The roleplay community in Final Fantasy 14 is, simply put, an ocean. It’s absolutely massive, comprising several servers, hundreds of night clubs, bars, fight pits, free companies, and homegrown drama. It’s big enough that last year, someone thought buying four billboards in California and Texas to advertise their virtual nightclub was a good idea (it wasn’t).
If you’ve never dipped your foot into roleplay in an MMORPG, it’s basically storytelling improv. You pretend your character actually exists in the world, saddle them with a backstory, then natter to other people. You can go on adventures, explore fraught character drama, or just run a coffee shop or something. The possibilities are endless.
As a big ol’ nerd and long-time roleplayer myself, getting started can be intimidating for the less socially-inclined adventurers out there. No-one’s gonna invite you to anything, you just need to kinda huck yourself into other people’s sessions of make-believe and hope you aren’t annoying people.
That’s worsened by the fact there are some unspoken rules—like the difference between IC (in-character) and OOC (out-of-character) talk. Or being the 100th guy that evening to show up with a katana talking about your dead parents. Or knowing to avoid the Quicksands. Don’t ask. Forget I said anything about that place.
Thankfully, some thoughtful players made a fansite called The Kweh to solve those exact problems: “‘I want to learn how to RP but I don’t know where to start.’ was a phrase I heard over and over again, and on March 8, 2023, the Beginner’s Guide to RP was released.”
The site’s written by the player Legaia Lindblum, with some charming illustrations by 7ink and Bubgoat. Its latest addition is built specifically to help players with social anxiety work through those feelings. “The helpful tips and suggestions you’ll find here are based on 80 volunteer interviews with FFXIV players from around the world.”
What follows is a pretty great primer for anyone nervous about striking up some make-believe conversation. The site also introduces readers to some more advanced topics, such as “bleed”, which refers to when a roleplay scenario starts bleeding into real life feelings. Happens more often than you’d think, especially when the story takes a serious turn.
Honestly, it’s just nice to see people looking out for each other like this. There’s clearly been a lot of thought, craft, and care put into building up these resources. A lot of the lessons in the beginner’s guide—like not making your character invincible, which’ll typically annoy everyone—were lessons I had to learn the hard way back in the day.

Wordle gives you six rows of five boxes each day, and it’s up to you to work out which five-letter word is hiding among them to win the popular daily puzzle.
It’s usually a good plan to start with a strong word like ALERT—or any other word with a good mix of common consonants and multiple vowels—and you should be off to a flying start, with a little luck anyway. You should also avoid starting words with repeating letters, so you don’t waste the chance to confirm or eliminate an extra letter. Once you hit Enter, you’ll see which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.
Your second guess should compliment the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you might have missed on the first row—just don’t forget to leave out any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. After that, it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the correct word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words and don’t forget letters can repeat too (eg: BOOKS).

Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle, as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle, refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.

After nearly a quarter century of helping lead Bethesda Softworks, Pete Hines, the company’s head of publishing and one of its most recognizable faces, has announced that he is leaving the company and retiring from the videogame industry.
“After 24 years, I have decided my time at Bethesda Softworks has come to an end,” Hines wrote in a message shared on Twitter. “I am retiring and will begin an exciting new chapter of my life exploring interests and passions, donating my time where I can, and taking more time to enjoy life.
“This is not a decision I came to easily or quickly, but after an amazing career, culminating in the incredible launch of Starfield, it feels the time is right.”
Hines joined Bethesda in 1999 as the marketing guy, a position that evolved over the years into senior vice president of global marketing and communications. Outwardly, though, the role didn’t seem to change much: He was Bethesda’s front man, a regular point of contact for journalists and a familiar face at conferences and press events.
According to Mobygames, he also squeezed in a bit of instruction manual writing for a handful of games including Sea Dogs, PBA Tour Bowling 2001, IHRA Drag Racing, and one you may have actually heard of, The Elder Scrolls 3: Morrowind.
In October 2022, 23 years to the month after joining Bethesda, Hines took on a more business-focused role as the company’s head of publishing, but while Todd Howard stepped into the spotlight in the lead-up to Starfield, Hines was in there too, regularly providing interviews and dispensing occasional bits of advice about the game.
Bethesda acknowledged the value of that presence in its own farewell message but said it was “only a small part of his role” at the company.
“The way he represented us carried over into the values he nurtured here: authenticity, integrity, and passion,” Bethesda said. “His contributions have been integral in building Bethesda and its family of studios into the world-class organization that it is today. His vision helped push us forward, and his hard work inspired us.”
As is the way with farewell messages, Hines said that “this is certainly not goodbye by any means,” and that he “will never stop being part of this incredible community.”
“Thank you to the hundreds and thousands of fans I’ve gotten to meet and talk to over the last 24 years,” Hines wrote. “Your energy, creativity, and support has been such a big part of my journey. I look forward to experiencing the next part of the adventure alongside you.”

AMD’s Fluid Motion Frames (AFMF) technology took a while to come to market. When it made its debut just over a couple of weeks back, support was limited to just two games: Forspoken and Immortals of Aveum. It appears as though AMD is happy with how the tech is maturing, as it’s just released a preview driver that extends support to well beyond a handful of white-listed titles.
According to the driver’s release notes, Fluid Motion Frames support is available not just on any RX 7000-series GPU, but any RX 6000-series one as well. But the key development is that AMD says it will now work in any DirectX 11 or DirectX 12 game.
That’s really great news as it means AMD owners can get a ‘free’ performance uplift in pretty much any game released over the last 10 or more years. As a bonus, Fluid Motion Frames can be enabled on competing GPUs too. It even functions on the massively popular and venerable GTX 1060. AMD might inadvertently be discouraging users from upgrading if its frame generation tech is widely adopted by the public. Not that we’re complaining!
AMD Fluid Motion Frames is AMD’s frame generation technology. It’s a part of the FSR 3 feature set. It’s designed to boost frame rates in games at challenging settings, particularly at high resolution or in games with demanding ray tracing settings. For a comprehensive overview of FSR 3 upscaling and Fluid Motion Frames technology, it’s well worth checking out Jeremy’s overview.
This dramatically widened support is in stark contrast to Nvidia’s DLSS 3 technology, which requires per-game support and the dedicated hardware acceleration features exclusive to RTX 40-series GPUs. It remains to be seen if Nvidia can adapt frame generation to run on its older GPUs—that’s if it’s even possible given its hardware requirements.
AFMF and frame generation technology in general is not a magic bullet. Frame generation increases latencies. To combat this, AMD has introduced its revised Anti-Lag+ technology.
Notably, AFMF is not recommended when frame rates are low as frame generation will make already high latencies worse. AMD recommends AFMF should only be enabled for games running at a minimum frame rate of 55 FPS for 1080p displays, and 70 FPS for 1440p or above displays.
Do note that the driver is defined as a Technical Preview, so it’s not quite ready for a wider public release. Still, if you are the kind of gamer that’s happy to poke around and fiddle with your GPU settings and you’re prepared to deal with a bug or two, this driver is well worth a look.

Even my crusty old heart has melted at seeing how much everyone loves Baldur’s Gate 3’s companion characters—especially the actors who portrayed them. As reported by Polygon, after some reprised their roles for a High Rollers tabletop one-shot, many in the cast have been sharing playlists tailored to their characters.
Neil Newbon’s opted for quite a bit of David Bowie in his nearly 10-hour Astarion playlist, which makes sense as Astarion himself is a bit of a “Thin White Duke.” There’s quite a spread of stuff on there otherwise, but the dancier, early aughts stuff really screams “Astarion” to me.
Halsin’s playlist by actor Dave Jones really leans into that character’s romantic side, and I’m a fan of the double entendre in Bombay Bicycle Club’s “I Want To Be Your Only Pet” being on the Wild Shape master’s playlist. Samantha Béart’s Karlach playlist, meanwhile, has a healthy amount of dad rock in it, which really nails that character’s vibe. Gale of Waterdeep always struck me as a jazz cafe kind of guy, but Tim Downie’s Gale playlist still has a bit of that sense of sophistication—and a few pun song titles, like The Ink Spots’ “I Don’t Want to Set The World On Fire.”
Some of Baldur’s Gate 3’s wider cast have been getting in on the bit as well: Mega spoiler late game character the Emperor’s actor Scott Joseph has shared a playlist inspired by the rogue Mind Flayer. The actor describes it as “going on a journey beyond sight and sound… or maybe just The Emperor taking the nautiloid out for a spin.”
Joseph focuses on ideas of ambition and feeling disconnected with his song choices (“I Want It All,” “People Are Strange”), but I think when the Emperor pulls out his Zune, he’s queueing up straight whale sounds and field recordings of ice sheets cracking, the weirdo.
There’s also Dammon voice actor Frazer Blaxland’s extensive playlist inspired by fans’ shipping of the infernal blacksmith with Karlach—most of us at PC Gamer would rather ship Karlach with our own characters, but it’s hard to deny there isn’t a spark there. Truly, if you were craving some Baldur’s Gate-themed Spotify playlists, there has never been a better time in human history to be alive.

First announced in 2019, the return of Warhammer’s original tabletop setting has now been confirmed for next year. Games Workshop made the announcement as part of Warhammer Day 2023: “We can confirm today that Warhammer: The Old World will be one of the first releases for 2024.”
First announced all the way back in 2019, Warhammer: The Old World will be a new tabletop wargame set in the Warhammer Fantasy setting rather than the Age of Sigmar. If you’re familiar with Warhammer from the Total War or Vermintide videogames, this is the version of the setting you’ll know—a map resembling Renaissance Europe and its surrounds, with the forces of Chaos creeping in at the edge.
The first army to be fully revealed is the Kingdom of Bretonnia, with its peasants and knights—including miniatures of knights of the realm on foot for the first time. Some will be modeled in resin, like the handmaiden of the lady depicted floating serenely into battle, while others will be available in plastic, like the units of peasant bowmen.
“These regiments and other future regiments are returning in boxes that contain enough plastic miniatures to make a full regiment,” Games Workshop noted, “not just a rank or two. With the Peasant Bowmen box, you’ll be able to build a unit of 32 archers, complete with a command group and Defensive Stakes. So dreams of creating massive armies of ranked-up troops will be well within your grasp.”
Warhammer: The Old World will be set during the Age of Three Emperors, a time before the Great War Against Chaos seen in games like Mordheim. So don’t worry, it’ll be centuries before the End Times play out again. Initially, The Old World will focus on the Border Princes and the nations around them, meaning the core supported factions will be the Empire of Man, Orc & Goblin Tribes, Dwarfen Mountain Holds, Warriors of Chaos, Beastmen Brayherds, Wood Elf Realms, Tomb Kings of Khemri, and High Elf Realms. Other factions like the skaven and vampire counts will have rules available as free pdfs for those who still have their old armies.

Remedy’s Garth Marenghi simulator Alan Wake was followed by two DLC episodes, The Signal and The Writer, which continued on from its climax. At EGX, Remedy’s creative director Sam Lake confirmed that the upcoming sequel, Alan Wake 2, will also receive DLC—both paid and free—after its launch.
“We do have free DLCs drops coming,” Lake said, “and they too are pretty significant. I’m expecting us to be going more into detail pretty soon after the game is out, but all of that will be free for everyone who gets the game.”
Back in August, Joshua Wolens attended a preview event at Gamescom, where he described Alan Wake 2 as feeling like Remedy’s attempt to combine the best games it’s ever made: “You’ve got the austere, blocky title cards and discomfiting dreaminess of Control, the regular dips into live action of Quantum Break, and, look, Remedy can do whatever nominative sleight of hand it wants, but I know Max Payne when I see him, and ‘detective Alex Casey,’ who appears every now and then, is old Max through and through.”
Alan Wake 2 will apparently be more of a survival horror game than the original, and will involve playing as an FBI Agent named Saga Anderson as well as horror author/dreamweaver Alan Wake. It’ll be out on October 27, and will be releasing on the Epic Games Store.
