It’s a funny old business, the PC hardware game. Amongst the near constant stream of product announcements, releases and reviews, we happy few in the PC Gamer hardware team keep our noses to the ground all year long sniffing out the latest and greatest tech of all, and goodness there’s a lot of it.

In amongst this constant torrent of silicon, plastic, and rare-earth minerals it can be difficult for manufacturers to make their products stand out from the crowd. And many companies seem to find it necessary to cram as many specs, nouns and adjectives into their naming schemes in order to hit as many potential search terms as possible.

Oh, that was embarrassing. Not so much the guessing itself, but the way I managed to waste an entire row thanks to a typo. It’s my own fault—my brain was so excited it forgot to properly engage my fingers first, and I had to suffer the sight of a guess I already knew was wrong throw away a whole row. I won’t make that mistake again. Well, not tomorrow, anyway. Maybe.

When the bossman asked the PC Gamer hardware team to select our personal picks for hardware of the year, I thought about it, and then thought about it some more. As a reviewer that covers a lot of components, my shortlist came down to five items. The Intel Core i5 14600K, Nvidia RTX 4070, ASRock Z790 Taichi Lite and the Alienware OLED 34 AW3423DWF monitor. But in the end, I went with AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D.

At this point in time, there’s no such thing as the perfect CPU. The Core i9 14900K is very good, but it runs hot and consumes a lot of power. The Core i5 14600K is also an excellent chip, but it’s not revolutionary compared to the Core i5 of 12600K and 13600K fame. AMD’s higher core count chips are decent enough, but the Ryzen 9 7950X3D doesn’t do enough over the Ryzen 7 7800X3D for me to consider it. And it’s expensive. That leaves AMD’s 7800X3D on its own. I chose it because it’s a gaming chip first and foremost, and unlike most gaming oriented hardware, it’s not exorbitantly priced.

Need some help with Wordle today? Don’t worry if you’re on your last row with not enough green letters for comfort, the answer to today’s puzzle is right here. You’ll also find a great selection of general tips on this page, as well as a clue for the December 30 (924) Wordle if you’d just like a bit of help.

I was in danger of overcomplicating today’s Wordle, wasting time and precious guesses searching for something that wasn’t there and that I didn’t need in any case. Somehow I managed to catch myself before I got too far into the letter-weeds this time, although it’s annoying to know I could’ve reached today’s answer a little earlier if I hadn’t been so eager to give my keyboard a workout.

The modernized and remade PC version of tactical shoot ’em up R-Type Tactics 1 and 2 is clearly not coming this year as previously listed. Developer Granzella has announced that R-Type Tactics I – II Cosmos is in fact coming in fall 2024, instead, during a recent livestream.

Kind of a shame, because we had it on our lists of both Strategy RPGs and games to look forward to more generally for this year, not least of all because they’re both PSP games that are a lot of work to get your hands on nowadays. The release of R-Type Tactics 2 will be the game’s debut outside of Japan.

Call us pedantic, over-critical, picky, fussy, whatever. The simple truth is that everyone at PC Gamer not only has very high standards, but also masses of experience in a host of different fields. So when it comes to reviewing hardware, every piece of kit that passes through our hands gets thoroughly scrutinized.

We only give the highest review scores to products that actually meet or exceed those standards and over the whole of 2023, a mere 25 were awarded with a review score of 90% or more.

Seeing just the one yellow letter turn up on my first go didn’t exactly work wonders for my confidence, so it’s a good thing for me my follow-up attempt at finding today’s answer turned my Wordle game around in a flash. Is there any happier sight than a solid line of green letters on a Friday morning? I think not.

Extraction shooter Escape from Tarkov dropped a big new update this week, bringing a new urban area, new weapons, a new boss, and a rework of the shoreline area. The big new region is Ground Zero, a major downtown filled with skyscrapers that also includes urban infrastructure like “banks, cafes, restaurants, stores, pharmacies, and so on.”

Catering directly to the firearm enthusiasts that make up its core fanbase, Tarkov also included a nice new weapon to tinker with. Alongside other additions is the SIG MCX SPEAR, a more widely-available “civilian” version of the US Army’s new XM7 assault rifle.

One action roguelike is surging to the top of the Steam charts this holiday week courtesy of an update, with little room-based dungeon crawler Tiny Rogues holding strong player numbers for an indie after the release of its Heaven & Hell update added oodles of new stuff. Released late last year, Tiny Rogues is an action roguelike that punts you from room to room dodging nasty traps and enemy attacks while building up a set of unique equipment and abilities that synergize well enough to get you through 10 dungeon floors and their nasty bosses.

Over the holidays Tiny Rogues has now reached nearly twice its all-team peak concurrent players, per SteamDB. It’s the kind of climb we sometimes see before a game gets truly, explosively popular—though even without sudden viral growth this one’s on a steady upward trend.
