service.

You may remember Real Civil Engineer as the twisted mind behind the poop-powered city made in the original Cities: Skylines game. Well, he’s back again and turning his hand to Cities: Skylines 2. Aside from pulling a few vaguely sewage-related antics this time around, he’s been heartily nerding out over the road tools, assessing their realism, and passing ten years worth of engineering judgement on the game’s starter highways.

In his recent video made in collaboration with PC Gamer, which you can watch above, RCE starts off buying up all the land with his unlimited cash. And, of course, he wouldn’t be worthy of the title of former engineer if he didn’t make a point of re-designing the starter-grade separated junction to make it cheaper, despite having started the game with unlimited money. So he sets about replacing the tunnels with a nice bridge, complete with retaining walls. The ease with which he’s able to do so—using the elevation step tool—is a real testament to the versatility of the tools..

He may have departed from Square Enix a time ago, but that hasn’t stopped Hironobu Sakaguchi from actively participating in the series that he created and continues to flourish in his absence. The father of Final Fantasy has been playing its 14th instalment for almost two whole years, and he isn’t afraid to admit the absolute death grip the critically-acclaimed MMO has on him.

During London’s Fan Festival, Sakaguchi sat down with Final Fantasy 14 director and producer Naoki Yoshida to talk about his time with the game and even brought a couple of surprises to the table. When discussing his first foray into the MMO, Sakaguchi admitted that his early months with the game took up a significant amount of his time. “I believe every day I was in there for 12 hours,” he said through a translator, adding that Final Fantasy 14 “took up about 80%” of his time awake, boosting that number up to 100% if he didn’t include eating.

It was only good use of all the grey letters I’d stumbled on previously that saved today’s game, helping me home in on the answer. It wasn’t quick but hey, some days any kind of win is better than none at all. As clever as I felt for finding the answer in the letters left behind, I’d definitely appreciate a few more greens next time.

Ten months after the first RDNA 3-powered laptop GPUs appeared, AMD has finally got around to using its premier Navi 31 processor in a mobile configuration. The new Radeon RX 7900M is being touted as being 7% faster on average than Nvidia’s RTX 4080 Laptop, so fans of high-end gaming on the go might end up going all Team Red.

In terms of specs, just think Radeon RX 7900 GRE, but a little bit slower. Like all of the Radeon RX 7900-series models that use the RDNA 3-based Navi 31, this new GPU is a medium-sized lump of silicon, containing all of the graphics circuitry (called the GCD), surrounded by a number of tiny chiplets that house the L3 cache and memory interfaces (MCDs).
