Ever since Frodo Baggins lucked his way into inheriting a cursed piece of jewelry, The Lord of the Rings has been prime material for video game adaptations. The majority of these games have been based on the Peter Jackson-directed film trilogy, with The Hobbit prequels also getting time to shine on various platforms. Some of these games have been great tie-ins to terrific films, others have been about as fun to play as tag with a Nazgul.

But in the fires of Mount GameSpot, we’ve found the best Lord of the Rings games. These are our picks for the 10 most preciousss games of Middle-earth. We think all of these are worth playing even today, but there have definitely been some clunkers in The Lord of the Rings franchise. Here’s to hoping that The Lord of the Rings: Gollum is good enough to join this list when it releases in September.

1. The Lord of the Rings: Return of the King

The third time was the charm, as Return of the King nailed a perfect balance between action, adventure, and cutting-edge visuals for its time. With some proper star power cycled into the mix–yes that really is Sir Ian McKellen voicing Gandalf–Return of the King helped end the LOTR film and video game trilogy with a gigantic bang in 2003.

2. The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers

The Lord of the Rings: Two Towers

The Fellowship of the Ring’s tie-in game was largely seen as middling, but for the sequel, The Two Towers massively improved on its predecessor to create a more enjoyable journey. It wasn’t perfect, but a competent combat system, great voice-acting, and impressive graphics made the middle-child of the LOTR saga surprisingly memorable.

3. Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor

An original tale set in the wastelands of Middle-earth, Shadow of Mordor’s claim to fame was its brilliant Nemesis System, which created a dynamic choice-based system that altered the world around you based on your actions. The combat was magnificent, bending wild beasts to your will so that you could have an army on standby was great, and going after an Orc that had been a thorn in your side made Monolith’s first foray in Tolkien territory an instant-classic.

4. Lego Lord of the RIngs

There are three constants in life: Taxes, death, and Lego adapting a film property into a quirky game that features plenty of brick-busting action. Lego Lord of the Rings didn’t stray away from its successful formula, as this adaptation kept the film plot beats intact and added a wholesome layer of goofy charm to the adventures of the Fellowship.

5. The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth

The Lord of the Rings: Battle for Middle-earth

Whether it was the battle of Helm’s Deep or the clash on the Pellenor Fields, Lord of the Rings has always had some of the best large-scale warfare that was begging for a real-time strategy adaptation. Battle for Middle-earth largely succeeded at bringing those conflicts to life, with systems and ideas that would later be used in its sequel.

6. The Lord of the Rings Online

Lord of the Rings Online

In an age where MMOs were more popular and varied than ever, it only made sense that Lord of the Rings should join that scene. Rewarding in the character development department and absolutely grand in the number of locations that could be visited, LOTR Online created a magical experience for fans who logged into the Middle-earth servers. 15 years later, LOTR Online still has an accurate title, as it’s still available to play online.

7. Middle-earth: Shadow of War

While Shadow of Mordor was a tight and compact sandbox, Shadow of War presented a much larger and epic world to explore while expanding on everything that made the original game so beloved. The Nemesis system made your personal antagonist deadlier than ever, combat was stylish, and the ability to wage actual large-scale war while expanding your territory added some interesting wrinkles to the gameplay loop.

8. The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

The Lord of the Rings: The Third Age

What if Final Fantasy X was given a Lord of the Rings makeover? You’d get The Third Age, a fun and competent role-playing game from 2004. Loosely adapting the film trilogy, The Third Age looked great and functioned as an entry-level RPG that younger fans of the films could easily dive into.

Read our Lord of the Rings: The Third Age review.

9. Lego The Hobbit

Lego The Hobbit

A compilation of the first two Hobbit films, this Lego game tie-in pretty much stuck to its strengths. It was goofy, charming, and squarely aimed at kids and fans who’d appreciate the more slapstick take on the beloved Lord of the Rings characters.

10. The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

The Lord of the Rings: War in the North

With Lord of the Rings readying a return to cinemas with 2012’s The Hobbit adaptation, War in the North took advantage of that buzz to craft an original Middle-earth tale. A reliable adventure, War in the North might not have been game of the year material but its rock-solid combat, polished controls, and surprisingly great co-op made it comfort food for a few weekends.

Apple held its annual WWDC keynote event today, in which the company detailed the upcoming iOS 16 operating system. According to Apple, with iOS 16 comes several improvements to how you will use iOS devices to play games, as well as improvements to how you will generally use your Apple devices.

In terms of gaming, Apple shared that Metal–its low-level, low-overhead hardware-accelerated 3D graphic and compute shader API–is getting updated to Metal 3, which will improve iPhone and iPad gaming capabilities. There will also be a new Background Download API which will allow you to download games in the background while you’re doing other things in a simpler way.

Resident Evil Village will be available on Mac later this year.

Game Center is receiving an update that will let you share and see the gaming activity of the people on your friends list and make it easier to track and compare high scores. SharePlay features will also now extend to games to make it easier to play games with friends live. All of these features will come to all apple devices, iPhones, iPads, MacBooks, and Apple desktops later this year.

Apple also revealed new games coming to Mac as well as titles that will be improved thanks to its upcoming M2 chips, which come installed in Apple’s new line of MacBook Airs. To showcase the M2 chip, Apple brought out Capcom’s advanced technical research division manager, Maseru Ijuin, to share some details about Resident Evil Village. Thanks to the chip, Capcom’s most recent Resident Evil entry is coming to Macs later this year. Though the Mac version won’t have any exclusive content or Mac-specific additions, Ijuin did say Capcom has been impressed with Apple’s gaming focus recently and said the new Macs, “handle what we throw at them effortlessly.” Resident Evil Village will be coming to Macs later this year, alongside No Man’s Sky, which was also briefly showcased. Baldur’s Gate 3 also received a very brief but notable callout.

Apple also revealed new games coming to Mac as well as titles that will be improved thanks to its upcoming M2 chips, which come installed in Apple’s new line of MacBook Airs.

Gaming was not the focus of Apple’s 2022 WWDC event, but it was well-represented.

Of course, Apple spent most of its time sharing other exciting, non-gaming details about iOS 16. The lock screen on your iPhone is getting a significant overhaul, with more customization options and live panels that will share real-time updates of your choosing. Apple used sports game updates as an example, but it’s likely these panels could also share update details about your favorite mobile games.

Text messaging is also getting some long-requested updates with the ability to mark text messages as unread, edit text messages, and recall text messages you have already sent.

Apple did not share a release date for iOS 16, but says will be available this fall for iPhone 8 and later models.

Hollow Knight Silksong fans are desperate for an update, as the game hasn’t been mentioned publicly since gameplay was shown via Nintendo Treehouse Live at E3 2019. Now, with Summer Game Fest Live 2022 approaching this week, the Hollow Knight faithful have reason for hope thanks to a tweet from a member of the game’s development team.

Geoff Keighley–curator and host of Summer Game Fest Live–tweeted about the upcoming show, mentioning a “good world premiere arriving in [his] inbox.” Matthew Griffin, a member of Team Cherry’s marketing and publishing team, replied to the tweet, saying “I approve of the tease =P,” and those five words plus one emoticon have galvanized those that have been waiting for more Hollow Knight.

I approve of the tease. =P

— Matthew Griffin (@griffinmatta) June 6, 2022

Reactions to the tweet have been varied, from fans pleading with Griffin for this to be true to others who are anticipating having their happiness destroyed. We’ve gathered a few of the reactions below.

But what does this mean Matthew Griffin sir

— RandomPlonker (@RandomPlonker) June 6, 2022

Can you stop baiting my broken soul already?
I’ve been going back to the shade countless times!

— MagicalTwigs 🌱|| COMMS OPEN || DM FOR INQUIRY ✨ (@MagicalTwigs) June 6, 2022

This speculation comes after Keighley himself told fans to “manage [their] expectations,” as the lineup for Summer Game Fest Live 2022 will be “primarily focused” on games that have been previously announced.

While Hollow Knight Silksong does fit that criterion, the game so far has not been teased for the event. Games that have been confirmed include Call of Duty: Modern Warfare II, The Callisto Protocol, and Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course.

Despite Rainbow Six Siege having a truly staggering number of playable characters, developer Ubisoft Montreal isn’t slowing down on adding new operators to the game anytime soon. In case you haven’t counted recently, Siege has 64 playable operators as of Year 7, Season 2: Vector Glare.

“We haven’t even scratched the tip of the iceberg,” creative director Alexander Karpazis told GameSpot. “The team has so many ideas to release more characters and we’ve become really, really good at balancing this ecosystem of gameplay and gadgetry so that no matter which way you slice it whoever you’re playing as in a five-person team can be really important while always having a counter.”

“If we look at the ideas that we have had with Sens and Azami previously, it goes to show that there’s a lot of untapped potential that is still out there,” game designer Mathieu Lacombe added. “So it’s really great news for us. We are still doing some creative operators that are interesting, that are innovative.”

Lacombe said that the team is able to create so many new operators so quickly because they can make operators that solve the same problem just in different ways. He pointed out how, for example, Wamai and Jäger fulfill the same role as defenders. Both operators have gadgets that can intercept projectiles, but Wamai’s Mag-NET redirects them while Jäger’s ADS-MKIV shoots them out of the air.

“It creates new gameplay designs, new opportunities,” Lacombe said. “So we have a lot of space to create new operators. I don’t feel like we’re slowing down.”

Hearing as much from Karpazis and Lacombe surprised me, given the potential hurdle it supposedly must be to balance a roster as expansive as the one in Siege. I only need to point to Apex Legends senior character designer Devan McGuire’s comments about how Respawn is aware of the potential issues of “legend saturation” and how the team may slow down the release of new characters in future seasons. And that game only has 21 playable characters as of Season 13–that’s a third of Siege’s roster.

“On the balancing side, I think we’re still super comfortable,” Karpazis said. “We haven’t hit a roadblock and, like I said, the ideas are still coming. But it really is up to what the community wants. Do they want to see more characters in the game or do they want to see something else? We’ll always tailor what we deliver every single season to what we see our playerbase asking of us.”

Rainbow Six Siege Y7S2 kicks off this month, adding new operator Sens, a new Team Deathmatch map, a shooting range (finally), and a new battle pass.

Battlefield 2042‘s massive 1.0.0 update arrives June 7, and developer DICE has now shared the full patch notes. The new update includes “hundreds” of changes, bug fixes, and quality-of-life improvements for the military shooter ahead of the start of Season 1, which is rumored to begin June 9.

At a high level, some of the most notable changes include improvements to “soldier gameplay” that should mean smoother animations and movement overall. Additionally, DICE implemented changes to the netcode to improve bullet hit registration, while the studio also conducted a balance pass on weapons to allow for greater shotgun accuracy and increased projectile speeds for DMRs and LMGs.

The 1.0 update also introduces new ways to obtain XP, including killing an enemy who recently wounded or killed a squadmate. Players will also now earn XP when an enemy vehicle that you recently damaged is destroyed by a squadmate and the occupant(s) are killed.

Additionally, DICE added more vehicles for Conquest mode to make it easier to get around. And in terms of Specialist changes, Sundance’s wingsuit has been nerfed, slightly, with overall flight time reduced. At the same time, the wingsuit should now be easier to maneuver. Additionally, Sundance’s EMP Field Smart Explosive has been removed to “simplify” things, DICE said.

You can see the full 1.0 patch notes for Battlefield 2042 below, as shared by DICE on its website.

Battlefield 2042’s 1.0 update goes live the morning of June 7, while the game’s long-awaited and delayed Season 1 will be revealed via a trailer the same day at 8 AM PT / 11 AM ET. According to reporter Tom Henderson, Season 1: Zero Hour will be released on June 9. It will reportedly add one new specialist character, one new map, two new weapons, and two more helicopters.

After this, DICE said Battlefield 2042’s next big update will be released in early July. This is a comparatively smaller patch that “brings further fixes and changes.” DICE will share more details later.

Not too long after its reveal during last week’s State of Play, artwork of what appears to be the main roster for Street Fighter 6 was leaked online and reportedly shows off a sizeable portion of the playable characters in the game. Capcom has since responded to that alleged leak, saying that “we’ve all seen things we weren’t supposed to see, but we’re all in this together.”

As residents of Metro City, we’ve all seen things we weren’t supposed to see, but we’re all in this together. We appreciate all the positive reactions. Thank you for the support!

— Street Fighter (@StreetFighter) June 4, 2022

While the tweet stops just short of straight-up confirming if the leak is legitimate, the images in question do look authentic and in line with Street Fighter 6’s art aesthetic. If you’re curious, you can check out the leak through this Reddit link.

Alongside familiar faces such as Ryu and Chun-Li, the artwork includes classic characters Dhalsim, E. Honda, Blanka, Guile, Ken, Zangief, Dee Jay, Rashid, Juri, Ed, and Akuma. The newer fighters joining Luke and Jaime include an eclectic cast of brawlers from all over the world, including Mexico, China, Germany, and Jamaica.

Street Fighter 6 will be released in 2023 on PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One. Capcom is aiming to make Street Fighter 6 accessible to both newcomers and veterans, and one neat feature being worked on for the game is a commentary system that’ll provide running esports play-by-plays on your matches when you’re playing at home and online.

Summer Game Fest Live organizer and host Geoff Keighley has advised fans to manage their expectations for this week’s event, confirming there will be “a couple” new game announcements. The show will be more focused on games that have already been announced, Keighley said.

“We’ve got a couple of new game announcements in the show and hopefully some surprises if everything holds. But it definitely is a show that’s primarily focused on stuff that is announced,” Keighley said during a recent Twitter Spaces discussion, as transcribed by VGC.

Keighley said people can expect to see games like The Callisto Protocol, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Gotham Knights, and Cuphead: The Delicious Last Course during the event, while Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson will be there as well for some kind of announcement.

“We’re doing some good stuff for you, but definitely manage your expectations in terms of the megaton shocks that you’re expecting,” Keighley said. “This is not The Game Awards. We’ve got lots of good stuff to show you but buyer beware of some of the crazy rumors I’m seeing out there in terms of things people expect to get announced.”

The event itself will be “around an hour and a half to two hours,” Keighley said, cautioning that the total runtime isn’t completely locked in yet.

Summer Game Fest Live takes place Thursday, June 9, starting at 11 AM PT / 2 PM ET. For more, check out GameSpot’s breakdown of how to watch Summer Game Fest Live and what to expect.

Activision has released a new Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 trailer featuring Pete Davidson. Riffing on his appearance in The Suicide Squad, Davidson plays a hapless member of Task Force 141, who clearly doesn’t know what he’s doing. Ultimately, Captain Price (Barry Sloane) advises that it’s probably best for Davidson’s character to stay in the van…

“Now we know what Pete will be up to on Saturday nights….” the video says about Davidson, referencing his recent retirement from Saturday Night Live. Check out the trailer below.

Modern Warfare 2 launches on October 28 for PC and consoles. It’s developed by Infinity Ward and is rumored to be focused, at least in part, on Colombian drug cartels. Leaks have suggested that a beta is in the works, too, with PlayStation users getting in first.

The game’s world premiere trailer will debut on June 8, followed by another reveal on June 9. It’s going to be a busy week for Call of Duty.

In a blog post, Infinity Ward art director Joel Emslie said Modern Warfare 2 is one of the most “ambitious, beautiful, bombastic, melt-your-face-off game Infinity Ward has ever created.” Emslie added that Modern Warfare 2 is “this studio’s magnum opus and it’s the type of game I’ve been waiting to be a part of my entire career.”

Microsoft is in the process of purchasing Activision Blizzard–including the Call of Duty franchise and all of its developers–but the series will continue to be released on PlayStation in the future. In a big shift, Activision will reportedly not release a new Call of Duty game in 2023.

As we round the corner after Computex and transition into June, it’s time once more for Apple’s annual World Wide Developers Conference. As always, Apple kicks off WWDC with their big keynote event, which though aimed first and foremost at developers, is also used as a venue to announce new products and ecosystem strategies. The keynote starts at 10am Pacific (17:00 UTC) today, and AnandTech will be offering live blog coverage of Apple’s event.

With WWDC going virtual once again this year, we’re expecting another rapid-fire, two-hour run through of Apple’s ecosystem. WWDC keynotes have historically covered everything from macOS and iOS to individual Apple applications and more. On the hardware side of matters, in previous years we’ve seen things like the official announcement of Apple’s shift from x86 to Apple Silicon; and while 2021 was light on hardware, one never quite knows what Apple has in store. Apple has yet to launch an Arm-based Mac Pro, so there’s still some big surprises left in their bag, and of course there’s always the chance of the periodic product refresh.

So join us at 10am Pacific to see just what Apple is working on for this year and beyond.

Fortnite Chapter 3, Season 3 is bringing back a fan-favorite feature of the Fortnite battle pass: a customizable character. This season, it’s Snap, an action figure who you can unlock on the first page of the battle pass. There are a ton of Snap Quests to complete as soon as you unlock him for nine Battle Stars, and these Snap Quests will allow you to customize your hero with different head, arm, torso, and leg pieces of the action figure character. Here’s all you need to know about Snap Quests and where to find all Tover Tokens.

Fortnite Snap Quests

There are currently 13 Snap Quests in the game, and completing each one requires you find three Tover Tokens each. The quest language tells you where to look for the tokens, and landing in the right area will show them on your mini-map. But even then, the Tover Tokens can prove hard to find as those map icons can be rather vague. We’ll walk you through how to find all 39 Tover Tokens broken up into sets of three in 13 different locations.

Find Tover Tokens in Rave Cave

All three Tover Tokens are sitting along the roller coaster’s track, so get in a Baller and head down the track until you’ve grabbed all three.

Find Tover Tokens in Condo Canyon

The Tover Tokens are on a green rooftop in the southeast, in the doorway of the Pawn Shop in the southwest, and inside the waffle restaurant next to the Bao Brothers NPC.

Find Tover Tokens in Shifty Shafts

All three of the Tover Tokens are at the base of the northwest mountain at different entrances.

Find Tover Tokens in Sanctuary

The Tover Tokens are outside in the north, in the middle of Sanctuary by the small stone pillars, and to the south by the cornfields.

Find Tover Tokens in The Ruins

The tokens are located at the east staircase, the south staircase, and in the middle of the elevated ruins.

Find Tover Tokens in Lil’ Shafty

Lil’ Shafty is the small mining cave west of Synapse Station. All three tokens are within the cave.

Find Tover Tokens in Reality Falls

One token is at the base of the can’t-miss Reality Tree, another is at the top of the tree, which you get to by running up its spiraling tunnel-like trunk. The last one is, of course, behind the waterfall to the west.

Find Tover Tokens in Rocky Reels

One token is inside the northern building, another is by the eastern playground, and the last one is by the southern concession stand.

Snap includes many customization options–you just need to unlock them first.

Find Tover Tokens in The Joneses

The tokens are in the northern shack, outside the southern trailer, and outside by the southeastern shooting gallery.

Find Tover Tokens in Seven Outpost VII

The tokens are outside the building with the Seven vault inside, in the middle of all the rifts on the east, and on the boat dock.

Find Tover Tokens in Sleepy Sound

The tokens are on the patio at Fishstick’s restaurant by the green umbrellas, outside Noms grocery store (across the street from the gas station), and in the middle of the northern road.

Find Tover Tokens in Logjam Lumberyard

The Tover Tokens can be found at the southern boat dock, inside the westside pile of cut-down trees, and next to the Reboot Van.

Find Tover Tokens in Greasy Grove

The tokens are atop a large central mushroom, a large southeastern mushroom, and a large southern mushroom west of the gas station.

More Snap Quests will be added to the game in about two weeks, so join us once again then as we fill in more details on how you can customize Snap. For the rest of what’s on offer this season, check out the Chapter 3, Season 3 guide, including map changes, new weapons, NPC locations, and Zero Week Quests.
