Hot Drop is GameSpot’s weekly Apex Legends column, in which Jordan Ramée takes a closer look at Respawn’s battle royale to provide additional insight into the game’s evolution, as well as dive deeper into its episodic storytelling and characters.

As more and more developers cleverly adopt the episodic storytelling of TV to create interesting storylines for their service games, it’s becoming ever more clear that the differing media don’t quite translate when it comes to hero shooters. As this is an Apex Legends column, I’m going to be talking about this topic within the context of Respawn’s battle royale game, but it’s important to note that this issue persists in pretty much every service game that uses hero characters.

The issue in question is the inherent immortality of the main characters for hero-focused service games. The structure of a service game is designed with longevity in mind–these are experiences that are meant to be played for years after release. As such, the stories for these games need to be written in a way that allows them to continue for years without drastic changes that would change how the games play.

That also means that the main characters of these stories typically have to exist in some sort of narrative rut. This structure would work if Apex Legends was a comedy–comedy-focused television series can get away with this structure, as it creates an established starting point for setting up skits or jokes in future episodes–but it falters when it comes to something more story-driven like a drama. Because in Apex Legends, that means that whatever situation has caused these characters to engage in the game’s plot at launch needs to remain so that the character will too. And so there’s less forward momentum to these characters’ growth.

For example, Respawn can’t write that Loba gives up on fighting Revenant to focus on building the type of family that was taken from her with her girlfriend, nor can the studio come up with a way for Horizon to successfully travel back in time and be together with her son again. These outcomes would narratively lead to these characters leaving the Apex Games.

On paper, seeing a few characters leave the Apex Games might sound fine. In fact, it would be an incredible way of injecting a dramatic shake-up to the story. But these are characters that people have paid money for and then possibly bought dozens of cosmetics for. To remove them from the game would be foolish–there would be vocal outcry from the community if they lost access to a character they’ve potentially poured hundreds of hours and real money into.

If Respawn ever killed Octane, and I lost access to playing a character I’ve enjoyed using since October 2019 and spent a good $300 USD on, I’d be pissed. I don’t think I’d play Apex Legends anymore.

And could Respawn just kill off Octane and keep him around as part of the game? Sure. But if he’s dead, suddenly you have a character who isn’t a part of Quest anymore and doesn’t have unique in-match reactive voice lines that evolve depending on the on-goings of Quest and the story at large, and suddenly he’s not as exciting a character to play.

This has always been the largest problem that Apex Legends’ story faces, and it’s recently popped up again with The Williams Sendoff, which combines in-game challenges, radio plays, and a brief single-player segment to tell a Bangalore-focused story.

The Williams Sendoff is excellent–probably my favorite addition to Apex Legends’ storytelling since the introduction of Quest in Season 5: Fortune’s Favor. Erica Luttrell absolutely kills in her performance of Bangalore, who slowly begins to spiral as her world falls apart.

But as good as The Williams Sendoff is, it also suffers from the one major issue that Apex Legends’ storytelling has always had: the knowledge that no storyline is going to end with one of the playable characters dying or leaving the Apex Games.

This fact doesn’t detract from the storytelling chops on display for the majority of The Williams Sendoff. Seeing Wraith gently squeeze Bangalore’s hand as she cries over the news that Jackson is dead is heartbreaking. Witnessing Jackson’s vain attempts to make his sister love the Outlands as much as he does adds an extra twinge of tragedy to Bangalore being stranded there alone. Watching Loba aggressively tell off Bangalore, the woman she loves, while both women are clearly hurting is compellingly frustrating–especially since the misunderstanding between the two has been exacerbated by Revenant’s cruel meddling.

But that final moment, in which Bangalore agrees to take Revenant’s money in order to return back to Gridiron and see her family, loses impact because we all know that there’s no way in hell Bangalore and Revenant get on that ship to head back to the Core Systems. Respawn will not write a story that has two playable characters suddenly no longer be playable, so Bangalore and Revenant have to stay in the Apex Games.

It takes out some of the narrative bite of The Williams Sendoff–the realization that, in the end, very little of this development is going to lead to meaningful change. Something is going to happen so that Bangalore and Revenant stay in the Apex Games, and so Loba will continue wrestling with her feelings for Bangalore and hatred for Revenant. Not away from the two, of course, in a healthy manner–she has to stay in the Apex Games, too, as a playable character.

The big issue is that all of the most compelling storylines in Apex Legends center around at least one of the playable legends. The ongoing situation with Salvo involves Fuse and Mad Maggie. Hammond Industries’ continued colonization of the Outer Worlds is important to Bloodhound. Duardo Silva’s efforts to take over the Syndicate are important to Octane and Lifeline, and just anything to do with the Syndicate in general typically involves Crypto, Wattson, Caustic, and Revenant. And every legend has their own personal quest, a reason for being in the Apex Games in the first place. Their stories are Apex Legends’ stories.

I think the easiest way to address this issue would be for Apex Legends to no longer be a hero shooter. Not in the literal sense–the battle royale’s gameplay is centered around hero shooter mechanics. But instead of being a shooter about heroes, it should just be a shooter about people. Respawn needs to promote the importance of characters who are not the legends.

Characters like Blisk, Mystik, Lisa Stone, Newton, “Big Sister,” Jaime, Frances, Mila, Grace Rasheed, and Maldera all have the potential for being protagonists or antagonists–I’d mention Bangalore’s brother, Jackson, but I’m pretty sure he’s Newcastle. But that’s what Apex Legends needs; protagonists and antagonists who can die or triumph or move on. And these characters don’t need to always be in Apex Legends, so they have actual potential in where their stories can go.

Making heroes and villains of the legends ensures that Apex Legends’ conflicts will never have meaningful conclusions–the legends will remain in the Apex Games until Respawn shutters Apex Legends and abandons its servers (which will sadly happen one day). The legends can (and should!) be a part of the story but they shouldn’t be the focus.

Just look at service games like Final Fantasy XIV or Destiny 2, where players are a part of the ongoing narrative but they are not the actual heroes of the story. Players love their Guardians and their Warriors of Light, but the action also happens around those characters, ensuring that the playable character is always going to be there, but that there are still stakes because there are non-playable characters that Bungie and Square Enix can do with as they please.

Major characters who have been in Destiny 2 since the days of Destiny 1 can die or switch sides or straight up disappear (only to reappear months later), all in the service of creating compelling storylines that Bungie has built over the course of years. That is what TV shows do.

Respawn hasn’t managed that with Apex Legends, because so much of the story hinges on the fact that all of its main characters must, somehow, always be competing in the Apex Games. They can meet new people, explore new planets, suffer from disease, fall in or out of love, discover long-lost family, or whatever else Respawn has cooking, but it must always come back to one conclusion: These characters are never going to stop competing in the Apex Games. I suppose Respawn could have the group join a different blood sport that just happens to have the exact same rules, but that’s not a meaningful development. Not in the same way that games like Destiny 2 and Final Fantasy XVI have become altogether different beasts from where they started.

Until Apex Legends gets protagonists and antagonists to care about outside of the playable legends, it’s always going to fall a bit short in comparison to the narrative-driven service games around it.

The latest speedrun of Elden Ring has seen the game completed in its quickest time yet, as YouTuber MitChriz achieved this feat in under 13 minutes.

Playing on PC, MitChriz’s accomplished the blisteringly quick time in an Any% run, which allows for glitches and exploits to be counted. Using a combination of tricks to zip across the map, avoid roving mobs of enemies, and grabbing some handy gear along the way, MitChriz’s weaved through bosses like Malekith the Black Blade and Hoarah Loux to clinch a 12:32 completion time. A world’s first, according to the YouTuber.

Since it launched last month, Elden Ring has become a trendy game for speedrunners to explore. It wasn’t long before hours of experimentation by the community saw the game beaten in under an hour, with that record being surpassed by new attempts. For another impressive feat, there’s a recent no-damage run by Twitch streamer Seki that makes for three hours of intense entertainment.

if you’re planning to play Elden Ring regularly though, it should take you around 50 hours to beat its main campaign–if you’re skilled enough and avoid optional bosses–and 120 hours to grab a completionist trophy according to website How Long To Beat. That time might need to be adjusted now that Starscourge Radahn is a powerful threat again.

Elden Ring has been a huge hit for developer From Software and publisher Bandai Namco, as it has been the most-downloaded game on the PlayStation Network for both February and March. That’s not too surprising, given that it has sold more than 12 million copies overall.

Metroid Dread has added a Boss Rush mode in its latest free update, which has gone live according to Nintendo.

The mode allows you to take on a gauntlet of bosses, and while missile stock will be refreshed between each battle, Samus Aran will carry any damage with her into the next battle. For every boss that is defeated, Samus can upgrade her stats and arsenal.

Time to put your skills to the test again, bounty hunters. The new Boss Rush mode is available now in #MetroidDread!
Fight Samus’ most formidable foes one-after-another & go for the best time possible! The mode is available once you’ve completed the game.https://t.co/Lyb3rLjdVs pic.twitter.com/MP1NlUIgwO

— Nintendo of America (@NintendoAmerica) April 8, 2022

Survival Rush has also been added, although this differs from Boss Rush mode as you’ll have limited time to destroy as many enemies as possible. Missiles and health will not be replenished between rounds, but each successful boss encounter will add more time to your clock.

If that’s not challenging enough, Dread Mode has been updated with its own Boss Rush challenge. You’ll need to not only take on 12 bosses but do so without taking a single hit or it’s game over. There will be a practice mode available to warm up in before you take on Metroid Dread’s most lethal challenge.

Nintendo previously added a free update to Metroid Dread in February, which expanded the game with two new difficulty modes. This included the aforementioned Dread Mode and its one-hit-kill element, as well as its exact opposite Rookie Mode and its more approachable difficulty.

Metroid Dread launched in October last year alongside the Nintendo Switch OLED Model. Positive sales gave it “the best start for any Metroid game ever,” according to Nintendo of America president Doug Bowser, and reviews have been highly positive so far.

In GameSpot’s Metroid Dread review, Steven Petite gave it an 8/10, writing, “More than anything else, Metroid Dread feels like going back to a place of comfort after a long time away. Though the gameplay is refined and new features have been added to the mix, Dread sticks closely to the formula of its predecessors. In the end, for longtime fans like myself, that’s probably for the best. There’s nothing to dread here. We’re home again.”

Epic’s Unreal Engine 5 was fully released this week, and one developer has already begun using the software to create a Superman-style game from The Matrix-themed City Sample asset pack.

While the hero in video game tech artist Volod’s flight demo doesn’t bear any resemblance to the Man of Steel physically, he does have a similar powerset and can fly around the city at a velocity that is likely faster than a speeding bullet.

“If I can find an interesting gameplay loop that ties into the flight mechanic, I’d consider putting together a minimum viable product or demo and releasing it to the public,” Volod said to Kotaku. “But obviously without the association to the Superman IP.”

The assets that Volod used to create the Not-Superman simulator were used in last year’s Matrix Awakens tech demo for Xbox Series X|S and PS5. In addition to a brief car chase sequence, the demo allows players to explore a city that shows off new buildings, vehicles, and crowd technologies, as well as other signature tools within Unreal Engine 5 like the Lumen lighting system and Nanite virtualized geometry.

The official full release of Unreal Engine 5 has seen a number of big announcements so far. CD Projekt Red will develop its next Witcher game with the software, a new Tomb Raider game from Crystal Dynamics has entered production, and dozens of other studios are also creating projects within the powerful suite of development tools.

While the last solo Superman outing was 2006’s Superman Returns movie tie-in game, the Kryptonian has been featured in a number of other games over the years like Injustice 2 and Lego Batman 3: Beyond Gotham.

You’ll be able play as him in crossover fighting game Multiversus next year–with Sephiroth voice actor George Newbern returning to the iconic role–and you’ll be tasked with taking him down in Rocksteady’s Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League.

After weeks of useless Exotic and Legendary armor rolls, Xur’s inventory has finally been fixed in Destiny 2. That means you’re going to want to visit the weekend vendor and take advantage of what he’s selling this week, especially since we’re about to enter another phase of the Iron Banner. Here’s where you can find Xur and what Exotics he’s selling this week.

Xur arrives in the solar system with the Friday reset, so we’ll update this article when he touches down.

Xur is present every weekend in Destiny 2, starting with the daily reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET each Friday. His exact location is always a mystery when he first arrives, as he is not listed on the map, and for novice players, he can be easy to miss. However, there are a set number of locations where he takes up residence, including the Tower Hangar area, on Nessus in Watcher’s Grave, and in the Winding Cove area of the EDZ.

Alongside changes in his location, Xur’s inventory also rotates weekly. That means it’s worth visiting him each time to check out his new weapons and rolls on Exotic and Legendary armor. You can visit him any time between his arrival Friday and the weekly reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET the following Tuesday when Xur departs the solar system.

Like all Lego game titles, Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga is crammed full of unlockable content, Easter Eggs, and silly gags but it’s going to take a lot of time and energy to see it all — unless you take note of our beginner’s tips, which will help your brick-busting action and exploration stay one with the force. Here are the best tips that we recommend for your journey through The Skywalker Saga.

Stay on target

Cheat Codes and playing with a friend will certainly help you on your journey to unlocking the 380+ characters and seeing all of the magical Star Wars moments, but keep your sights on Story Mode until you’ve seen it through to the very end.

The Skywalker Saga contains all kinds of different areas and situations that are only accessible with specific characters and/or character types. Switching between characters is pretty easy, especially once your Jedi reflexes get used to navigating the Holocron, but the real game begins after assembling a team with different heroes and villains.

Revisiting areas as characters that were not originally there during your first run through Story Mode can unlock all sorts of Easter eggs, which should be a real treat for fans well acquainted with the universe. There are also doors, paths, and items that can only be accessed with unlocked characters, many of which can be obtained by simply completing all nine story episodes.

Stormtroopers and other bad boys won’t attack you if you’re on their side.

Characters can also be unlocked via other means, like in-game purchases, paid DLC, and discovering rumors through talking with NPCs, but completing each film’s standard story mode will yield a ridiculous amount of characters.

Then you can start over fresh in Free Play mode with all of your hard-earned unlocks. You can stop your full story playthrough in between episodes, which can be tempting, but you’ll often find yourself hitting brick (heh) walls that can’t be passed without a locked character before too long.

Stay on target and finish the full story. It’s worth it and will make your post-game quests so much easier.

Exploration is easier without the threat of higher ground

The Star Wars universe is replicated pretty well in its newest LEGO form, but that also includes cliffsides, giant hills, and a myriad of other high grounds that are enough to make Anakin Skywalker nervous.

Make sure to check the game’s Accessibility Settings before starting (or at any time by pausing the game) and check the Fall Recovery box.

Now, instead of falling to your death and suffering a Stud penalty, you’ll be teleported to your last safe location without losing any precious loot. While you’re there, I’d also recommend turning on the Subtitles, unless you prefer the retro approach, which is always possible with the game’s Mumble Mode.

Focus on grabbing these upgrades as soon as possible

The Skywalker Saga features a pretty robust upgrade system that covers both general and class-specific attributes and abilities. While the latest Lego Star Wars outing isn’t incredibly difficult, it can be a much more fun game to play with the right upgrades equipped. We recommend unlocking the following upgrades as soon as possible:

Attract Studs can be upgraded more than once and you definitely should do so as often as possible. The upgrade turns your LEGO figures into all-powerful magnetic plastic that pulls in Studs without needing to physically touch them. This will make you rich while also saving you tons of time, especially if you ignore the previous tip and fall to your death. This ability will often pull in all of the studs lost from a deadly fall or other grisly fate.

Do droids dream of electric tauntauns?

Hero/Villain Terminal Expert needs to be unlocked twice, once for each moral faction, but it’s definitely worth it. There are terminals in every level and with these upgrades, you’ll unlock Studs with each successful hack. Or you can skip them entirely if that’s your preference. Either way, you’re making money or saving time.

Counter Cash gives you extra studs for successful counters in combat, which can make fights more thoughtful and strategic, adding even more incentive to stay focused in a game that’s not incredibly difficult. This improves combat in my opinion, while also making you extra money.

Collectible Detector highlights important pick-ups with an on-screen marker. There is an endless amount of things to discover and collect in The Skywalker Saga; don’t wait until the very end of your playthrough to make it easier on yourself. The ability can be deactivated from the upgrade menu whenever you’re not actively using it, which is helpful because the screen can get pretty busy, especially after you level up the ability a few times.

Unlock Stud Multipliers with Datacards

Tucked away within the Extras menu are Stud Multipliers, which can be unlocked by finding Datacards throughout the Star Wars universe. There are a few different Stud Multipliers to unlock, and they can all stack.

It’s profitable and exciting destroying giant fascist weapons.

Unlocking the x2, x4, x6, x8, and x10 multipliers will increase the value of each and every Stud piece you pick up. This can quickly add up on the game’s more chaotic levels, such as the battle against the Death Star, where there are seemingly limitless things to blow up. The results are even more lucrative when combined with the next tip.

Break Stuff

There is nothing you can break that won’t help you. Break every single thing you can to receive even more Stud pieces. Sometimes you’ll even discover secrets, like useful items or weapons that can be built to help you against enemies and obstacles. You don’t have to break everything but there’s no reason not to either. The results are even more astonishing when you combine constant destruction with Stud multipliers and the Stud Attract upgrade.

Drop in and drop out when you’ve grabbed what you need to

Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga saves your game constantly, including when new collectibles are acquired. There is no reason to finish levels after getting what you came for, unless you really want to, but it’s not like there’s a shortage of content to discover. Jump back into the Holocron to change levels or even episodes entirely whenever you collect the treasure you came for. The Skywalker Saga is packed with unlockables, so it’s nice the game doesn’t force you to needlessly complete story content again and again along the way.

Call of Duty: Warzone‘s Rebirth Reinforced event is still in full swing on Rebirth Island, and the fourth community challenge is now live and teasing a “Golden Vault” mystery.

Mysterious bunkers aren’t new to Call of Duty: Warzone, as the battle royale’s original Verdansk map also launched with bunker Easter eggs of its own. However, three “golden” vaults were added to Rebirth Island with Season 2 Reloaded’s major map update. The vaults are still currently locked, but a new challenge is now live in the Rebirth Reinforced event to let players work towards a community goal of unlocking them.

Rebirth Reinforced Golden Vault challenge

The currently locked vaults can be found by visiting the underground area near the Nova 6 factory, the cliffside between the Stronghold and the Living Quarters area of the map, and a third is below the shack found between the Dock and Bioweapons Lab.

It’s uncertain what will be waiting for players inside Rebirth island’s locked bunkers. It’s possible the vaults will just contain high-tier weapons, armor, and killstreaks like the past Verdansk bunkers, or it could be the start of a larger Easter egg event to close out Season 2 and Rebirth Reinforced. As a community, players must work to collect $40 trillion in cash within Rebirth Island’s Rebirth Blood Money Quads playlist. Completing this challenge awards participants with 100,000 XP and reveals the Golden Vault mystery. $40 trillion sounds like a lot of moolah, but players have already accumulated nearly $8 trillion towards the total goal in just a few hours of the challenge being unlocked.

Additionally, double XP is active for the new Rebirth Blood Money Quads playlist until April 14. Call of Duty also has a double battle pass XP event that is live across both Vanguard and Warzone from now until April 13.
