I thought it odd when Summer Games Done Quick announced today that access to a Ken Griffey Jr. Presents Major League Baseball speedrun will be restricted in order to ensure the comfort of the speedrunner. Performing under pressure, after all, is a big part of the whole deal, and nothing adds pressure to literally any task like doing it while other people are watching.
The announcement didn’t provide much clarity. “Heads up, SGDQ2024 Attendees!” Games Done Quick tweeted. “We’ll be closing our stream room doors at the start of tonight’s ‘Ken Griffey Jr. – Win a Game’ run by @JSR2gamers & PB, and will NOT allow further entry until the run has ended. Please plan ahead if you intend to watch in-person. Thank you!
“This decision is to provide the most comfortable environment for PB in a live environment. Our staff will address the audience in the room prior to the run’s start about what to expect and follow.”
Okay, yes, the dog emoji probably should have clued me in.(Image credit: Games Done Quick (Twitter))
“Who is this PB guy?” I wondered. “Why do they deserve this kind of special consideration?” My brain slowly ticked over, to no avail; finally, at a loss, I went to Googleâand suddenly it all came back.
PB is Peanut Butter, and Peanut Butter is a dogâspecifically, a Shiba Inu who not only appeared at Awesome Games Done Quick in January but actually set a record for speedrunning the 1985 NES platformer Gyromite. And if you don’t believe me, head over to speedrun.com and check the books.
Peanut Butter works in partnership with speedrunner and streamer JSR, who guides PB through the runsâalthough as we noted when the Gyromite record was set, “credit really does belong to his very good boy for pressing the right buttons exactly when needed.”
This won’t be Peanut Butter’s first crack at Griffey: He earned a place on the speedrun leaderboard for that game back in January. So yes, I now live in a world where a dog holds two more speedrunning records than I do.

The culprit was the Lightning Perfume Bottle’s standard moveset, which creates a series of individual explosions: combining this with the Rolling Sparks Ash of War and aiming at the ground had the unintended effect of making every explosion detonate instantly and on top of one another, resulting in unholy damage numbers that could obliterate the final boss in 13 seconds. This also worked with the Frenzyflame perfume bottle. Well FromSoftware nose what you’ve all been up to, and today’s new patch nerfs that sweet smell of success into the ground.
After the patch, aiming the perfume combo at the ground will result in just a single weedy little explosion. This wasn’t the only dialling back on a tool with unexpected behaviours: players have been using the spiky shields to sleepwalk through boss fights, thanks to a glitch that meant thrusting into attacks both defended you and didn’t use up stamina like it should have. Alas, no more.
Those are the most extreme nerfs, but there are also tweaks to the Bloodfiend’s Arm, which was scaling with arcane more than intended, while the Carian Sorcery Sword has had its base damage reduced but its Int scaling increased. There’s also one PvP specific nerf: “Decreased the damage and damage animation of the shearing vacuum effect of the ‘Swift Slash‘ Skill.”
Some players have been having issues with Erdtree’s performance, and this patch addresses some of the problems, though not all. It also, rather cheekily, puts the blame on third party mouse software and players’ own ray tracing settings. The rest of the patch notes are minor tweaks and bugfixes, and can be read in full here. They contain one especially magnificent line:
“Fixed a bug where the unblockable bite attack of the Golden Hippopotamus boss would connect with players more easily than intended.”
The poor Golden Hippopotamus! The patch is live now, and will be required to use the game’s online features. I haven’t even got close to the end of Erdtree yet, but the game’s large community has torn it apart in the weeks since launch: the final boss is apparently a total nightmare, but some maniacs are already dancing through one of FromSoft’s biggest challenges without so much as a scratch.Â

The best Billy build in Zenless Zone Zero is a pretty straightforward one, centred around buffing the gun-toting cyborg’s crits and ability to proc the powerful physical anomaly, Assault. He might not be the game’s greatest attack character, but physical is a very strong attribute for damage-dealers, and best of all, Billy is free when you start the game.
If you pre-registered and got Corin free, too, but aren’t a big fan of her chainsaw, Billy might serve you better. He’s got a pretty unique playstyle among other agents, focusing as he does on blasting foes at range and hitting lots of enemies at once with his chain and dash attacks.Â
His additional ability that buffs his ultimate damage by 50% for every chain attack he performs is also a pretty fun feature, letting you build towards a supercharged ultimate. That said, here’s my best ZZZ Billy build, plus what materials you’ll need to level him.
ZZZ best Billy build
Billy is one of the simplest characters in ZZZ; a physical attack agent who focuses on dealing with enemies at range. His two most notable features are that he gains increased damage in the Crouching Shot stanceâwhich he’ll hop back into after his initial attackâand provided you keep inputting attacks he’ll stay in that stance blasting at an enemy.Â
His additional ability also means he gains 50% increased ultimate damage whenever he performs a chain attack, stacking twice. The best Billy build focuses around buffing his crits and his anomaly mastery so he can trigger Assault more easily.
W-Engine: Starlight Engine Replica or The Brimstone
The best W-Engine for Billy is definitely the A-tier Starlight Engine Replica. This increases physical damage by 36% for eight seconds when you hit an enemy at least six meters away with a basic attack or dash attack. If you’re playing Billy right, i.e as a ranged character, this buff should be very easy to keep active.
There’s only one S-tier W-Engine that suits Billy right now, and that’s The Brimstone. This engine increases attack by 3.5% for eight seconds when you hit enemies with a basic attack, dash attack, or dodge attack, stacking up to eight times. Considering how many opponents Billy can hit at once, this buff should be easy to keep maxed out, but personally I prefer the A-tier option for Billy.
Drive Discs: Fanged Metal (four-pieces equipped), Woodpecker Electro (two-pieces equipped)
In terms of Drive Discs, the physical-focused set, Fanged Metal, is a great choice for Billy. Two-pieces means 10% increased physical damage, while four-pieces buffs damage by 35% whenever a party member inflicts the physical anomaly Assault. For your other two, I recommend Woodpecker Electro for the 8% crit rate buff it provides so it’ll be easier for Billy to land crits.
You can get Fanged Metal and Woodpecker Electro from the Fist and Gun, plus Tower and Cannon Cleanup activities respectively. You can also grab them from the Bardic Needle store on Sixth Street. Both of these unlock after you complete the Belobog commission as part of the main story.
In terms of base stats on the Drive Discs, I recommend:
Drive Disc 4: Crit damage
Drive Disc 5: Physical damage boost
Drive Disc 6: Anomaly mastery
The first two will work to increase Billy’s damage, while anomaly mastery will speed up how quickly he can apply Assault to enemies, dealing a big chunk of damage when he does.
For random stats, you should look to build Billy’s crit damage and then crit rateâthe second is less of a priority since he gets it through his core skill enhancement and the Woodpecker Electro set. I’d then focus on attack, and possibly some anomaly proficiency if you can fit it, since this will buff the damage that Billy deals when he procs Assault.
ZZZ Billy promotion materials
Here’s what you’ll need to level up Billy in Zenless Zone Zero:
Offense Certification Seals (Basic, Advanced, and Ruler)
Investigator Logs
You can get Offense Certification Seals via the Combat Simulation activity that unlocks via the main story. You’ll want to select Agent Promotion and then Attack Drill for Billy. Investigator Logs also come from here; simply select Basic Material and then Investigation Specialization instead.Â
You’ll also need to raise your Inter-Knot reputation to gain access to higher character levels. Once you progress far enough, you can tweak what enemies you fight in Combat Simulation to create a custom reward set that’ll get you exactly what you want.

In one of the more bewildering sentences I’ve ever written for this website, a man in Warwickshire, UK has been jailed after approaching police officers while wielding a Master Sword.
Anthony Bray, of Nuneaton, has been sent down for four months for “possession of a bladed article in public,” per a statement from Warwickshire police (via Wario64). Per the cops, Bray “approached officers with the item in his hand visible,” in Nuneaton town centre, “at which point he was arrested as he was carrying a bladed article.”
That “bladed article” was, in fact, the sword that seals the darkness: Link’s Master Sword from the Legend of Zelda series. A sheathed six-inch blade that could be drawn at the press of a button, Bray’s claim that the gadget was just a fidget toy didn’t hold much water with the badges, who “tried to explain to Bray that, despite its intended purpose, it was in fact a sharply pointed item which could be used as a weapon and might put others in fear of it being used against them.”
Bray was charged on June 28 at Leamington Spa Magistrates Court, where he was sentenced to four months in prison and a victims’ surcharge of ÂŁ154 (around $200).
The West Midlands, of which Nuneaton is part, has the highest knife crime rate in England and Wales, which might explain why police weren’t willing to make an exception for Bray’s Master Sword. Even so, the police statement seems to admonish Bray for making his possession of the item so obvious rather than having the blade at all.Â
“We take a zero tolerance to bladed articles in public, and Bray has fallen afoul of this,” said Sergeant Spellman of the police’s Patrol Investigations Unit, “It is possible to find fidget toys that arenât six-inch blades. It is possible not to walk down the street holding them out in front of you. With a bit more self-awareness, Bray could have avoided contact with us completely.”

Wordle gives you six rows of five boxes each day, and it’s your job to work out which five-letter word is hiding by eliminating or confirming the letters it contains.
Your second go should compliment the starting word, using another “good” guess to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. Â After that, it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the right word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words (so no filling the boxes with EEEEE to see if there’s an E). Don’t forget letters can repeat too (ex: BOOKS).Â

Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle, as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle, refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.Â
One of Elden Ring’s greatest joys is the freedom it provides for exploring different philosophies of combat. Maybe you favor the tried-and-true strategy of hitting things with extremely large swords. Maybe you delight in the arts of high wizardry, measured in laser beams and hurled boulders. The options are endlessâbut they’re also wrong. Thanks to the new thrusting shields from Shadow of the Erdtree, players are discovering that they’ve been wasting their time finding the best builds for blood loss or Frenzied Flame incantations. Instead, they should’ve been asking one question: What if I was attacking while I was blocking?
Shadow of the Erdtree introduced two thrusting shields, a new weapon type based on a simple concept: blocking things is great, but blocking things would be better if it didn’t keep you from hitting things. Presumably aided by the guidance of some divine benefactor, FromSoft designed the ultimate weapon to finally answer that age-old conundrumâby which I mean they made  shields what got pointy bits on them so you can poke guys while you’re blocking their hits.Â
If you wield a thrusting shield two-handed, you’re able to attack while holding the block button, allowing you to safely spam light attacks and only suffer little bits of chip damage in exchange. The two thrusting shields, both of which are located in the DLC’s Shadow Keep dungeon, can be freely modified to suit your damage type and scaling tastes. Better still, they pick up extra counterattack damage from the Spear Talisman, and because you’ll be two-handing them, they benefit from the Two-Handed Sword Talisman‘s damage boost, too
As players on the Elden Ring subreddit have noticed, the thrusting shields are extremely potentâtoo potent, perhaps, particularly when you’ve got some stamina regen and guard-improving effects in play. Because it allows attacking without risk or concern, players are claiming that the weapon type trivializes boss fights, including some of the harder bosses of the notoriously-difficult DLC. Â “Being able to just spam attacks and tank through everything only taking chip damage is insane,” redditor Drstrangelove899 said, calling the weapons “absolutely busted.”
Busted might be right; Tarnished who’ve taken the thrusting shields for a spin have noticed that they’re conspicuously lenient on stamina drain. A thrusting shield testing video from YouTuber mmlubergames demonstrates that attacks blocked conventionally with a thrusting shield knock the expected chunks off your stamina bar, but attacks blocked while attacking with the safety poke only shave off tiny slivers. It’s a huge disparity that lets someone wielding a thrusting shield functionally ignore almost every attack coming their way, both in PvE and PvP. I’m inclined to agree with the assessment of Japanese Twitter user @pirochanbanzai, who posted a video showing how simple thrusting shields make Rellana’s fight with the Google-translated caption “Nerf inevitable.”Â
Of course, I can only speculate whether thrusting shields are due for a healthy adjustment. If a tricky boss has you tempted to try a thrusting shield for yourself, though, you might want to do it sooner than later.Â

We may never see a lower price for the Samsung Odyssey OLED G9 than what I caught it going for over the weekend, and that’s because it appears to have been a complete accident. Samsung discounted its ultrawide 49-inch OLED gaming monitor by ÂŁ1,400âbringing it down to just ÂŁ199.
To put that into perspective, this is a brand new gaming monitor that we scored 90% in our recent G9 OLED review. Though we looked at the cheaper model, the G93SC. The one discounted over the weekend was the version with smart TV functionality built-in, the G95SC. We thought that smart functionality pretty needless on a gaming monitor presumably connected to a fully-functioning gaming PC and yet I wouldn’t say no to it at that price.
Unfortunately, I didn’t reach the screen in time to secure one for myself. I caught wind of the offer on TikTok, through a video of a user claiming to have scored an order in time via Samsung’s eBay page, which also had a similar deal runningâit must be an automated system.Â
By the time I had reached the page, it had already sold out.
The low price was still listed on the sold out product, however. I snapped a few screenshots before the price shot back up. The monitor is still sold out on Samsung right now.
That sort of discount is one way to move stock fast. Though I very much doubt Samsung intended to discount its brand new OLED screen to little more than a 1080p panel. As someone that previously managed an ecommerce website, I can admit to cocking up a product’s price on a handful of occasions, only to realise my mistake when the first order rolls in. The stakes were pretty smallâa mug worth ÂŁ7.99 discounted to ÂŁ6.99 didn’t exactly break the bank.
Samsung, on the other hand, just lost out on over a thousand pounds sterling for every monitor sold at this price. That may have only been a handful but that’s still a lot of cash. Hey, don’t feel bad for Samsung, it’s worth billions. But maybe feel bad for the person that has to admit it was their fault.

For what it’s worth, while we won’t see a deal anywhere close to this (though fingers crossed), there will be some cheap gaming monitor deals for Prime Day over the next few weeks. Don’t get your hopes up for ÂŁ1,400 off, though.

It’s a hectic time for those in the orbit of Guy Beahm, the streamer better known as Dr Disrespect who last week admitted to being banned from Twitch for inappropriately messaging a minor.
Friends, brands, and a professional football team have cut ties with the streamer, though the separation most personal to Beahm was his firing from Midnight Society, the game studio he co-founded in 2021. For almost three years Beahm was the face of Midnight Society and its debut game Deadrop, a “vertical extraction shooter.”
“Face” is actually an understatement: Deadrop wasn’t just Dr Disrespect’s game, it was the Dr Disrespect game. The shooter’s art style matches Beahm’s dark cyberpunk stream graphics and merchandise. Deadrop’s core extraction mode was inspired by Beahm’s love of Escape From Tarkov. The Deadrop assault rifle has two firing modes: “Yaya” and “Yayayaya,” a reference to the disgraced streamer’s catchphrase.
In the week since Beahm’s firing Midnight Society has made efforts to scrub the Doc from its official channelsâBeahm is no longer mentioned in the studio’s Twitter bio and its About Us page has gone offline. Only scarce mentions of the streamer remain in its FAQ and branding guidelines. Midnight Society might never fully disentangle itself from its co-founder, though even if it could, I seriously question what Deadrop is without its load-bearing hype man. Because I can tell you what Deadrop is not right now: a good, or even particularly promising game.
Day zero
Deadrop is not a normal videogame. That’s the way the Midnight Society founding quartet of Beahm, Robert Bowling (former Call of Duty creative lead), Quinn DelHoyo (former Halo Infinite designer), and entrepreneur Sumit Gupta like to talk about Deadropâas a never-before-seen project that “turns tables upside down” on the game industry. At the center of that mission is what the studio has coined its “Day Zero” development, where early adopters vote on features and give feedback.
Months before Deadrop had a name or we even knew what kind of game it was, Midnight Society started selling $50 Founders Passes, NFTs that granted owners unique, procedurally generated Midnight Society avatars usable in-game.
It didn’t take long for Midnight Society to demonstrate why developers usually wait a few years to put their games in front of players.
The studio’s embracing of NFTs and decentralization, as trendy as it was in 2021, alienated PC gamers already exasperated by Web3 startups proclaiming that the future of gaming is a stock market. The decision also instantly associated Deadrop with the shallow, cynical, and scam-prone Web3 gaming space. But those detractions were a blip against the huge audience of eager Beahm supporters. All 10,000 Founder Passes sold out shortly after going on sale. That $50 buy-in got them a digital trinket they could sell later, but the real prize was access to future Deadrop test builds called “Snapshots,” Midnight Society’s other self-proclaimed development innovation.

Deadrop has been in pre-alpha for two years. Every map looks like this. (Image credit: Midnight Society)
Deadrop is essentially an early access game like any other, but with earlier access, and a promise to deliver a new playable Snapshot every six weeks. I was one of the skeptics who questioned how Midnight Society would pull off releasing a new build of Deadrop every 42 days when it was starting from scratch. What could a studio even accomplish at that pace?
It didn’t take long for Midnight Society to demonstrate why developers usually wait a few years to put their games in front of players. The much-hyped Snapshot 1, released in July 2022, turned out to have three rooms, firing ranges, and a single gun. Midnight Society called it an experience, but it was a tech demo at best. It wouldn’t be until Snapshot 2 in September, which missed its six-week deadline by two weeks, that Deadrop would get the basis of its multiplayer extraction mode, a map, and a few other weapons. After the first few snapshots, Midnight Society started selling non-NFT access to the game for $25. That’s the version I bought.
Deadrop is a state of mind
From a development standpoint, each snapshot served its function as a playable proof of concept, but it was clear from all the placeholder assets, buggy animations, and generally poor performance that Deadrop was years from becoming a game people would actually like to play.
That’s not the impression you’d get from watching content creators play Deadrop, most of whom are proud Founders Pass holders. Pretty much everything about Deadrop is impressive to its earliest adopters: its stiff movement, small weapon variety, squishy gun sounds, barebones animations, graybox maps, and its nonexistent progression systems.Â
This is what I find so fascinating about Deadrop: Midnight Society has a group of followers who staunchly believe Deadop will be a massive hit and aren’t especially critical about what it is right now.
Midnight Society has a group of followers who staunchly believe Deadop will be a massive hit and aren’t especially critical about what it is right now.
It’s a special kind of reality-distorting spell that influencers cast over their audiencesâthe same magic that manifested Logan Paul’s energy drink Prime, which tastes like expired Gatorade, into a bestsellerâthat can convince crowds of fans that something with no objective merit is actually a big deal. If Midnight Society had never been associated with a major streamer and had released Deadrop into early access on Steam in its current form, it would’ve quickly earned a ‘Mostly Negative’ tag and been dismissed as random store fodder.
Part of the Deadrop magic has been effective theater. Midnight Society has created a culture of exclusivity through its liberal use of proper nouns, like “Day Zero Community,” “VES,” and “The Existence.” Players who got in early aren’t just players, they’re “Variants.” Lower-tier members of the community are “Claws.”Â
Throughout 2022 and 2023, Midnight Society put on huge live events from Los Angeles, Texas, and Las Vegas to celebrate Snapshot releases. It’s strange to watch Beahm, Bowling, and DelHoyo talk about standard FPS features like a (still unfinished) map, gun skins, and voice chat with the pomp and bravado of a Call of Duty unveiling. It’s even stranger to watch a live crowd of hundreds pump their fists at an epic sizzle reel of textureless maps and hitchy gunfights. The unearned hype of everything Deadrop is enough to briefly convince you that we live in a topsy-turvy world where games don’t need to be even passably good before they’re crowned the next big thing.
But having played Deadrop and kept an eye on its community for a few years now, it’s clear all that glitz and gusto has not amounted to active interest in Deadrop’s current form. Because yes, despite its pre-alpha status, Deadrop is still a $15 game you can buy right nowâthough I don’t recommend it, since nobody else is playing.
In early 2024, a few months after its big Snapshot 7 reveal event in Las Vegas, Midnight Society unceremoniously announced via its blog that 2024 would be a quiet year for Deadrop.
“We are going behind the curtain, which means we will be doing fewer major releases (like Snapshots) and focusing on the heavy lifting required to bring Deadrop to the finish line,” the update read.
That finish line is another “early access” release, presumably different from the one it’s already selling, on consoles and PC. It was an awkward read, considering Midnight Society was going back on its promise of making the community a constant participant with six-week Snapshots, but reading between the lines, I think most fans understood it was the best decision for actually finishing the game. The update did include a promise to still have “public releases” throughout 2024, but in the six months since, this hasn’t happened. After talk of “redefining the industry” with a bold Day Zero strategy, today’s Midnight Society operates like any other game studio.

Deadrop, meanwhile, is in stasis. The version for sale today is still Snapshot 7, released in October 2023, and despite my best efforts this past week, I haven’t gotten into a match. The best I’ve managed is loading up an empty map and shooting some guns. Deadrop’s guns are probably its best quality, but that’s not saying much. They’re generic, sound bad, and dip my framerate every time I shoot, but at least they’re snappy.
As I wandered around one of Deadrop’s big tower maps and imagined what it would be like with a dozen more people in the lobby, I started to question the point of Deadrop’s signature verticality. Skyboxes full of megastructures do make for potentially pretty maps, but as far as I can tell, “vertical extraction shooter” basically means “Tarkov with a lot of elevators.” The whole goal of the extraction mode is to reach the top of the tower, but since you don’t have a jetpack or flying car, you have to go up the old fashioned way. Maybe it’s just me, but I hate constantly climbing stairs, watching a ladder climbing animation, or holding E to activate an elevator. I don’t think other shooters avoid this level of verticality because it’s just too innovativeâit’s to ensure getting around isn’t a pain in the neck.

Deadrop after Doc
I’ve given up trying to play Deadrop in recent days, as have lots of fans, by the look of things. It’s been a dour few weeks to lurk in the Midnight Society Discord. Members closely followed the Dr Disrespect saga as it unfolded, with some immediately attempting to justify Beahm’s behavior and others doubting they’d be able to support Midnight Society if the Doc stuck around.
The chat reached a fever pitch when Beahm was ousted on June 24. Almost immediately, dozens of founders dumped their Deadrop NFTs on Open Sea for half of what they’d been selling for the previous day. Hundreds of messages in support of Beahm flooded inâmany adorned with Founders avatarsâexpressing disbelief that Midnight Society would “betray” its founder.
“I stand with Doc. Y’all are lame if you cut ties with someone before evening [sic] seeing proof,” wrote BrokenJibz.
Others had more level-headed takes.
“I would love to think he didn’t know her age but I think he would have led with that if he didn’t,” wrote WeaponX.

Now a week after his departure, Beahm still dominates conversation on the server, but the mood has shifted toward closing this chapter of Midnight Society and focusing on the game. Weekly Discord playdates are set to resume soon, so some people will at least be able to play the game occasionally. But it’s fair to ask: What is Deadrop without Dr Disrespect to promote it?
It’s an extraction shooter with a verticality gimmick, an NFT game that slowly backed away from NFTs, and a very rough early access experience. Midnight Society was right to dump the Doc, but in doing so, it also shed the layer of artificial importance it’d been hiding behind. Whatever Midnight Society has been cooking throughout 2024 is now way more crucial for the studio than it was a week ago. As a paying customer, I’m not holding my breath for much, but Deadrop does have a few cool ideas I’d love to see come to fruitionâparticularly its Halo-like custom game modes and map editor.
With the Doc dusted, now comes Midnight Society’s true test: If Deadrop really is a massive hit in the making, it’ll have to stand on its own two feet.
