On an average day about a dozen new games are released on Steam. And while we think that’s a good thing, it can be understandably hard to keep up with. Potentially exciting gems are sure to be lost in the deluge of new things to play unless you sort through every single game that is released on Steam. So that’s exactly what we’ve done. If nothing catches your fancy this week, we’ve gathered the best PC games you can play right now and a running list of the 2024 games that are launching this year.

Relic Entertainment’s 2004 and 2009 real-time strategy magnum opuses, Dawn of War and Dawn of War 2, have been re-released as anniversary editions for their 15th and 20th years of real-time-strategerizing. The new anniversary editions, available on Steam, include all the DLC and extras released for the two games over the years. That’s especially nice for Dawn of War 2, which had a metric ton of DLC and skins and codes and wargear and exclusive bonuses by the end of its life cycle.

Both games are also on sale, at 80% off—or $7 and $10 respectively.

Following the shocking mass-resignation of publisher Annapurna Interactive’s entire 25-person staff, a new report from IGN has provided more details about the gaming division’s dispute with its parent company, Annapurna Pictures, and its billionaire owner, Megan Ellison. Anonymous former employees shared concerns about the Interactive division’s future under Annapurna Pictures, and claimed that Ellison refused to continue working with them on an agreement to spin off the division. Spokespeople for the parent company claimed that the division’s leader failed to respond to their efforts to move the process forward.

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE

Megan Ellison: Daughter of Larry Ellison, billionaire owner/founder of tech company Oracle. Founded Annapurna Pictures in 2011, which has produced a number of successful, art house-adjacent films.

Nathan Gary: Former Sony employee, founding member of Annapurna’s gaming-focused Interactive division. President of Annapurna Pictures overall from 2021-2024, was negotiating to spin off Interactive as a more independent company.

Hector Sanchez: Former Sony employee, founding member of Annapurna Interactive. Left the company to work at Epic for a number of years, returned to head up gaming efforts under Annapurna Pictures (not Interactive) like the deal with Remedy on the future of the Control series.

Annapurna Interactive was founded as a gaming-focused subsidiary of Ellison’s Annapurna Pictures in 2016, tapping veteran gaming talent including former Sony employees Nathan Gary and Hector Sanchez. After a run of producing successful films like The Master, Her, and Zero Dark Thirty, Annapurna Pictures began to struggle financially in the late 2010s. The Interactive division, meanwhile, enjoyed continued success with games like Stray, Outer Wilds, and Neon White. Gary was named president of Annapurna Pictures overall in 2021, but a source that spoke to IGN alleged his focus remained on the gaming side of the company.

If everything goes to plan, a nuclear reactor at the famous Three Mile Island power plant in Pennsylvania—the site of a major accident in the ’70s—will be restarted by power company Constellation Energy to fulfill an agreement with Microsoft for carbon-free energy to power its data centers.

The reactor coming back online is not the one that had a partial meltdown in 1979, which has remained dormant since the accident. That was TMI-Unit 2. The adjacent reactor, TMI-Unit 1, went back into operation in 1985 and continued to operate until 2019, when it was shut down due to “poor economics,” according to Constellation.

If you’re looking forward to finally stepping into the cockpit of Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024, the official X account has put out a handy chart for the system requirements to run it, and it seems surprisingly well optomized. If you wanted to, you could technically run the game on a rig bought almost a decade ago, which could mean your old graphics card and CPU might be worth less than the $200 Microsoft Flight Simulator 2024 Aviator Edition bundle.

For its minimum requirements, a build with an Intel Core i7-6800K and GeForce GTX 960 could run the game, so long as you have 16 GB of RAM. Recommended requirements swap that 16 GB of RAM for 32 GB and suggest grabbing either an RTX 2080 or Radeon RX 5700XT as your GPU. Once again, these aren’t incredibly intensive specs given how impressive Flight Simulator 2024 is looking. The 2024 refresh, launching November 19, comes with new mission types, new aircraft to use, pilots with actual legs, and even has an improved physics engine intended to give greater degrees of control to prospective pilots.

It’s Friday; time to relax a little, think about the weekend and maybe get a little extra help with your Wordle if you’re in the mood for it. Maybe that will take the form of a quick browse of our handy tips, some serious thinking over today’s fresh clue, or even a quick click down to the answer to the September 20 (1189) Wordle. It’s your game after all, we’re just here to help you win it.

From a certain point of view, this was a neat and orderly game: I found yellow letters, and then I turned them into green letters. Then I found the rest. Simple. What my final board doesn’t show is the bit in the middle where the alphabet, the English language, and my own brain decided to go off for a walk, leaving me wondering what impossible (read: obvious) word I was supposed to find here. The shame of it.

Yesterday, Nintendo announced that it had finally turned its baleful gaze on Palworld, and would be pursuing legal action in the Tokyo District Court against developer Pocketpair over alleged patent infringement. But which patents? Nintendo’s press release accuses Palworld of infringing on “multiple patent rights,” but Pocketpair says it doesn’t know which patents it’s supposed to have violated, and Nintendo hasn’t elaborated. While we wait for more specifics on the lawsuit, I’ve been digging into patents held by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company to see where Mario’s lawyers might be anchoring their case. After a crash course in patent research, I’ve got a strong suspicion that Nintendo’s bringing Pocketpair to court over Poké Balls.

One point of clarification before we continue: It’s definitely not about Palworld’s monsters looking similar to Pokémon. If you caught wind of the many conversations about Palworld’s arguable (or arguably blatant) imitation of Pokémon designs, you might assume that’d be the basis of Nintendo’s lawsuit. That, however, would be a dispute over copyright, which protects original creative works of authorship, like books, music, and artistic designs. While Nintendo announced back in January that it intended to “investigate and take appropriate measures to address any acts that infringe on intellectual property rights related to the Pokémon,” an eventual copyright suit seemed unlikely, even for a company with such an infamously itchy legal trigger finger. Because the claims of copyright suits are so subjective, they’re notoriously difficult to pull off; chances are, even Nintendo’s nuclear-grade legal armory wouldn’t guarantee success if it brought Pocketpair to court over knockoff Fauxkémon.
