The Valheim crossbow—or Arbalest, to give it its proper name—is one of the new additions to your Viking arsenal. It arrived with the Mistlands update (opens in new tab) which you can play now on the public test branch (opens in new tab), though be sure to back up your characters and worlds if you’re thinking of checking it out.
While Mistlands biggest feature is the titular biome it adds to the Viking afterlife, there are plenty of other additions to get excited about such as a new magic system, building pieces, food, and of course weapons. If you fancy testing out the new Valheim crossbow, here’s how to make the Arbalest.
Valheim crossbow: How to craft the Mistlands Arbalest
Regular bows have been around since the beginning of Valheim but the Arbalest crossbow handles much differently from any ranged weapon you’re used to in the Viking afterlife. It’s a large, heavy weapon with an automatic—but slow—reload and uses bolts instead of arrows to deal damage.
What it lacks in speed it more than makes up for with power. The knock-back effect from a single bolt is invaluable in tricky situations, especially those high-up areas you might find yourself in while venturing through the Mistlands—a well-timed bolt can send an enemy flying backwards a considerable distance, which gives you extra time to get in a killing blow or make your escape.
The materials you’ll need to craft the Arbalest crossbow aren’t particularly difficult to get and you won’t actually need to set foot in the new Mistlands biome to acquire them.
The Valheim crossbow materials are:
The wood is just the base-level stuff you get from chopping down any old tree or bush, while you’ll need to venture to the Swamp to find both Iron (opens in new tab) and root. Iron scraps are mostly found inside the crypts and can be smelted into Iron, whereas roots are an item dropped from the Abomination enemy.
Unfortunately, the crafting station you need to make the Arbalest does need resources from the Mistlands. The Black Forge requires black cores, black marble, and Yggdrasil wood, so you’ll need to progress to—and be able to survive—the new Mistlands content in order to craft this crossbow. Good luck!

When is Black Friday 2022?
Black Friday 2022 is on November 25 this year and will effectively last through until Cyber Monday on November 28.
Though, in reality, Black Friday is now a month-long event running pretty much throughout the entirety of November. Indeed, since Amazon kicked things off with its Prime Early Access event in October, the deals have been rolling along since then.
What deals can I expect on Black Friday 2022?
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from the two Amazon Prime Day events this year, it’s that it looks like graphics card deals are back on the menu, boys. Despite the RTX 4090 (opens in new tab) and RTX 4080 (opens in new tab) cards launching ahead of Black Friday, there will still be a lot of old stock left on the shelves come the big day and into Cyber Monday.
But that doesn’t mean every GPU deal is going to be a good one. We’ve seen a bunch of discounted RTX 3090 Ti cards recently, but even with heavy discounted prices, they’re not cheap enough to make sense in a world where the RTX 4090 has made the ultra-enthusiast GPU market a one card deal.
Your best bet is in the mid-range or budget end of the graphics card spectrum. It’s going to be a long while before we see new, genuinely affordable GPUs arrive, so if you’re not in the market for some super-expensive slab of graphics silicon, there could well be some great deals. Honestly, the best deals are likely to be on AMD cards if past experience is anything to go by, but Nvidia will also be under some pressure to ship its more mainstream GPUs, too.
It’s also worth noting you will be able to find all these cards in either a pre-built gaming PC (opens in new tab) or last-gen GPUs in a new gaming laptop (opens in new tab), and that’s arguably where the best deals for gaming upgrades will happen.
With the launch of new Intel and AMD processors, the last-gen chips could be cheaper too, in order to clear older stock from the inventory of retailers. That’s good news, because the Intel 12th Gen, and AMD Ryzen 5000-series chips are all still great gaming CPUs. With an imminent price correction on memory (opens in new tab) expected soon, we might see some other component deals, as well.
DDR5 has also started dropping in price now that AMD is supporting it as well, and there seems to have been a glut of great SSDs (opens in new tab) deals.
Screens are another regularly discounted commodity around Black Friday, and we doubt this year will be any different. This means both the best gaming monitors (opens in new tab) and the best TVs for gaming (opens in new tab) could get some tasty deals, too.
And there will always be gaming mice (opens in new tab) and keyboards (opens in new tab) on sale come Black Friday too, so they’re worth taking a look at. It’s a great time of year to treat your butt to a quality gaming chair (opens in new tab) as well, which tend to enjoy some healthy price cuts this time of year.
What should I avoid buying on Black Friday 2022?
Anything you don’t need. It’s distressingly easy to be duped into dropping cash on something just because there’s a hefty discount attached to it… even though you have absolutely no use for it.
If you’re considering making a purchase around Black Friday, have a plan of attack. That probably sounds needlessly aggressive, but you need to know what you actually want to buy first or you’ll end up with no end of crap. Cheap crap, maybe, but crap nonetheless.
Do some research on the products you’d like to pick up in the sales (we offer detailed hardware buying guides (opens in new tab)), and maybe some alternatives in case those don’t pop up. Set yourself a strict budget too.
Products like graphics cards and processors have obvious tiers (though the different companies work damned hard to make product names as confusing as possible), and SSDs have rated speeds, but for peripherals, it’s tougher to tell from the specs whether they’re worth the money. Checking for reviews, from such luminaries as ourselves, should guide you on your way, and checking price trackers such as CamelCamelCamel (opens in new tab) will let you know if a deal’s more than just skin deep.
Are there any Black Friday tips and tricks?
If you haven’t already used it up during a credit card splurge around Amazon Prime Day, then you ought to take the opportunity to sign up for a free 30-day trial of Amazon Prime (opens in new tab). That will get you early access to the Lightning Deals, and help you grab some of Jeff’s best deals of the day. It will also net you free shipping on a host of products and speedy delivery too, and at the very worst it’ll be handy when it comes to bagging some last-minute Christmas gifts for that aunt you always forget about.

Meta has announced what it calls a “breakthrough” in a specific area of game-playing AI: software called Cicero that is the first AI to achieve “human-level performance in the popular strategy game Diplomacy”. Diplomacy is originally a board game, which has many official and unofficial digital successors, and the reason that it’s such an interesting choice is that the core of the game is negotiation: that is, it’s a multiplayer game where the players have to constantly bargain with one another.
The post announcing Cicero acknowledges various AI ‘victories’ over humans (fact check: Deep Blue lost to Garry Kasparov before beating him several years later, after which IBM refused a rematch), but says “truly useful, versatile agents will need to go beyond just moving pieces on a board”. Thus Cicero is intended to be able to negotiate, persuade, and work with human players to achieve strategic goals in the same way a human would.
Diplomacy has long been seen as one of the grand AI challenges for exactly these reasons. You need to understand other players’ motivations, adjust strategies on-the-fly, and ultimately win them over to your side. Well… Cicero played on webDiplomacy.net, an online version of the game, and “achieved more than double the average score of the human players and ranked in the top 10 percent of participants who played more than one game.”
In fact: “Cicero is so effective at using natural language to negotiate with people in Diplomacy that they often favored working with Cicero over other human participants.”
Betrayal! Rank, foul betrayal!
Part of the achievement is that Cicero has not been built on the traditional self-play reinforcement method through which AIs learn games (by playing millions of games against itself or humans and crunching the data). Meta says it incorporates two main elements: “strategic reasoning, as used in agents like AlphaGo and Pluribus, and natural language processing, as used in models like GPT-3, BlenderBot 3, LaMDA, and OPT-175B”.
An especially crucial part is that Cicero can recognise which players it needs to win over, and come up with a strategy to get them on-side. The software “runs an iterative planning algorithm that balances dialogue consistency with rationality”, predicting players’ future moves based on dialogue before coming up with a plan that incorporates these predictions.
It’s not going to take over the world just yet: Cicero is only capable of playing Diplomacy, though of course Meta’s ambitions for this software extend far beyond an old board game. The company reckons this could have a big impact on AI chat assistants, allowing them to for example hold learning conversations and dialogues that teach humans new skills.
“Alternatively, imagine a video game in which the non player characters (NPCs) could plan and converse like people do—understanding your motivations and adapting the conversation accordingly—to help you on your quest of storming the castle.”

What is it? An open-world action about running fast. Expect to pay $60/£50 Developer Sonic Team Publisher Sega Reviewed on GeForce GTX 1070, i7-7700, 16GB RAM Multiplayer? No Link Official site (opens in new tab)
Stunts are always cool. Running at 100mph, boosting your way through hoops before arcing gracefully around a loop-the-loop is never not fun. Unfortunately it takes Sonic Frontiers a while to get there.
While out on a bi-plane adventure to investigate the Starfall Islands, Sonic and pals are unexpectedly sucked into cyberspace through a wormhole. While Sonic manages to run fast enough to escape back into the real world, Amy and Tails aren’t as lucky and find themselves stuck as holograms. Sonic has to navigate the islands by unlocking portals, fighting bosses and collecting bits and bobs to get his friends back to normal. Of course, it’s not that simple, as an AI called Sage teams up with Eggman to get in your way as you unravel the deeper mysteries surrounding the islands.
The world is structured in two halves. There’s cyberspace, which plays out like classic Sonic levels and has you zooming towards the goal as fast as you can, and the Starfall Islands themselves, which are a series of open-world spaces for you to explore. The first time you escape cyberspace into the real world you’re presented with an incredibly bland landmass of grey rock and flat grass. It’s really not a great start—the world feels cold and empty, but over time giant loops and bounce pads are added, turning the landscape into a theme park as you progress.
In all honesty, if I didn’t have to push past the beginning for the sake of review, I would have bounced right off and missed out. But things really start to click at the three-hour mark, as new rails and paths are added to the map—making traversal so much more satisfying.
Sonic himself also feels slow at first. His turning circle feels huge, which is an issue when there are tight corners to navigate when ricocheting around platforms or while searching for various paths in the more old-school sonic levels. He does get faster once you start finding the bell-like Koco creatures dotted around the world and return them to the Elder Koco in exchange for speed boosts. Once you hit the level 7 upgrade, Sonic finally starts to feel like he should. He feels so much more graceful to manoeuvre at speed—there’s nothing quite like gliding along a rail with sparks flying at your heels before flipping to another and boosting through a series of hoops to reach your destination.
Cool runnings
Sonic is also quite handy in a fight. Simple strikes can be combined together with more skills over time. A few hits is enough to down basic enemies, but the new maps are also filled with Shadow Of the Colossus-style giants to take on that require more thought. Some you can watch for breaks in their movesets before striking, others, like the giant Asura, will need you to navigate a path up their bodies to find their vulnerable squishy bits. For a game about running, fighting is weirdly at home here. Unfortunately that all goes to pot when you reach the Titan fight at the end of each area. While the Titans are intimidating to look upon, fighting them involves a mess of setpiece action sequences and free-form flying to take them down. While the scale of them is exciting, the pacing feels so at odds with the rest of the game. You’re left feeling confused by an over the top light show.
It’s really not a great start—the world feels cold and empty, but over time giant loops and bounce pads are added.
The cyberspace sections provide the spectacle the overworld lacks, and are full of bright colours and giant loops for Sonic to sprint though. They’re also punishing. The camera often swings around to change your view and angle of running. Hitting enemies causes you to dash to them with an impressive burst of speed, but as soon as they’re cleared you’ll come to a complete stop and have to build your speed up from scratch again. You’re better off avoiding them. However, Sonic’s new Cyloop ability is great fun—it lets you draw paths around objects or enemies as you run to deal damage or solve puzzles.
The progression system is a mess of currencies. To reach any of the Titans you’ll first need to collect the Chaos Emeralds, and to collect those you’ll need gate keys, but to get those you’ll need to collect gears to open cyberspace portals. You’ll also need a load of other collectibles to upgrade skills and progress, but with so many twinkly objects to keep track of it’s hard to know where to focus first. It’s meant to encourage exploration, but it doesn’t quite work—instead it feels like you’re being pulled in 10 different directions at once because the world itself isn’t worth exploring. Traversal is more about testing your skills and pulling off rad stunts than actually looking around. That’s not a criticism, necessarily—getting around Starfall Islands and riding the rails feels amazing—but hunting for sparkly trinkets isn’t a great incentive to do so.
Unfortunately I did come across some odd bugs. The game could get confused when I had a controller plugged into my PC, which made movement impossible—annoying when this is definitely the kind of game you want to use a controller for. The keyboard controls are fine, but it’s not as intuitive when you try to pull off combos in a fight. There’s also a lot of pop-in which can cause surprises when you don’t know if there is a route up ahead for you to follow until it appears into existence.
I struggled with Sonic Frontiers. While ricocheting around pin-ball like arenas and boosting up walls to reach seemingly impossible places feels rad as hell, the world it’s all set in is flat. The drama of the story makes for a compelling reason to keep playing, but it’s hard to recommend Frontiers given how much gets in the way of letting you enjoy the purity of Sonic’s movement.
Marvel Snap has taken over the digital card game space, and with players from all over the world rushing to thwart their enemies and level up, the competition can be tough. In this guide, I’ll share some tips and tricks I’ve learned through trial and—mostly—error that will give new players the upper hand to reign victorious.
Be goal orientated
Words cannot describe how much I wish I had paid more attention to the Missions and Season Pass goals when I started playing Marvel Snap. The criteria can often be achieved passively as you play, but focusing on specific missions can pay off as you’ll win loads of credits and season pass rewards, leading to some healthy boosts to your Collection Levels, and by proxy, more cards.
Early on, the cost of upgrading base cards is a negligible 25 credits and five boosters. So by working towards specific tasks and banking the rewards as you progress to more expensive upgrades, you will have already done a lot of the work. Additionally, you can earn pockets of Gold through the free Recruit Season Pass, and gold is a resource that would otherwise cost real-world cash. This gold can be used to pick up Variant Cards, unlock more daily missions or pick up a sizable amount of credits to upgrade more cards.
Shop smart
The shop is located at the bottom left of the screen and is home to two key elements that can assist players in the early game. The first is a small cache of 50 free credits that are available daily. This boost is equivalent to the credits needed for two card upgrades from base form to uncommon. While it may seem like a small amount at first, it’s a helping hand that shouldn’t be ignored.
Elsewhere in the shop, there is a section labeled Fast Upgrade, where players can use credits to upgrade their cards. While grinding out boosters can be frustrating, if you pay attention to the missions, you can rack up credits fast and utilise the fast upgrade to its full potential. Keep an eye on the refresh times, and you’ll be racking up collection levels and rewards like it’s nobody’s business.
Theme your decks
In Marvel Snap, getting your cards to work in harmony is no easy feat, but it is necessary to create a strong deck, no matter what hand you’re dealt. It’s worth noting that upgrading your cards doesn’t do anything to their Power; it only helps you climb the collection levels and gain loot. So, even if you upgrade one card to the max, there is no technical loss in letting it go to make a stronger deck. In fact, you should consistently play with your upgraded cards that haven’t been upgraded so that you can reap more rewards.
Early on, when you don’t have many cards, it’s good to pick two or three that you love and build around them. For example, if you like dropping a lot of 1-cost cards across the board, Kazar is a great option. Not only does he give you four power wherever he is placed, but all of your 1-cost cards gain one power too. Having this card can make a big difference when the Zone numbers are close.
Once you have found a few cards you really enjoy playing with, build the rest of the deck as a support system that lets them thrive.

Consider abilities as well as raw power
On the topic of deck building, massive power payoff cards are viable but not always the way forward. An example is the Hulk card, which weighs in at a whopping six energy and twelve power. Early on, I wouldn’t dare take him out of my deck, but as I worked further into the depths of Pool 1, I found that cards with similar or lower attributes but useful abilities on top could also lead to more success.
Your energy levels will always remain the same every round, unless there’s some zone interference, so the risk vs reward of a behemoth card doesn’t always pay off. Take the Devil Dinosaur card, a 5-cost card that gives you a base power of three. The attached effect will give you +2 Power for each card in your hand, meaning you can gain a good amount of power for a lower cost. This choice also gives you the breathing room of being able to take another turn to solidify your win.
Another great example of a lower-cost card with a powerful effect is Elektra who, while only adding one power, destroys a random enemy 1-cost card at the location when revealed. Early incremental wins like this can psych out your opponent and help to set up a win.
The art of the snap
Snapping is as much about believing in yourself as it is about winning, but it can also be a great way to mess with your competitor. If you go in confident on round one and have built up a strong deck, an early snap—accessible by clicking the cube above the game board—boosts the rewards earned or lost in the match-up and warns the other player that you’re not messing around. Even though I’ve been on the receiving end of hundreds of early snaps, I still get a pang of fear when it happens.
This method can surely lead to crushing defeats, but when it comes to Marvel Snap, if there’s no risk, there is no reward. A safer option is to get to the final round and deliver a confident ‘Gotcha!’ snap. This can be a good way to get comfortable with it if you can see you have a pretty clear win ahead of you.
Something else to consider while snapping is that the cards players receive as they progress in Marvel Snap are dealt randomly. This means your competitor may be as new as you are but playing with completely unseen cards. But don’t fret—if you have built your deck with a solid theme, it should be robust enough to weather the storm.
Winning a few rounds with bold early snaps will also lead to some hefty rank rewards that are well worth fighting the fear for, so give it a go.
Lose to win
Finally, the most frustrating lesson of all is to fight your own hubris. There comes a point when you will be using all of your knowledge and smashing in wins left, right and centre. It can feel amazing… until one player rinses you with a card combo you could never have predicted. For me, this was a turning point. Be molded by the darkness!
You will not have every card when you start, so there is no perfect deck early on. There will always be surprises along the way that pick apart your strategy, making you rethink your whole deck. Instead of burning it all to the ground as I did, study the new cards that brought your demise and revise their effects. The best offense is a good defense, and by losing, you can see new approaches and cards to use in your own games. At the very least, you always get a booster.

When is Black Friday 2022?
Black Friday 2022 is on November 25 this year and will effectively last through until Cyber Monday on November 28.
In reality, Black Friday is now a month-long event running pretty much throughout the entirety of November. Indeed, since Amazon kicked things off with its Prime Early Access event in October, the deals have been rolling along since then.
What should I look for in a Black Friday gaming chair deal?
Durability has to be one of the key tenets of any Black Friday gaming chair purchase, as does support. If your bargain purchase starts to expose its metal frame six weeks into life as your gaming throne, and the padding sags depressingly, then you might as well be perched on top of a beer keg for all the support you’re getting.
At the very least, you need to make sure that the gaming chair you have your eye on can offer some lumbar support, as well as adjustable arm rests. When you’re typing or WASDing at a desk, those elbows need to be raised just so (opens in new tab). Neck pillows or an adjustable head rest are also worthy of your time and money, but you also want to make sure you actually fit the thing too.
It’s not always easy to get a bead on a chair’s size from an online search, so make sure to thoroughly check the measurements before dropping a dollar on a new seat. There will be maximum height and weight recommendations for most chairs, and that’s absolutely worth paying attention to.
We recommend only the chairs we feel hit the mark in terms of durability and support.
Do I need a gaming chair or office chair?
Why not one chair that fulfils both roles? There are two ways to go about this, but both are valid.
On the one hand, you look at a pricier office chair, such as the Herman Miller Embody, as both a gaming throne and something for the office. I use this chair at home, and find it offers the comfort for eight hours a day, five days a week, but also allows me to relax into a more comfortable position for gaming in the evenings.
The other option is to buy a premium gaming chair and use that in the office. Our top pick for a gaming chair in 2022, the Secretlab Titan Evo, is well-suited to such a task. In fact, I also use this in the office. It’s ergonomic, comfortable, and it doesn’t look too out of place surrounded by bog-standard chairs. At least not in the usual black finish I have. Maybe some would, but who said an office chair shouldn’t have personality?
So, yeah, don’t feel pigeonholed into one design or the other, so long as whatever you pick is actually ergonomic, well-built, and feels comfy over long sessions.
What size gaming chair do I need?
If you’re buying for yourself it can be a tough job knowing which size of gaming chair to get. If you’re buying for someone else, it can be even tougher. Generally, we recommend the standard seat size, as there’s nothing worse than a cramped bucket seat. These can become uncomfortable over time, and even wear away the fabric at points.
Some brands will offer just a regular and large gaming chair, while others may offer a small as well. These also can correspond to different maximum weights, too, so you might want to consider that.
Our one piece of advice is to look out for chairs with flat, or relatively flat, seat cushions. We find these are the most comfortable for most people, but especially those of us that sit in unusual positions.
Finally: the mod of mods for Skyrim. See, this game has a big problem. Rough-angled, poorly textured, badly colourised garlic bulbs. It’s a disgrace. Modders have previously attempted to address this issue but now here comes the real deal, Garlic: The Garlic mod.
Created by wskeever Garlic: A Garlic Mod addresses the two types of garlic found in the world of Skyrim. There’s garlic sitting on plates, and garlic hanging together in braids. Bethesda’s garlic is pisspoor to the extent it looks more like onions, with yellow-orange colouring and notable ridges across the surface.
What were you playing at, Todd? Did you really think this garlic was good enough for the gamers?
No longer must we suffer Bethesda’s blocky bulbs, for this mod re-does all elements of the garlic bulbs. It re-textures the garlic surface, smoothes-out the polygons, adds a new texture map to the braids, and colorises the bulbs to the pinky whiteness they should have.
This garlic mod replaces a previous high polygon garlic mod, which had the problem of being rather too high polygon and badly optimised. Can’t be having that. Thus, this garlic mod optimises the hell out of the garlic’s vertices: containing 232 vertices and 398 triangles for the garlic bulb compared to 7913 vertices and 9125 triangles for the high poly project’s bulb; and 1857 vertices / 3184 triangles / one draw call for the garlic braid compared to 70754 vertices / 67872 triangles / four draw calls for the high poly project.
Take a bow wskeever: you truly optimised that garlic.

Don’t wait to take advantage of this year’s Black Friday gaming PC deals. Nvidia and AMD are moving on to the next generation of powerful new (and expensive) GPUs, which means there will be tons of big sales on gaming PCs as retailers attempt to clear out existing inventory to make room for the new stuff.
Expect big price cuts on many systems with RTX 30-series GPUs with Intel 10th and 11th Gen Intel processors going into this Friday. There are already some really good deals making the rounds, like this RTX 3060-powered gaming rig selling for less than $800 (opens in new tab). You might consider holding out if you’re shopping for a premium PC with an RTX 3080 or 3090. Nvidia has now released both the RTX 4090 (opens in new tab) and the RTX 4080 (opens in new tab) cards, and AMD announced its high-end RX 7900 XT/X cards will be on the shelves in a few weeks time.
It’ll be a while before we see any budget or mid-range RTX 40-series cards, so it would make sense to grab a deal on a PC with an RX 6600 XT, RTX 3060 Ti, RTX 3070, or RX 6800 XT card for Black Friday this week.
There’s a good chance you’ll spot some deals on systems with older hardware inside, like the RTX 20-series or RX 5000-series GPUs. Unless it’s an absolute steal, we recommend sticking with PCs with RTX 30-series and RX 6000-series cards inside them. If you need help, we put together a handy crib sheet (opens in new tab) to ensure you’re not overpaying for a Black Friday gaming PC deal.
If a deal looks too good to be true, check how much storage and memory the system has. Avoid anything with a 250GB SSD since most of your favorite games will fill that up pretty quickly. On the memory side, stick with at least 16GB dual-channel RAM. Don’t worry about it too much; these are both components you can always upgrade fairly easily later on.
Buying a pre-built could be a new experience for some people, especially those who typically build their PCs. There’s no shame in saving yourself the time and stress and letting a professional do all the part-picking, installing, and testing. Make sure wherever you order your PC has a decent warranty in case something goes horribly wrong down the road.

What should I look for in a Black Friday gaming PC deal?
This Black Friday is going to be a great time to get an Nvidia RTX 3050, RTX 3060, or RTX 3070-powered gaming PC or AMD equivalent. You should be keeping an eye out for the lower-end of Nvidia’s 30-series moreso, but if you’re desperate for a machine that can smash 4K we recommend skipping over the 30-series altogether and waiting for Nvidia’s 40-series graphics cards to go down in price.
System builders such as iBuypower also have their own prebuilt systems that are ready to roll out of the shop quicker than custom designs. These iBuypower RDY systems (opens in new tab) can be with you in a matter of days, when other machines might take weeks, or even months to arrive. Basically, be aware that a custom machine may not arrive in time for Christmas.
Last-gen machines just aren’t as tempting as they were last year, either. At least not for the same money. All this last-gen kit doesn’t just miraculously disappear though, retailers and system builders need to sell it to make some money back. And while there’s nothing wrong with machines built around Zen 2, Intel 10th and 11th Gen CPUs, and Nvidia RTX 2080s if the price is right, make sure you don’t pay over the odds being blinded by the rest of the spec.
As ever when hunting for bargains, focus on what you need, and don’t be swayed to grab a bargain just because something’s cheap.

If there’s one thing better than playing Wordle, it’s playing Wordle well, which is why I’m going to share a few quick tips to help set you on the path to success:
A good opener contains a balanced mix of unique vowels and consonants.
A tactical second guess helps to narrow down the pool of letters quickly.
The solution may contain repeat letters.
There’s no time pressure beyond making sure it’s done by midnight. So there’s no reason to not treat the game like a casual newspaper crossword and come back to it later if you’re coming up blank.

Learn more about Wordle
Every day Wordle presents you with six rows of five boxes, and it’s up to you to work out which secret five-letter word is hiding inside them.
You’ll want to start with a strong word (opens in new tab) like ALERT—something containing multiple vowels, common consonants, and no repeat letters. Hit Enter and the boxes will show you which letters you’ve got right or wrong. If a box turns ⬛️, it means that letter isn’t in the secret word at all. 🟨 means the letter is in the word, but not in that position. 🟩 means you’ve got the right letter in the right spot.
You’ll want your second go to compliment the first, using another “good” word to cover any common letters you missed last time while also trying to avoid any letter you now know for a fact isn’t present in today’s answer.
After that it’s just a case of using what you’ve learned to narrow your guesses down to the right word. You have six tries in total and can only use real words (so no filling the boxes with EEEEE to see if there’s an E). Don’t forget letters can repeat too (ex: BOOKS).
If you need any further advice feel free to check out our Wordle tips (opens in new tab), and if you’d like to find out which words have already been used you’ll find those below.
Originally, Wordle was dreamed up by software engineer Josh Wardle (opens in new tab), as a surprise for his partner who loves word games. From there it spread to his family, and finally got released to the public. The word puzzle game has since inspired tons of games like Wordle (opens in new tab), refocusing the daily gimmick around music or math or geography. It wasn’t long before Wordle became so popular it was sold to the New York Times for seven figures (opens in new tab). Surely it’s only a matter of time before we all solely communicate in tricolor boxes.
