I do like a NetherRealm fighting game story mode, and the upcoming expansion for Mortal Kombat 1, Khaos Reigns, is adding to the narrative with the return of Havik—though this time, a Havik from an alternate timeline. I don’t expect to understand what’s going on, but I do expect to see a bunch of gratuitous slow-motion martial arts and eviscerations, and that’s always a good time.
The Khaos Reigns expansion also comes with Kombat Pack 2, adding several more fighters. Some are reimagined versions of returning characters seen in the story mode: Noob Saibot, Cyrax, and Sektor. It also comes with three crossover guest fighters: Conan the Barbarian (based on the version played by Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movies), Ghostface from the Scream series, and the T-1000 from Terminator 2.
It’s an odd bunch of guest stars, but then they always are. I can’t get the idea of Ghostface meeting Conan out of my head. That interaction would make for some baffling taunts. “What’s your favorite scary movie?” “To crush your enemies, see them driven before you, and hear the lamentation of their women.”
At the same time as Khaos Reigns comes out, Mortal Kombat 1 is getting a free update that brings back animalities. These variant fatalities involve characters transforming into animals before ripping apart their opponents, so if you’ve ever wanted to see a gorilla grab someone’s jaws and rip their face open, now’s your chance.
The Khaos Reigns expansion comes out on September 24 on Steam and the Epic Games Store, with the Kombat Pack 2 as part of the bundle (it won’t be available separately). We’ll see if this helps to turn things around for Mortal Kombat 1, which our reviewer called “A solid but oddly soulless entry that fails to commit to being a series reboot.”

Wordle help: 3 tips for beating Wordle every day
Anyone can pick up and play Wordle, but if you want to do it well and make all of your guesses count, these quick tips will help get you started on your Wordle winning streak:
Choose an opener with a balanced mix of unique vowels and consonants.
The answer may contain the same letter, multiple times.
Try not to use guesses that contain letters you’ve already eliminated.
Thankfully, there’s no time limit beyond ensuring it’s done by midnight. So there’s no reason not to treat the game like a casual newspaper crossword and come back to it later if you’re coming up blank. Sometimes stepping away for a while means you can come back with a fresh perspective.

Wordle gives you six rows of five boxes each day, and you’ll need to work out which secret five-letter word is hiding inside them to keep up your winning streak.
You should start with a strong word like ARISE, or any other word that contains a good mix of common consonants and multiple vowels. You’ll also want to avoid starting words with repeating letters, as you’re wasting the chance to potentially eliminate or confirm an extra letter. Once you hit Enter, you’ll see which ones you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.
You’ll want your next guess to compliment the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you might have missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. After that, it’s simply a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the correct word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words and don’t forget letters can repeat too (eg: BOOKS).

Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle, as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. While the 2024 Player’s Handbook isn’t due out until September 17, early copies will be available at Gen Con in August, so expect the rules to be out in the wild soon. Wizards of the Coast has been continuing to detail the book’s contents in the meantime, recently showing the 10 playable species it will include, and now explaining how the new backgrounds and origin feats will work.
“The 2024 Player’s Handbook has changed the order you move through while crafting your characters”, it explains. “Think of it as stepping backward in time through your character’s history. You start with where your character is at the beginning of your game, your class, then look at the road that led them to this heroic point, your background, and finally, look at how you began your life with your species.”
Previously, backgrounds were a nice way to add a bit of flavor to a character—maybe your paladin is a reformed criminal, or used to be a hermit—but their mechanical impact was slight and easily overlooked. Now, backgrounds will not only be a source of proficiencies and starting equipment, but also determine the bonuses to your ability scores. Each background gives a choice of three characteristics to improve, and you can choose one to boost by two points and another to boost by one.
Backgrounds also determine your origin feat, which is a free, basic version of the feats most characters don’t get until level four. Giving away a free feat at level one is a fairly common house rule to make characters more distinct, so it’s nice to see it baked into the core rules like this. Origin feats include Lucky, which gives you a number of luck points you can use to gain advantage or give an opponent disadvantage, or Magic Initiate, which lets you start out with a handful of basic spells.
Regular feats still exist, and two other varieties of beneficial ability have been folded into the feat category as well. Fighting Styles, which can be earned by some classes when they level up, and Epic Boons, earned at level 19, also count as feats now.
A lot of these rules have been carried over, with tweaks, from playtests. I used the playtest version of Origin Feats in a Spelljammer campaign I ran last year and they worked just fine, with the Lucky feat being a popular choice. I expect the usual amount of internet fussbudgeting over the finer points of course, and the revised ranger in particular has already begun copping a lot of flak.

The internet was abuzz about metal band Gojira’s Olympics opening ceremony performance suspended high on the walls of a French Chateau, but as reported by Eurogamer, the celebration also featured an equally surreal bit of videogame marketing woven through the whole shebang: A masked torchbearer dressed like Arno from Assassin’s Creed Unity, parkouring about with the blessings of franchise creator Ubisoft.
Featured on NBC coverage of the ceremony, the Arno-alike engaged in some impressive acrobatics on the rooftops of Paris while carrying the torch, including ziplining across the Seine and cutting a few promos for the live broadcast. He was a bit like an opening ceremony Forrest Gump, or perhaps more akin to a cosplay convention Deadpool, flitting in and out of a Les Miserables production, the aforementioned Gojira show, and a whimsical Dionysean drag river cruise. I’m glad they’re having fun over there.
Was Arno from Assassinâs Creed the masked torchbearer at the Olympic Opening Ceremony? | Paris 2024 – YouTube
There wasn’t a ton of attention called to this guy being Arno from Assassin’s Creed—or at least Arno-adjacent, Arno-reminiscent—in the English broadcast. That’s probably for the best: A little “Assassin’s Creed Shadows, Nothing Is True, Everything Is Permitted This Fall!” action might have been a mismatch for the Olympics’ intended celebration of sportsmanship and common humanity. At the same time, if you tuned into the broadcast at the wrong time, you could be forgiven for thinking this was some other masked Parisian parkourist.
All jokes aside, this is a pretty huge stage for any videogame to feature in, particularly a ten year-old installment of a long-running franchise. A post on X, “The Everything App” from Ubisoft before the ceremony seems to confirm this was an official collaboration between the company and event organizers.
Unity was the first Assassin’s Creed to be set in France, and while it had notable technical issues at launch, now seems fondly remembered for its incredibly detailed rendition of 18th century Paris, as well as for being one of the last hurrahs of “classic” Assassin’s Creed before its RPG turn with Origins. It also makes sense for Ubisoft, a major French company, to feature in the Paris Olympic games.

With the launch of The Sims 4 Lovestruck expansion it’s easier than ever to find love. Almost too easy, really, as in the case of a strange phone call you may receive inviting you to the Beso Rápido in Ciudad Enamorada. A local Sim may call you claiming to be a very busy CEO looking to quickly meet up while they’re in town and how can you turn down finding out what that’s about?
There’s a bit of urgency to it, even, because the phone call inviting you to the covert meetup will give your Sim a “playful” moodlet called “Meeting a Wealthy Weirdo” that only lasts for 24 hours. Don’t get confused and try to travel with your Sim to another lot though. You’ll actually be looking for an interactable building.
Where is the Beso Rápido Motel location?
Beso Rapido doesn’t have its own icon but it’s right next the lounge marked by a microphone. (Image credit: Electronic Arts)
The Beso Rápido motel is next to the lounge in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood of Ciudad Enamorada, the world added with the Lovestruck expansion. Unlike the gym and night club, the motel isn’t actually a public lot you can travel to. Scroll around the neighborhood and find the blue building with yellow windows and a neon sign. It’s right between Laguna Del Abrazo and the starter house lot Casita Del Amor.
If your Sim isn’t currently in the Vista Hermosa neighborhood, they’ll need to travel there first. Pull up their phone and select Travel > Travel and head to the Laguna Del Abrazo lounge. Once they arrive, Beso Rápido is right across the street.
If you’re looking to complete the quest, click on the motel with the Sim who’s been invited and select “Meet the Wealthy Weirdo.” You’ll either get some rewards for your Sim’s inventory or just another playful moodlet called “Weird Meeting” that says “Who would have thought someone that age would still be into Voidcritters?” with no reward. Personally, I got stiffed on rewards the only time I got the invite.
What else can you do at Beso Rápido?
You don’t have to wait for an invite from a stranger to visit the discreet love motel in Vista Hermosa. You can visit any time you like to:
Rent a room to sleep (20 simoleons)
Rent a room to WooHoo with another Sim who’s with you (40 simoleons)
Rent a room to try for baby with another Sim who’s with you (40 simoleons)
If you’re in the neighborhood on a date, you can also get to the motel as an interaction by selecting Romance > Physical Intimacy > Ask to WooHoo in Motel. That too will cost 40 simoleons.

Five years after Valve kicked off the first Steam Game Festival—now known as Steam Next Fest—the company is making changes to how it handles demos. In short, it’s making them less of a chore to sniff out and deal with in your library.
In a blog post released yesterday, Valve announced that it was making changes to how it handles its appetisers based on “trends in feedback from both developers and players about the process and functionality.”
First up, adding a demo to your Steam library no longer means having to immediately install it (or, in my case at least, having to close the tab that pops up asking you to install Steam after you hit the play button to get the demo). Like any of Steam’s legion of free-to-play games, demos now have a handy “Add to Library” button to tuck them away in your games list without an immediate prompt to install. You can also now install demos for games you already own, if you just want the narcotic rush of a game’s most audience-enticing parts.
Beyond the Add to Library button, demos also behave more like free games in that they can now have their own distinct store pages. Up to now, demos were restricted to a dinky green demo box on the page for the full game they’re attached to. Well, no more. Now devs can create whole new pages “to better describe the contents of the demo, add separate screenshots, upload a trailer, and specify supported features.” That also means demos will be subject to their own distinct user reviews and scores, so long as they have their own full page.
They don’t have to have one, though. Some demos will still just hang out as an additional option on the full game’s page if devs don’t feel the need for a whole new one, with no distinct user review score.
But that’s not all, folks. Demos will now show up on Steam’s front page under charts like “New and trending” or relevant tag and category pages. Valve says it’s also “made some changes to the thresholds for free products to appear in those sections to better balance them with paid products.”
And finally, you can get Steam to send you notifications if demos become available for games on your wishlist, or from devs you follow. So maybe expect your inbox to pop off come October 14, when the next Steam Next Fest begins.
Keep up to date with the most important stories and the best deals, as picked by the PC Gamer team.
Oh, and Valve also explains to interested onlookers just what the strange circular icon is on all Steam’s demos. Turns out it’s “from the days when demos were commonly distributed through the post office, contained in a bound package of game journalism printed on dead trees and imprinted on circular media known as Compact Discs.” I am older than sand.
Anyway, they all sound like smart changes to me, and my only real question is how it took this long for some of them to come into effect. Maybe it’s just because Valve has so (relatively) few people working for it, or maybe the company just works in mysterious ways. You know, like how it only introduced the option to hide games from your Steam friends a cool six years after it started selling literal pornography. Things work differently in those rolly-desk, laissez-faire offices.

Wordle help: 3 tips for beating Wordle every day
A good starting word can be the difference between victory and defeat with the daily puzzle, but once you’ve got the basics, it’s much easier to nail down those Wordle wins. And as there’s nothing quite like a small victory to set you up for the rest of the day, here are a few tips to help set you on the right path:
A good opening guess should contain a mix of unique consonants and vowels.
Narrow down the pool of letters quickly with a tactical second guess.
Watch out for letters appearing more than once in the answer.
There’s no racing against the clock with Wordle so you don’t need to rush for the answer. Treating the game like a casual newspaper crossword can be a good tactic; that way, you can come back to it later if you’re coming up blank. Stepping away for a while might mean the difference between a win and a line of grey squares.

It’s bad enough that we have apps launching our apps. While I tolerate Steam purely as a matter of convenience, every additional layer of software between me and the executable I’m seeking is a distance I’m forced to further stray from God’s light. But a launcher launching another launcher? That’s a crime against human decency, and no perpetrator is worse than the EA app.
Luckily, according to a tweet from BioWare, Dragon Age: The Veilguard won’t require the EA app to launch on Steam. “We’ll be Steam native – meaning the EA App will not be required to play the game,” it says. The curse is finally loosening.
We’re making great progress towards our fall launch date, and can confirm early that #DragonAge: The Veilguard is going all-in on @Steam features!⚔️We’re verified on Steam Deck.⚔️We’ll be Steam native – meaning the EA App will not be required to play the game.Details on…July 25, 2024
I don’t remember much about Origin except the primal revulsion that the EA app’s predecessor evoked by appearing unbidden when I asked Steam to fire up an EA game—kind of like when you’re opening the fridge for some leftovers you’re excited to get back to, and you’re met with a subtle whiff that tells you there’s something in there you’d be better off without. The EA app, meanwhile, is a vivid, waking terror.
Since the EA app replaced Origin in 2022, there’s not a single EA game I’ve tried to play that it hasn’t bungled in one way or another. There was a recent dark chapter in my life where I spent three hours repeatedly reinstalling the app just so I could play Battlefront 2. It was such a harrowing experience that when I got the urge to revisit Titanfall 2 a few months later, I was so thoroughly disheartened on seeing the EA app appear that I just turned my PC off and left the house.
The world is gentler outside. There are no EA apps beneath the trees.
By leaving the EA app behind, maybe The Veilguard is a sign of a kinder future where publishers understand that their additional layers of launchers are only ever worsening the user experience. Hopefully Ubisoft is paying attention. Ubisoft Connect isn’t without its sins.
