Xur returns to Destiny 2 this weekend with a new slate of Exotic weapons and armor for your perusal, and it’s a great time to hit him up with the Guardian Games starting next week. You’re going to want the best gear you can get for Destiny’s annual competition between the classes, especially with a great-sounding new submachine gun available to claim along the way. Here’s where you can find Xur this weekend and what he’s selling.

Xur returns to the solar system with the daily reset Friday, so we’ll update this article as soon as he arrives.

Xur is present every weekend in Destiny 2, starting with the daily reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET each Friday. His exact location is always a mystery when he first arrives, as he is not listed on the map, and for novice players, he can be easy to miss. However, there are a set number of locations where he takes up residence, including the Tower Hangar area, on Nessus in Watcher’s Grave, and in the Winding Cove area of the EDZ.

Alongside changes in his location, Xur’s inventory also rotates weekly. That means it’s worth visiting him each time to check out his new weapons and rolls on Exotic and Legendary armor. You can visit him any time between his arrival Friday and the weekly reset at 10 AM PT / 1 PM ET the following Tuesday when Xur departs the Solar System.

Hot Drop is GameSpot’s weekly Apex Legends column, in which Jordan Ramée takes a closer look at Respawn’s battle royale to provide additional insight into the game’s evolution, as well as dive deeper into its episodic storytelling and characters.

The launch trailer for Apex Legends Season 13: Saviors hides quite a few references and Easter eggs. It also introduces us to the season’s new playable character–it’s Newcastle, Bangalore’s brother. Below, we breakdown 13 hidden shoutouts secreted away in the Saviors launch trailer.

If you like what you read, I’d appreciate it if you checked out some of my other Apex Legends articles, like my theory about how Apex Legends is heading towards all-out war. I also think that Respawn tends to focus a bit too much on developing Apex Legends’ storyline through the legends, and should change the narrative so that the battle royale no longer focuses on its heroes. There was also that giant Apex Legends leak from a while back–though I’m sure it’s mostly accurate, I’m not convinced we can trust any of the nine leaked legends beyond Newcastle and Vantage.

And Revenant

At 0:05, you can see Pathfinder putting up a sign in the back of the party that says, “And Revenant,” marking the event as a send-off for both Bangalore and Revenant. You could see Pathfinder making this sign in an earlier Season 13 teaser, where Wraith, Rampart, and Pathfinder are putting together party decorations.

Even if everyone else hates Revenant, it’s charming to see Pathfinder’s ever-present good nature pushes him to continue to try to connect with the murder robot “brother” that wants nothing to do with him.

Wattson’s punny dance moves

It appears that Wattson can’t stop herself from committing to a good pun, even when she’s dancing. At 0:05, the static defender can be seen doing the electric slide at the party, likely in reference to her electric-based abilities.

Nessie beer

Also at 0:10, you can see that there’s a Nessie on the label of the beer that Bangalore is drinking (you can see it again and more clearly at 0:21). Respawn hides Nessies in almost every Apex Legends trailer and promotion, and they’re typically found in secret locations on the in-game maps as well.

“40 tries to get in the Games”

In response to being called a young buck that needs to be kept safe, Mirage retorts that Newcastle is clearly an inexperienced fighter as it took him like “40 tries to get in the Games.” It has taken Newcastle a long time to get into the Apex Games–we first heard about his efforts to join the bloodsport ahead of Season 4. He came in second place in the qualifiers behind Forge. When Forge was killed, Newcastle should have been next in line to compete but the Syndicate placed Revenant in the Games instead. It stands to reason that Newcastle has continued to try to get into the Apex Games in the eight seasons since then and has repeatedly failed.

The security protocol

At 1:15, the approaching sea creature activates a security protocol, raising a structure from beneath the sand. On the side of the building, it reads “IMC Armory,” meaning the security protocol dates back to the day of the IMC. The IMC departed the Outlands between 2713-2719, and Apex Legends’ story begins in 2733, so it’s been a while since this armory has seen the light of day.

“Nothing good can come from this place”

At 1:16, Newcastle gives his first impression of Storm Point, saying, “Nothing good can come from this place.” That is–word-for-word–what Bangalore says to Mirage when first reaching Storm Point in the Season 11 launch trailer. This likely explains why Mirage looks at Bangalore in confusion–he’s wondering how Newcastle and Bangalore would have reacted to seeing Storm Point in the same way.

Newcastle’s abilities

It looks like that giant Apex Legends leak was right about Newcastle because we see him use the exact abilities in this trailer that were revealed in said leak.

At 1:24, we get our first look at what’s likely Newcastle’s tactical ability. He deploys a shield in front of him to block incoming fire.

At 2:27, we see what’s likely to be Newcastle’s passive ability. When Pathfinder goes down, Newcastle drags him to safety while also shielding Pathfinder from any attack.

And at 2:40, we get our first look at what’s likely Newcastle’s ultimate ability. Leaping into the air, Newcastle slams his shield into the ground, which expands into a protective wall to save Bangalore from the monstrous crustacean’s laser beam attack.

Equipment upgrade

Upon Bangalore entering the IMC Armory, you can view a computer screen on the far wall at 1:33. The screen says, “Engage console for equipment upgrade,” which possibly hints that this armory is more than just a place to house weapons. It’s possible that the armory can upgrade a legend’s equipment as well–that would be a compelling addition to the battle royale.

Yup, that’s a Spitfire

At 1:34, Bangalore walks past a Spitfire to take a Havoc. Ignoring her terrible logic for just a moment, the existence of the Spitfire on the wall rack may be a hint that the devastating LMG is rotating out of Care Packages in Season 13 and rejoining the ground loot.

Also seen in the IMC Armory: Hemlok, Flatline, Rampage, Mastiff, Peacekeeper, R-99, Longbow, L-Star, R-301, and CAR. Pretty much every type of gun, save for pistols.

As a side note, it’s weird that there’s a Rampage in there, right? Like, Rampart made that gun–how is it possible that Newcastle and Bangalore could find one in an IMC Armory that’s presumably been underground for longer than Rampart has been alive?

Williams takedown

At 1:50, we’re given another clue that Newcastle is really Jackson. Having run out of ammo, Newcastle tackles the remaining Spectre and Bangalore finishes it off by stabbing it in the chest with her heirloom knife. The move is the exact same one that the duo took down an enemy Pilot with during the Stories from the Outlands: Gridiron trailer.

“Checkmate”

At 3:08, we get another clue that Newcastle is really Jackson Williams. Upon defeating the creature, Newcastle plants his shield in the ground and says, “Checkmate.” This is what someone says when they’ve moved into a winning position in chess.

Newcastle’s name could be a play on a “rook,” a chess piece that looks like the rampart of a castle. In Stories from the Outlands: Gridiron, when Bangalore angrily confronts her brother for lying to her, Jackson has just lost a match of chess. The only opposing piece he managed to capture is sitting right in front of him, and it’s a rook.

Valkyrie’s greatest fear

At 3:16, Valkyrie looks up at Loba, who is longingly looking at Bangalore and not Valkyrie, her actual girlfriend. Though Valkyrie doesn’t say anything, the look does give off an air of worry–like she’s realized that Loba is still in love with Bangalore. This ties into Valkyrie’s greatest fear.

Every Halloween, the legends celebrate by traveling to another universe–one where Revenant killed everyone and rules the Outlands as a shadowy god. This past Halloween, we learned that this Revenant can glean a person’s greatest fears if they fall in battle and are reborn as one of his shadows, and he uses this knowledge to mock those who enter his domain.

When she becomes one of his shadows, this Revenant tells Valkyrie, “Daddy’s little girl? Until his boss has a job for him. Loba’s second chance? At least, until her first love comes crawling back. Face it Kairi, this new look is perfect. After all, you spent your whole life in someone else’s shadow.”

Bottlecaps

At 3:21, Newcastle hides away a bracelet of bottle caps–the final and most damning clue that he’s really Jackson Williams. In Pathfinder’s Quest, we learned that the Williams family has a tradition. Before being deployed into military service, a family member is celebrated. When the party dies down, the immediate family for the person getting deployed gather together for one last beer. The bottlecaps from those last moments are put onto a leather string and then given to the person being deployed.

“We make a leather bracelet and put it on the wrist of the person leaving,” Bangalore tells Pathfinder in the book. “The bottle cap from the last beer you had with your family. A piece of us is with them, wherever they go in the galaxy.”

Kicking off our coverage of the first earnings season of the year for the tech industry, we as always start with Intel. The blue-hued blue-chip company is the first out of the gate to report their results for the first quarter of 2022, with Intel reporting something of a mixed quarter. With revenue down on a yearly basis – thanks in large part to softer client sales – Intel is no longer on a hot streak of setting records. At the same time, however, the company has dialed back its lofty expectations accordingly, and as a result was still able to slightly edge out its Q1 guidance.

For the first quarter of 2022, Intel booked $18.4B in revenue, a drop of 7% from the year-ago quarter. Buffering the company against this revenue drop on a GAAP basis has been an improvement in both operating income and net income, both of which benefitted from some one-off restructuring and investment gains (McAfee equity sale). As a result, Intel booked $8.1B in net income on a GAAP basis, which is a 141% improvement on the year. Otherwise, stripping things back to non-GAAP financials, things more closely mirror the overall revenue picture with a 35% decline in income.

Amazon Prime Day will return to its normal July slot this summer, Amazon revealed during its Q1 earnings call. Prime Day 2022, one of the biggest sales events of the year, has been running annually since 2015, but this will be the first time since 2019 that the event will be held in July.

For the first five years of its existence, Prime Day always took place in mid-July. The COVID-19 pandemic upended worldwide distribution of products and caused Amazon to delay Prime Day 2020 to October. In 2021, Prime Day took place in June, shortly after E3 2021 (which may have been the last E3).

While Amazon only revealed the July window for Prime Day 2022, we can make some educated guesses on other important details. Since 2017, Prime Day has been a 48-hour event sales event, with new limited-time deals popping up around the clock. Prime Day tends to start on a Monday, so if we had to guess we’d say this year’s event will take place July 11-12 or July 17-18. Amazon usually doesn’t confirm definitive times for events like Prime Day until a few weeks prior to the sale, so we’ll probably have to wait a couple months to get the official dates.

As its name suggests, Prime Day is an exclusive shopping event for Amazon Prime members. It always features deals across practically every category, including gaming, tech, entertainment, and much more. Leading up to Prime Day last year, Amazon offered a couple of different promotions that allowed members to get coupons for an additional $10 off products during Prime Day, so it’s possible we could see cool perks like that again this year.

If you’re not an Amazon Prime member, new members can sign up for a free 30-day trial. But those who aren’t Prime members will also be able to shop plenty of deals at competing retailers. Every major retailer runs an anti-Prime Day event to try to steal some of Amazon’s thunder. You can expect deals at Walmart, Best Buy, GameStop, Target, and more during the Prime Day festivities.

Rogue Legacy 2 has arrived, following an extended period of being in Steam Early Access. Like the first game, the adventure revolves around a family of heroes all pursuing the same goal, with randomized traits that can make your runs easier, harder, or even just funnier. It takes a whole family and dozens of generations to take down the ultimate evil, so here are some tips to get you started in Rogue Legacy 2.

Familiarize yourself with new powers

When you start a new run, you’ll have your new standard weapon, along with two other abilities. These usually follow a pattern set by your class, but they can also be randomized. The last thing you need is to hit a button expecting a certain power to proc and then finding yourself surprised by some completely different effect. So before you start exploring the castle in earnest, take a few moments to familiarize yourself with your abilities, possibly even triggering them to get a feel for their range and speed.

Invest in skill tree unlocks that earn money

Money makes the world go around in Rogue Legacy 2, and the more money you can make and keep between runs means the faster you’ll be able to upgrade everything else. For that reason, it’s important to prioritize money-making. Obviously you’ll need to invest in other unlocks like new classes, passive upgrades, and gear. But if an opportunity to enhance your cashflow presents itself, get that one first.

But also, unlock job classes

Job classes are much more robust in Rogue Legacy 2, and you’ll want to unlock them as fast as possible to inject a nice amount of variety to your play. Some will only become available to unlock after reaching a certain level of upgrades by grabbing other things first, but once you do unlock the ability to buy a class, you’ll probably want to grab it. At that point you’ll have the option to switch to your new class, which will retain the traits of the last one you selected.

A gold bonus means danger

For much of the beginning of Rogue Legacy 2, you won’t exactly know what your family’s passive traits actually do. They’re given funny names and obscured behind question marks. You need to try them once, and then they’ll be listed for all future generations. If you’re going in blind and simply don’t know which abilities are which, keep in mind that a gold bonus is given for traits that hamper you in some way. So if you see a gold bonus attached to one of your heirs, whatever trait they have will make the run more dangerous.

Seek out Heirlooms first

Rogue Legacy 2 is a rogue-lite, but it also has a bit of Metroidvania in the mix through the use of Heirlooms. These special items are locked behind special trials, and once you earn them their power applies to all future generations. For example, the first one most players will find is the air dash, which has applications for both platforming and combat. Another, Echo’s Flight, is required to explore the Axis Mundi area and can be found in a trial right near the beginning of that area. Heirloom trials don’t always present themselves, but when they do, go for it. Your HP and MP will be fully refilled, so you’ll always have a decent shot at finishing it.

In Rogue Legacy 2, dying is part of winning, so embrace it.

The castle follows a general layout pattern

While the castle mysteriously randomizes itself between each run, you’ll quickly notice that certain aspects repeat themselves–in particular, the general layout of areas in relation to each other. The aforementioned Axis Mundi, for example, is always on the far east side of the starting area, requiring you to essentially go forward like a traditional platformer to find it. A particularly difficult area is tucked below for daring adventures, and so on. Once you have a good grasp of where all the areas are in relation to each other, you can navigate the castle a little more easily and avoid the spots you aren’t ready for.

Walk away from combat if necessary

Sometimes a swirling red door or a combat trial switch will present itself. You’ll want to help yourself to those rewards, of course, but what if your health is low? Just walk away and come back later! The castle is littered with teleporters so you can always come back after you’ve found some healing items. Don’t feel like you need to charge head-first into a combat scenario you can’t handle just because you happen to be there at the time.

Use House Rules if you need to

Rogue Legacy 2 is challenging, but you have the opportunity to tweak the difficulty to your liking with House Rules. Using these sliders you can increase the amount of damage enemies take, decrease the amount you take, and more. None of this is enough to make the game a cakewalk, but you’ll be able to ease up the burden if you find yourself getting too frustrated.

Accept that you’ll make incremental progress

Like the first game, Rogue Legacy 2 is a game about making slow steady progress across generations. You aren’t going to finish it on your first (or likely your tenth) run. Instead, each run will get you just a little bit closer to your goal. Death isn’t the end, it’s an opportunity. Some of your particularly unlucky heirs will barely make it past the castle gates before they eat it. That’s fine! It’s all steps along the way to your ultimate goal, so don’t sweat it.

Sony has reportedly disabled PlayStation Plus pre-paid code redemption for existing subscribers ahead of the transition to the new tiered version of PlayStation Plus in June.

As reported by Eurogamer and PushSquare, some users are unable to redeem their prepaid PS Plus and PS Now subscription cards, presumably to stop users from locking in the new tiers of PS Plus at a cheaper price. In the FAQ for the new PS Plus, PlayStation states that users who are subscribed to both PS Plus and PS Now will be switched over to the highest tier, PS Plus Premium, when the transition is made. The length of the subscription will be based on whichever subscription is longer. Since the service was announced, users have begun stacking their subscriptions in anticipation of them being converted to the new service.

Now, it seems like PlayStation is blocking users from redeeming cards and from extending their subscriptions digitally as well. GameSpot can confirm that attempting to access an already active PS Plus subscription on a PS5 console results in an error code “CE-117773-6.” Attempting to extend a PS Plus subscription on the PlayStation Store website results in an error stating the item can’t be added to the cart because “You’ve already purchased this item.”

GameSpot has reached out to Sony for comment.

According to PushSquare, Sony Support is confirming that the stacking of prepaid cards has been disabled. “I have checked the voucher and your account and can conclude that as of now there is a temporarily deactivated function for PS Plus/PS Now subscriptions which does not allow for stacking of either membership on already active memberships,” a Sony Support rep told the outlet via email.

Prepaid cards don’t expire and codes generated for online purchases don’t expire for 12 months, so these codes will be usable once the new tiers launch. However it’s unclear what tier these codes will be converted into or if their duration will be prorated.

Destiny 2’s Guardian Games will return on May 3, with this year’s edition offering some significant tweaks to the annual competition between Hunters, Warlocks, and Titans. While the gist of Guardian Games remains the same–you compete by completing different activities and bounties to earn medallions, which you bank at the Podium in the Tower to score points for your class–Bungie has made the event more competitive.

Much like previous Guardian Games, medallions can be earned by completing certain activities and mini-quests through Contender cards and Platinum cards, Bungie explained in its This Week at Bungie blog post. Some cards will reward higher-tier medallions if you complete raids, dungeons, and competitive PvP activities, other cards will offer less but still valuable points through Gambit, Vanguard Strikes, Quickplay Crucible, and other Throne World activities.

Gold medals can be earned by completing Contender Cards in easier activities, whereas Platinum medals drop when Platinum Cards are completed on tougher content. As long as you’re taking part in weekly activities, you’ll be earning medallions for your class.

Now that’s a glow-up

What’s new this year is Strike Scoring, which factors in playtime only for Guardian Games playlists. Strike medals are designed to be rewarded to players for pulling off impressive feats–like stylishly clearing a zone of enemies with your Light and Darkness powers–and these changes emphasize that rushing through a Strike pays out less in the medal department. The Guardian Games can be broken up into two playlists, that make when you play matter.

Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday

The Training playlist where you can earn practice scores, which is the combined score of your entire fireteam.

Friday, Saturday, Sunday, and Monday

The Competitive playlist, where’ll you be battling it out for rewards.

Players can earn buffs in the Recreational, Training, and Competitive playlists by ranking bronze, silver, gold, or platinum, and can use those enhancements in the regular Vanguard Ops playlists until they expire in the next weekly reset. Players will also be able to unlock torches to light in the Tower based on their highest score up to a certain threshold, which can be used to add a glow to your Guardian’s armor once all torches are lit. It’s purely cosmetic, but at least you’ll look great.

Bungie says that the overall structure for Guardian Games is designed to focus on skill level, rewarding players with higher scores for taking on tougher activities and enemies, and completing an activity in a timely manner.

There’ll be new bounties to keep you engaged, with the main reward being a powerful Hakke Void SMG for the Energy slot. Bungie says that this weapon has an aggressive frame with a unique origin perk, Classy Contender, which grants class ability energy with final blows from this weapon.

You’re going to want this Hakke SMG.

Class Items can also be earned, as well as another shot at the Exotic machine gun Heir Apparent and its catalyst during Guardian Games. Finally, players that score in the top 10% at the end of the event will also get a shiny new emblem to add to their collection. For more on Destiny 2, you can check out why we should feel bad for killing environmentalist Savathun the Witch Queen, a potentially huge change for Gambit in the future, and upcoming Exotic weapon buffs.

Final Fantasy XIV’s recently introduced Crystalline Conflict PvP mode seems to have unleashed the less-than-welcoming side of the MMORPG’s playerbase, with the game’s director asking fans to ease up on in-game behavior that could be considered uncooperative or abusive in nature.

Naoki Yoshida, director and producer of Square Enix’s MMO, writes in a blog post on the official Final Fantasy XIV that the team has recently been “receiving an unprecedented number of reports concerning uncooperative/lethargic or taunting behavior during matches.” As such, he outlines some of the behaviors players should avoid, and makes clear that engaging in such behavior could result in a player’s account being temporarily suspended. If violations continue or are particularly “heinous”, the account in question could be banned permanently.

So what are the behaviors that should be avoided? They include using the Quick Chat phrase “Nice Job!” sarcastically during what Square Enix defines as a “disadvantageous situation” as well as using Quick Chat to say “Good match!” prior to the end of a match and when it was not, in fact, a good match. Using any Quick Chat phrase repeatedly is a reportable offense, as is doing emotes on top of a downed opponent, setting fireworks off on their body, or placing a negative target marker on an allied teammate. Of course, going AFK during a match or being uncooperative is also considered harmful behavior, as is directly messaging other players to harass or criticize them, whether it happens in-game or on social media.

Yoshida does note that the list above is not “exhaustive” and that the intent behind an action is important to consider, as is how it makes the recipient of those actions feel. The blog goes on to state that PvP combat can get heated and sometimes people make mistakes.

“For this reason, we ask that before placing a report, you have calmly and clearly assessed whether the observed behavior truly falls under prohibited behaviors,” Yoshida writes.

Final Fantasy XIV recently received its patch 6.1 update, which in addition to adding the Crystalline Conflict adds new story content and a lottery system for player-owned housing.

There may be some newfound skepticism that Microsoft’s acquisition of Activision Blizzard will go through, based on signs from Wall Street. This comes amidst a prediction that US President Joe Biden’s antitrust enforcers could possibly derail the pending deal. Shareholders will vote today about whether or not the company should sell, which, if successful, will see Microsoft pay $95 per share or $75 billion in total for the sale.

Activision Blizzard has faced a challenging period, with lower revenue and Call of Duty sales, and the loss of 60 million players in a year potentially dragging down investor confidence in the company. There’s also the matter of the Federal Trade Commission serving as a hurdle for the Microsoft acquisition. Additionally, some activist investor groups are asking shareholders to vote against the deal due in part to a potential golden parachute for Activision Chief Executive Officer Bobby Kotick, who is expected to leave the company after Microsoft takes over.

That Activision Blizzard’s stock price is so much lower than Microsoft’s offer could be viewed as unusual, as acquiring at under 25% of Microsoft’s offer could in theory earn investors some free cash once the deal is completed. Even if the sale is approved by shareholders, Microsoft still has to deal with an FTC review. Led by Lina Khan, the FTC has taken a more active approach in reviewing deals, which has seen Nvidia’s proposed acquisition of ARM Ltd. and Lockheed Martin Corp.’s bid to acquire Aerojet Rocketdyne Holdings Inc. called off.

If Microsoft clears FTC scrutiny, it’ll also need to have have its acquisition approved by the European Union and China.

Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter is more positive about the outcome of the Microsoft purchase of Activision Blizzard, and explained that even if the FTC launches a lawsuit, it will have difficulty in defining the concentrated market issue that the merger could cause. Lawyer Richard Hoeg is skeptical that Wall Street believes the deal will fail, calling the report “complete, unmitigated, bullshit.”
