A single new feature in Warzone 2 is already changing how the game is played. Proximity chat, or the ability to hear the mic chatter of nearby enemies, is now on by default in all Warzone modes. You’ll know you’re hearing an enemy when you see a red chat indicator on the left of your HUD.

In the first hours of Warzone 2’s launch day, proximity chat encounters are ranging from surprisingly wholesome to heartbreaking tragedy. Players are utilizing their freedom of speech to negotiate truces, form temporary alliances, taunt each other from afar, and of course, stab each other in the back.

For as long as World of Warcraft has existed, players have been asking Blizzard for the opportunity to play as dragons, bipedal or otherwise. There are still forum posts and interviews as old as 2009 (opens in new tab) with discussions about how to get playable dragons into the game. WoW’s newest expansion, Dragonflight, has finally given the gift of a highly-customizable, playable dragon race and players are naturally spending hours making them.

As everyone knows, the ultimate RPG endgame is at the beginning, during character creation. You absolutely have to look good before saving the world. And the Dracthyr, who are now playable if you’ve pre-ordered the Dragonflight expansion, are very customizable.

The makers of the popular RimWorld mod Combat Extended (opens in new tab) have formed a studio, Vivid Storm Interactive, and have been hard at work making their own game. Ascent of Ashes (opens in new tab) is a colony sim set on an alien planet where you can build a base, grow crops, tame alien creatures, explore a procedurally generated post-apocalyptic landscape, and salvage technology to beef up your defenses.

Along with growing and managing your colony on a hostile alien world, you’ll engage in real-time tactics combat, a lot of which you can see in the reveal trailer above. Despite being real-time with pause, it’s got a definite XCOM feel to it as you draw a path to guide your warriors in and out of cover, rush attackers for close-range or flanking shots, and throw grenades.

Bethesda Softworks has responded to allegations made last week by Doom Eternal composer Mick Gordon (opens in new tab), saying that Gordon “mischaracterized and misrepresented” the situation “with a one-sided and unjust account of the facts of the case.”

Problems between Gordon, an acclaimed composer with credits on multiple Bethesda games and numerous others, and Doom studio id Software came to light in 2020 following the release of the Doom Eternal OST. Gordon effectively disavowed it (opens in new tab), saying he had not mixed most of the tracks, and more surprisingly predicted that he would not work with Bethesda again in the future; a month later, Doom Eternal executive producer Marty Stratton posted an “open letter” on Reddit, shifting the blame onto Gordon and portraying him as unreliable and difficult to work with.

It looks like the only place we’re going to see Xbox’s console-less game streaming device is on Phil Spencer’s shelf. In an interview on The Verge’s Decoder podcast (opens in new tab), the Microsoft Gaming CEO gave a status update on Keystone, the codename for an Xbox game-streaming device, and explained why the company doesn’t plan on rolling it out any time soon.

Spencer told the Verge that Keystone was “more expensive than we wanted it to be when we actually built it out with the hardware that we had inside.” Despite never officially announcing the device, the company shifted its focus away from Keystone to get Xbox Cloud Gaming working on Samsung TVs (opens in new tab) and other devices like the Logitech G Cloud (opens in new tab).

I got a chance to try out the Xbox Cloud Gaming (opens in new tab) via the Xbox App on a new Samsung TV a few months ago and was shocked at how well the games ran.

Warhammer 40,000: Darktide (opens in new tab) launches on November 30, but if you preorder the game you can jump in as early as November 17. With just one day left before that early access starting gun goes off, developer Fatshark has unveiled the full system requirements, along with an impressively detailed blog post breaking down how the various settings—and there are many—will impact overall performance.

First things first, the hardware. Fortunately, Darktide isn’t too demanding at the low end—any basic gaming PC should be able to handle it—while those with heavy iron will be able to take advantage of all the latest and greatest eye-candy tech.

Call of Duty: Warzone 2 and Modern Warfare 2’s social menu seems to be broken on the launch day of the battle royale sequel. Players are reporting that clicking on the social button on Call of Duty’s main menu currently boots players right back to the main menu, locking them out of viewing their friend lists or grouping up.

I’m encountering the same issue, but thankfully, players have already figured out a reliable workaround (as shared by Netoxicky (opens in new tab) on Reddit) to invite friends to a group. It turns out the social tab isn’t the only way to view your friends list—channels can do the trick, too.

Here’s how to party up in Warzone 2 until this bug is sorted out:

  1. Click on the Channels button in the upper right of Call of Duty’s main menu (it’s the headphones icon)
  2. By default, you’ll see an existing channel for your party at the top. Click it, then select “Invite to channel”
  3. You’ll be taken to a friends list. Select who you’d like to invite and hit send

Warzone 2 launched today alongside Modern Warfare 2’s Season 1 update, joining the latest premium Call of Duty game at the hip with its free-to-play battle royale sibling. The two games share a lot: weapons pools, progression systems, and battle pass progress are all synced between both games. Traditionally, it’s possible to unlock everything by playing either normal multiplayer or Warzone, but one of Season 1’s new guns is locked behind a Warzone-exclusive challenge.

The M13B, an assault rifle Infinity Ward is touting for its high fire rate and low recoil (two stats you love to see on a CoD gun), is the only new gun in today’s update that you can’t simply unlock by progressing the battle pass.

The requirements to unlock the M13B instead involve jumping into Warzone 2’s new sandboxy extraction mode, DMZ.

The practicality of most video chat features is debatable—this is Rich Stanton, joining the meeting from the bridge of the Starship Enterprise—but I still didn’t expect the latest Microsoft Teams feature: videogames.

The Games for Work app (opens in new tab) will allow bosses worldwide to add a game to a Teams meeting. The current games are Microsoft IceBreakers, Wordament, Minesweeper, and Solitaire—all of which are ad-free and playable in multiplayer with support from two to 250 players.

Modern Warfare 2’s first season launches today. It was supposed to mark the arrival of both the hardcore Tier 1 (opens in new tab) mode and 4v4 ranked mode CDL Moshpit but unfortunately, the latter will take a little longer to arrive.

Treyarch announced in a tweet that the mode will suffer a small but unspecified delay. “CDL Moshpit was initially expected to release today at the start of Season 01 multiplayer, but recently discovered issues with the mode will require a slight delay. Addressing these issues are our current top priority, and we’ll update you on the timing ASAP.”
