There’s no time pressure beyond making sure it’s done by midnight. So there’s no reason not to treat the game like a casual newspaper crossword and come back to it later if you’re coming up blank.

Every day Wordle presents you with six rows of five boxes, and it’s up to you to work out which secret five-letter word is hiding inside them.

You’ll want to start with a strong word like ALERT—something containing multiple vowels, common consonants, and no repeat letters. Hit Enter and the boxes will show you which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.

You’ll want your second go to compliment the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer.

After that it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the right word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words (so no filling the boxes with EEEEE to see if there’s an E). Don’t forget letters can repeat too (ex: BOOKS).

Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle, as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle, refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.

I built the best gaming PC I could for under $1200 using Black Friday deals, and now I actually want it

My favorite November tradition, other than eating myself into a turkey and pie coma, is seeing what kind of rig I can build using nothing but the best Black Friday PC gaming deals. I scour every retailer for the best prices on the best parts, looking for every opportunity to save a few bucks while still buying quality PC components. The trickiest thing about Black Friday shopping is just how much junk there is to wade through—there are dozens of sticks of RAM on sale for close to the same price, but dig into the specs and you’ll see differences in speed and latency hiding behind that “Black Friday deal” badge.

This year I gave myself a budget of $1,200 (pre-tax) to build a gaming PC that would normally cost $288 more. Once these Black Friday deals disappear, this PC build will run closer to $1,500.

This is a PC I’d happily build for myself, with no cut corners. At its heart are the non-overclocking version of our favorite gaming CPU, the Intel Core i5-13600KF, and an incredibly reasonably priced Radeon RX 6800 with 16GB of GDDR6. We’ve also got some fast DDR5 RAM, a 2TB PCIe Gen 4 SSD, and an all-in-one liquid cooler that’ll help that CPU stay cool.

Total cost: $1,163.74

The Core i5-13600KF can handle any current game you can throw at it and will be a strong gaming GPU for years to come, while the Radeon RX 6800’s ample VRAM will help a bit with the #stutterstruggle that’s afflicted so many PC games this year. AMD’s cards still aren’t fantastic at ray tracing, but this is still otherwise an absolute beastly 1440p graphics card. In our review, it delivered an average 75 fps in Total War: Three Kingdoms, 128 fps in Shadow of the Tomb Raider and 92 fps in Metro Exodus, all on Ultra settings.

I made sure to pick parts that would all fit in the selected case, so there shouldn’t be any rude surprises when you go to put it all together. If you’re feeling the itch to start the year with a new PC, it’s going to be hard to beat the price/performance of these deals.

Also, it has a Sonic the Hedgehog motherboard with built-in Wi-Fi 6E and a 2.5 Gbps Ethernet port. I set out to make a PC that would go fast, but I didn’t expect this would be how I got there.

Valve ‘accidentally’ leaks the earliest Left4Dead prototype, and it was a Counter-Strike mod all along

Valve didn’t just update Half-Life for the game’s recent 25th anniversary. It also spruced up Counter-Strike 1.6 to take advantage of the features and changes added to Valve’s 1998 masterpiece. Yet in doing so, Valve seemingly inadvertently opened the door to a fascinating slice of gaming history – the first prototype of Left 4 Dead.

This prototype, dubbed “Terror Strike” was built for Counter-Strike: Condition Zero, and it’s essentially a proof-of-concept for Left4Dead’s core gameplay using CS assets as placeholders. It sees the player exploring a white-boxed map of an urban area, using Counter-Strike weapons to fight off AI Counter-Terrorists coded to swarm the player like zombies.

The prototype was revealed by Valve content creator Gabe Follower, who posted a video of Terror Strike on the website formerly known as Twitter. “Valve accidentally compiled and pushed earliest Left 4 Dead prototype called “Terror Strike” into the latest CS 1.6 update and [the] community figured out how to play it.”

According to Gabe Follower, a user going by the name “The One Epicplayer” (classic) ported the map and “did the bot navigation mesh”. The goal Terror Strike is for the player, assuming the role of a terrorist to get to a certain building in the map and plant the bomb while under attack from the “zombies”. So far, so Counter-Strike. Once the bomb is planet, all the dead CT zombies respawn and try to swarm the player, who have to kill all the zombies while the bomb is planted.

Curiously enough, this is the second Left 4 Dead prototype to leak this year. Way back in January, another version of Terror Strike appeared online as a playable mod. This is functionally identical to the more recent leak, but instead being made for Condition Zero, it’s based off Counter Strike: Source. This gives us a pleasingly granular view of the evolution of Left4Dead, first in grainy GoldSrc goodness, before moving into Valve’s shinier Source engine that would ultimately form Left 4 Dead’s technological basis.

Of course, it’s entirely possible that Valve didn’t do this by mistake. The company also appeared to have fixed a bug in Half-Life based off its appearance in the game’s own 25th anniversary documentary, but it turns out fixing the bug was the plan all along, Valve just ran out of time to do it before the special occasion.

Robocop: Rogue City’s surprising success proves there’s still room in the business for mid-tier games with good licenses

Nacon has announced that Robocop: Rogue City, the future of law enforcement shooters, is its “best ever launch,” racking up more than 435,000 players and 2.7 million game sessions in its first two weeks of release.

“RoboCop: Rogue City has exceeded our expectations, and achieved a genuine feat as far as Nacon is concerned,” CEO Alan Falc said. “We are really proud to have been able to work with the studio Teyon on this game created by and for RoboCop die-hards. We would also like to thank MGM for the trust they placed in us throughout this collaboration, as well as all the players who have contributed to making this release such a great success.”

The PC version of Robocop: Rogue City holds a 75 aggregate score on Metacritic, which seems about right. We scored it 65% in our review, praising its “fantastic shootouts” but knocking it for “dull narrative and bloated pacing,” which is an issue for a game spun out of a movie that’s a lot smarter than it might first appear: “Ultimately Rogue City doesn’t rise above its B-game status in the way that Robocop transcended its B-movie origins.”

Still, it’s nice to see that a mid-tier shooter like Robocop: Rogue City can find success, especially when it’s trying to muscle into an already-crowded field just a week ahead of the launch of the genre-dominating Modern Warfare 3. Nacon isn’t Activision and so it’s not an apples-to-apples comparison, but I’m glad that there’s still room for so-called “double-A” games, and that smaller publishers can do well with them. Developer Teyon actually had similar luck with its previous game, Terminator: Resistance, another mid-budget licensed game that holds a “very positive” rating across more than 10,500 user reviews on Steam.

The big question now is whether the success of Robocop: Rogue City opens the door to more, in the form of an expansion or full sequel, or even just a New Game+ mode that some fans have been asking for. At the very least, Nacon’s happiness with the game’s sales would seem to make that outcome a real possibility.

Robocop: Rogue City is not part of Steam’s Autumn Sale (it just came out a couple weeks ago, after all) but if you’re waiting for a deal you can pick it up at a 33% discount on the Epic Games Store, thanks to those reusable coupons in Epic’s Black Friday sale.

Self-described gay furry hackers breach one of the biggest nuclear labs in the US, and demand it begin researching ‘IRL catgirls’

The Idaho National Laboratory (INL), the biggest nuclear lab in the US with thousands of employees, has been hacked by the group Sieged Security (stylised SiegeSec). The latter are self-proclaimed “gay furry hackers” who have posted a sample of the data obtained online, and are threatening to release huge amounts of employee data unless the lab makes a peculiar deal: “we’re willing to make a deal with INL,” says SiegeSec alongside the posted data, “if they research creating IRL catgirls we will take down this post.”

That is a reference to a long-running meme about furries wanting to create a race of sexy human-mutant cats, and yes none of those words are in the Bible. The data breach consists of employee addresses, Social Security numbers, birthdates, numbers, and “lots lots more!” The East Idaho News reported it contacted some of the employees in the initial leak, and verified that the information was accurate (thanks, The Register).

INL is based in Idaho Falls and employs around 6,100 people, and the scale of this thing is almost unimaginable: 890 square miles. 52 reactors have been built and operated by INL since 1949 and former director John Grossenbacher once said “the history of nuclear energy for peaceful application has principally been written in Idaho.” This place developed the first nuclear generator that could provide a usable amount of electricity.

Well. SiegeSec have hit some big targets in the past, including NATO, but this is almost certainly going to attract some men in suits. It should be said that the hack does not relate to the lab or its functioning, but is focused on “Human Resources services” and apparently involved a breach at an external vendor.

SiegeSec’s public posts about the hack begin “meow meow meow meow meow meow meow” before boasting about how much “yummy” and “crunchy” data it has. It added the group had messaged users via the Oracle software the lab has “showing our access” before making the proposition about catgirls.

Following the hack being made public, the group’s social media account commented “Many people ask ‘why?’ for INL breach. We are cats, intricacies such as ‘why’ do not concern us.” In response to one person expressing incredulity at the target, with INL involved in efforts to tackle climate change among other things, and asking whether the hackers were 12 years old, SiegeSec replied:

“INL is responsible for a lot more than climate change solutions, they were not targeted due to their involvement in climate change mitigation,” before going on to list its involvement in nuclear plants, control systems cybersecurity (!), vehicle testing, bioenergy, robotics, nuclear waste processing, and more.

None of those things seem especially egregious to me but then I’m not a furry hacker. The INL says an investigation into the breach is underway and and the feds are involved:

“Earlier this morning, Idaho National Laboratory determined that it was the target of a cybersecurity data breach […] INL has been in touch with federal law enforcement agencies, including the FBI and the Department of Homeland Security’s Cyber Security and Infrastructure Security Agency to investigate the extent of data impacted in this incident.”
