I like to think I’m immune to targeted advertising, or at the very least resistant. But at some point we all fall victim to the algorithm, and so the whirring cogs behind my Google Discover feed correctly identified that not only am I obsessed with audio, but also a long-haired human being with a taste for heavy metal music (among many other genres, of course).

And thus, I was shown an advert for the Heavy H1H wireless headphones, somewhat aggressively marketed as the “world’s first headphones built for metal fans mimicking the live music experience.” Initially I scoffed at the concept, but on closer inspection I’ve come to realise there’s actually some really interesting headphone design going on here.

Win Thursday’s Wordle at your own pace with our handy selection of tips and tricks. Use our hint for the October 17 (1216) game to give your opening attempts a bit of direction, offering practical help while still leaving you in charge. Or take a win under any and all circumstances with a simple click through to today’s answer if you like—the choice is yours.

It took me a long time to find today’s answer, but I have to admit I enjoyed the journey too much to seriously mind. Each new row gave me a new part of the puzzle as well as a new problem to solve, and patiently working through it all until I saw that full row of green letters was a great way to start my day.

Nearly two years after its last update and more than 10 years after it was Kickstarted to the tune of $660,126, the developers behind beleaguered strategy game Unsung Story have returned to declare it’s “getting back on track.”

Unsung Story is not the biggest failure in gaming Kickstarter history—that honor may belong to Clang, which pulled in more than half a million dollars in 2012 and was declared dead two years later. But I don’t think any other Kickstarted game can match Unsung Story’s bizarre and grueling saga, from being put on hold in 2016, sold to another studio, and finally released in a limited early access form in 2020 to practically zero fanfare. That release has been hanging over the heads of developer Little Orbit for the last four years, its recent update revealed.

Bandai Namco employees are reportedly the latest victim of a wildfire of videogame layoffs that’ve scorched through the industry these past couple of years—although, owing to the unique nature of Japanese labour laws, the axe hasn’t fallen quickly.

According to a report from Bloomberg, approximately 200 out of 1,300 employees have been sent to “expulsion rooms”—also known as oidashi beya—an unsavoury practice that is nonetheless still apparently a problem in the industry. Rather than butting up against the extremely strict dismissal laws, practising companies will instead transfer their employees to rooms or floors that are designed to bore them out of their skull, or culturally shame them into accepting severance deals.

Ars Technica reports that Ward Christensen, the co-creator of the computer bulletin board system—a sort of precursor to the internet as we know it today—has died at age 78.

Popular throughout the 1980s and early ’90s, bulletin board systems—better known as BBSes, or just “boards”—enabled users to dial into remote computers via landlines to post public messages and share private exchanges with other registered users, a bit like a modern Discord server. Christensen and co-creator Randy Suess came up with the idea as a way to stay in touch with other members of the Chicago Area Computer Hobbyists’ Exchange during a blizzard that blew through the Great Lakes region in 1978. CBBS, as it was known, went online in February of that year.

Tonics are the upgrade system for Destiny 2‘s latest episode, Revenant. And much like last episode’s Research Bays, they can seem overwhelming at first. The game does a reasonably good job at walking you through the process of actually creating a tonic, but not how to unlock new recipes—which you’ll need in order to unlock the Fieldwork missions that reward some useful upgrades that make the whole process quicker. One day Bungie might properly explain the meta-structure it has created for its new release, but today is not that day.

Fortunately once you’ve learned the tricks to Destiny 2’s tonics, and how to unlock new recipes, it’s less bewildering than it might initially seem. Read below to discover how to unlock new tonics and see what each recipe can provide.

How to discover tonics

To discover new tonics in Destiny 2 you need to make more tonics. Each time you craft a tonic in the Tonic Types menu, there’s a chance that you’ll unlock a new recipe. However, there are a couple of thing to consider:

  • Crafting Volatile tonics has a chance to unlock another Volatile tonic recipe. Same for Enriching tonics unlocking Enriching tonic recipes.
  • Making tonics only seems to have a chance to unlock recipes of the rarity above. For example, crafting an Uncommon tonic has a chance to unlock a Rare tonic recipe, while crafting a Rare tonic has a chance to unlock a Legendary tonic recipe.

Find a new angle for your daily Wordle with our tips, designed to help you make the most out of every clue you find. Need something more to the point? Then keep scrolling and you’ll soon find it. There’s a hint for the October 15 (1214) Wordle ready to go, as well as today’s answer if you need to quickly turn your game around.

I quickly uncovered the dreaded “skyscraper” today, two neat columns of green letters standing tall with a single grey space between them. Yeah, one of those Wordles. The sort where I definitely almost had the answer every row, wondered if the alphabet had secretly invented a new letter when I wasn’t looking, and breathed a huge sigh of relief at the end of it.

War Mechanic Announcement Teaser – YouTube War Mechanic Announcement Teaser - YouTube
Watch On

Announced last week, War Mechanic is an upcoming sim that puts you in the boots of an enterprising grease monkey who has to build, defend, and make profitable a military base in an alternate future where we’re still fighting the big one.

The game imagines a world in which the Soviet Union attacks the US during World War 2, leading to a protracted conflict. We’re tasked with collecting resources, building a base, and defending it against the Soviets as we take contracts to repair vehicles and achieve war objectives for the good ol’ stars and stripes.
