Ahead of its launch later this month, Sony has been revealing more about the world of Horizon Forbidden West through a series of trailers and gameplay deep dives. This week, the focus is on the accessibility of the game and the options available to players who want to fine-tune the experience of exploring a land where giant robot snakes are at the top of the food chain.

Some of these options were previously seen in Horizon Zero Dawn, but developer Guerrilla explained in a PS Blog post that there will be plenty of new options to select from as well. General accessibility settings include subtitles that can be tweaked to be more visible, and you can select your preferred language–both spoken and subtitles–when you start the game for the first time.

A notebook creates an expansive encyclopedia containing useful information about characters, machines, and data points found in the world, and is designed to be easily accessible in case you need to brush up on any gameplay mechanics.

In the gameplay and difficulty settings department, Horizon Forbidden West has five difficulty settings that are tailored to give you as much challenge as you want. Story Mode eases the combat experience so you can explore the wilderness without having to worry about being irreparably mauled by rampaging robots, and on the opposite end of the spectrum there is Very Hard mode which will push Aloy’s survival skills to the limits.

A custom difficulty option will allow you to adjust various factors, such as damage levels, while the hunting aspect of the game has an Easy Loot system that’s designed to protect valuable resources from being destroyed while you engage in combat against a machine. Weapons and combat settings can be eased up further with aim assist and temporarily slowing down time while you cycle through your gear, and many of Auto functions can be set for Aloy’s concentration gauge, sprinting, healing, and Shieldwing skills.

As for controls using the DualSense controller, Guerrilla added that there’ll be presets available–including left-handed support–fully remappable gameplay controls with guidance on any potential conflicts, and the Co-pilot system. This allows a second PlayStation controller with mirrored controls access to the game–either DualSense or DualShock 4–and was designed based on feedback and support from Guerrilla’s sightless accessibility consultant.

Lastly, a number of audio and visual settings can also be adjusted. A number of these options are designed to trim the volume of machine sounds, weapon and explosion sounds, or ambient sounds on the PS5 edition of the game, which can be helpful for people who are easily overstimulated. Triggering sounds that can potentially affect people who have Tinnitus can be switched off and replaced with Mono Audio.

In case you missed it, you can catch up on our guide to everything we know about Horizon Forbidden West. The game launches on PS5 and PS4 on February 18, with several editions and collector’s items that you can still preorder. In a show of PlayStation camraderie, Ghost of Tsushima features Horizon Forbidden West crossover content, and if you’re looking for some assistance, here’s how you can complete the newly-added Forbidden Shrine and score some themed armor in the process.

When you’ve got an entire army of ninjas, mutants, and alien threats from Dimension X looking to take over New York City, four color-coded brothers skilled in martial arts may not be enough to save the day. Fortunately, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is bulking up its roster, as the turtles’ sensei Master Splinter will be a playable character in the game.

In an update on the PS Blog, Tribute Games marketing manager Eric Lafontaine described how Splinter’s inclusion was a chance for the TMNT mentor to show off his own set of formidable skills.

“In our youth, we all imagined Splinter was a capable combatant,” Lafontaine said. “However, as much on television in the original animated series as in the early licensed video games, rarely did we see the master show off his skills–and this scarcity quite likely charged Splinter’s mysticism.”

Unlike the Ninja Turtles gang, Splinter is designed to be a little bit calmer and collected in his movements, fluidly chaining together attacks using his rat-like physiology, martial arts prowess, and his cane. Using those skills, Splinter sets up windows of opportunity that allow him to dish out punishing combos, which are further enhanced by a unique ranged magical charge attack.

Splinter’s design and attack animation–which is also based on his look from the original 1987 animated series–even references the opening credits of the cartoon for a brutal series of strikes using his entire body as a lethal weapon.

In addition to Raphael, Leonardo, Donatello, and Michelangelo, April O’Neil will also be a playable character in the upcoming beat-’em-up game. Interestingly, April is also showing off her journalistic talents in Nickelodeon All-Star Brawl, where her mic skills make her a force to be reckoned with.

Shredder–the best character in all of TMNT and who even has a canonical victory over Batman–sadly isn’t a playable character. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is scheduled to launch for Switch, PS5, PS4, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC in 2022.

To celebrate Valentine’s Day and doing things together with friends and loved ones, Sony is making online multiplayer free this weekend across PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Activision’s Call of Duty Endowment charity, which helps place military veterans in jobs after they leave the service, had a big year in 2021–it broke a number of records during the year.

In a blog post, the charity shared some 2021 stats, including how it placed 16,138 veterans in jobs in 2021, which is up from 15,446 in 2020. The Endowment’s goal is to have placed a total of 100,000 veterans in new jobs by 2024. Additionally, the average salary of the Endowment’s job placement for former service members in 2021 was $64,163, which is the highest in the group’s 12-year history. The average salary for a job placement from the Endowment in 2020 was $61,050.

“Every veteran matters, and the Endowment is proud to support traditionally under-represented populations as part of our work. Last year, 20% of the veterans we placed in meaningful employment were Black, as compared to the 12% of the veteran population. Women also saw success–19% of our placements were women, as compared to 10% of the total veteran population,” The Endowment said.

The Endowment also thanked its grantees, including the American Corporate Partners, which won the Endowment’s 2021 Seal of Distinction. ACP received a $30,000 unrestricted grant for this achievement.

Additionally, the Endowment paid $8.6 million in grants in 2021 to a dozen other US and UK-based groups that help find jobs for military veterans. According to Activision, the Endowment can place a veteran in a new job for about $547, while the US government spends on average $4,998 to do so.

The Endowment is funded also in part by fans who buy digital content for Activision’s games. In 2021, Treyarch released a DLC pack inspired by former Army medic Tim Hobbs, with proceeds going in part to the Endowment. There was also the Revival Challenge in Call of Duty Warzone for Military Appreciation Month that raised month for the Endowment. “Our first-party partners at Microsoft and Sony had a huge impact on our ability to sell these packs, and we thank them for their support,” Activision said.

It was a big year for the Call of Duty Endowment

Thanks to digital content packs alone, the Endowment placed more than 5,500 military veterans in jobs, Activision said. The Endowment also got help from corporate partners in 2021, including GameStop, Pilot Company, USAA, and Humble Bundle in the US alone, as well as Jingle Jam, Amazon, and Papa John’s in the UK.

“We’re so grateful for your support and the tireless efforts of our grantees. We know, as you do, that veterans can and should be a vital part of our country’s workforce and our communities. The Endowment will continue to make that happen in 2022,” it said.

Check out the full blog post to see a rundown of the Endowment’s accomplishments in 2021.

It is not immediately clear what impact, if any, Microsoft’s proposed acquisition of Activision Blizzard could have on the Endowment. Keep checking back with GameSpot for the latest.

The Call of Duty series continues this year with a new game from Infinity Ward, which is rumored to be Modern Warfare 2.

Wordle has been the first surprise hit of 2022, a simple, fully-unmonetized word game that has taken social media by storm. Like other crazes, Wordle has inspired a host of other Wordle-like games, some uninspired cash-grabs, and others more creative takes on the format.

New game Dungleon fits into the latter category, providing an entirely word and letter-free version of Wordle that’s inspired by classic dungeon crawlers, as picked up by Polygon. In lieu of letters, Dungleon has players pick from 20 mini sprites representing heroes, monsters, and loot.

Plenty of elements have been retained from the original Wordle formula–when selected, the sprites go green for being placed in the right spot, yellow for being present in the dungeon but in the wrong spot, and red if they’re fully absent. Players will also have just six guesses to figure out the dungeon configuration, and will be able to share their results to social media in a grid of emojis. Dungleon can also only be played once a day, providing a countdown to when the next puzzle will drop.

We made a wordle-like!https://t.co/TP42dtrZ6f is a “guess the dungeon” game, with a new dungeon every day. Easy to guess, hard to master.

Dungleon adds its own unique takes on the format, though. In lieu of having existing dictionary words to guess from, Dungleon has a set of secret rules that players will be able to figure out if they play across multiple days. The most straightforward of these is that each dungeon has at least one hero and one monster. The others require players to look for patterns, with one rule stating that “some pieces only appear along with other pieces” and the last saying “some pieces only appear in a specific spot.”

The game was put together by Brazilian developers Felipe Dal Molin and Bruno Ruchiga, with art by French pixel artist Clément Dussol. Like Wordle it’s available in-browser and is both free to play and ad free, and very worth bookmarking if you need another Wordle-like game to scratch that itch.

The first post-launch patch for Pokemon Legends: Arceus has arrived, bringing with it fixes for a number of glitches that have made life difficult for Arceus players. Chief among these: an issue where Cherrim would become uncatchable if it changed forms during a battle has now been fixed.

Prior to the 1.0.2 patch, the cute little cherry Pokemon was proving almost impossible to catch, with players on Reddit saying they spent multiple hours on the attempt, with Cherrim breaking out of Ultra Balls even on 1HP. The game’s Japanese support page acknowledged the bug prior to the new patch, saying that Cherrim couldn’t be caught if it transformed even once during a battle.

Other updates include a fix for an issue where, during offline play, the screen would freeze if players tried to pick up a lost satchel after throwing a ball containing a Pokemon. Another fix stops players from obtaining duplicates of a Pokemon that was only intended to appear once.

Unfortunately, the update seems to have caused another bug with the potential to prevent players from ultimately catching Arceus. As mentioned by players on Reddit and now acknowledged on the Japanese support page, patch 1.0.2 has created an issue where players won’t be able to complete the “The Plate of Moonview Arena” mission if they catch Cresselia without talking to Melli first. As this mission is part of eventually unlocking the game’s ultimate Arceus encounter, it’s a frustrating bug for players to come up against.

The support page has said that this bug will be fixed in the next update, but hasn’t specified when that will be. For now, players are encouraged to make sure they talk to Melli before proceeding to try and catch Cresselia.

1994’s Live a Live is getting a remake, revealed during the February 2022 Nintendo Direct. The RPG is scheduled to launch on July 22, featuring an updated HD-2D art style that resembles Octopath Traveler or Triangle Strategy–the latter of which now has a free demo.

Live a Live follows seven different characters in distinct, seemingly unrelated stories that take place across a variety of different locations and points in time. As you continue playing, you’ll discover how all seven stories ultimately intertwine in one cohesive narrative.

As seen in the trailer, the Live a Live remake seems to follow the original game’s narrative pretty closely without changing anything, featuring the same seven time periods–Prehistory, The Wild West, Imperial China, Twilight of Edo Japan, Present Day, The Near Future, and The Distant Future. You can tackle these different stories in whichever order you prefer or bounce between them, much like 2019’s 13 Sentinels: Aegis Rim.

This remake represents the first time that Live a Live has been released outside of Japan. Live a Live will launch on Switch.

The first gameplay footage for MLB The Show 22 has been released, showing what this year’s professional baseball game looks like in action–and it looks pretty great. Captured on “next gen” hardware, the video shows off a number of different ballparks and players, including cover star Shohei Ohtani of the Los Angeles Angels, as well as sluggers Aaron Judge and Raphael Devers.

Be sure to watch through until the end, as the gameplay video finishes up with a shot of retired ace Randy Johnson, who was known to have one of the strongest, most bird-unfriendly arms in baseball history. Presumably, Johnson will come to MLB The Show 22 as one of the game’s “legends,” similar to how Cy Young and Jackie Robinson were featured in previous editions of MLB The Show.

The trailer doesn’t actually get into any of the specifics around what is new in MLB The Show 22, but it’s a good primer at least to show off how the game looks this year. More details about the gameplay updates will be shared over the coming weeks.

MLB The Show 22 launches on April 5, just in time for the start of the new MLB season. Like last year, Sony San Diego developed the game and it will be released on multiple platforms, including Xbox, and, for the first time, Nintendo Switch. Xbox fans can play the game on Game Pass as part of their subscription.

As for cover star Ohtani, he was an obvious choice. In 2021, he hit 46 home runs and collected 100 RBI. He also put up very impressive numbers as a pitcher, going 9-2 with a 3.18 ERA and 156 strikeouts.

“After having one of the greatest seasons in the history of Major League Baseball, Shohei Ohtani was really the only obvious choice to grace the cover of MLB The Show 22,” Ramone Russell of developer Sony San Diego Studio said in a post for Xbox.

MLB is currently in the midst of a labor lockout, but whether or not that would have any impact on MLB The Show 22 remains to be seen.

MLB The Show has multiple editions to choose from, so it might be helpful to consult GameSpot’s MLB The Show 22 preorder guide to find out more.
