Blizzard is bringing back World of Warcraft’s wildly popular Wrath of the Lich King expansion, but when it arrives, it may be even more old-school than some players remember.

Wrath of the Lich King was a revolutionary expansion in many ways. It was during the expansion that Blizzard’s MMORPG peaked in terms of subscription numbers, and the expansion introduced the game’s first new class in the Death Knight, added achievements, and featured a fan-favorite villain that served as the perfect base to build an entire expansion around. While many players, and Blizzard itself, maybe didn’t realize it at the time, Wrath of the Lich King also started to lay the foundation for what would become the modern-day version of the game, with the addition of convenience features like automated dungeon matchmaking and markers on the map telling players exactly where to go to complete their quests.

Those two features specifically won’t be present in Wrath of the Lich King Classic. That was a conscious decision on Blizzard’s part in order to preserve what Blizzard describes as Classic’s “core values.” While many players consider the game’s 2010 Cataclysm expansion as the major turning point in the history of the game, when many of the game’s classes and systems were updated to be more similar to how they are now, those seeds were actually planted with the final Wrath of the Lich King patch. Wrath of the Lich King Classic will still operate on the expansion’s last patch, only minus the features that, in the WoW Classic team’s mind, started to erode the social-focused experience of the MMORPG.

“We don’t make these kind of changes lightly,” Wrath of the Lich King Classic principal system designer Kris Zierhut said in a recent group interview that GameSpot participated in. “They come from really core values as to what Classic is about. We think Classic is about being social, making friends, meeting new people. In order to make that happen, you have to run into those people on multiple occasions, you have to have a chance to play with them, and then play with them a second time and say ‘Oh yeah, I remember that guy, he was cool last time, maybe I should add him to my friend’s list. Maybe I should put him on my list of people I try to make dungeon groups with,’ after you’ve had a successful dungeon run. We want to emphasize social and we also want to emphasize the world and immersion in the world.”

The changes coming in Wrath of the Lich King Classic are a good indication of how much Blizzard’s mindset has changed since it first released WoW Classic in 2019. Back then, Blizzard sought to recreate “vanilla” WoW as it was back in 2006 as closely as possible, with as few changes as possible. But over time, specifically towards the end of WoW Classic’s content release cycle and as part of Blizzard’s re-release of the game’s first expansion, The Burning Crusade, that philosophy began to change.

The WoW Classic team started to look at and implement player feedback, including quality-of-life updates that improved the WoW Classic player experience while still staying true to the old-school nature of the original game and its first expansion. Some of those changes included updating the rate at which the game’s servers detected inputs to account for modern internet speeds. Other changes included the ability for same-faction PvP battlegrounds in Burning Crusade Classic, done in the name of reducing queue times and helping to solve a faction imbalance problem. Blizzard even introduced WoW Classic Season of Mastery, where players could create new characters and play through vanilla WoW all over again, albeit this time at an accelerated rate with more challenging raids, increased loot drop rates, and other major changes.

Wrath of the Lich King Classic, then, is an opportunity for Blizzard to take a second pass at the game’s most beloved expansion, this time keeping in mind the social systems that weren’t considered when the expansion originally released in 2008.

“We didn’t have people thinking about how social systems should work back when we originally did Wrath of the Lich King, so it’s a new lens to look at things,” Zierhut said. “What promotes social? What damages social? Paying close attention to that…We’re trying to think about as we design for Wrath of the Lich King [Classic] how we can promote social, how we can create those situations where people can find similarity, engage in acts of reciprocity, the things that lead them to friendship, and avoid damaging social proximity. That’s the thing we weren’t careful about when we worked on Wrath of the Lich King the first time.”

Other changes that will be implemented come from Blizzard having watched Wrath of the Lich King play out once already, with Zierhut using the game’s Death Knights as an example. Originally, players who wanted to play a Death Knight had to play catch-up in the days following the expansion’s release, as the class started at level 55. Meanwhile, everyone else who didn’t make a Death Knight was already level 70 and on the boat to Northrend to experience the new content. Blizzard will be avoiding that scenario this time around, with Death Knights coming as part of the expansion’s pre-patch. While Blizzard wouldn’t promise an exact length of time for the patch, the plan is for it to last somewhere between two to six weeks.

The Wintergrasp PvP battleground introduced as part of Wrath of the Lich King was another opportunity for Blizzard to make a positive quality-of-life change. In the original version of Wrath of the Lich King, players were so desperate to win Wintergrasp and score the loot found within the Vault of Archavon raid (which could only be accessed by the faction that controlled Wintergrasp) that they were transferring servers and changing factions to ensure they could win as much as possible. Blizzard will be looking at ways to make Wintergrasp less important by potentially offering different ways to earn the loot traditionally associated with the activity. Dual specialization, a feature introduced in Wrath of the Lich King that allowed players to swap between two different builds (for a price) will also be returning, though how it is implemented may change compared to its original version. The in-game barber shop will be updated to use in-game gold, and will allow players to change their gender alongside other features, which wasn’t an option in the original version.

Changes to various spell names, quests, achievements, and other content have come in recent months to both WoW Classic and the modern version of the game in the name of inclusivity. Those changes will be present in Wrath of the Lich King Classic too, as Blizzard looks at ways to make WoW more welcoming and inclusive following recent sexual harassment and discrimination lawsuits and investigations accusing the company of having fostered a frat boy culture.

Like Burning Crusade Classic, Blizzard will offer a single paid character boost per account come Wrath of the Lich King Classic’s release, so that players who didn’t play WoW Classic or Burning Crusade Classic can get up to speed and jump into the newly released content. When asked if Wrath of the Lich King Classic would offer a paid deluxe edition similar to the one offered for Burning Crusade Classic–a bundle that upset a portion of the Classic community due to it introducing microtransactions to the previously microtransaction-free old-school MMO–Blizzard said it had nothing to announce at this time. Blizzard did note, however, that content similar to the in-game items found in Burning Crusade Classic’s deluxe edition have been available in WoW from the very beginning, dating all the way back to the collector’s edition for the original game back in 2004. For those lucky enough to have snagged one of the original WoW collector’s editions, those exclusive pets are usable in WoW Classic.

Blizzard made clear that many of the changes for Wrath of the Lich King Classic come straight from the game’s community, which Blizzard stressed is the key driving force behind nearly every decision the team makes, including what future expansions may get the “Classic” treatment next.

One decision players won’t have a say in, however, is whether or not they want to move ahead with Wrath of the Lich King at all. Unlike the release of Burning Crusade Classic, where Blizzard gave players the choice of keeping their characters on what it now calls “Classic Era” servers or progressing them to The Burning Crusade, all current Burning Crusade Classic servers will be automatically converted into Wrath of the Lich King Classic servers come the expansion’s release. While Burning Crusade servers won’t exist come Wrath of the Lich King Classic’s release, Blizzard is leaving the door open to revisit the expansion down the line.

“As for what happens after Wrath of the Lich King, we really want to hear from the community,” Zierhut said. “This whole project has been community driven, this whole project came to be because the community demanded it. So we want to hear what the community wants to see next…We have our own opinions, but the opinions of the community will help us make better decisions.”

Wrath of the Lich King Classic is slated to arrive sometime in 2022. Blizzard recently announced the new expansion for the modern version of the game, Dragonflight. The game’s ninth expansion, it will add the new ranged Evoker class (which is also a new dragon race), the new Dragon Isles continent, and revamp a number of “evergreen” systems like professions and talents. Dragonflight will be released “when it’s ready.”

God of War: Ragnarok‘s Cory Barlog has provided an update on the upcoming PlayStation game, telling fans the team is currently “heads-down, hard at work” at finishing the title for its 2022 release.

“We haven’t said a lot about this. That’s because everybody is heads-down, hard at work. We are perfectionists. Everyone is tightening up the graphics…there is so much going on right now that I just wish we could share with you. But it’s just not ready to be shown,” he said. “I guarantee you the moment–the very second–that we have something we’re ready to share, we’re going to share it with you. We don’t want to hold any of this back. So please, hold tight–know that something cool is coming and that we–everybody here at Sony Santa Monica–is so incredibly thankful for all the support you’ve given us.”

Today, April 20, is the fourth anniversary of 2018’s God of War. The game sold more than 19.5 million copies, and that was before it launched on Steam, so the figure may have climbed above 20 million now.

4 years ago, God of War (2018) released! We’re grateful to all of you who joined Kratos and Atreus on their journey, and we’re so proud of the team who worked to bring it to life.

While we’re not ready to share an update about what comes next, here’s a quick message from Cory! pic.twitter.com/Z5PHpKQppY

— Santa Monica Studio – God of War Ragnarök (@SonySantaMonica) April 20, 2022

Ragnarok was apparently originally going to launch in 2021, but Kratos actor Christopher Judge suffered an injury in 2019 that reportedly led to a delay to 2022.

Barlog directed 2018’s God of War but he stepped back for the sequel, with Eric Williams directing Ragnarok. It is the final entry in the God of War Norse saga, but Barlog said he hopes to make a “big splash” with a different project as his next game–though we don’t know anything about this year.

PlayStation has released a new app on PC for updating the DualSense controller. Available on computers running a Windows 10 or 11 operating system, the firmware update program is available through PlayStation’s website and allows for the DualSense controller to be updated by connecting it with a USB-C cable.

It’s worth noting that Microsoft also occasionally releases new firmware for its wireless Xbox controllers for the Xbox Series X|S consoles, although these devices can receive the upgrade wirelessly.

The DualSense controller has been compatible with PCs since it was first released in 2020 alongside the PS5 console, with the device finding an audience on PC thanks to its haptic feedback features and several first-party PlayStation games being ported over.

Sony first started paving the way for its IP to release on PC with Horizon Zero Dawn in 2020, which was followed by Days Gone in 2021 and God of War earlier this year.

The next PlayStation first-party IP headed to PC later this year are Uncharted 4: A Thief’s End and Uncharted: The Lost Legacy. Beyond those two games, expect more titles to make their way over eventually, as Sony acquired PC-porting specialist studio Nixxes in July last year.

Steamforged Games has announced that it will be reissuing its Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game rulebooks after consumers have reported copies filled with errors.

In a new statement shared on its website, Steamforged said, “We at Steamforged Games would like to issue a sincere apology regarding the errors that have come to light in the Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game (via Polygon).

Following the release of the collector’s edition advance copies in Europe and the United States last week, consumers discovered errors ranging from spelling mistakes, as well as inconsistencies with the Dark Souls rules. The Dark Souls: The Roleplaying Game rulebook is set to officially launch on May 16 in the U.S. The company went on to say that it has listened to community feedback and recognised “the importance of the issues that have arisen.”

“We want to make it clear that we take this matter extremely seriously and therefore have decided the best course of action is to order reprints of the book, issuing replacement copies to those customers who have already bought or pre-ordered the Standard Edition and/or Collector’s Edition,” the company said.

Steamforged confirmed that the reorders also apply to the PDF versions it previously announced, saying that every customer who buys a copy of the printed rulebook will get a free PDF copy as well. It’s unclear when they will be released at this time.

“We ask for a little patience as we gather more detailed information regarding these reprints, the timescales involved, and how best to ensure we resolve this for each affected customer,” the company added.

The latest 14.1.1 firmware update for the Nintendo Switch is here, but the patch notes are brief, offering little beyond unspecified stability improvements. The patch is only a minor one, with the last lot of major changes having been added with patch 14.0.0, which was released on March 21.

The latest update was released on April 18, and includes only one item in the patch notes, promising general improvements to system stability and user experience. The update should automatically download upon starting up your console, but players can also check their system version and manually start the update from the System Settings menu.

The most recent patch 14.1.0 was released on April 5, and added a new notification system for unclaimed Platinum Points, as well as the option for players to toggle them off.

The Switch’s next big game is Nintendo Switch Sports, which is due to release on April 29, bringing a new take on the series started with Wii Sports to the Switch. Another hotly anticipated Switch game, Breath of the Wild 2, has been delayed into 2023.

Fortnite’s v20.20 update is bringing a slew of changes for players, and from April 22 to May 2, The Origin will have Covert Ops Quests available for everyone willing to take them on. The reward? The Secret Sledge Pickaxe, a free harvesting tool cosmetic to use in-game. There will be a total for four quests, with each quest lasting for either two or four days. Players will also need to have completed the previous quest before being able to start the next quest, so since each quest is only available for a limited time, make sure to knock each Covert Ops quest out before the time expires.

The dates and times for each quest are as follows:

Quest 1 will begin April 22 at 9 AM ET and ends April 26 at 8:59 AM ET

Quest 2 will begin April 26 at 9 AM ET and ends April 28 at 8:59 AM ET

Quest 3 will begin April 28 at 9 AM ET and ends April 30 at 8:59 AM ET

Quest 4 will begin April 30 at 9 AM ET and ends May 2 at 8:59 AM ET

Each quest will remain active until the minute the next one starts, so if you just need to complete one last objective and it’s 8 AM ET, then you’ll still have 59 minutes to finish the quest up and become eligible for the next one. Make sure to check back here as each quest goes live for guides on how to complete them and claim that Secret Sledge Pickaxe for yourself.

Not all of us are Doomguy, ready to go into a room full of murderous demons with a shotgun and send them back to Hell. Some of us, instead, prefer to exist in the shadows, finding creative ways to avoid conflict or defeat enemies before they ever realize we’re there. Luckily, there have been plenty of fantastic stealth games released over the years that offer just that, often with their own unique twists like supernatural abilities or high-tech equipment.

For the best stealth games of all time (in no particular order), we looked at several decades of potential inclusions, ranging from the pure, classic stealth of early Splinter Cell games all the way to the chaotic creative stealth of Hitman. If you’re in the mood to get sneaky, definitely check these games out.

Dishonored

Equal parts Bioshock and Thief but without feeling like a ripoff of either, Arkane’s Dishonored is a tremendous stealth-action game because it encourages experimentation. Not only can you go through the game with non-lethal strategies, but you can also cause mass chaos and destruction without ever having to give away your own position. Transforming into a rat, moving into a concealed position, and then sending a swarm of bloodthirsty rats to devour a nearby guard will never not be a joy, and exploring every nook and cranny of Dunwall is half of the fun.

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory

The third game in the Splinter Cell series–released just three years after the first–Splinter Cell: Chaos Theory nonetheless managed to take stealth-espionage to the next level. A new hacking minigame gave Sam Fisher yet another way to get the jump on his enemies without going guns blazing, with access to files and building systems hidden behind lines of code. Sam’s knife and customizable gearset let different types of players experiment and develop their perfect loadout, and the visuals were better than ever. Spies vs. Mercs and a cooperative campaign were also included, cementing Chaos Theory as one of the best games to ever bear the Clancy name.

Splinter Cell Blacklist

Splinter Cell Blacklist

Released after a long hiatus, Splinter Cell Blacklist feels like a combination of Chaos Theory’s perfected classic stealth and the more aggressive stealth-action of Conviction. With three distinct playstyles called Ghost, Panther, and Assault, there is a way to tackle every objective regardless of how much stealth experience you have, and the enhanced Mark & Execute ability lets Sam Fisher operate as a ruthlessly efficient agent of death. It’s streamlined and faster than the past games, which doesn’t appeal to everyone, but Blacklist is an excellent example of how stealth games don’t need to move at a snail’s pace to still be stealth games.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain

The Metal Gear Solid games were pioneers in the modern stealth genre, but… they didn’t always play all that well, especially the first few. With Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, that changed drastically. One of the best stealth-action games of all time, The Phantom Pain borders on immersive sim with its in-world storytelling, and its emergent gameplay structure lets you feel like you’re Big Boss on a mission, gathering intel rather than having it spoonfed to you at key points. Capturing enemies to add to your army and making use of key companions further enhances your abilities, and the only real limit to what you can do in a mission is your imagination.

Mark of the Ninja

Mark of the Ninja

Stealth isn’t limited to just 3D games, and Klei proved that in a big way with Mark of the Ninja. A Saturday-morning-cartoon aesthetic is a perfect fit for this surprisingly hardcore stealth game, which requires excellent timing and careful planning in order to avoid getting spotted and eliminate enemies. However, it’s far from overwhelming, serving as a great starting point for stealth newcomers and an excellent change of pace for those more used to the realistic visuals of so many other stealth games. Plus, who doesn’t love stabbing dudes in the chest as a ninja?

Hitman 3

Hitman 3

No stealth series embraces the absurd more than Hitman, and IO Interactive leaned into that especially hard for Hitman 3. Like its two recent predecessors, Hitman 3 features a number of open-ended levels with objectives you can tackle in nearly any order–and in dozens of different ways. Sure, you can go up to your target and put a silenced pistol round in their skull, but why do that when you can get them to accidentally kill themselves via a botched photoshoot? In a series that once let you eject someone from a fighter jet a thousand feet into the air instead of just gunning him down, it’s always best to think outside the box.

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood

The Assassin’s Creed series has taken a few different forms over the years, ranging from the simple social-stealth gameplay of the original to the full-on RPG of Odyssey and Valhalla. In Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Ubisoft really hit its stride by offering smooth, polished stealth–often intertwined with direct combat–and the titular Brotherhood system. Rather than conquer a mission alone, the game lets Ezio use his recruits to assassinate targets–taking out your primary foe while your buddies leap from the rooftop and eliminate the guards is a joy, and one that very few stealth games have copied since then.

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Sly Cooper and the Thievius Raccoonus

Though we chose the first game in the series for this list, we truly could have picked any of the Sly Cooper games and they would have deserved it. Appropriate for younger players–as long as you don’t mind stealing–and combining stealth elements with simple platforming, Sly Cooper is a unique series that exemplifies the mascot-heavy days of the PS2. Joined by his partners in (literal) crime, Sly Cooper is a master of stealth and traversal, and the game’s de-emphasis of direct combat stands in stark contrast to many other games of the era. It was followed by two sequels on the PS2 and a third on the PS3 and PS Vita, and we’re eager to go on another adventure with the cute little guy.

The Last of Us

The Last of Us

Not a pure stealth game–there are definitely moments of all-out action–The Last of Us nonetheless qualifies because of how well it handles its stealth moments. Whether it’s trying to avoid a group of Clickers via distracting glass bottles or trying to take out bandits without any of them realizing you’re there, The Last of Us favors smart play and avoiding conflict over slick gunplay. This can even be the case in the middle of an all-out firefight, with Joel capable of slipping away, flanking targets without them realizing he’s left, and ambushing them with a gadget or two.

Gunpoint

Gunpoint

Some of the best stealth games blend other genres together to create something that would simply be impossible in the traditional action-adventure framework. That’s the case with Gunpoint, a retro-style puzzle-platformer that is more about finding the solution to a problem than it is avoiding enemies and traps on the fly. The primary way you’ll do this is with the Crosslink tool, which lets you change security systems for your own benefit. But just because it’s a puzzle game doesn’t mean there is only one solution, giving you incentive to replay levels and figure out the cleverest ways to make it through each challenge.
