You should start with a strong word like ARISE, or any other word that contains a good mix of common consonants and multiple vowels. You’ll also want to avoid starting words with repeating letters, as you’re wasting the chance to potentially eliminate or confirm an extra letter. Once you hit Enter, you’ll see which ones you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.

Your second guess should compliment the starting word, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. With a bit of luck, you should have some coloured squares to work with and set you on the right path.

After closing its AAA games development studio, Netflix Games VP transforms into the VP of GenAI for Games and the gobbledygook must flow: ‘a creator-first vision… with AI being a catalyst and an accelerant’

In October 2022 Netflix announced an escalation in its gaming ambitions with the internal studio Team Blue, making some eye-catching hires from across the AAA industry including Chacko Sonny (ex-Blizzard) as studio head, Joseph Staten (ex-343 Industries) and Rafael Grassetti (ex-Sony Santa Monica). Mike Verdu was VP of Netflix Games and said they were out to “build the next big thing in gaming.”

Womp womp. Two years on, Netflix announced the closure of Team Blue without it having shipped anything of note, and the three big name hires mentioned above have all departed. But Mike Verdu remains, and has now become the VP for GenAI for Games at Netflix. And he wants you to know one thing: This all happened exactly as planned, OK, and generative AI is in fact a “once in a generation inflection point,” which is also how I feel these days when I get out of bed too quickly.

In a post on (where else) LinkedIn, Verdu says a whole lot without saying anything at all. In fact I wonder whether the wonders of generative AI may be behind the post, which is laden with out-of-context buzzwords and bereft of meaning.

“This transformational technology will accelerate the velocity of development and unlock truly novel game experiences that will surprise, delight, and inspire players,” says Verdu, or possibly his chatbot. “I am focused on a creator-first vision for AI, one that puts creative talent at the center, with AI being a catalyst and an accelerant.”

The great god AI will apparently “enable big game teams to move much faster,” so it’s a bit of a pity Netflix just shuttered its only big game team. Verdu says Netflix Games built “a robust internal game studio” (does he know?), is now a “world class publishing organization” (citation needed), and has “increased game engagement by multiples.” Multiples of what, exactly: Nothing?

Trailing clouds of glory, Verdu is “ready for the next big challenge after the raw primordial act of creation” and, what do you know, “GenAI is that next challenge.” Verdu hearkens back to the simpler times of the 1990s, “when we saw a new game launch every few months that redefined what was possible,” which as someone who played games in the 1990s I can tell you is a slight exaggeration. “We’re back to those days of seemingly unlimited potential and the rapid pace of innovation.”

Are we? Verdu tuts at the naysayers: “Many view this technology with fear, but I am a game-maker at heart and I see its potential to unlock all of us, to create mind-blowing new experiences for players, to lift us to new heights.”

When people stop talking about what GenAI is going to create game-wise, and actually show off something it’s created that is great, maybe I’ll pay a little more attention. As it is the AI space remains one of overblown promises, questionable use cases, and sub-par output.

But Verdu is “thrilled” regardless. As for the closure of Team Blue and the departures and Netflix looking like it’s a bit clueless about everything, pshaw! “Pay no mind to the uninformed speculation in the media about the changes in Netflix Games,” declares Verdu. “What you’ve seen over the last several months was actually a planned transition.”

Well that settles that then. Verdu is hardly alone in being a starry-eyed suit, it should be said, with nearly every major publisher investing heavily in AI of various kinds, though few are willing to get into how it will impact jobs in the industry beyond the dread word “efficiency.” Some of those likely to be affected are at least getting organised around the issue, with the SAG-AFTRA voice actors’ union is currently three months into a strike, hoping to secure better AI protections for performers in the industry.

But there is no putting this particular GenAI back in the bottle. Verdu’s grand visions of the future are nothing you haven’t heard before, because there’s now an entire industry of people just dedicated to extolling AI’s potential and trousering as much of that lovely venture capital loot as they can.

Perhaps the funniest thing about Verdu’s post is it ends with a terribly generic image of a sci-fi city, which the credits show was generated by Microsoft’s AI tools. It’s weirdly bland, foregrounding a bucolic landscape contoured in ways that make no sense, dotted with farmsteads that jar with the gleaming metropolis in the distance, and riven-through with roads to nowhere. Who’d’ve thought?

The first PUBG spinoff with real promise is a top-down take on Rainbow Six Siege

My Project Arc playtest played out like a horror movie. I was skulking around a hospital, my teammates were dead and my enemies were not just in power, but clearly having a really good time running me down. Project Arc is a top-down competitive shooter set in the PUBG universe, and the people I’m playing against in this early playtest are much better than I am.

It’s not my fault. Krafton has decided the best way to let journalists get hold of their game for the first time was to pit them against a team of esports organisers that Krafton had paid to be there. They were more experienced with Project Arc, they knew the maps, and they were hiding in corners and vents ready to kill us the second we lost focus. Every time we entered a room blind or turned a corner looking the wrong way, we’d pay for it with blood. It felt less like a battle of equals and more like the cooling tower scene in Aliens—except the aliens had military grade weaponry and a grudge.

On the plus side, the unmitigated slaughter created an unbreakable bond between the five of us as we came together against the common threat of players we have no business getting matched up against. As I managed to rack up two entire kills versus the other team’s 10, I was reminded of that feeling of trying to learn a game a year after launch, when the players still hanging around are mercilessly good.

Once I got past the one-sided matchups, Project Arc was pretty fun. It’s a top-down shooter—a marriage of genre and camera angle that you rarely see outside SWAT tactics games—with some mechanical crunch: moving around is intuitive but, to make up for your lack of control over the Y-axis, you choose whether to aim at the head or body with the mouse scroll wheel. The hardest adjustment was the whiplash I felt every time I pressed the right mouse button, which I usually expect to bring my gun at the ready, but here swings my body around 180 degrees. The shortcut is presumably there to make aiming easier, but it threw me off during our brief hour or so of playtime pretty much every time I aimed.

Top down blasting

We started in Team Deathmatch and the game is fairly lightweight. Weapons pack a punch, there are health packs littered around and because line-of-sight is shared and you can only see what your team can see, there’s a logical realism to Project Arc’s visual information even though the game isn’t really that realistic at all. Characters have a weapon, sidearm, a unique gadget and you can switch operators between deaths. One character with a P90 became an early favourite, but I quickly found myself vibing more with someone kitted out with an M4 assault rifle and a grenade launcher.

Later, in the game’s Demolition mode, I discovered that Project Arc owes more than a little debt to Rainbow Six Siege. The attacking team chooses one of four spawn locations and then pushes in to plant an object at the A or B objective. This map took place in a hospital and was full of crawl spaces, destructible walls and hidey-holes. The defending team can make this more difficult by placing barbed wire and explosive traps throughout the corridors and reinforcing destructible walls. This is more tense stuff than the respawn modes we’d led with: die and you’re dead for the round, and often a round is decided by one cataclysmic fight, whether it’s an ambush or a smart room take.

Since close-quarters, destruction-heavy shooters like Project Arc are all about map knowledge, I wish I’d gotten the chance to learn the map before Krafton’s kill team tore us apart. Our defenses were torn to shred every round, and incursions often led to us getting picked apart from corners we hadn’t yet felt out.

Regardless, it’s easy to see that the fundamentals of Project Arc are solid, even if they are mostly Rainbow Six Siege’s fundamentals. It liberally takes the coolest bits from Ubisoft‘s long-running tac FPS: destructible walls, barbed wire, an operator that can hurl gas canisters everywhere but also has a non-functional gas mask just to psych players out. There’s even a guy with a hammer that can Kool-Aid Man through walls.

The PUBG influence is much less pronounced. Besides one of the characters gaining access to a blue zone grenade that messes with everyone inside it, there’s not much to do with the venerable battle royale game here. In fact, as someone that played a thousand hours of PUBG back in 2017 and 2018, I didn’t even know there was a PUBG universe.

With some polish to the controls and a proper onboarding experience, this could be a genuinely fun, highly accessible tac shooter. The link to the battle royale is meaningless and Project Arc comes across like its own world attached to PUBG purely by circumstance, but this feels like a lightweight option for players who can’t get invested in something like the sprawling horror of modern day Rainbow Six Siege.

GTA 6’s corporate overlord reveals that he’s looking forward to ‘a more sensible FTC’ under the Trump administration because sometimes ‘deregulation can be a positive’

During a recent earnings call, Take-Two’s CEO and chairman, Strauss Zelnick, discussed the company’s current state of affairs, including selling off Private Division, its high-end indie publishing label, and how he thinks the upcoming Trump presidency will affect business.

“I believe in the democratic process. By all accounts, this was a free, fair, and secure election,” Zelnick says (via Variety). “We’re an entertainment company, not a politics company. We’re focused on our mission.

“I think that the President-elect has made it very plain that he believes in reducing regulation. I do believe that the FTC was misguided during President Biden’s term, and I do think that the FTC tried to impede some transactions that were beneficial for both the companies in question and the economy at large, and the FTC lost all those cases since. So I do think that, depending on what the specific topic is, deregulation can be a positive, and I am certainly looking forward to a more sensible FTC.”

From the beginning, the FTC was a big roadblock in Microsoft’s bid to buy Activision Blizzard. At first, it planned to sue Microsoft in order to stop the deal from going through, as it said that the company’s treatment of Bethesda games demonstrated that it “can and will withhold content from rival platforms.” The biggest sticking point was whether Microsoft planned to make the Call of Duty series exclusive: “With control over Activision’s blockbuster franchises, Microsoft would have both the means and motive to harm competition by manipulating Activision’s pricing, [as well as] degrading Activision’s game quality or player experience on rival consoles.”

Another issue that the FTC tried to warn courts about was the potential that the acquisition of Activision Blizzard could mean a hike in Game Pass prices. Something that was made a reality after Microsoft announced that the PC Game Pass would get a $2 price increase and Game Pass Ultimate changed from $16.99 to $19.99/month.

I do believe that for Take-Two and other large corporations, deregulation is a positive, but that’s not the case for consumers. Yes, the FTC spent the better half of the last two years breathing down Microsoft’s neck only for the deal to go ahead anyway, but I’d much rather see some attempt, no matter how successful, to put the consumer first over profit. But I’m not the CEO of a billion-dollar company, so maybe my priorities are a little different.

Pud’s Dolbus gets you 5.1 surround sound from headphones with a side of deadly Saw trap nightmares

PC Gamer’s favourite headphone inventor Philip of Pud’s Small Batch Headphones has been at it yet again, this time crafting a veritable Jigsaw trap-looking headphones that pump out full 5.1 surround sound audio.

Move over Ol’ Thumpy and make way Scrub Daddy because Philip’s now showing off his 5.1 surround-sound headpones on Reddit. Only, I can’t tell whether to call these headphones, speakers, or take a lean into sci-fi land and go with The Mind Prison.

The actual name for them Dolbus, which, as Philip explains on his website, refers to “surround-sound headpones with 5 speaker drivers plus subwoofer”. Even the best gaming headsets can only give you virtual surround-sound, and however impressive that might be it’ll never be as good as the real deal.

The real deal means having five actual speakers surrounding you, though, which is exactly what this pair (pentuplet?) of “headphones” does. You seat your cranium in the centre of five tiny speakers.

Needless to say, unless you have some two-feet-out-the-socket curvy eyeballs, you won’t be using these for gaming, or for much that requires, well, seeing anything, because there’ll be a speaker right in front of your eyes. Practical? Maybe not. But would I want a set anyway? Well… still maybe not… Lest I get trapped in the Mind Prison.

But I’ll go to bat for anyone who does, because it’s an incredibly cool concept, as with all of Pud’s wondrous creations. Ah heck, you’ve bent my arm, sign me up. It’s worth the possible nightmares.

Playing Wordle well is like achieving a small victory every day—who doesn’t like a well-earned winning streak in a game you enjoy? If you’re new to the daily word game, or just want a refresher, I’m going to share a few quick tips to help set you on the path to success:

You want a balanced mix of unique consonants and vowels in your opening word.
A solid second guess helps to narrow down the pool of letters quickly.
The answer could contain letters more than once.

There’s no time pressure beyond making sure it’s done by the end of the day. If you’re struggling to find the answer or a tactical word for your next guess, there’s no harm in coming back to it later on.

Wordle gives you six rows of five boxes each day, and it’s your job to work out which five-letter word is hiding by eliminating or confirming the letters it contains.

Starting with a strong word like LEASH—something containing multiple vowels, common consonants, and no repeat letters—is a good place to start. Once you hit Enter, the boxes will show you which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.

Your second go should compliment the starting word, using another “good” guess to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer. After that, it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the right word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words (so no filling the boxes with EEEEE to see if there’s an E). Don’t forget letters can repeat too (ex: BOOKS).

Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle, as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle, refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures. Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.

How to obtain Mythal’s essence by convincing her to help you in Dragon Age: The Veilguard

No RPG is complete without a dialogue pop quiz and you’re going to get a deadly one when you try to obtain Mythal’s essence in Dragon Age: The Veilguard. If you collect all the wolf statuettes to complete the Regrets of the Dread Wolf quest, Morrigan will have a chat with you about all the things you learned from Solas’ memories.

Along with a lot of other lore about Morrigan’s history and relationship to the elven gods, she suggests that you should hunt down a fragment of Solas’ former partner in godhood Mythal. This essence of Mythal could be useful in the future, she suspects, but you’re going to have to convince Mythal to trust you. Morrigan’s advice on the matter is that Mythal will “demand respect but detest flattery” and “appreciates righteous anger but will not tolerate pity.” If that’s a little too vague, I’ve tested out all the options so you can easily convince Mythal to join your cause.

How to obtain Mythal’s essence

The easiest way to obtain Mythal’s essence is to complete Bellara’s full personal quest first. You can tell Mythal “I want your help,” then “We must stop the gods,” and finally “We stopped Anaris” to instantly win her favor without completing the rest of the conversation.

Essentially, Mythal will allow you to convince her to help you by giving your arguments on four different topics: the blight, the gods, your own worthiness, and having Solas on your side. Some answers will lead to an instant fight with Mythal, but she transforms into a level 45 dragon so I don’t recommend that. Among the other answers, some are better than others. Your goal is to be convincing enough across those four topics to win Mythal’s support.

How to convince Mythal to assist you:

In your conversation with Mythal, you’ll get to address four different topics to convince her to assist you. I don’t know what the actual under-the-hood math is, but based on all my testing, you need to gain six ‘points’ in the conversation, at which point Mythal will immediately relinquish her essence.

You can achieve that with the instant win talking point “We must stop the gods” followed by “We stopped Anaris.” Or you can give the best answers (two ‘points’ each) to three different subjects.

Your first dialogue choice must be “I want your help.” Both other options lead to an instant fight with Mythal as a dragon. Here are all the dialogue options for the four topics of conversation, the best answer in bold for two points, a less optimal answer for one point, and the option you should avoid unless you want to fight.

Again, your goal is to get six points, using the dialogue choices below:

“We must stop the blight”

+2: “You stood against it”
+1: “People will die”
⚔: “The blight is your fault”

“We must stop the gods”

+2: “They wronged you”
+1: “Put the blight aside?”
⚔: “We need no gods”
+6: “We stopped Anaris” (Available if you’ve completed Bellara’s personal quests)

“We are worthy”

+2: “Building a safe place”
+1: “Fighting monsters”
⚔: “I’m following your example”

“Solas is helping me”

+2: “Respected him”
+1: “Forgotten him”
